sounds like the problem is with the DB you are using. Not sure how
formatting the number with CF once you have pulled it from the db would
help.

What DB is it you are using?

I have searched hi and low for some explination, but am at a loss.

I have a column in the db: weight, it is a float

Values can range beyond 123445.23223 and .03322323

Is there a way to use numberformat so you can show these as they
 are... when
I stick .03322323 into the database, it comes out

 3.32232299E-2

Can't use decimalformat, need the multiple decimals ...
 numberformat either
padds too many spaces or doesn't give me enough..

Anyone have any good recommendations for formating variable sized numbers
 with decimals?

 Thank

BIG VULNERABILITY

2002-04-22 Thread Dowdell, Jason G

Hi All,

I found this on cfdjlist and found it very worth of posting here since this
list
is getting more traffic than cfdjlist these days. I've tried this test on
several
of our more well known CF sites and many of them failed.

Good morning:

I wanted to pass this one along from the webappsec list. CF 4 and 4.5 also
appear to be vulnerable to this- the workaround is ok. I'm battening down
the hatches this morning.

Kudos to Peter Grundl for finding this and letting us know.

 Released: 18th Apr 2002

 Problem:

Requests for certain DOS-devices are parsed by the isapi filter that
handles .cfm and .dbm and result in error messages containing the
physical path to the web root.

 Vulnerable:
 ===
 - Coldfusion 5.0 on Windows 2000 w. IIS5
 - Other versions were not tested.

 Details:

Requests for non-existant .cfm and .dbm files return a coldfusion
Object Not Found error message similar to this:

 Error Occurred While Processing Request
  Error Diagnostic Information
  An error has occurred.

  HTTP/1.0 404 Object Not Found

 Requesting a DOS-device, such as nul.dbm or nul.cfm returns:

 Error Occurred While Processing Request
  Error Diagnostic Information
  Cannot open CFML file

The requested file C:\data\nul.dbm cannot be found.

The specific sequence of files included or processed is:
  C:\data\nul.dbm

  Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0; T312461)
  Remote Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

A similar result can be achieved with this request:

 /nul..dbm

 which returns:

 Error Occurred While Processing Request
  Error Diagnostic Information
The template specification, 'C:\data\nul..dbm', is illegal.

Template specifications cannot include '..' nor begin with a backslash
 ('\\').

CF's Most Wanted ::

2002-04-22 Thread Tyler Silcox

(Features, that is...)

With all this talk of learning other languages to flesh out your portfolio, and more
importantly your knowledge, along with the looming release of NEO/CFMX, I've been
trying to think of the features that I currently miss in my ColdFusion. And I thought
what better way to get Macromedia's attention, then by creating a heated discussion
among the leading, path-forging cf users, which obviously reside on this list (yes,
I'm buttering you up.)

It seams to me that we see some of the same issues puzzling new or begginer users over
and over again, or some great features that are available though creative uses of
custom tags are not readily available to those developers hosting on shared servers.
And I feel that MM could easily add some nice new tags or attributes to current tags
that solve most everyone's problems (and I know nothing is that easy, but it'd be
nice.) I also know most of us have submitted feature requests on MM's site, but the
community never really geats to chime in. So what I'd like to do is gather up a few
of your ideas for improving ColdFusion just to let MM know what we're are thinking.
I'm also very interested in what other developers are thinking, and I'm sure y'all are
too.

I know that timing probably isn't the best for their very, very busy brains over in MM
land right now, but there really isn't anytime better than the present.

Here's some of the basic probelms that I've come across and that I've seen pop up on
this list over and over from the last couple of years:

cfmail/cfpop:
Needs more stability, more power, ability to read and write multi-part messages
(at least), maybe kill the spool or move straight to the a Java spool
(with NEO's Java backbone, there really is no excuse not to revamp this tag)

cfimage (new tag):
Abilty to resize images on the fly, store in cache, read dimensions, etc.
(should be a cinch with Macromedia's expertise in graphic products [yea, right])

locking:
Needs to protect the server. Period.

cfgraph:
Use flash to it's fullest. The current tag is a start, but still weak. Needs
options galore.

cfdirectory:
Please just give us one more attribute (filesonly=True, or type=file) or update
filter to accept type=file or type=dir. Those directory dots irk me 99% of the
time I use the tag.

c# support:
I'm not even sure this is a possilbilty and it's probably a little early to call
for it, but something to think about.

And I know that a lot of these features are available as custom tags, etc, right now.
But it's not always a feasible option for many developers who are on a monetary or
time constraint, or are just hosting on a public server that doesn't allow custom
tags. (Honestly, I'm not trying to put anyone out of business.)

