Anybody tried to connect to Outlook.Applcation Object?

hi
i am trying to connect to outlook object using my local CF 5.0 server. I
have also installed Microsoft Outlook application. But somehow i could not
create the object. I get this error :
 Error trying to create object specified in the tag. 
COM error 0x5. Access is denied. 

   This is the code that i am using :


 
  


   
  


What could be the reason ?

Don't laugh, I have seen this sort of stuff created in Illustrator by
very good artists. I have also seen this done in Photoshop, with a bit
done in illustrator. Any tool could have been used by any good artist!!
But my guess that for ease and $'s it would have been done in a 3D
Package, Raydream Studio, Xara, 3D Max to name a few..

If you were a beta tester once before, you need to have your account
reactivated with a serial number. Send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
they ask for a serial number before they connect you back up.

I just logged in an saw the Studio/Homesite links, so they are still
there!!

I did indeed find the tag.  I was looking for a file named
cf_boolsearch.cfm, not boolsearch.cfm.

Also, thanks for the link to the tag source.  I was modifying the source to
work with an Oracle database (which is case sensitive, unlike the Sql Server
db that was being used).

If anyone wants a copy of the modified tag, please let me know.

Dashes in LDAP attributes

I read over the weekend (and now can't relocate the article) that you can't
have dashes in variable names in CF.  The article talked about having to
extract an Exchange Server LDAP query that used the "custom-attribute"
fields out to XML format, then remove/replace the dashes, then feed it back
to CF.

First off:
1.> Does this apply to CF5?
2.> If it does, what do the variable name(s) actually look like when they're
extracted (if they're even visible in that state)
3.> If they are visible, can I simply use them in their 'dash altered'
state.

Make sense?  Anyone else seen this article?

All this works great, however on the homepage of the site I wish to display 
the latest 5 records, I have a query that displays the latest five download 
titles on the homepage, this works great and is shown below.

However on the output for the query above how would I write it so that when I 
select a record it takes me straight to the downloadsmore.cfm page and 
displays that current record.

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

An off topic comment on the code block above. Doing code like this,
where you have a code branch for CF5 and a code branch for <5, will
result in an error if you turn on strict attribute validation. We ran
across this in a Spectra template and had to move the CF5 code into an

I would guess, it's nothing more than an extruded B, with beveled edges,
then rotated in 3 dimensions.  

You would be able to use 3dMax, but you probably don't need to go to those
extremes.  Any application that can do the above features should be able to
recreate the effect.  (Photoshop, Corel, etc.)

You could extend that applet though so that it could

Or, you could write something in DHTML that does the
same thing as the grid.  This is quite an undertaking,

It took almost six months before I had any sort of notification that my
account was active at cfm-resources.  So I never bothered uploading my site
there.  On the otherhand, I've been getting lots of emails from them and
their affiliates lately (3 or 4 times a month).

As for cheap CFM hosting, try www.readyhosting.com - $99 usd / year for 500
meg of storage, with CF 4.5.2 support.  They have been good in the past,
although in the last week or so I did not get a reply to a question I posted
regarding their support for CF5.  And sometimes their server is a little
slow to respond to page requests.  Otherwise, I've had little trouble with
them. I only have one site there at the moment though, which is dynamic, but
not complex.  So don't know if this would be a fair assessment.

Required with meran (odbc) on oracle8i/solaris/cf4.5

I encountered problem with merant drivers (odbc) for
oracle 8i on solaris.scenario is as follows

I have development,test,backup databases before moving
to my production.
Once my development freezes and i start moving tables
to test(before that i shall move test db to backup db)
I use Select * from ALL_TABLES where table_name='table
i indent to move to test db'
>if record exists then i execute "drop table ,create
table queries"
>If record doesn't exists then use "create table
queries"

The Problem i encounter is when i query the ALL_TABLES
for table name i am getting record count as 0(but in
real table exists)
So my create table queries fail.

I encounter this not often but 1 outof 10.

