Now that is interesting, can you explain a little bit I've been seeing a
lot of activity by code red but our IDS blocks all of it so in theory the cf
server shouldn't be being touched.

The mappings are all gone as well so it shouldn't have any effect.

What did your friend do to resolve it?

cfserver.exe process problems

2001-08-03 Thread Edward Chanter

Has anyone encountered a situation where the cfserver.exe process becomes
extremely unresponsive?? Basically it looks as if there's a bad query
running that is just using up all of the threads available to cfserver.

This smells like some kind of DoS attack but I'm buggered if I can work it
out

Any insight anyone has is -as always- much appreciated...?

RFC's 1918,1597 etc. reserves 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255 for Intranet use
(i.e. they are internal addresses).
Its listed as 'IANA-reserved' by CERT.

iMS is a mail server. It doesn't require another mail server to send or receive mail.
We also provide a freeware w/source webmail
interface for iMS.

iMS requires ColdFusion and templates for processing (sort of how a web server uses
ColdFusion for dynamic content processing).

RE: OOT: ListServ Software?

2001-08-03 Thread Dennis Powers

Mike,

Can you run IMS on a dedicated mail server that doesn't have a web server?
Or does it require a web server/CF server and the IMS server?

I am currently using Post.Office with over 300 users, and have over 60
active lists with an average of 1000 users per list, some as high as 8,000
users (broadcast-list). It has been working flawlessly, but I would like
some additional features (that won't happen) like the ability to integrate
the list management more easily into a web page with queries and such.

I am a "server for every function" kind of guy. Our Web servers just do
webs/CF our mail servers just do mail and our FTP servers just do FTP all on
separate boxes.

RE: The 0 byte CFMail bug

2001-08-03 Thread John Fix 3rd

It's still buggy. :-)

It ran fine for me on my test servers during the beta cycle, but since
I've put it on my production machines I find two or three blank files in
the spool directory. They aren't zero byte and there isn't a CPU issue,
but I can't figure out where they are coming from. Nothing changed on
the server other than going from 4.5 to 5.0.

RE: Reboot windows 2K server?

2001-08-03 Thread Matt Robertson

Jay,

Well, thats what I get for not reading the manual. Everything I've ever heard has been
along the lines of ''buy the resource kit''.

My first try resulted in a lockup/freeze, but subsequent runs rebooted my desktop
system just fine. At first I thought it was running slower than a comparable batch
file, but when I wrote one that just reset WWW service, ftp and smtp the times for the
batch file actually came out slower.

Would certainly be a simple thing to schedule this. I may set it up to bop my server
weekly or something.

Thanks for the tip!

Just for clarification, iisreset /reboot is a Windows 2000 native utility, that's
included with the base installation of IIS completely free, and actually works.

There is no structure containing just query objects; queries are simply a
type of variable, so that if your query is stored within the Session scope,
for example, enumerating the variables within that scope will show you the
query.

In CF 4/5, the scopes that are available as structures are:

Session
Application
Form
URL
CGI
Cookie
Request
Attributes

Go to http://globalpaymentsinc.com. The two main payment systems they list are
Authorize.net and Cybercash. Cybercash recently was acquired by Verisign, and they're
history in terms of taking new customers.

Personally I found Authorize.net to be the easiest to set up, requiring only a few
lines of CF code to integrate into a cart. Their signup and monthly fees were
reasonable as I recall, although I haven't worked with them for awhile.

Verisign is my personal favorite. Inexpensive setup fees, reasonable monthlies. The
PayFlow Link service is dirt-simple and inexpensive. The PayFlow Pro service is
reasonably priced and also fairly easy to integrate into any cart. Requires a CFX to
be installed on the CF server, which you can't get at the Dev Exchg (you have to get
it from Verisign).

I've found that when it comes to small merchants, banks see this as a
revenue-generating opportunity and -- typically citing fraud and chargeback prevention
concerns -- often try to force their own solutions and consultancies on their clients.
I had one instance where Bank of America told my client to use their Cybercash
consultant -- whose prices were triple mine -- or take all of their business elsewhere
(they did).