NOTE: I'm also aware that some some of these things may already be alleviated or
improved upon in NEO. For all the Beta testers and PDA hounds out there, please do
not jump in on this discussion and say That's already developed and then the
subsequent You're not allowed to say that and then I have to say Please keep this
discussion in a pre-NEO context etc, etc. So, I'll go ahead and say that now, please
keep this discussion to pre-NEO improvements. Although NEO is on it's way, please
just submit features you have thought and dreamt about prior to NEO, and future
releases.

Anyways, I really think that the best minds in the cf community are hanging amidst us,
so please share your thoughts and ideas, and maybe we can make CF an even easier, more
robust, powerful product-

I would be at anyone's mercy if they could do this for me.

1.Create a sequence DeptCodeSeq to generate dept codes in the
range

1000, 1020, 1040, . .., 9080

Create table called Departments that has the following columns in it.

DeptCode

Name

DeptSize

NUMBER(4)

VARCHAR2(30)

NUMBER(5)

Create a PL/SQL anonymous block called POPDEPTS.sql (Populate
Department )
using FOR .. LOOP that uses the DeptCodeSeq to generate the department
code
and the name

Where the name is constructed as DEPT-1020 DEPT-1040, and so on. That is
the
name of the department is the concatenation of DEPT- and the
department
code generated by the sequence. As each row is inserted print out the
department t code and department name delimited by ';' on a separate
line. (
use the DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ).

When testing your code you may need to constantly drop your sequence and
create it until your PL/SQL block works correctly.

DECLARE

...

..

BEGIN

Your code goes here

( you need FOR .. LOOP statement )

END;

2.Create a PL/SQL block to delete from Departments the
departments
that have their name ending in 40 and 80 digits.

There are plenty of CFX tags out there that do this. I'm not saying we

Sure - the answer is to use locking - but I'm assuming your saying that
we _shouldnt_ need locking for server stability. There will _always_ be
a need for logical type locks.

I agree 100%. C++ and VB syntax covers most of what you have down
there, and the fundamentals of those languages prepares for pretty much
anything else you'll run across. A couple of extra concepts, like OO

Hi All,

I found this on cfdjlist and found it very worth of posting here since this
list
is getting more traffic than cfdjlist these days. I've tried this test
on
several
of our more well known CF sites and many of them failed.

Thanks for the heads-up (again), but this was discussed here several times
last week. Check the archives if you need more info.

Thanks,
Dave.

Dynamic Pages and Search Engines

2002-04-22 Thread Smith, Daron [PA]

I've read through the archives and Ben Forta's article on friendly URL's and
I don't think anything addresses this issue. I could be wrong though.

I'm working on a new site that's essentially all database driven, a typical
url is category.cfm?ID=4 . If I want the contents of this page to be
indexed with the necessary database data how would I go about doing that?
Ben's article and other posts mention replacing the '?' with a '/' but isn't
that just going to get the information that is in the cfm file without the
db data? My query needs the '4' to retrieve the relevant content, without
that there is no content on the page worth searching. How does the spider
know that there should be a '4' on the end of the query string? And that
there should also be 15 other category identifiers that go with the
category.cfm page?

How do I get spiders to crawl these kinds of pages in their 'content filled'
stages not just the static text.

Thanks for any help,

RE: viewing code in Netscape

2002-04-22 Thread Matthew R. Small

Nope, doesn't work. Thanks.

If you're using Netscape 6.2 or something close, see if it happens to
you as well:

The second page after http://showstopperonline.com/new_form/index.cfm
Is the page that I am having problems with.

The url for that page is:
http://showstopperonline.com/new_form/reg_form_electronic2.cfm

Question 2: I posted this last week but haven't solved it yet:

Using Netscape 4.08, can somebody check out the second page
(reg_form_electronic2.cfm) and tell me why if I can through the
index.cfm page to arrive at the second page then the javascript does not
work, but if I go through the first page, then it does? View trhe
source of the second page, it's a weird Missing Post Operation error
that is the source. I totally don't understand it at all.

Thanks,

Access /SQL Server

2002-04-22 Thread Jerry Staple

Hi,
We have recently migrated an access database to sql server 2000. The
transfer has gone great and the site runs quicker in 98% of the site
However there is one page (around 1500 lines of code) which carries out
allot of calculations and references 2 tables with about 20 records
in each of them. We have found that the page still runs quicker in an
access database than a sql server db, we have also checked indexes and
created stored procedure for a number of the queries.

Can anyone tell me what we should check for as currently it is running
about 3 times slower?

RE: Access /SQL Server

2002-04-22 Thread Andy Ewings

Sounds like the majority processing on this page is CF. Check the debugging
output and see how long the SQL queries take. If your SQL queries are
taking a noticable abmount of time then I'd suggest ensuring that your
indexes are correct and that your Transact SQL is effecient. Without seeing
the code it's hard to suggest what it is. Is this page
inserting/updating/or deleting data? if so your indexes will increase the
time it takes to execute the SQL statement and hence the page as all of your
indexes have to be rebuilt when an action other than a select is performed
on the table.