I know some of you donÂ’t know me but I found something and wanted to share

First, I remember from a long time ago hearing Red Skelton tell a story
about learning “The Pledge Of Allegiance” and remember it was very touching
to hear him tell the story. Recently (a couple of years ago) just after his

I just logged in and the software was there.  I think that they have
different levels of participation.  If you participated in the CF5 Server or
JRun betas I don't think you automatically qualified for the Studio Betas.
You'll need to send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and let them know your

I'm trying to do a query that counts how many times a particular company
showed up in the search results log table, how many times its URL was
clicked on, etc.  So, I'm left outer joining all the log tables, on the
chance that the company wasn't returned in any of the searches, its URL
was never clicked on, etc.  I thought the below logic was sound, but
instead of getting "14" for search_count, "4" for enhanced_count, "1"
for click_through_count, and "1" for contact_me_count, I'm getting "56"
for all.  In other words, 14*4*1*1.  Why is this happening?  Why aren't
I getting separate counts for each?

Here is the query.  Thank you so much in advance.

I..figured it out. Left worked fine..I just thought that might be quicker
than Like A%..

But..I had a ; somewhere in the SQL that was preventing it from reading any
further, hence throwing an error.

You'll need four separate queries for this.

When you JOIN(c.company_id=srl.company_id) and SELECT 
Count(srl.company_id), you get a count of all the srl
matches with a certain company id.

When you JOIN(c.company_id=srl.company_id) AND JOIN
(c.company_id=el.company_id), you get all the srl
matches, and then FOR EACH OF THOSE MATCHES, you also
get all el matches with the company id. Hence there's
a multiplier effect.

I ran into this same error today. The problem with my situation was that
I made a typo for the class="" attribute. I haven't worked with 
outlook
through com before so I don't know what class is correct, but I would
double check to make sure you've specified the correct class.

the first letter and leave the rest the same.  Add an LCase() around the
second CF Variable to lower case those letters.

Hi all, I'm just starting to learn coldfusion and I'm looking for a function
or a way to capitalize the first character of words in a string.  Can this
be done?  Can someone help me with this?

Left Outer Join Question

I know this is more SQL than CF, but this list is so responsive...

I'm trying to do a query that counts how many times a particular company
showed up in the search results log table, how many times its URL was
clicked on, etc.  So, I'm left outer joining all the log tables, on the
chance that the company wasn't returned in any of the searches, its URL
was never clicked on, etc.  I thought the below logic was sound, but
instead of getting "14" for search_count, "4" for enhanced_count, "1"
for click_through_count, and "1" for contact_me_count, I'm getting "56"
for all.  In other words, 14*4*1*1.  Why is this happening?  Why aren't
I getting separate counts for each?

Here is the query.  Thank you so much in advance.


   SELECT c.company, COUNT(srl.company_id) AS search_count,
COUNT(el.company_id) AS enhanced_count, COUNT(ctl.company_id) AS
click_through_count, COUNT(cfl.company_id) AS contact_me_count

Totally off topic, but as someone who likes .Net, I'll just say this is 
obvious. I myself have described .Net as a super COM object that comes 
with windows. If someone is critical of .Net as didn't know this 
already, they really dont have enough information to form any useful 
opinion. It would be an opinion based in ignorance. The article is FUD, 
plain and simple. The author doesn't even fully grasp the concept of 
what ActiveX is.

As I remember there is a left().

But you don't need it.

The SQl below should do you fine (replace the stuff in []'s with
the appropriate info):

Select [FIELDS]
FROM [TABLE]
WHERE [CategoryName] LIKE '#URL.Letter#%'

I'd also suggest a clustered index on the [CategoryName] field.

An off topic comment on the code block above. Doing code like this,
where you have a code branch for CF5 and a code branch for <5, will
result in an error if you turn on strict attribute validation. We ran
across this in a Spectra template and had to move the CF5 code into an

Depends on what you are doing... I recently had the same problem.. I was
saving the results of a db search to a wddx packet in a client var...
Till it got too big.

My work around was to save the search params in the client var and
requery the database to reget the same results

Though the "Long" data field in the CDATA table can handle up to 2GB,
we're getting an Oracle error (no. 1704) that the "string literal too
long" - apparently there's a 4000-character limitation.  I've exceeded
that with my 6500-character WDDX packet stored in a client variable. 

To use a longer string we need to use bind variables in Oracle - the
database guys are working on that now.

Anybody else deal with this?

