I'm not sure how much of a "leader" John is or isn't. When Ben Forta says it I'll worry about it.
As for now, the Adobe ColdFusion Blog http://blogs.coldfusion.com/post.cfm/coldfusion-news-initiatives-and-updates-from-adobe seems to suggests a new push to revitalize CFUG's, a shorter development cycle and new education initiatives.. Plus the roadmap http://blogs.coldfusion.com/assets/content/roadmap/ColdFusion%20RoadMap.pdf extends out past 2020.. Doesn't sound to me like a product that's on it's last release.
