You want to say something without actually saying it? Use pseudo code, examples and experiences. I don't think any of the responses to the original poster said that doing this would break anything I don't recall saying otherwise... but the only reason I can think of for absolutley excluding a possible solution is that it would 'break' something... not because it might put an html tag in the 'business logic' of your HTML application. I was merely pointing out that it would not break it. Uh, you know, I thought Silent Bob was ... silent? Just a side note but... Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) talks in every movie he's ever been in It is NOT all preferences and habits. Or at least, it shouldn't be. Why shouldn't it be? Because it's not your preference? there's a body of knowledge that's been built up by the experiences and study of others. Who? Trees, acorns, ill-equipped doctors and well organized refridgerators? In the case of the original poster, I'd probably do the same thing as he's doing. But if I were building the application from scratch, I probably wouldn't. He probably wouldn't either after this little 2400 page adventure. I guess the best 'saying' for Tim and his 2400 pages in this case would be... You can't polish a turd so just use your Application.cfm to fix your problem. Now you know that in the future you'll want to be a little more mindful of an applications growth and scalability no matter how small you THINK its going to 'stay' because things just don't always work out the way we expect them to. Now you have your own experience and study to base your decisions on and don't have to rely on spooning your dentist. If you don't think that's a worthy topic of discussion You have to wait for me to say it before you are allowed to insinuate that I said or thought it. ;-) But he's seen the good and bad side of both and will make his choice as to the best solution for him and his next application... and THAT... is a preference no matter where you let your doctor stick his eating utensils. Of course, I may just be a little bitter since I started reading a 60 post strong thread that started out OK, got weak, then got better and then turned to shit... and just decided I wanted to spruce up the ending a little... maaayb And mybe im just bitter because I have to go on a road trip with Will (Who, incidentally, has went through the spoon procedure with his doctor and now has huge gas problems...) ;-) .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:. Re: SERVER scope in CF Enterprise
Sandboxes don't change the way scopes apply - they only introduce security checking via the java security methods; there remains a single SERVER scope common across all sandboxes. However, multiple instances of CF on the one machine will each have their own SERVER scope, because each instance runs in its own JVM. Best Approach for Survey Question
I am trying to determine the best way to structure a series of survey questions, keeping in mind that I need to make it easy to use for the respondent, easy to code, and easy to tabulate the data later on. I can structure the following typical question as a single set of checkboxes: Q5: Please select schools that provide interns (check all that apply): [ ] Sciences [ ] Management/Business [ ] Law [ ] Communications [ ] Other Using a single datafield for the question, I then would need to parse a comma-delimited list to separated the answers. - or - I can use a series of radio buttons: Q5:Please select schools that provide interns (check all that apply): A. Sciences [ ] B. Management/Business [ ] C. Law [ ] D. Communications [ ] E. Other [ ] If I use a separate data field (5 in this case) for each sub-part of the question, then it is easy to tabulate results for each part. Recommendations appreciated. RE: Best Approach for Survey Question
Not quite sure what your question is... whether or not you should use a comma delimited list of items or a separate record for each? If that is your question most definitely a separate record for each question AND answer Here's a script I use for building the necessary tables for a survey app I did... It can house multiple surveys, multiple questions per survey, and multiple answers per question. At the 'question' level, you define the form field type to use for that particular question. Eg... radio (single answer), checkbox (multiple answers), text, textarea... The backend has everything you'd need... including reports and it all works great with this database schema. There is only one type of answer that I haven't put in it and that is a question with multiple answers but each of those answers would have multiple answers themselves... It would be used for rating each answer to one question. Something like... Rate These Answers: One [bad] [good] [great] Two [bad] [good] [great] Three [bad] [good] [great] Email me offlist if you'd like to see the app and its administrative tools in action. == srv_globals.cfm = cfscript request.surveydsn = surveyapp; request.tblprefix = tbl_survey_; request.debugon = yes; request.imageroot = http://#cgi.server_name#/images;; request.webroot = http://#cgi.server_name#/surveys;; /cfscript === msaccess_tbl_script.cfm == cfinclude template=surveys/srv_globals.cfm cfoutput cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#as ( answerid counter primary key , questionid number , surveyid number , answer text(250) , fieldtype text(50) , sortid number ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#as was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#as already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#qs ( questionid counter primary key , surveyid number , question memo , fieldtype text(50) , sortid number ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#qs was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#qs already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#faqs ( faqid counter primary key , faqquestion memo , faqanswer memo , sortid number ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#faqs was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#faqs already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#results ( resultid counter primary key , submitid number , surveyid number , questionid number , answer memo ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#results was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#results already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#submits ( submitid counter primary key , surveyid number , dateadded datetime , fname text(20) , lname text(20) , address text(150) , address2 text(150) , city text(50) , state text(20) , zip text(15) , comments memo , emailaddr text(150) , contactme number ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#submits was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#submits already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry cftry cfquery datasource=#request.surveydsn# create table #request.tblprefix#surveys ( surveyid counter primary key , surveyname text(250) , activesurvey number , dateadded datetime , confirmation memo ) /cfquery div#request.tblprefix#surveys was created successfully/div cfcatch type=any div style=color:##ff;#request.tblprefix#surveys already exists/div /cfcatch /cftry /cfoutput ..:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:. IIS vs. Apache again...
I'm trying out the CF on Wheels framework, and it's showing real promise. I've got it running perfectly under Apache, but I can't seem to get it to run under IIS. It requires mod_rewrite under apache, and I've tried all the ISAPI plugins I can find for IIS that simulate it, but none come even close. One of the lines in the config file is RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cfc?method=dispatchcf_request=%{REQUEST_URI} [QSA,L] Which basically sets up a 404 handler. I couldn't find similar functionality in any of the MOD_REWRITE clones for IIS. Specifically the !-f part. Now, I tried setting up a 404 handler in IIS, and then pass the url to the dispatch.cfc, and it works ok for GET, but doesn't work for POST. So what happened to IIS being better than or as good as Apache? It can't even handle a simple 404 rewrite. Or is it just me?