Selecting All Categories that start with A..

Hey all,

I got a database that has like 120 categories.

The client wants A-Z along the top, and when A is clicked, only those
categories that start with A will show.

SO I'm trying to use SQL in the query, with a URL variable called Letter
passed when the user clicks the letter nav bar.

I am assuming that I can use a function such as Left() in SQL? Is there
anything like that?
How would I do something like this otherwise?

I'm not sure about performance issues, but from a logic standpoint, I'd
recommend always using a full UPDATE statement.  For a straight
modification of data from a simple form, CFUPDATE seems adequate.

However, this limits what you can do:
- limited server-side validation
- limited to one table

Some disadvantages:
- forces your form to expose information about your database

I acknowledge that CF is all about saving time, and CF tags tend to
be faster (to code) than raw SQL.  However, the biggest problem I see is
that developers use them as a crutch - you find yourself trying to shape
your logic so that CFUpdate will work - which you should never do.  Your
logic drives your code, not the other way around.

I dont do VBScript, so my example is in JScript but I the concept is the 
same.

rs=DBConnect.Execute(strSQL);
//this returns a recordset object with the results of the SQL query

while (!rs.EOF) {
println(rs.fields("IPAddress").Value);
rs.moveNext();
}
//this loops through the recordset displaying the records
rs.close();
rs = null;
//this closes the db connection, which cfquery does automatically.

The CF equivalent to this is:


SELECT IPAddress ...

Yeah, the more I dug into this I realized this is how clustercats was
monitoring the load state of each machine in  the cluster... I verified that
/btauxdir/cfprobe.cfm was public viewable over http://.

I went ahead and took a look at the log files for each web server and I can
see where ever 60 seconds or so a hit is made to cfprobe.cfm with a browser
agent of Allaire+ClusterCATS+probe.  I can even see my own hits to the page
as well hitting inbetween clusterCATS polling the state.  Unfortunatly there
is no apparent error happening. =(

Anyone else have any ideas?

couldn't access cfprobe.cfm.  The method ClusterCats uses to decide where to
look for cfprobe.cfm is not clear to me, and if it can't get it for any

Think of the orr.Next as a counter, VB doesn't (and this is off the toip
of my head) allow Recordsets to be returned in one hit, and you need to
use the cursor to move between rows.

So in that case instead of this:
 
 Set orr=DBConnect.Execute(strSQL)

You do this:-

 Cfquery name="QueryName" datasource="">
  Sql goes here.
 /cfquery

 Then doing cfoutput query="QueryName" or using cfloop to go through the
returned records!!

There is no direct analog to this in CF, because querying databases and
looping over recordsets is handled instead using CFQUERY and CFOUTPUT,
which
is a bit simpler than the way you'd do it with ADO in ASP. CF, unlike
VBS in
ASP, doesn't provide objects with methods (such as the Recordset object
with
its MoveNext method).

If you wanted to build something as similar in CF to your VBS/ASP code,
you
could use a loop within a CFSCRIPT block, although that wouldn't be an
exact
analog either:

UPDATE vs CFUPDATE

This is actually one circumstance where using cfupdate is permissble.
Oracle has a limitaition of only being able to insert/update a max of 255
chars in a text field on an insert/update command.  That means you either
have to write a stored procedure to read and insert/update 255 chars at a
time or use a cfinsert or cfupdate.

Re: PDF/Verity CF 5?

If mem serves correctly  its Adobe's switch to unicode support in
version 4 and 5 of the Acrobat product that causes the grief for the verity
engine bundled with CF 4x.

Wonder if you opened several of the pdf's in question in the full version of
acrobat 4, and elected to Save As - version 3 of acrobat.  Acrobat 4x allows
you to elect which version you want to Save As.  Dunno know if your using
some advanced features of Acro 4 / 5 - maybe you need that.

Maybe someone on the PDFZone.com site or www.planetpdf.com has a tool for
sale that will do the conversion "en masse" back to Acrobat 3x.

You may also want to drop a note to Dylan Bromby [ dont know where he's at
now ] - he posted a note that he had it working CF4.5/Verity/Acro4x.

It is not possible to fully address your question with the information 
which you provide.  That said, the number one gotcha in converting asp to 
cf is refusing to believe how simple it is.