One thing you might consider is buying a pre-built solution. CFWebStore
(http://cfwebstore.com) is an excellent option in this regard. If you want to learn
how to build a cart on your own, buy Ben Forta's book: ColdFusion Web Application
Construction Kit. You'll see posts about the new edition that just came out going on
in here right now.

Cheers,

With no experience with shopping carts, SSL certificates and gateways, I
don't have an answer to my banker, who asks if my software is Global
Payment Systems (NDC) approved. I don't recall a discussion on this list
where this was mentioned. Can anyone help me with the terminology I need
to speak with him about this, or point me to a URL that has explanations
that are relatively simple and straightforward? In particular, I'm not
sure what he is specifically referring to by "my software." CF, SSL, or
what?

This is a smaller, regional bank, so maybe you could prompt me with the
questions I ought to be asking him. I'm currently dealing with
CFHosting.com and Advances.com, if anyone has specific insights, based
on these ISPs, although I'm not opposed to hosting with another, if they
make the process easier to set up.

Thanks,
John

RE: default.ida?

thousands huh?

the fact is, you can't list a dozen people on this list that you know for
absolute certain are digging around his server in some malicious manner. i'm
not suggesting everyone here is a saint, but i think all these dramatic
suggestions of the behaviours of others is unfounded.

and while we're still on the subject, i think if you're the admin of
machines being hacked based on an exploit that's MONTHS old, you shouldn't
feel victimized. you should feel ignorant. and i wonder, of all the machines
that were vulnerable to this latest round, how many of them actually *use*
MS indexing server? patching services you're not using. brilliant. why don't
we all just run anonymous FTP into our system folders and level the playing
field? maybe we'll stave off
(http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=stave) the hackers because
they won't know where to start...

Well since he posted his IP addresses to this list they have been pinged,
tracert'd, checked for code red vunerability, checked for all the usual CF

Need I go on?

Its not the fact that its easy for someone to do these things, its the fact
that there are 1000s of subscribers on this list who are now "having a look"
at his server, as well as the unscrupulous people having a good old dig at
his server.

Is that sufficient?

Go for it. It has many additional benefits, like the ability to use it
as a router, remote configuration options (just login using OpenSSH) if
you suddenly find yourself needing access from some unexpected location etc.

There are many diferent solutions for this, ranging from really
straightforward 'boot from floppy' systems (like Freesco and LRP), to
options that allow you to use the system as a server at the same time
(basically every *nix, with different security and option levels). If
you want the easy one I recommend Freesco, if you want more whistles I
would recommend OpenBSD.

A PII 233 is overkill. The boot from floppy options require a 386 with
12 MB, a floppy drive and 2 network adapters, for OpenBSD a Pentium is nice.

Names of Structures that contain CF Metadata

2001-08-03 Thread Chris Mosier

What are the names of the structures that contain all querynames available
in a page? Is there any documentation/listing of all available structs that
CF has in a page?

I've seen this list(below) from KB article 14192. What I'm looking for are
the names of queries run on the page.

#StructKeyList(url)#
#StructKeyList(form)#
#StructKeyList(session)#
#StructKeyList(application)#
#StructKeyList(request)#

Thanks,

I would presume he means the shopping cart application itself,
although he could mean the payment gateway (if any), such as
CyberCash, or both.

I've done a good deal of shopping carts for a wide range of clients
and I've never been asked that question. I've had several client's
whose merchant companies have wanted to go view the cart before
they'd release their account to take orders live, mainly just to see
that the credit card was being transmitted through SSL and that the
return policy was in place, but have never had to go through any sort
of "official" approval.

RE: Reboot windows 2K server?

2001-08-03 Thread Jay Sudowski - Handy Networks LLC

Matt -

Just for clarification, iisreset /reboot is a Windows 2000 native
utility, that's included with the base installation of IIS completely
free, and actually works.

We used to restart all web / IIS / ColdFusion related services nightly
as well, until W3SVC would refuse to stop properly. To get things
functioning properly, I would have to kill inetinfo and then restart
IIS. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or have any suggestions
on how I might avoid it? Perhaps there's a command line modifier to net
stop that increases the time out?

Mike,

As you've already found out, that CFX tag doesn't work. If you want to
use a native Win service to do this you have to buy the resource kit.