(should be a cinch with Macromedia's expertise in graphic
 products [yea, right])

There are plenty of CFX tags out there that do this. I'm not saying we
shouldn't do it - just that solutions exist already. :)

 locking:
Needs to protect the server. Period.

Sure - the answer is to use locking - but I'm assuming your saying that
we _shouldnt_ need locking for server stability. There will _always_ be
a need for logical type locks.

 cfdirectory:
Please just give us one more attribute (filesonly=True,
or type=file) or update filter to accept type=file or
type=dir. Those directory dots irk me 99% of the time I
 use the tag.

Hey, just use startrow=3 when looping. ;)

 c# support:
I'm not even sure this is a possilbilty and it's probably
a little early to call for it, but something to think about.

Um - you mean writing C#? Why? That's like asking for Perl support. Why
not just use perl.exe?

NOTE: I'm also aware that some some of these things may
already be alleviated or improved upon in NEO. For all the
Beta testers and PDA hounds out there, please do not jump in
on this discussion and say That's already developed and
then the subsequent You're not allowed to say that and then
I have to say Please keep this discussion in a pre-NEO
context etc, etc. So, I'll go ahead and say that now,
please keep this discussion to pre-NEO improvements.
Although NEO is on it's way, please just submit features you
have thought and dreamt about prior to NEO, and future releases.

Neo, what's Neo? :)

And if there is a need for cflock, why doesn't client vars
 use them?

There aren't any concurrency issues for Client variables. They're not stored
in memory. They're typically stored in a database or registry, which will
provide its own concurrency controls, or in cookies, which have no
concurrency issues.

cfinclude template=content.cfm

If you're not on CF5, look up CF_BodyContent from the fusebox.org website.

why will there always be a need for using cflock with session

Should they manage muliple access automatically?

I wasn't talking about always needing locks for session vars. I'm
talking about issues like so:

cfset session(or app or whatever)x = x + 1

In this case, you want to make sure only one thread is incrementing the
value of X. Using a lock ensures this.

I think you'd need to use CFFILE to read a file's contents into a
variable. Otherwise, you can create a custom tag that uses
ThisTag.GeneratedContent to write the markup between the opening and
closing tag calls to a variable. Contact me off-list if you want a copy

RE: viewing code in Netscape

This is probably the known issue of Mozilla, which Netscape 6 was based
on.

The bug was simple, and stupid. If you view source on a form action
page, the browser would re-request the source.

Yes, that's stupid - very stupid.

It was only fixed in the very latest release of Mozilla, rc1.

debugging
output and see how long the SQL queries take. If your SQL queries are
taking a noticable abmount of time then I'd suggest ensuring that your
indexes are correct and that your Transact SQL is effecient. Without
seeing
the code it's hard to suggest what it is. Is this page
inserting/updating/or deleting data? if so your indexes will increase
the
time it takes to execute the SQL statement and hence the page as all of
your
indexes have to be rebuilt when an action other than a select is

Hi,
We have recently migrated an access database to sql server 2000. The

However there is one page (around 1500 lines of code) which carries out

created stored procedure for a number of the queries.

Can anyone tell me what we should check for as currently it is running

RE: viewing code in Netscape

I'm using Netscape 4.78 (I uninstalled 6.0 and haven't been back yet), and in this
browser it's viewing the source just fine. I'm not very familiar with later versions
so I can't be of much help, sorry.

To the best of my knowledge, Netscape doesn't (or didn't until after 4.78) cache pages
from a POST operation. To view the source you have to either hit Control-R to repost
while you're looking at the source, or save the page and view in a text editor. It's a
pain.

RE: Access /SQL Server

2002-04-22 Thread Andy Ewings

Turn debugging on for your IP address and see how many milliseconds the page
takes to execute, then see how many milliseconds the SQL statements take to
execute, that way you can tell whether it is your SQL or your CF which is
the major part of the overhead. If it is your SQL then ensure that your
Transact SQL has no big overhead - e.g. If you are using cursors in your SQL
code this will have a v.large overhead. If however you are using ANSI
standard SQL (which it sounds like you are if you have mapped directly from
Access to SQL with no changes/additions) then I'm stuck as to what to
suggest. It may come down to the ODBC drivers you are using - i.e. the ODBC
driver for access is better than the SQL one that you are using. Try
swapping to OLEDB to see if this gives you any improvements although I'd be
very surprised if it did

RE: Using cftransaction/cftransaction... Why?

