RE: OT BUT URGENT: IIS stability
Thanks to all of you for your help - after a long sleepless weekend, it finally turned out to be a combination of 1) Dodgy network card on the DB server 2) Network collisions on the LAN 3) Repeated DoS attacks 4) Brute-force password-cracking attempts 5) A dodgy router at the ISP 6) IIS needing a rebuild 7) A missing TOP 1 clause in a query 8) The two servers not wanting to talk to each other on the domain (getting rid of the domain controller status on the SQL server helped) .phew! Thanks again - if you're ever in Yorkshire, England, I'll buy you a pint! Cheers, Alistair -Original Message- From: Marc Edwards [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 08 June 2001 20:25 To: CF-Talk Subject: Re: OT BUT URGENT: IIS stability Hmm. Quite honestly, from my experience, having a stable IIS deployment seems largely a matter of luck, and is subject to your particular recipe of Service pack versions, configuration options, the choice of IIS packages you have installed (I remember on particular system where installing the html web/ftp server administration option caused HUGE problems), peripherals and drivers on the machine, and the server hardware itself. I've experienced systems that run for months without trouble, and others that need redoing every few months, even though they have the same software, installed from the same set of CD's, on identical models of computers ordered at the same time from the same manufacturer! My suggestion to you is just to rebuild the sucker, and not waste time trying to pinpoint the source of the trouble, as in most cases you probably won't find it. Then when you've got a nice clean and reliable install up and running, DON'T TOUCH IT!! Don't try to add any other pieces of software to that server, just let it be your web/app server and nothing else. You might also want to consider migrating to Win2K. From what I've seen in the few months I've been using it in production type environments (we waited for a respectable time to give time for the worst bugs to be identified and sorted out, which is a practice I stick to religiously and unreservedly recommend to anyone deploying on ANY and every new Microsoft product or new version release) it seems to be considerably less finicky. These views may seem a bit extreme to some people, but since I'm one of the guys that needs to mobilise at 3AM , on weekends or on public holidays if something goes wrong, I have good reasons for having them.. - Original Message - From: Alistair Davidson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 09, 2001 1:02 AM Subject: OT BUT URGENT: IIS stability Hi guys ( gals) Sorry for the OT post, but I REALLY need help on this one, people's jobs are on the line. We have a serious problem with stability on IIS 5, Win 2K, CF 4.5.2. IIS has suddenly started to die. Symptoms include - - Existing virtual directories get lost. VDir's that have been working fine for 6 months suddenly return This page cannot be displayed IIS errors. If you delete the VDir and recreate it, it works again. - CF pages take forever to return. Flat HTML pages are responding reasonably well, but all the images now take forever to download. Restarting the CF service seems to help, but only for about half an hour, then it returns. - FTP transfer rates have gone down from over 200K / second to about 5 BYTES / second. My first thought was a runaway CF process somewhere, but when we look at performance monitor on the CF/IIS server, CPU usage is only at 5% and memory usage is minimal. Then we thought it might be persistent database locks, but we've eliminated that. Performance monitor on the DB server shows only minimal CPU / memory usage too. We have CF and IIS on one server (Dual PIII 800, 1.3GB RAM) and SQL running on another. The SQL server is set up as the domain controller. CFSTAT shows that the database response time is fine, it's just taking ages for requests to get to from the server. I know that at my last job, IIS was rebuilt as a regular maintenance task every two or three months. This installation of IIS has been for the last five or six months until this last week. And no code has changed in the last three weeks. Has anyone else had similar problems? How often do you all have to rebuild / re-install IIS ? I need some figures to give to the management ASAP, as they're starting to growl for blood. Re: CFSTOREDPROC and performance question
What is happening when you attempt to use it? We use it a great deal in a shared server environment to do bulk inserts of text files and Access 97 databases into SQL Server 7. The only issues we have run into has been user permissions, since we are uploading files to the web server via CF and then needed to execute the DTS package on the SQL Server. Our work around for that is to use a stored procedure to copy the files from one box to the other and to setup permissions on the boxes to allow the SQL Server to connect to the web server via FTP. RE: CFForms javaScript was Complimentary skill
