Maybe I'm biased... I do lots of work in my spare time, so it makes
sense to me that the best programmers start by being well informed,
whether they're able to use that information immediately or not. They
may discover variances between 6.1 and 7 that result in coding
practices/habbits which smooth the transition to 7 in the distant
future. May not seem important in the short term given the
environment, but at whatever point in the future you might really
thank yourself. ... Though if you wait around too long, 7 will no
longer be commercially available. The company I just quit was still
using CF5 for a bunch of stuff, which isn't sold anymore. They
upgraded just recently but are still supporting some legacy apps.

You were asking about a cross-platform, generic spreadsheet format, which
CSV is. If you want bolding, borders, coloured cells etc and all that
good stuff i think you're going to need to produce a XLS file.

But the vast majority of people who have spreadsheet software can read excel
files cant they?

Webservice or not webservice?

2006-03-12 Thread Duncan
We are trying to do some integration with Monster and use their
webservice to post jobs and receive feedback from them.

When we add this to the CF7 admin

https://63.112.170.8:8443/bgwBroker

We get this feedback: "Error creating web service. Please ensure that
you have entered a correct Web Service name or URL."

Is this an error caused by the certificate not being valid on this IP?
Or is it to do with the 'webservice' at their end. It doesnt look
like a traditional webservice when you view it in the browser - more
like an XSD. There are no .wsdl extentions.

What other way could we use this webservice?

Thanks in advance all!

Sorry for the complications. Aren't you glad you answered?

I just got an answer, and it's simpler than I thought ;-)
Just ask for a key for "http//localhost" and you'll get one,... and it
works ;-)

Of course, you still also have to ask for a key for the final domain.

Just detect the location the application is running in Application.cfm,
and put the right rigth key in some application.variable, and you're in
business.

Jerry,

I can see that you are using FireFox, just like me.
When I look at the messages I sent you, I see the same thing as you in line.
FireFox just thinks it can show the attachement inline, and the only
thing you see is the code
in between the CF tags, like SQL statements.

But the attachement is there. Just hit Ctrl-U on you message, to see the
"source"
and you will see the whole CF code.

Also look at the bottom of your FF window, there is "Attachments:
import1.cfm"
right click on it and Save as.

Not sure it's worth arguing semantics here...but no, *technically* it's still
illegal. The letter of the law on this is pretty clear. In *practical* terms,
they may be able to get away with it because of the difficulty and expense of
making the case, but it's still illegalnot to mention immoral. It wouldn't
be any different than saying if you committed a crime that couldn't be proven,
than it wasn't really illegal.

maintaining state in multipage form

2006-03-12 Thread Christophe Maso
I've taken over a web application where at one point, the user has a long list
of items to choose from to be compared to one another. Each product has a
checkbox next to it, and after checking off those products the user wants to
see, the user submits the form and views a comparison table.

This would be simple if the form were all on one page, but it's not. Since
there can be potentially be a lot to choose from, the form is codes to display
only 30 or so items at a time. There's hyperlink navigation at the bottom of
the page to go to next/previous page, or to go to page x, in order to see other
items. Clicking on any of these links executes a new request and the previous
page's checkboxes lose their state. So right now the user can only compare
items if they happen to be listed on the same page in the same group of 30.

I need the user to be able to check boxes on any page and jump around to other
pages of the form, checking or unchecking as they want, and have the form
maintain it's overall state for when they finally submit. Any leads on where I
can get some tips on how to do this?

Thanks,
Christophe

RE: OT: Copyright Attorney

2006-03-12 Thread Kevin Aebig
My point exactly. If they've changed it so much that it can't be proven to
be the same under the law, than technically it's not illegal.

Source code and copyright aren't very close friends as the line is blurred
in the sand as to where one authors work ends and another begins...

This is absolutely incorrect. Copyright law protects derivative use of
material as well. The only legal use of copyright material is "fair use"
which has specific guidelines that would need to be met. Of course, if the
changes were so significant that the source code was totally unrecognizable,
it might be hard to make a case that it was derivative. But it definitely is
not legal to do it.

The main issue in cases like this is whether the source code is registered
or not. While registration is not required by law, your legal recourse is
much more limited if you did not register the copyright. It's fairly cheap
so I always make sure to register each major release of my software. It's
also best to set up your purchasing area so customers must agree to your
licensing before purchase so there can be no argument that they know the
terms and understood the code was copyrighted.

It always amazes me the dishonesty of some people out there. I have dealt
with this issue a number of times unfortunately. In the worst case, I
actually had someone email me anonymously to blow the whistle on their
employer...they were selling copies of my software to their customers
without paying for the licenses. These types of people always think they
will get away with it, but invariably, someone realizes what's going on and
reports them.

Good luck. Hopefully this is all a misunderstanding but if not, find a good
intellectual property lawyer in your area. Usually a threatening letter from
a lawyer is enough for most people to do the right thing.

It is a CF file, you have to store it somewhere and open it with your CF
editor.
If you try to read it from your browser, all CF tags are interpreted as
illegal HTML tags
and are ignored.
Use "File - save as" in your browser menu.
You may also "View the source code".

The GEDCOM file is received as an uploaded file.
You can change it for a file read instead.

I am not using the Flash IDE, this is a flash form generated from

I also happened to see on Ben Forta's blog that he mentioned he did the

Re: Reading gedcom files from cfmx7

2006-03-12 Thread Jerry Johnson
Because it is the weekend, and my brain gets let at work. It's safer there.