2002-04-22 Thread Dave Watts

Is there much of a processing cost to this? If not why
wouldn't I surround all my associated query blocks with
 the cftransaction tags.

Nothing is free, including CFTRANSACTION. When you designate a set of
queries as a transaction, the database has to take special actions which
typically limit what other transactions can do while your transaction is
running. (Note that any single query is a transaction - it'll either
succeed or fail in its entirety.) So, if you unnecessarily chain a bunch of
queries together within a single transaction, that may cause a significant
bottleneck.

That being said, if you do have associated queries, and they do need to be
treated as a single, atomic database operation, you'll need to group them
together within a transaction. If possible, you might do this within a
stored procedure, which will generally run faster.

RE: Dynamic Pages and Search Engines

2002-04-22 Thread Robert Everland

Google indexs pages fine that have a ? in them. Not all search engines do,
so a lot of us want to be covered by all bases cause you never know where
you could get a big surge in traffic. So Ben and others, www.erikv.com have
created tags you can place in your application.cfm that will parse
everything after .cfm so you can have category.cfm?ID=4 be
category.cfm/ID/4. The tag will parse everything back and make ID a url
variable equal to 4 so that coldfusion knows it is there. The search engine
is stupid though, it will only be able to index what is in front of it, so
you would have to have some way to show all of your other artciles if you
want those to be indexed also.

RE: Ben Forta's CFX_Spell tag -- demo?

2002-04-22 Thread Dave Watts

We're considering the addition of Ben Forta's CFX_Spell tag
to our site, and while I don't doubt the complete awesomeness
of it, it would be really cool to take a look at it before we
plunk down the $$$. (We are, after all, a nonprofit.)

Anyone got a publicly accessible usage of it I could take a
 quick look at it?

Well, I'm not sure what you'd see, since it's server-side code. You can
write whatever interface you like to use with it. We've used it before (not
on any publicly available sites that I can recall though), and in general
have been satisfied with it, except that it's not thread-safe, so you'll
have to wrap it in CFLOCK.

RE: CF's Most Wanted ::

2002-04-22 Thread Jeffry Houser

I think they were referring to CFX tags, not CFML Custom tags.
Even if you use the cf_tagname syntax, you can put them in the current
directory and CF will find them, thus removing any need for reliance on the
host.

At 10:39 AM 4/22/2002 -0400, you wrote:
Have you tried calling them via cfmodule rather than the traditional custom
tag method? That will let you put them anywhere you wish and remove your

Re: Access /SQL Server

2002-04-22 Thread Jim McAtee

Memory issues? MS SQL 2000 will use a lot more memory. When working with
small tables and datasets you may be staying within the bounds of physical
memory on the machine and never notice a difference. If you force the
system to use virtual memory, though, the slowdown could be the effects of
swapping to disk.

Sounds like the majority processing on this page is CF. Check the
 debugging
output and see how long the SQL queries take. If your SQL queries are
taking a noticable abmount of time then I'd suggest ensuring that your
indexes are correct and that your Transact SQL is effecient. Without
 seeing
the code it's hard to suggest what it is. Is this page
inserting/updating/or deleting data? if so your indexes will increase
 the
time it takes to execute the SQL statement and hence the page as all of
 your
indexes have to be rebuilt when an action other than a select is
 performed
 on the table.

 Hi,
We have recently migrated an access database to sql server 2000. The
transfer has gone great and the site runs quicker in 98% of the site
However there is one page (around 1500 lines of code) which carries out
allot of calculations and references 2 tables with about 20 records
in each of them. We have found that the page still runs quicker in an
access database than a sql server db, we have also checked indexes and
created stored procedure for a number of the queries.

Can anyone tell me what we should check for as currently it is running
 about 3 times slower?

Also, watch the locking. Make sure if there's select statements that you
use the SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED to ensure a dirty

Re: Equivalent to cffile under ASP ?

You can use the FileSystem object to do most of it (renaming, creating, etc)
Uploading is a different beast. Here is a list of asp upload components:

http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2189

You might also want to check aspfaq.com for other filesystem faqs as well.

Yeah... they're charging now, though. They actually would've been our first
choice, but I don't really want to have to monitor user sessions and
whatnot.

'Sides, our forums could probably burn through 10,000 user sessions in 2

As it turns out, forta's tag comes with some working examples, so crisis
averted. Call off the dogs.

RE: filename in code documentation - WHY?!

2002-04-22 Thread Rick Osborne

Gyrus asked:
Every instance of code documentation [..] I've seen has 'filename'
included.
Any reason? Surely it's spurious [..]

Is it?

