Group Query help.

2005-12-14 Thread Nomad
Hello!
How do I limit the number of rows returned per group in a grouped query.
My query:
Select pid, Details, Brand from Products group by brand order by price

This query returns:

pid Details Brand
1abcdMacromedia
2efgh Macromedia
3efgh Corel
4abcf Corel
5errerAdobe

etc etc.

What I want to achieve is to limit the max number of rows returned per group
to say 5.
So if there are 10 Macromedia products in my db only 5 rows would show up.
Please note that my aim is not to limit the total number of rows returned
with a Top statement or similar.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Re: GIF Pipes/AJAX/async gateway

2005-12-14 Thread James Holmes
The CF will perform its job when the page is created, thus providing
the initial state of the page. The JS will take over from that point.
I've blended the two as per your example in the past with no problems.

RE: backslash-digit interpreted in strings

2005-12-14 Thread Matthew Walker
That's a back reference. It refers to the fifth parenthesised section in
your regex. Of course you probably don't have a fifth parenthesised
section, so it's replaced with an empty string. You should be able to
just replace all "\" in your replacement string with "\\" first to fix
this.

I'm using REReplace and the replacement string contains a "\5".
The string came from a FORM, it was never a literal on a page.
Nonetheless, ColdFusion appears to process it out and it disappears.

Can anyone explain that this is not a straight out bug?

Re: How can I use a .Net DLL with CFMX?

2005-12-14 Thread dave
Charlie,
First off all I am not trying to attack your product, actually I have a project
coming up where it might interest me so I watch myspace very carefully to see
how it performs.

Now, sorry but I don't by that explaination. 6-7 montha ago myspace was
supposed to be running bd and then their were probs and as well all now and
remember your ceo's reaction to that, if you don't search seans
blog.

And yes I am away of the size of myspace and all their servers and yada yada
yada, and yes I have seen errors with their code exposed and it looked like a
2nd grader was writing it.

So it's been what at least 6 months now? How much time do they need?

But the real reason why I can't rely on what you state below is that I haven't
seen a macromedia cfm error in months and the ones I see generally are a bit
nicer and believe me I know what error messags look like, after all I help will
a lot ;) haha But the errors I see certainly arent macromedia ones.

Like I said, bd might have a place for me but as far as myspace goes I don't
see any improvements at all and really it couldnt be much worse then it was,
now if myspace was now "smokin along" and acting like a real app then I would
be all over bd.

Subject: Re: How can I use a .Net DLL with CFMX?

Dave, MySpace is not yet running entirely on BD, so the problems you're seeing
may just as well be code running on CF5, but failing simply because the volume
of traffic is absolutely staggering.

MySpace is either the 3rd or 4th highest trafficed web site of all, above
google, (in terms of page views), depending on who you talk to (see
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2005/tc20051115_908925.htm or
http://news.designtechnica.com/article8875.html for samples).

That it's working at all with such volumes on CF5 is impressive to many (and I
don't mean that as a slap, but we all know CFMX was designed to address
perceived scalability issues with CF5.)

But MySpace knew that the time would come when CF5 would no longer cut it, and
while they tried CFMX and passed on that, they were considering a move to .NET
(and pure ASP.NET), when they learned of us.

After testing last year showed that their code would not only work but work
better on BD.NET, they bought and started making the move. The site is moving
to BD by subsites (and across hundreds of servers each time). It's a huge site,
and they have lots of ongoing responsibilities (always updating the site to
appeal to their youthful audience) that understandably can get in the way of
that effort.

As for the people, I frankly would never get into a discussion of whether I
thought one company's developers were "decent" or not. "Walk a mile in a man's
shoes first" seems apt. Most of us know that many factors can influence the
quality of code we have to support.