My gmail account can accept attachments.
My work account I have never tried to accept non-co-worker attachments
(never had the need). I don't know that it can't, but I didn't get
your message there, so was guessing.

I think gmail somehow corrupted your post (the inline SQL), since is
only had a few sql statements (delete, insert), and no code on how to
read a gedcom .ged file.

If you wouldn't mind sending the code direct to my gmail account as an
attachment, I think it would get through Isince I pass code around all
the time this way).

Thanks again for helping.

Re: Flash form popup window

2006-03-12 Thread Steve Milburn
I am not using the Flash IDE, this is a flash form generated from
ColdFusion. The issue is dead at this point, as I have restructured the
page so the popup is not necessary.

I also happened to see on Ben Forta's blog that he mentioned he did the
ISP form on his website in Flex (the page I was referring to as an
example of what I was wanting to accomplish). Perhaps what I'm trying
to do is only possible in Flex.

Thanks for everyone who replied to this thread.

Yeah, it is a very nice feature. In fact, you can install the
developer edition and then later when you buy the server just put in
the serial number and it just removes all of the restrictions.

This is absolutely incorrect. Copyright law protects derivative use of material
as well. The only legal use of copyright material is "fair use" which has
specific guidelines that would need to be met. Of course, if the changes were
so significant that the source code was totally unrecognizable, it might be
hard to make a case that it was derivative. But it definitely is not legal to
do it.

The main issue in cases like this is whether the source code is registered or
not. While registration is not required by law, your legal recourse is much
more limited if you did not register the copyright. It's fairly cheap so I
always make sure to register each major release of my software. It's also best
to set up your purchasing area so customers must agree to your licensing before
purchase so there can be no argument that they know the terms and understood
the code was copyrighted.

It always amazes me the dishonesty of some people out there. I have dealt with
this issue a number of times unfortunately. In the worst case, I actually had
someone email me anonymously to blow the whistle on their employer...they were
selling copies of my software to their customers without paying for the
licenses. These types of people always think they will get away with it, but
invariably, someone realizes what's going on and reports them.

Good luck. Hopefully this is all a misunderstanding but if not, find a good
intellectual property lawyer in your area. Usually a threatening letter from a
lawyer is enough for most people to do the right thing.

I am using it, and it is attached to a domain. We wanted to deploy maps to
250 client websites at the same time. Fortunately, many of those are under

The good news is that they don't limit you to the number of ID's you can
generate, so other than being a huge pain in the butt, it's possible. You
could always look at Yahoo maps, which don't have that restriction, but are

Although, if it was written that long ago, the gedcom format might

Re: Google Map API and CF

2006-03-12 Thread Casey Dougall
yeah, I'm using it but it's still in testing phase.

http://www.saratoga.com/Business-DetailsMaps.cfm/BusinessID/364

The gmap code is from the following tutorial which shows a few
examples of how to use the code.
http://tutorial397.easycfm.com/

I still have some troubles getting this to work in "IE" but i haven't
worked on this since October except to change the code that grabs the
GEO Lat and Long digits... this is in a comment on the end of the
tutorial not sure if it's been updated in the files posted.

Basic run though of what this is doing:
- Look in database and see if their is lat and long
- if not cfhttp maps.google.com with the street address and save the
lat and long in variables
- update the database with those ###'z and continue to display maps.

RE: Copyright Attorney

2006-03-12 Thread Bud
cf_ezcart is trademarked. But they're not using
the name. There is a license with it that says
you can't use the code to build a competing
application and that you have to pay for each
copy you use. Not sure what else you can do.

Copying the features page is annoying at the
worst. Actually reselling the software as your
own seems criminal to me.

I don't want to jump the gun. I'm hoping they've simply lifted my
source code from my features page. But one of them purchased my cart
in '04. That doesn't give me confidence.

It's a pretty cool app that locates former customers so our CSR's can try

May be you can still answer my question: it looks like the use of the
API is binded to the domain
name of your site, but is it possible to test it from your developing
work station from localhost?

THANKS A LOT guys, lots of pointers. I will definitely look at each one and
get back to y'all. I was also looking at DynamicMS2.0/1.0 which is not free.
Once again, thanks for all your tips.

RE: Flex 2 and Ben Forta

2006-03-12 Thread Baz
I definitely don't think limiting features is the way to go. In fact I would
like to see the opposite happen. Right now we have CFStandard and
CFEnterprise, which are 2 totally different products, with different
installs, paths and administration. Adding a CFFree to the mix with more
limitations and idiosyncrasies is just going to make things more confusing.
There should only be one CFServer that has ALL functionality including
gateways. The pricing should perhaps be more granular, such as:

-0$: limited to 3 IPs (like developer edition today)
- 500$: max of 1 instance/sandbox (similar to CF Standard is today)
- 1000$: max of 2-5 instances/sandboxes
- 2000$: max of 5-20 instances/sandboxes
- 3000$: max of 20-50 instances/sandboxes
- 4000$: unlimited instances/sandboxes (like CF Enterprise is today)

At least like this small shops will be more encouraged to implement secure
environments using sandboxes without having to dish out 5K.

Perhaps a free version could be limited to 3 concurrent connections (rather
than 3 IPs) so that small sites who can't pay can get up and running. When
they start to get popular and grow, it will be a no-brainer to dish out 500$
or 1000$ to upgrade, instead of recoding the whole site in PHP to avoid it:

- 0$: limited to 3 concurrent connections

Just some thoughts,
Baz