Zac, I don't have a link to the discussion you're asking about, but I've always found that CFFORM was lacking in several key areas--so I wrote a JavaScript API that I use in place of CFFORM called qForms. The API is open source and is a *lot* more powerful and flexible then the CFFORMs code, and it's as easy (or easier) to use. Plus, qForms has a lot of extended methods and properties that deal with things other than just validation, like: moving an item from one select box to another, trimming fields, populating a select box, returning the form as a structure, setting the form based on a structure, serializing the form to WDDX, plus much, much more. One of the neatest things about the API is that it provides you with the setValue() and getValue() methods--which all you to retrieve a value or set the value for *any* field type. This means you no longer have to loop through a select box to get the value, just call the getValue() method. You can find more information about the qForms API at: http://www.pengoworks.com/qForms/ Something else worth noting, the API is all client-side--which means that you can use it with *any* server-side solution and you're not limited to one platform. That also means you can use it with a standard .html file. There's a number of companies using the API and it's been written to work with NS v3+ and IE4+. (It should work w/IE3, but I don't know anybody that still has a copy to test it with. g) -Dan -Original Message- From: Zac [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, June 09, 2001 4:23 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: CFForms javaScript was Complimentary skill On Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 12:33 PM, Jann VanOver wrote: Do NOT use the CF form tags -- write all your own Javascript -- the javascript in CF form tags will get in your way. Re: Doubled Form fields
I've seen this on several occasions, and on each one, it was programmer error. Check and double check to ensure that you are not doubling up the name of a form field somewhere on your form. Is the name of the form field written in a loop, effectively creating several inputs of the same name? If so the result is a comma delimited list. You say that this only happens occasionally. It could be that the code which blows up only runs when certain form fields are present, or checked, etc. HTH, let me know what you find out. updating records in spreadsheet-like view
OK - I've had good luck with this list lately and I'm pulling my hair out on this - there has to be an answer! I'd just like to display to the user a list (multi-row-like) of document ids and a blank box for entering in train dates. When the user hits submit I'd like to update a table with the new dates. CFGRID and CFGRIDUPDATE both work for this purpose, but there is one catch for my application. There may be duplicate docids for an employee based on another key field in the table, subdept. So I really don't want to display all those duplicates to the end user - just let them see docid and the blank box for the date, then have it behind the scenes update the date for all instances (subdept) of the docid. CFGRID doesn't like this since any key field needs to be included and deptcode is a key field. I've done something similar to this by using a concatenated field and then using the evaluate() function on the next page, but that was with a checkbox not a date field and the checkbox allows me to assign a concatenated value along with a name. How do I do that with an input text box? Here's some code which works great for a checkbox but I want to do the same for a date (text) box (with an update instead of a insert). So how would this work if the first line below was a date field? I guess the issue is how you can assign a value to a checkbox to be passed to the next page but with an input text box if you assigned a value it would show up on the entry form. input type=checkbox name=check checked value=#fullfileid##deptcode# /td td #LSNumberFormat(employeeno,9)# /td td #docid# /td td #Title# /td td #DeptCode# /td /tr input type=hidden name=empid#docid##deptcode# value=#LSNumberFormat(employeeno,9)# input type=hidden name=deptcode#docid##deptcode# value=#deptcode# input type=hidden name=docid#docid##deptcode# value=#fullfileid# /cfoutput Processing Page: cfloop index=doc list=#form.check# cfquery name=addtorec datasource=docs insert into tblemployee_train(employeeno,fullfileid,deptcode,dateadded) values(#evaluate('form.empid' doc)#,'#evaluate('form.docid' doc)#','#evaluate('form.deptcode' doc)#',#Now()#) /cfquery /cfloop ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Database Design Help
Hello. I'm trying to build an application but I'm stuck on designing the DB. I'll try to explain how the site is going to be made, and hopefully someone can help. There are only going to be 3 levels of pages. Category pages, sub pages, and sub-sub pages. I want to be able to call any page, whether it's a sub-sub, sub, or category page, just by it's id (like pageid=3). Then, using only the pageid information I want to be able to get all the other pages in that category... so, for example: If pageid 3 was a sub-sub page... when someone goes to that page, I want to be able to list the main category page it's under, the sub pages under that category, and then the sub-sub pages under the sub page (which the current page belongs to). Can anyone help me figure out how I should build the DB to handle this? I feel like an idiot because it seems like it would be so simple (especially since I know the pages will always be only 3 levels deep) but I just can't figure out how to make the DB. Please help! Visual SourceSafe
I know this is a cf list, but I'm hoping they are still members using sourcesafe, their documentation is really poor. I've been using sourcesafe with mapped drives. However, it's slow and a security hazzard, so I'm wishing to use FTP instead. However, even though I've now labeled projects as web projects, I can't figure out how to use the FTP available. Also, we have a clustered environment, so if anyone has experience with deploying to mutiple servers, I'd appreciate your help as well. Re: Database Design Help