I put the filename and virtual path of the file at the top of every CFM
file I write (or edit). [Ex: /Admin/People.cfm] Why? Because my job
is mainly writing intranets, extranets, and web site for clients. The
vast majority of the code is pretty much the same old thing:
add/edit/delete information from tables, or get info out of tables to
display. With a good common methodology and structure, any one of my
coworkers can open a file and quickly find the portion that they are
looking for. It's all too easy to write CF spaghetti code that is nigh
impossible to understand. A common structure is the only thing that
saves you from insanity.

The down side to this is that many of the files look the same at first
glance. That is, they all have pretty much the same structure: local
variables being initialized at the top, logic to check those variables
after that, logic to act on those variables after that, and finally a
big switch statement at the end to display the appropriate content. If
you even have a common variable naming convention (good for you!) then
that's another bit of abstraction that makes one page even more
indistinguishable from the next.

This is made even trickier by picky clients. Client A wants Column B
from Table C included in their results, but Client D wants Column E from
Table F. This changes query and display logic, and even occasionally
business logic. But, the code is still just similar enough such that
only a few lines will be different here or there. If I'm working on
several of these files at the same time, Ctrl-Tab-ing back and forth
between then, opening and closing other files, and I don't have a
filename at the top ... well, it gets very easy to forget which is
which. Especially after The Boss comes in and distracts me for 5
minutes with his idea of what the Next Big Thing is. It's easy enough
to Ctrl-Home to the top of the document to make sure that I come back to
the same document I think I've come back to.

So that's why I put the filename (and path) at the top of every
document.

-R

P.S. - A non-programming coworker brought up an excellent point about CF
Studio the other day: Wouldn't it be nice if each file had an associated
context for the file/directory tree? That is, when you switched between
open files the file and directory browsers would atomagically switch
back to the last place they had been *for that file*. It's so simple
it's positively brilliant, and yet I've never heard another programmer
say it. From the mouths of babes ...

cfset MyValue = ReFind([^A-Za-z0-9], Form.Password)
cfif MyValue GT 0
send error

go
/cfif

Basically the [^A-Za-z0-9] is saying everything except A-Za-z0-9 so it will
find all your non alphanum chars and will return the location of the first
one it finds.

I think you could do it with posix too.

2002-04-22 Thread Jerry Johnson

At a very simple level, the POSIX class [:digit:] can be used wherever you would type
a single character or group of characters.

What I mean by this:

REFind(a,Form.Password)

the class can fit where a character would go.

REFind([:class:],Form.Password)

It MEANS something different than that character, but it FITS in the same place.

What it sounds like you want is to find out if all the characters in your password are
[:alnum:], yes?

OR, stated another way, you want to find out if any characters in password are NOT
[:alnum:]?

As Sean suggested, you do this by looking for anything NOT in the class.

cfif REFind([^[:alnum:]],Form.Password)

Very cool. I'm going to try it! Thanks so much. The funny thing is that
as good as some documentation is, for me... a few real-world examples go a
long way. Too many docs try to focus on the mumbo jumbo rules (which are
good for reference, but don't get you anywhere fast). I'm sure once I use a
few of these things, I'll get the hang of it. So, thanks again, Sean and
Jerry.

RE: JavaScript/CFinclude

2002-04-22 Thread Haggerty, Michael A.

I am assuming this is just a standard pop up window, and not some modal
thing...

Perhaps you want to consider doing this in straight javascript?

window.open ('newwin', 'content.cfm', [attributes]);

Or, if you are feeling really cool, try writing the new window without
loading the one off the server:

!--- I know this code is a little off, but with some tweeking it would
work.) //---

var content = '';
content = 'htmlheadtitlesometitle/title/headbody';
content = content + '#the content for the new page#';
content = content + '/body/html';
window.open('newwin','blank.htm','');
window.document.write(content);

Re: RegEx for alpha num

2002-04-22 Thread Jim McAtee

It sounds like you want to make sure the password only consists of letters
and numbers. I think the following would be what you're looking for:

REFind(^[[:alnum:]]+$, #Form.Password#)

^ matches the beginning of the string
$ matches the end of the string
+ translates to 1 or more

The ^ and $ anchors are needed, since otherwise the regex will match if the
password string _contains_ an alphanumeric string, as in *-bob##.

You could also use a regex like:

^[[:alnum:]]{5,15}$

to make sure the password is betwee 5 and 15 characters in length.

Application Log Warnging using CFX Excel

2002-04-22 Thread Dave Hannum

We've successfully used the CFX_Excel tag for a couple of years now.
We've just upgraded our server, and we've now got a problem
with the usage of the tag. Here's the setup:

Windows 2000 Server
CF 5.0
Office 2000 (complete install)

When the CFX_Excel tag is invoked, the following warnings are generated in
the server's Applicaiton Log:

Warning #1
Detection of product '{00010409-781-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}' feature
'ExcelUserData', component '{8AD02C96-C8B7-11D1-9C67-F81F1B38}' failed

Warning #2
Detection of product '{00010409-78E1-1102-B60F-006097C998E7}', feature
'OfficeUserData', component '{C9AF9050-C8BE-11D1-9C67-F81F1B38}' failed.