I was able to find a routine called ExitsNT that did work, but its built
in scheduler stopped functioning after a time... plus it shows up in the
system tray, regardless of whether you tell it not to show up there. I
found out the hard way that if you weren't *very* careful while using
that icon's right-click menu you could initiate a complete shutdown --
not a restart. One slip of the mouse and you're on the phone to your
colo guys with a virtual Stoopid sign rightfully hanging around your
neck.

I've had a lot more luck with a scheduled comprehensive services
stop/start batch file. Individually shutting off all web-related
services (not just CF) and restarting them has given me the ability to
avoid full restarts for fairly long intervals (as Windows servers go
:D).

As long as we are being snippy...I doubt a tag from 98 is going to do
the trick.

This tag was designed for Windows NT, using
InitiateSystemShutdownA from the Windows API. As far as I know, it will
not work under Windows 95. Not sure about Windows 98, but I doubt it.
If anyone finds out differently, let me know.

As far as searching the tag gallery first, cut him some slack. If all
the answers were in the tag gallery, the threads would be.

Post 1: Ask my question
Post 2: Go Look it up in the tag gallery

At least if you are going to make the statement along the lines that
there is a tag in the tag gallery, you should have searched there first,
then you should at least have looked further into the tag before making
such a blanket statement.

E-commerce question

2001-08-03 Thread John Allred

2001-08-03 Thread Stephen Moretti

Well since he posted his IP addresses to this list they have been pinged,
tracert'd, checked for code red vunerability, checked for all the usual CF
insecurities, had his entire IP range scanned...

Need I go on?

Its not the fact that its easy for someone to do these things, its the fact
that there are 1000s of subscribers on this list who are now "having a look"
at his server, as well as the unscrupulous people having a good old dig at
his server.

Is that sufficient?

The 0 byte CFMail bug

2001-08-03 Thread Carlisle, Eric

Macromedia says they have the problem with the 0 byte files clogging the
mail spool fixed in v5. I popped a 0 btye file (called 6.cfmail) in the
spool folder and got 100% CPU utilization. Also, all future mail dosn't get
sent until the file is removed and the application service is restarted. I
called Macromedia and they can't really give me an answer on this. Am I
crazy of is cfmail/spool still buggy (there's only one right answer to that
question ;).

RE: form field parameter not recognized

2001-08-03 Thread Joel Parramore

How do you know the form field is there? It's on the HTML form? If it's
blank, that particular browser may not be passing it back to the server.
Just in case, use

instead to test for its existence, or use a CFPARAM tag to initialize the
form.gname field for safety.

Works around your immediate problem, at least...

Joel

Actually we have an unpatched (default install) "remote" box unconnected to
the rest of out network put out as a sitting duck, so we can go see what
happens to it every few hours, before restoring it to it's "I'm a victim"
state. For no other reason then it's interesting to see what the hell goes
on in the wild unpatched world of the internet. All outgoing traffic is
logged and blocked if it seems to be effecting other people (i.e. launching
DDOS attacks etc).

While I think it's of utmost important to patch systems, it's also kinda
cool to try and work out the nitty-gritty of what's actually going on.

The latest excitement is the "h..p://www.worm.com" text changing from black
to red :)

I'm sure people are going to have moral objections to knowingly not patching
a box. But sometimes it can be the difference between blindly patching a
machine without knowing what's going on, or patching the rest of your
machines with some knowledge.

OB ColdFusion;

When using , what are the speed implications of using the dot
notation vrs the slash notation (name vrs template)? We may put an
application on a system where they don't allow custom tags, so we may change
all our from using dot notation to slash. Then we wondered what
good reasons there were for not doing this anyway.

Cheers,
Dan.

Address COM Object

2001-08-03 Thread Ken Monroe

Hello!

Has anyone used the Address Object from Melissa Data Corp. with CF? I'm
having problems ("Invalid Class String") when I try to use the
tag. I use CFOBJECT as:

I can see the object and all its methods in OLEViewer and I've run regsvr32
on the .dll. I've also used OLEView to Create An Instance of the object
first, all with no luck. ??