Cody, I think you should still design the system so that it can have more than three levels. Your site structure is very common in sites I have been working with and most stay within those three levels, but sometimes there can be a small change that the client wants that messes everything and requires a fourth. ANYWAY: Here is the way we do it: Create a single table called SiteCategories. Within the table create a column called parent. The first level categories will all have 0 as the parent. Each category will have an ID and the sub categories will use this ID as it's parent. Here are a few example records: catIDcatTitle catDescriptionParent 1 supportdescription of support 0 2 servicesdescription of services 0 3 online desc. of online support1 4 telephone desc. of phone support1 Now when you click on support simply query all records where the parent record is 1 and you will retrieve all support sub records. Simalarly when you want to brong up phone support all you would need to do id determine what its' parent is then query all items with the same parent. You can reply to me directly if I have confused you with this. - BILL - - Original Message - From: Cody [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 11, 2001 7:23 AM Subject: Database Design Help Hello. Re: Database Design Help
My first thought is to use a self-referencing table. Page (PageID, categoryinfo, ParentID) ParentID references back to PageID. Set it to zero for top-level categories. You can get any page by selecting where pageID = currentpageID You can get all children by selecting where parentID = currentpageID You can get the parent by selecting where page.pageID in (select parentID where pageID = currentpageID) (-- or something like that) Since you want to reference everything by a single ID set, you probably do not want to your pages into multiple categories. RE: Database Design Help
I built a site very similar to this, using the technique Bill explained, with each record having a parent record. If you KNOW for sure that there will be no more than three levels, then you can get away with three tables: grandparents, parents, children. This is risky and not the best design. The parent record idea worked very well, but there's an even better method to build trees (that's the term for these things) located on www.secretagents.com, as a free sample tutorial for there tutorial services. It's not simple to pickup, but if anyone is interested in building trees of infinite depth, it's certainly an interesting technique. It reduces the number of queries required to find the parent and grandparent of a given child. Using the parent record theory, you've gotta query twice: once to find the parent, then again to find the parent's parent. At least that was the only way I figured out :). Weird problem setting client variable
I have the weirdest problem setting a client variable and for the live of me I can not see where the problem is. The problem is the following: I have a form where the user can change the language of the site, one of the fields on the form is a select box named NewLang, now, once the user selects the new language the form is posted to a template (ChangeLang.cfm) which only function is to cfset client.lang = newlang and then cflocation to the parent template. The first line in the application.cfm is to cfparam for client.lang and set it to en if is not defined, some how it is always set to en because client.lang is not defined. Now I know app.cfm is always executed, so before ChangeLang.cfm is executed the client.lang is set to en then the template is executed and client.lang is set to the new language and a redirection occurs to the parent template, client.lang should contain the new language, but is not because the cfparam resets it to en. RE: intrusion/penetration tools
Are you looking for tools that will be run on a Unix or Windows platform? Also, are you looking for host or network-based tools? If you are not familiar with the terminology, host-based tools reside on the machine being tested and allow for a much deeper local inspection while network-based tools are run from a computer other than the one being tested and are better for testing remote vulnerabilities. Some network-based tools have remote agents that are installed on the system being tested so that you can test both sides at once. As for testing your application, AppScan by Sanctum is the only automated tool that I know of. I don't know if it works specifically with ColdFusion, http://www.sanctuminc.com/security/appscan/index.html. RE: Weird problem setting client variable
If you're storing client variables in cookies the cflocation will break them always. Change client variable storage to a datasource, use another way of re-locating or use a locked session variable would be my suggestions. HTH, Craig -Original Message- From: Perez, Bismark [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 11 June 2001 16:03 To: CF-Talk Subject: Weird problem setting client variable I have the weirdest problem setting a client variable and for the live of me I can not see where the problem is. Can somebody see where the problem is... TIA Bismarck Perez ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