We've tried everything (with Office and the CFX tag) from re-install, to
uninstall and re-install to having the Office disk in when the tag is
invoked. Nothing helps and this error fills the Application log about every
day (because the application is heavily used). Can anyone help or shed any
light on the problem?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Using cftransaction/cftransaction... Why?

2002-04-22 Thread Jochem van Dieten

Dave Watts wrote:

Nothing is free, including CFTRANSACTION. When you designate a set of
queries as a transaction, the database has to take special actions which
typically limit what other transactions can do while your transaction is
running. (Note that any single query is a transaction - it'll either
succeed or fail in its entirety.) So, if you unnecessarily chain a bunch of
queries together within a single transaction, that may cause a significant
 bottleneck.

Unless your database uses MVCC. When using MVCC the concept of a
transaction is slightly different, it is not just to group queries, it
is also to timestamp them and (in)validate the tuples that are affected
by them. Everything is in a transaction, it simply is not possible to
have a query that is not in a transaction.

Converting from TIFF to Searchable PDF on the fly

2002-04-22 Thread Alex Santantonio

Does anyone know of a CFX tag, COM object, or other component that will be
able to convert TIFF images to searchable PDF documents on the fly? I think
it goes without saying, but I would like to accomplish this task using
ColdFusion. The TIFF files will reside locally on the server and I would
like to use a nightly scheduled batch process to convert all documents to
searchable PDF files. I have downloaded and installed an ActiveX component
called ScanButton that claims to do what I need, but I am receiving an error
message when attempting to run it. Also, I am aware of several other
options, such as Adobe Capture 3.0, so I am really looking for anyone with
experience or direction a component and some CF code samples. That is
ending up as the hardest item in this search. Thank You.

RE: SQL select question

2002-04-22 Thread Bryan Love

It sounds like your problem is not in the query, but in the output of the
query. Of course you will pull multiple entries with the same album, that
is to be expected. Try outputting like this:

cfoutput query=music group=musicType
#musicType#br
cfoutput group=albumTitle
-- #albumTitle#br
cfoutput
 #songTitle#br
/cfoutput
/cfoutput
/cfoutput

but in order for this to work you MUST AT LEAST order by musicType and
albumTitle:
ORDER BY musicType, albumTitle [add more here if you want]

RE: querying funky text files

2002-04-22 Thread Bryan Love

Fixed width makes it easy to convert, but if you are just querying you
shouldn't have to convert anything.

Just use Find() or something similar...
Refind() is capable of returning multiple results if you need that
instead...

Thank You.

RE: querying funky text files

2002-04-22 Thread Timothy Heald

That ones easy you need to just use the mid function, start with the first
number in the column definition, and then go to the end of the column.

CFSCRIPT
thisVar = mid(listGetAt(yourFileVariable, i, chr(13)), 1, 9);
/CFSCRIPT

This will return the variable in column one of row one. If you need to loop
through to get all the rows treat it like a list with chr(13) as the
delimiter. You should also be able to do something similar to return an
actual query set using the query functions. I am not sure but you may also
be able to set it up as a datasource. I have heard of it working for comma
and tab delimited files, just not fixed width. Let me know if it works
please, I would like to try it some time.

 (Features, that is...)

With all this talk of learning other languages to flesh out your
portfolio, and more importantly your knowledge, along with the looming
release of NEO/CFMX, I've been trying to think of the features that I
currently miss in my ColdFusion. And I thought what better way to get
Macromedia's attention, then by creating a heated discussion among the
leading, path-forging cf users, which obviously reside on this list (yes,
I'm buttering you up.)

It seams to me that we see some of the same issues puzzling new or
begginer users over and over again, or some great features that are
available though creative uses of custom tags are not readily available to
those developers hosting on shared servers. And I feel that MM could easily
add some nice new tags or attributes to current tags that solve most
everyone's problems (and I know nothing is that easy, but it'd be nice.)
I also know most of us have submitted feature requests on MM's site, but the
community never really geats to chime in. So what I'd like to do is gather
up a few of your ideas for improving ColdFusion just to let MM know what
we're are thinking. I'm also very interested in what other developers are
thinking, and I'm sure y'all are too.

I know that timing probably isn't the best for their very, very busy
brains over in MM land right now, but there really isn't anytime better than
the present.