Hey James,

I've had a chance to checkout your CFAJAX examples and have a quick question on
a specific technical issue I was hoping you could answer before I climb on the
AJAX wagon ;-)

THE SCENARIO:
I use this in my data driven select box options:
selected>#recDisplayValue#

THE POSSIBLE ISSUE (although I think it would be fine):
If I was using CFAJAX to change the option values (and displayed values) based
on some user action (like your related select box example), do you forsee any
issues with my code above still running correctly?

I'm just not sure what would happen if I change the option values and displayed
values via JS (your list box II example)how my bit of CF tucked in there
would react.

I'm also fighting a nasty coldso my brain may be playing tricks on
me...this
seems like it should be fine...but making sure ;-)

TIA

I've already done this.

I'm curious as to why you don't like custom tags? To me, and with a
little tweaking, custom tags is a way to add aspects to coldfusion
(albeit in a limited way).

You can configure a _lot_ of stuff via the cfcharts command line

search Tim Buntel's blog, he wrote an entry about it a few months

Re: Cannot get CFMX6 to come back after reboot

2005-12-14 Thread Joe Tseng
I found something that may relate to my current problem... I found the JRun
used for CFMX and I saw these lines:

JRun 4.0 ISAPI Extension 47304 - May 2 2002
initProxy failed to fetch server properties
could not initialize Server_1:127.0.0.1:51010
couldn't initialize from remote server, deferring init till request time

Under IIS//Properties/ISAPI Filters there's an entry for "JRun
Connector Filter", and it's labed as running on high priority. Does my problem
have something to do with that? And is there some way I can restart that
filter?

I think this might point to the fact that IIS has lost its association with
..cfm files.

You can check this in the web site properties under IIS, Home Directory Tab,
click Configuration button in application section.

This should show .cfm, .cfml, .cfc files are all associated with jrun.dll

Hope that helps.

RE: .NET Variables wiithin ColdFusion HELP!!!

2005-12-14 Thread Snake
This is another plug for Blue Dragin I'm afraid.

With Blue Dragon.net you can mix and match CFML and asp.net, and session
variables will be available to both.
I.E session vars create din the .net code are available to CFML and vice
versa.
You can also include asp.net cod einto a .cfm file and vice versa.

Subject: .NET Variables wiithin ColdFusion HELP!!!

We have a project that was poorly planned.

One piece of the project was built by a very experienced CF developer.

Another piece was built by a good programmer fairly new to CF, with the help
of a senior CF developer.

The third piece was built in .NET by a good developer with lots of GUI
experience but no web experience.

The .NET piece is the entry point and both CF pieces point back to the
entry point. So I can log in, work in the .NET piece then move to
either of the CF pieces but almost always end up back in the .NET piece.

The issue we are running into is that the .NET session variables exist in
..NET. There are no problems with them. However, if a user moves from the
..NET piece to either of the CF pieces the .NET Session variables no longer
exist upon return to the .NET piece.

All pieces are within a single website.

Any idea what might be causing this or how to address the issue?

Re: Snippets

Can you beleive that crap? I remember snippets way back in
CF Studio in the previous century. Don't you think they
could have come up with another name or something? Maybe
balmerets or billets or codetts. I've heard storys about
Mirosoft stealing ideas. This takes the cake.

RSS looks ok but not ok

2005-12-14 Thread Matthew Walker
Any ideas why the feed validator would be seeing something different
from what I see (and rejecting the feed)?

Here's the feed:
http://www.tramper.co.nz/tracks/index.cfm?&view=browse&layout=rss

Here's what the validator sees at the end:

 JRun Servlet Error500 Operation
failed on the data source named "tramperconz".
Operation failed on the data source named "tramperconz".

I don't even understand that error -- there's nothing wrong with the
datasource or the feed wouldn't display. Any hints?

RE: .NET Variables within ColdFusion HELP!!!

Current testing is leading to something in the .NET coding. I created a simple
set of pages in ASP.NET (VB) and ColdFusion, each setting session values and
displaying them on following pages. I can bounce between the two application

RE: .NET Variables within ColdFusion HELP!!!