In general, unless you are nesting result sets, you want to loop through 
the results using This result line is

Can we see some more code, specifically what they are doing with the data
fields.  The MoveNext command is the ASP way of moving through a recordset.
Something like

You should be able to do exactally the same thing with a CFOUTPUT tag
referencing your query.  Post some code.

NT is excepted.

Win9x is limited in the amount of RAM it can allocate, anything more than
128 is junk..

Win2k Server/Advanced Server/Datacenter can scale up to gigs and gigs of
RAM and as you said, with better garbage collection than previous versions.
I think the lowest one is 2 Gig for W2k Server.

NT is excepted here) allocates only 125 of RAM ( or some such low number)
no matter how much RAM you have installed.  Win2000 handles RAM much
better and you don't keep getting the "low resources" message.

I ran into the same trouble and just kept "unnecessary" applications or
resources
closed.  Allaire has this information in its knowledgebase, I believe,
because
they are the ones that explained it.

General question here -

I'm going to assume windows allocates certain percentages of memory (RAM)
  to specific software programs, is there a way to change this?  The
  reason Im asking is I frequently run out of memory (RAM) and get odd
  error messages from programs saying not enough memory.  Well, I have
  recently upgraded my work PC to 1/2 GIG of RAM from 256, but still
  get these screwy messages.  I admit I do have a lot of applications
  open on my workstation but I would think I would run out of 1/2 GIG
  of RAM that easily. I am running a P3 667 w/ 500 MEG RAM.

Applications running when error messages occur:

IE 5.5, MS Access 97', windows explorer, Lotus Notes, SQL query analyzer,
  SQL Enterprise Manager, AOL instant messenger. (I would not think
  this would be enough to yield memory errors, but as soon as I shut
  one down all is well.)

Although arrTest1 and arrTest2 are arrays, the variable set on line #14
creates a copy of the array but a pointer reference to the embedded
structure.  You'll see that when you output the embedded simple value from
each array, they will have been changed independantly.  However, you'll find
that the change made to the embedded structure in the second array also
changes the structure in the first array.

As a best practice, you should always run a code example like the one above
if you are uncertain if your variable set need to use the duplicate()
function.  Better safe than sorry.  :)

Arrays aren't complex variables, so they are passed by value anyway. I made
the same mistake myself; I thought they were complex variables.

real time processing II

Thanks to all for the input, I'm glad I asked before getting in too deep...
I think I'm going to ditch CF for 2 of the 3 "real time" projects I have on
the plate. The one that I have attempted is definitely not even near real
time, but goes something like this: I cfhttp a file every 15 minutes. When a
user first loads the page, I have init (param) values set to 0. The file
gets parsed and I compare the first set of values with the param values. I
then begin to feed the controls and the meters smoothly ramp up to the first
data set points over the next fifteen minutes. I then re-get the file, which
has been overwritten with a new set of values. These are in turn compared to
the last set and a range is then fed to the controls which then ramp to that
set over the ensuing 15 minute period. So, its kind of a smoothed
representation of what is happening with a 15 minute lag. It seems safe that
CF can accomplish this much.

Thanks for the help.

I did indeed find the tag.  I was looking for a file named
cf_boolsearch.cfm, not boolsearch.cfm.

Also, thanks for the link to the tag source.  I was modifying the source to
work with an Oracle database (which is case sensitive, unlike the Sql Server
db that was being used).

If anyone wants a copy of the modified tag, please let me know.

filled up a client var

Hi, I've just filled up a client variable - what now?

Though the "Long" data field in the CDATA table can handle up to 2GB, we're getting an 
Oracle error (no. 1704) that the "string literal too long" - apparently there's a 
4000-character limitation.  I've exceeded that with my 6500-character WDDX packet 
stored in a client variable. 

To use a longer string we need to use bind variables in Oracle - the database guys are 
working on that now.

Anybody else deal with this?

You need to execute the query first (what the VBScript execute is doing)
with:


  SELECT blah from blah


Then loop thru the query with a  or .  Check
the CF docs for details.

 There is no "movenext" in CF.  There is no concept of a pointer to a
current record.  You can look at any or all of the results at any time.