Here's some of the basic probelms that I've come across and that I've seen
pop up on this list over and over from the last couple of years:

 cfmail/cfpop:
Needs more stability, more power, ability to read and write multi-part
messages (at least), maybe kill the spool or move straight to the a Java
spool
(with NEO's Java backbone, there really is no excuse not to revamp
this tag)

 cfimage (new tag):
Abilty to resize images on the fly, store in cache, read dimensions,
etc.
(should be a cinch with Macromedia's expertise in graphic products
[yea, right])

 locking:
Needs to protect the server. Period.

 cfgraph:
Use flash to it's fullest. The current tag is a start, but still
weak. Needs options galore.

 cfdirectory:
Please just give us one more attribute (filesonly=True, or
type=file) or update filter to accept type=file or type=dir. Those
directory dots irk me 99% of the time I use the tag.

 c# support:
I'm not even sure this is a possilbilty and it's probably a little
early to call for it, but something to think about.

And I know that a lot of these features are available as custom tags, etc,
right now. But it's not always a feasible option for many developers who
are on a monetary or time constraint, or are just hosting on a public server
that doesn't allow custom tags. (Honestly, I'm not trying to put anyone out
of business.)

NOTE: I'm also aware that some some of these things may already be
alleviated or improved upon in NEO. For all the Beta testers and PDA hounds
out there, please do not jump in on this discussion and say That's already
developed and then the subsequent You're not allowed to say that and then
I have to say Please keep this discussion in a pre-NEO context etc, etc.
So, I'll go ahead and say that now, please keep this discussion to pre-NEO
improvements. Although NEO is on it's way, please just submit features you
have thought and dreamt about prior to NEO, and future releases.

Anyways, I really think that the best minds in the cf community are
hanging amidst us, so please share your thoughts and ideas, and maybe we can
make CF an even easier, more robust, powerful product-

2002-04-22 Thread Troy Simpson

Dear CF-Talkers:

I have a string in the following format( I've added carriage returns for
readability):

cfset agents =
'agent primary=NO aid=157 acutter=O469Oldenburg, Claes Thure,
b.1929/agent'
'agent primary=NO aid=2481 acutter=B847Bruggen, Coosje van,
b.1942/agent'
'agent primary=YES aid=9387 acutter=B343Berger, Patrick, b.
1947/agent'

I want to process the string to look like this (replace the AGENT tags with
ANCHOR tags):

cfset agents =
'a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=157Oldenburg, Claes Thure, b.1929/a'
'a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=2481Bruggen, Coosje van, b.1942/a'
'a href=reulsts.cfm?c=aidq=9387Berger, Patrick, b. 1947/a'

I have somewhat accomplished this like so but still need some work and have
become a little lost.

REReplaceNoCase(
agent,

'agent[[:space:]]+primary=(YES|NO)[[:space:]]+aid=([0-9]*)[[:space:]]+a
cutter=([a-z0-9]*)(.*)?/agent',
' a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=\2\4/a ',
ALL)

**Another problem is that the AGENT Attributes can be in any order which
really throughs wrench into things.

Anyone have any advise on how to approach this?
I would really appreciated it.

Thanks,
Troy

Re: filename in code documentation - WHY?!

2002-04-22 Thread Gyrus

 If I'm working on
several of these files at the same time, Ctrl-Tab-ing back and
forth between then, opening and closing other files, and I don't
have a filename at the top ... well, it gets very easy to forget
which is which. Especially after The Boss comes in and distracts
me for 5 minutes with his idea of what the Next Big Thing is.
It's easy enough to Ctrl-Home to the top of the document to
make sure that I come back to the same document I think I've
 come back to.

Isn't it even easier to look at the file tabs across the bottom of CF
Studio for the filename?

I agree that a Synch TOC-type function to get the open file and the
explorer tab working together would be great. But for now, if you're
unsure about where the current file is, you just look across Studio's
title bar at the top. Yet again, another place you can check for the
filename as well. Putting it inside the file comments still seems
totally spurious.

Someone mentioned that Fusedoc comments need the filename in the header
comments as XML data so files can be parsed automatically in certain
ways. This makes sense, but again, surely whatever parsing could work
from the name of the file itself?

Well, I'm ditching filenames in code comment headers for now, unless
someone comes up with a good argument!

When the ODBC DSN was set up, the default database is master, so you are
trying to connect to the Events table in the master database which doesn't

The solution will be to edit the ODBC DSN to point to the proper database

  (Features, that is...)

With all this talk of learning other languages to flesh out
your
portfolio, and more importantly your knowledge, along with the
looming
release of NEO/CFMX, I've been trying to think of the features
that I
currently miss in my ColdFusion. And I thought what better way
to get
Macromedia's attention, then by creating a heated discussion
among the
leading, path-forging cf users, which obviously reside on this
list (yes,
 I'm buttering you up.)