2005-12-14 Thread Ian Skinner
Can you find out if the .NET session is set to be killed once the app gets out
of .NET environment? Looks like the session is killed once you navigate to
different web site or a different section in a web site.

We can determine that the .NET session is not killed, but it may be being
cleared. But when the application returns to the .NET portion the session ID
still exists, but none of the session values do. Strangely if we put the
ColdFusion under a different domain, this problem does not occur. If the .NET
code links to the CF code in the other domain and then the CF code returns to
the .NET code in the original domain the .NET session values are just fine.

Couple of answers to your question.

The .NET portion is more than just an entry point. It contains
additional functionality.

We are doing what we can to continue as a CF house. There has been a
push for .NET by non-IS related management (read all you want between
the lines).

One of the ways we are trying to do this is using both .NET and CF.
Attempting to show that .NET is no better than CF and they can actually
work together. (remember, the "poorly planned project" comment at the
start of the original post).

Better planning and testing would have raised this issue earlier.

We have a project that was poorly planned.

One piece of the project was built by a very experienced CF developer.

Another piece was built by a good programmer fairly new to CF, with the
help of a senior CF developer.

The issue we are running into is that the .NET session variables exist
in .NET. There are no problems with them. However, if a user moves
from the .NET piece to either of the CF pieces the .NET Session
variables no longer exist upon return to the .NET piece.

All pieces are within a single website.

Any idea what might be causing this or how to address the issue?

RE: .NET Variables within ColdFusion HELP!!!

2005-12-14 Thread Ian Skinner
Can you determine if the sessions are simply timing out? It may be as simple
as increasing the IIS session timeout value.

Not unless the default timeout is less then a minute. It happens immediately.
Click on a link from an aspx page to a cfm page, click a link back and suddenly
no .NET session data.

Hi Ken,

Is there a reason that the entry point is in .NET while everything else is
CF? It seems logical that it might be wise to encompass the complete app
within one platform...

Cheers,

Re: Sharepoint

2005-12-14 Thread Aaron Rouse
That is interesting, the first time I tried to install SP it posted an error
at the end about how my IIS had FP Server extensions installed and how it
would not work with them there.

I have been debating of using SP for the quick and dirty for the document
repository needs but probably going to just do this whole thing in CF. I
even have a document repository written for another project and probably
could find others online so it really does not come down to a development
time issue. More of convincing the people who own both products to use the
paid one for it all instead of the free one for some or all.

RE: Sharepoint

2005-12-14 Thread Dawson, Michael
I will say that SP is pretty cool for quick dirty intranets and posting
documents. It really benefits those that are not to be bothered with
using FrontPage or Contribute.

It does have a cool survey system built-in. It's not perfect, but it
keeps us from having to write custom surveys in CF.

However, I do not believe SP to be the portal for our university as it
was told to be. (The previous IT leader was a huge MS fan and SP was
the bee's knees.)

I would prefer to build a custom portal in CF, but if there are parts
that I don't want to
build, such as the surveys, I will leave them for SP.

We are running it on a separate server, so I can't really say if it
commandeers a server from other applications. I do know that FrontPage
server extensions appear to be based off of SP. (You can see this in
the IIS manager for a server that has FP extensions installed.)

powerful tool with a lot of capabilities and is free if you have Windows
2003 but if it is all that then I keep asking myself why can't I seem to
find much more than a small handful of people who know what it is let
alone use it.

This is what I had sent to him and his response was that he knows it
does all of it with the exception of the notifier but bet it could be
done just that he had never had to do it so did not know.

 - Repository for scanned and typed documents as well as a reference to
where the master printed document is stored.
- Security levels set to what group or individual documents can be seen
by what people
- Possibly the searching of document content
- Revision tracking, maybe via different documents but maybe a change
log where people key in the comments in a textarea
- Tracking of who has looked at the documents online as well as who has
pulled up the master location since this implies they pulled the master.
- Email notifiers which could be when a document is about to expire or
could be something else
- All sorts of Forms for things to be key'd in and stored such as when a
product is recieved what type of product it is and how many line items
it has so a form with text inputs and a grid input to allow multiple
line items and being able to relate key'd in information to a document
- Eventually maybe tie into some sort of bar coding system, but I would
imagine this system would be a seperate program with its own tables and
need to be linked in somehow for reporting or searching needs.