Thx

 while (NOT TablesSchemaRS.EOF) {

Any idea why?

Either works in CF 4.x

You should believe the one that didn't say "GIF". CFGRAPH supports JPG, PNG
and Flash. I think that it may have supported GIF during the beta cycle - I
suspect the reason it doesn't support GIF is because of the outrageous
Unisys licensing for GIF/LZW.

SLCFUG Members,

It's that time again!

Next week is our August meeting for the Salt Lake ColdFusion User's Group.
We will be meeting at 6pm at G.E. Capital, located at 4246 Riverboat Road,
in Salt Lake City.

This month's topic will be given by Scott Heffron. It will be a very cool
presentation. I hope to see you there. See below this message for an
abstract.

As always, there will be plenty of fun stuff to give away, so bring an extra
business card or two.

Please RSVP by sending me a message at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you plan on
attending.

See you next Thursday!

Mike George
SLCFUG Manager

==

Abstract

Mobile users want access to corporate information anytime and anywhere.
This ability to access real time information can be crucial to the company's
bottom line.

Unfortunately most web applications do not port well to mobile devices. The
reasons for this includes the PDA's small screen size, limited input
capabilities and bandwidth.

At the August CFUG meeting, we are going to show how to allow users access
your company's information anytime and anywhere. We will discuss what is
needed for this to happen and show a case study on how to put critical
information into your workers hands. This presentation will demonstrate how
to integrate ColdFusion and a Palm OS handheld device.

RE: Reboot windows 2K server?

2001-08-03 Thread Matt Robertson

Mike,

As you've already found out, that CFX tag doesn't work. If you want to use a native
Win service to do this you have to buy the resource kit.

I was able to find a routine called ExitsNT that did work, but its built in scheduler
stopped functioning after a time... plus it shows up in the system tray, regardless of
whether you tell it not to show up there. I found out the hard way that if you
weren't *very* careful while using that icon's right-click menu you could initiate a
complete shutdown -- not a restart. One slip of the mouse and you're on the phone to
your colo guys with a virtual Stoopid sign rightfully hanging around your neck.

I've had a lot more luck with a scheduled comprehensive services stop/start batch
file. Individually shutting off all web-related services (not just CF) and restarting
them has given me the ability to avoid full restarts for fairly long intervals (as
Windows servers go :D).

As long as we are being snippy...I doubt a tag from 98 is going to do the
trick.

This tag was designed for Windows NT, using
InitiateSystemShutdownA from the Windows API. As far as I know, it will not
work under Windows 95. Not sure about Windows 98, but I doubt it. If anyone
finds out differently, let me know.

As far as searching the tag gallery first, cut him some slack. If all the
answers were in the tag gallery, the threads would be.

Post 1: Ask my question
Post 2: Go Look it up in the tag gallery

At least if you are going to make the statement along the lines that there
is a tag in the tag gallery, you should have searched there first, then you
should at least have looked further into the tag before making such a
blanket statement.

CFHeader

2001-08-03 Thread Janine Jakim

Everytime I try to use CFHEADER I get the message: "The tag name "CFHEADER"
not found in currently active versions.
This is the code I was using:

I can't find any docs about it not being usable. Also could this be the
reason some of my fdf's quit working (I had them working a couple of months
ago- I ignored them and came back to look at them again and suddenly when I
go to open my pdf I get the error that says "There was an error opening
this document. A file read error has occurred." Is this coincidence or
somehow related?

Anyone else have this problem. BTW we just receintly upgraded to CF5.0

Learning Management Software (LMS)

2001-08-03 Thread Jeff Beer

Has anyone ever worked with the Docent Enterprise LMS?

A client has expressed interest in using this software. My basic

form field parameter not recognized

2001-08-03 Thread Mark

We're having a strange problem with form field
parameters not being recognized when being passed to a
second page even though all the code is there and the
form field is present.

Here's the code on the original page:

http://www.fancyblooms.com/test.cfm";
method="post">

... more form fields here

On the second page, test.cfm, there is a check to make
sure that the first form field, gname, is not blank.