It seams to me that we see some of the same issues puzzling
new or
begginer users over and over again, or some great features that
are
available though creative uses of custom tags are not readily
available to
those developers hosting on shared servers. And I feel that MM
could easily
add some nice new tags or attributes to current tags that solve
most
everyone's problems (and I know nothing is that easy, but it'd
be nice.)
I also know most of us have submitted feature requests on MM's
site, but the
community never really geats to chime in. So what I'd like to
do is gather
up a few of your ideas for improving ColdFusion just to let MM
know what
we're are thinking. I'm also very interested in what other
developers are
thinking, and I'm sure y'all are too.

I know that timing probably isn't the best for their very,
very busy
brains over in MM land right now, but there really isn't anytime
better than
 the present.

Here's some of the basic probelms that I've come across and
that I've seen
pop up on this list over and over from the last couple of years:

  cfmail/cfpop:
Needs more stability, more power, ability to read and
write multi-part
messages (at least), maybe kill the spool or move straight to
the a Java
 spool
(with NEO's Java backbone, there really is no excuse not
to revamp
 this tag)

  cfimage (new tag):
Abilty to resize images on the fly, store in cache, read
dimensions,
 etc.
(should be a cinch with Macromedia's expertise in graphic
products
 [yea, right])

  locking:
Needs to protect the server. Period.

  cfgraph:
Use flash to it's fullest. The current tag is a start,
but still
 weak. Needs options galore.

  cfdirectory:
Please just give us one more attribute (filesonly=True, or
type=file) or update filter to accept type=file or
type=dir.  Those
directory dots irk me 99% of the time I use the tag.

  c# support:
I'm not even sure this is a possilbilty and it's probably
a little
early to call for it, but something to think about.

And I know that a lot of these features are available as
custom tags, etc,
right now. But it's not always a feasible option for many
developers who
are on a monetary or time constraint, or are just hosting on a
public server
that doesn't allow custom tags. (Honestly, I'm not trying to
put anyone out
 of business.)

NOTE: I'm also aware that some some of these things may
already be
alleviated or improved upon in NEO. For all the Beta testers
and PDA hounds
out there, please do not jump in on this discussion and say
That's already
developed and then the subsequent You're not allowed to say
that and then
I have to say Please keep this discussion in a pre-NEO context
etc, etc.
So, I'll go ahead and say that now, please keep this discussion
to pre-NEO
improvements. Although NEO is on it's way, please just submit
features you
have thought and dreamt about prior to NEO, and future releases.

Anyways, I really think that the best minds in the cf
community are
hanging amidst us, so please share your thoughts and ideas, and
maybe we can
make CF an even easier, more robust, powerful product-

Dear CF-Talkers:

I have a string in the following format( I've added carriage returns for
readability):

cfset agents =
'agent primary=NO aid=157 acutter=O469Oldenburg, Claes Thure,
b.1929/agent' 'agent primary=NO aid=2481
acutter=B847Bruggen, Coosje van, b.1942/agent'  'agent
primary=YES aid=9387 acutter=B343Berger, Patrick, b.
1947/agent'

I want to process the string to look like this (replace the AGENT tags
with ANCHOR tags):

cfset agents =
'a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=157Oldenburg, Claes Thure, b.1929/a'
'a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=2481Bruggen, Coosje van, b.1942/a'
'a href=reulsts.cfm?c=aidq=9387Berger, Patrick, b. 1947/a'

I have somewhat accomplished this like so but still need some work and
have become a little lost.

REReplaceNoCase(
agent,

'agent[[:space:]]+primary=(YES|NO)[[:space:]]+aid=([0-9]*)[[:space:
]]+a
cutter=([a-z0-9]*)(.*)?/agent',
' a href=results.cfm?c=aidq=\2\4/a ',
ALL)

**Another problem is that the AGENT Attributes can be in any order which
really throughs wrench into things.

Anyone have any advise on how to approach this?
I would really appreciated it.

Thanks,
Troy

Actually, this looks like a UDF candidate for cflib.org. Ray Camden?

I don't have time to format it nicely for cflib.org. Anyone wants to
volunteer? :)

// Assuming that strFind and strReplace has no RegExp characters that
need to be escaped
// else, someone has to make this UDF more robust! ;)
function SwapTag(strSource, strFind, strReplace) {
var retVal = strSource;
// make sure that the substring to find is not empty.
if (Len(Trim(strFind))) {
retVal = REFindNoCase(strSource,

}
return retVal;

And if there is a need for cflock, why doesn't client vars

There aren't any concurrency issues for Client variables.

It is my firm and biased opinion that memory variable concurrency locking
should be part of the application server code and not performed in the

There aren't any concurrency issues for Client variables. They're not stored

provide its own concurrency controls, or in cookies, which have no
concurrency issues.