Re: Sharepoint

2005-12-14 Thread Aaron Rouse
That is a good question, I have been messing(messing=trying to get it to
install correctly) with Sharepoint some this week and asking around on it.
A few warnings I have recieved on it is that it will essentially take over a
machine because it is such a resource hawg. One of them was:

"but be warned that Sharepoint will often insist on owning that machine,
making other web applications (especially .NET ones) inoperable"

I actually have the need to build a small intranet that amongst its need for
various forms for inputting data and searching on that it also needs a
document repository. Been led to believe that Sharepoint could just do it
all, but been really hesitant to commit to that since been unable to
completely validate it. One of the things it needs though that I know
Sharepoint is good at is a document repository.

Ok guys - rookie move on my part.

Using the conditional "IsDefined" works perfectly in stopping the XML from
parsing when no news results are returned. Here's the complete working code:

#xmlDoc.rss.channel.title.xmlText#
#xmlDoc.rss.channel.link.xmlText#
#xmlDoc.rss.channel.lastBuildDate.xmlText#

#xmlDoc.rss.channel.item[i].title.xmlText#
#xmlDoc.rss.channel.item[i].description.xmlText#

No current news stories matched your search criteria
"#search_term#".

CFC for Image Manipulation

2005-12-14 Thread Adrian Showater
Sorry, I know this thread is a few days old but...

I've done some image manipulateion with CFCs with mixed results. I used the
Alagad Component and loved being able to do native calls in CF for image
manipulation, but I was dissapointed by the final file sizes of the images,
especially in the case of creating Thumbnails. Using Image Magick, a
command line program that I gave a CFC interface to, I was able to get final
image sizes that were at least 1/2 the size of the Alagad images (generally
they were closer to 1/10th the size), and with much better quality (i.e., a
500kb image when resized to 50x50 px in Alagad is 20kb, in Image Magick the
same image is 2-3kb). As such, I only use the Alagad component for
watermarking an image and use Image Magick for everything else. The only
(big) drawback is that the server has to have Image Magick installed as
well, and I have run into some problems there.

Is anyone else familiar with Image Magick, and how does the final image
quality compare to Massimo's CFC? I would consider using his component if
the final quality is at least as good, but my first concern is having the
best final product, not the means to get there.

Incomplete XML causes problems

2005-12-14 Thread Mark Warrick
Hello,

I've written a simple Yahoo RSS XML parser which you can see here:
http://www.warrick.net/yahoo_rss_reader.cfm

If you enter a search term that matches current news, the script works fine.
However, if there are no matching stories, the XML returned is incomplete and
an error is returned stating that some part of the XML that the code references
is missing.

I've tried evaluating the cfhttp.filecontent for the existence of certain
things such as "We did not find results for" which you can see if you click
through on the link this script generates. But the error still occurs. So
what I need is some sort of error checking which will stop the XML from parsing
if no news results are returned. Here's the script so far. Thanks!

Wild, it looks like it's going to custom tags by reference, but UDFs
by value. Here's a test I wrote:

That's good to know, thanks! I was also under the impression that Arrays

Sounds like a bug in the documentation, a leftover from the olden
days. An array in CF is now a java.util.Vector, definately a complex
object! These should be pass-by-reference, aka, sharing a pointer.

I have to say that its sort of funny that you surrounded your cf tags
with [php] but i suppose you probably cross posted this to a forum.

Either way, try something like this :

   AND YEAR(n.due_datetime) = '#FORM.year#'

   AND MONTH(n.due_datetime) = '#FORM.month#'

   AND DAY(n.due_datetime) = '#FORM.year#'

This is not tested, and i cant ever remember the differences in the
database types, but you should have some sort of date type functions
that will pull out the specific year month or day from a date and
compare it. It will slow things down, but not any slower than doing a
LIKE. If it doesnt work, you might need to make sure you are storing
it in the db as a timestamp, not a string.