Error

... etc

The error that SOME visitors get is:

"Error resolving parameter FORM.GNAME. The specified
form field cannot be found "

Now, I know the form field is there, and I can't
duplicate this error under any of the PC based
browsers we use (IE, Netscape, Opera). The only common
thing I do know is that the few people that did get
this error are using AOL 5.0 and are on the MAC
platform.

I understand that I could use client side validation
with CFFORM to make sure these fields are not empty,
but I'm trying to avoid all the Javascript that goes
along with it.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is it AOL and
MAC related? Any suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

Mark

Re: OOT: ListServ Software?

2001-08-03 Thread Michael Dinowitz

post.office has a free 10 list/100 users setup on their mailserver. Only
problem is that the mailserver is basically abandon-ware. You can write one
rather fast using iMS as a mailserver and it'll also give you a ton of
extra's (it uses CF for its programming and is a great replacement for
CFMAIL). You can also write one using CFSCHEDULE, CFMAIL and almost any
mailserver using straight CF. Fun, but not as powerful as a true listserver.

OOT: ListServ Software?

2001-08-03 Thread Reed Powell

I hate to do this, but you guys know everything! Simple question: Where
would I locate the software needed to setup and manage a ListServ operation
internal to my company? My server would be Win2k. Cost is a factor.

Activity level would be low (nowhere near the level of activity of CF-TALK,
for instance). Features we're after are the core ability to assemble and
retransmit the messages received (in both digest and non-digest modes), and
to view/search the archives of past messages.

If you want something prewritten and looks good I have heard good things about
zonealarm. If you want something highly customizable I recommend OpenBSD with
IPFilter as you firewall/gateway/router. There are alot of howtos that can get
you up and running fairly quickly if you are familiar with unix.

There's a CGI header called HTTP_COOKIE which contains all the cookies. You

Since Windows 2000 shares the same API interface, for the most part, as
Windows NT, the tag should still work on Windows 2000. I haven't used it,
but I have used the NT remote shutdown utilities (shutdown.exe, shutgui.exe)
to remotely shutdown a Windows 2000 server before.

RE: Reboot windows 2K server?

2001-08-03 Thread Braver, Ben

Ummm, the tag gallery says the CFX_RestartMachine tag was last modified
October 3, 1998. The description mentions rebooting an "NT server". It
doesn't mention Win2K.

An earlier post indicated NT reboot tools didn't work with Win2K server.

Just a thought, but it's also important to note whether a suggested solution
matches the stated need.

Is there a utility that I can run with NT scheduler that will restart an
NT server? I'm trying to track down some memory leaks, but if I can't
solve it before vacation time I want to just set up a way to restart the
server every few days at some time in the early am.

Thanks!

RE: Home Office Firewall

2001-08-03 Thread Mark Warrick

I hear Blackice is pretty good. I've used McAfee's firewall as well. They
both do a great job of blocking traffic. Unfortunately, on a development
server that caused me problems and I ended up passing on that idea. They're
more trouble than they're worth for me. Your situation may be different.

Blackice works on NT and 2000. McAfee is only for 95/98/ME.

Don't be fooled by the cable/dsl routers. The packaging is misleading.
Although network translation does provide a level of enhanced security since
the end user doesn't know the internal IP, a good hacker can still get
through the router and get to your machine.

However, if you find a cable/dsl router that has a built-in firewall (the
most expensive ones have a real firewall) you should be OK. If you're on a
modem, you have little to worry about to begin with. Blackice or McAffee
whould be sufficient in that case.

Yes, IIS logs every request, whether or not the request is successful - as
you can see, your server is returning a 401 status code indicating the need
to authenticate first, not a 200, which is what you'd get for a successful
request.

When you use a browser to request a URL that requires authentication, the
process looks like this.

1. Your browser sends the request:
GET /securedpage.html HTTP/1.1
...

2. The server returns a 401 status code.

3. Your browser displays a password prompt.

4. The browser sends the request again, this time with the authentication
info tacked onto the request.

Subject: OT: Auto-reboot a server

Is there a utility that I can run with NT scheduler that will restart an
NT server? I'm trying to track down some memory leaks, but if I can't
solve it before vacation time I want to just set up a way to restart the
server every few days at some time in the early am.

Thanks!

John