Are arrays really passed by value? Practice shows otherwise.

2005-12-14 Thread James Reily
CF documentation states the following:

"When you pass a variable to a CFML custom tag as an attribute,
or to a user-defined function as an argument, the following rules
determine whether the custom tag or function receives its own
private copy of the variable or only gets a reference to the
calling page's variable:

* Simple variables and arrays are passed as copies of the data.
If your argument is an expression that contains multiple simple
variables, the result of the expression evaluation is copied to
   the function or tag.
* Structures, queries, and cfobject objects are passed as
   references to the object."

HOWEVER, when I pass an array to a custom tag (.cfm), change its contents in
that tag, and then return to the calling tag, the array in the calling tag
contains the altered value. Is this a bug? Or is the documentation old and you
can now pass arrays by value?

Example:

#VARIABLES.array1[1]#>
#VARIABLES.array1[2]#>

CF & mySQL date search query question

2005-12-14 Thread Andy Matthews
I've got a form which submits 3 fields, year, month and day. In the db, I'm
storing a standard date/time field (-mm-dd hh:mm:ss). The time portion
of this is irrelevant for this form.

What I'd like to accomplish is allowing the user to submit values for one or
more of these fields and search the date column based on the values. So:

year=2006 (return all records with a year of 2006)
year=2005, month=12 (return all records from dec 2005)
month=9, day=21 (return all records on sept 21 of any year.)
day=21 (return all records on the 21st of any month/year)

Admittedly this last example isn't all that useful, but it's possible. So
right now this is what my query looks like:
[php]

AND n.due_datetime LIKE '#FORM.year#-%'

AND n.due_datetime LIKE '%-#FORM.month#-%'

AND n.due_datetime LIKE '%-#FORM.year# %'

[/php]

The problem is that this only allows the user to search against one of the
fields; I need to do any/all. Does anyone have any ideas how I might
accomplish this?

That is what I want to do, show the button only after the "total" button is
clicked, so wouldn't have to do the visbility function pieces in the onclick
function? Here is what I have, should have included the other function. So
when I click SubtotalItem button the OrderTotal button will appear.

Give the button in question a style like...

Style="visibility:hidden;" to hide it

At the end of your 'calculate total' function or onclick of the total button
or wherever you wan it... put

document.myformname.mybuttonname.style.visibility='visible'; to show it

Re: How can I use a .Net DLL with CFMX?

2005-12-14 Thread Joe Rinehart
Hey Charlie,

I didn't mean to infer compatibility issues. I think BD is an
amazingly compatible product; when I've switched to it, I've barely
noticed a difference.

What I was referring to is that if they've already payed a few grand
for their ColdFusion licenses, it may not go so well with their bosses
if they now need to buy BlueDragon as well. That's all, nothing about
the product itself.

RE: How can I use a .Net DLL with CFMX?

2005-12-14 Thread Mark Fuqua
Hey,

I don't know much about Blue Dragon, but I think your frustration is one of
the reasons why they decided to develope a CFML compiler for .NET. I am
sure there are lots of others, but surely close ties with the Windows OS was
one.

were looking for a similar solution, however cannot risk moving to BD (lots
of existing code needing to be re-tested etc)
Is there no neat way of using a dll without resorting to web services ?

Seems the extra overhead of TX/RX in a web service is redundant for using a
piece of code that may be on the same machine.

RE: Javascript question

2005-12-14 Thread Andrew Scott
Very easy actually.

 Function showSubmit(element)
 {
   Element.style.visibility = show;
 }

Another way you could do this is have the button disabled, and then enable
the button once the required action is completed.

Quick qustion, I have a submit button I do not want to show until a user
clicks a button to calculate a total first on the same page. How do I do
this?

  TOTAL:
