OT: Looking for Media Reviewer

2006-03-14 Thread Judith Dinowitz
Fusion Authority is looking for a media reviewer to listen to all of the
podcasts and other media that is being produced on ColdFusion and write them
up. Benefits start with the chance to work with an experienced technical editor
who will be there to help you grow as a writer, the opportunity to expand your
name in the ColdFusion community, and certain unnamed future benefits. (We have
plans...)

what encoding does the db use? how was the data added?

This sounds like a dumb question (even as I'm thinking it) but would posting

UTF8 MX7 and MySql5

2006-03-14 Thread cftalk_list
This is killing me.
I've got MX7 running on Linux with mysql version 5. I'm using the jdbc
connector with "?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF8" as a connection
string. So far ok.

I add data to a record that incluses curly quotes and other stuff, look at the
data in the table and it looks fine. The characters are there.

Now, when I display the data using coldfusion I get "little boxes".

I've tried adding to application
page,
to the actual page and even to
all pages!! Nothing works.

Curiously, all works fine on my development windows CFMX7 and mysql5 setup.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jf

Re: CF 7 upgrade BAD!

2006-03-14 Thread Brian Peddle
Bryan -- We have been experiencing the same issues with CF 7.

We had one machine 6 and one 7 on windows 2000, we moved to all CF 7 on
windows 2003 2gigs ram, dual xeons and experienced a major slow down.

We ran seefusion and noticed first time to byte of many files to be very
high. Upwards of 200+ seconds in some cases. The queries would run in ms
put pages would hang up waiting. We added a third box and it didn't help
too much. We messed with sim. Connections, higher and lower and didn't seem
to matter.

Things are improving, we have redone queries and done some other things code
wise but we still see these sticks every day. The big thing is well it
worked before why doesn't it work now. We had out managed hosting check
everything, lost packets, you name it network wise and nothing is wrong.

Something is different for sure. What I don't know.

RE: Multiple file upload - flash forms?

2006-03-14 Thread Bobby Hartsfield
Wouldn’t you still have to worry about timeouts? I've done multiple file
uploads without java or activeX but I've also always limited the number of
files that can be uploaded at a time rather than setting the timeout to some
ridiculously high number.

This sounds like a dumb question (even as I'm thinking it) but would posting
the data asynchronously through Ajax still timeout? I haven’t written any
uploaders in Ajax yet.

You can have multiple file selects within Flash. Of course you have to
select them all at the same time, so they need to be within the same folder.

What you want to do isn't too difficult as these features are built in to
Flash 8... specifically for this purpose.

I would imagine that you'd have to build it directly in flash. Even
then, I'm not sure you could do a multiple upload with a drag-and-drop
type control. You could do multiple file selects and that sort of thing,
but I don't know that there's a mass file select option in flash. I
could be wrong as I have just brushed the surface of the new file
controls in flash.

I'm working on a photo gallery application and need to provide a user
friendly way of uploading multiple image files.

I would prefer to NOT use an ActiveX or Java widget so a Flash based
solution seems ideal.

Can ColdFusion Flash Forms be used to allow users the ability to select
multiple files at once? Would I need to build this in Flash rather than
Coldfusion? Does anybody have any ideas or inspiration?

There are a couple of instances of functions on cflib.org to handle
that issue of relative paths if you need one. I contributed one called
getRelative() which in retrospect is probably too generic as a
function name (my code now uses getPathTo() instead).

The title of the hotfix pretty much says it all - ColdFusion MX 7.0.1
cumulative hot fix 2, so your version is what it applies to.

> if necessary?

That's a relative question. If you're a nimble, light development team that
doesn't have a large distribution and can check for bugs quickly, then most
often you can apply hotfixes without too much concern.

However, if you work for/manage a team that develops for a complex product
where it would be impossible to determine the impact of a hotfix without
rigorously testing the code, then you only apply if you are experiencing the
exact bug that the hotfix addresses.

RE: How to keep unrelated CFML tags from repeating includes?

2006-03-14 Thread Gaulin, Mark
You could write a custom tag to do the actual cfinclude, and have all of
the rest of your code use it rather that cfinclude'ing directly. Then
the custom tag would be the only one that needed to know about the
request scope. Includes would probably not be able to use relative
paths without some additional work...

I have a site that uses a number of unrelated cfml tags. Often, these
tags need to insert an external javascript file reference into the
page's HTML header. What is a good technique for keeping more than one
tag from inserting the same code? To date I've been setting boolean
variables in the request scope, but that obviously requires all tags to
play nicely together. Is there a way to do it without the tags knowing
anything about one another?

That version number is for the base CFMX 7.0.1 install:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18515

Presumably, applying the hotfix will change this, but it's not listed in the
document above.

However, the hotfix page says:

"The ColdFusion MX 7.0.1 cumulative hot fix JAR file will appear as a new
entry in the System Information list."

So, you'll be able to tell whether it's installed.

If you're experiencing one of those issues, you may find it necessary to
apply the hotfix. If not, I'd just take the vendor's advice.

Maybe another custom tag in conjunction with your request scoped variable?

You call that tag from all your other pages and in keep track of
request.javascriptIncluded in there.

insertJavascipt.cfm Code

... Include the Javascript file here ...

How Updated am I?

2006-03-14 Thread Nathan C. Smith
I just installed a recent download of CF MX7. My version reads:
7,0,1,116466

The hotfix released on 3/2/2006 doesn't indicate on the web page what the
version will be once applied. I'm trying to determine if I need to apply
this or not. Has anyone who has applied it checked their version?

Also, can anyone comment on this:
"Macromedia recommends that CHF2 only be applied to ColdFusion MX 7.0.1 if
you are experiencing one or more of the specific fixed issues listed below,
and then only to ColdFusion MX 7.0.1 (specifically)."

Is that truly the best practice, or should I apply regardless if necessary?

Thanks.

-Nate

How to keep unrelated CFML tags from repeating includes?

2006-03-14 Thread Jim McAtee
I have a site that uses a number of unrelated cfml tags. Often, these
tags need to insert an external javascript file reference into the page's
HTML header. What is a good technique for keeping more than one tag from
inserting the same code? To date I've been setting boolean variables in
the request scope, but that obviously requires all tags to play nicely
together. Is there a way to do it without the tags knowing anything about
one another?

You can also get around this my searching for the key

form["Ship-Name"]

Or even outputting it directly as

Re: Hyphens in form variables not recognized

2006-03-14 Thread Charlie Griefer
you shouldn't need the structFind...

you can try array notation, which lets you get away with certain
things that dot notation does not.

#form['ship-name']#

might be cleaner instead of doing a number of reassignments?

Hyphens in form variables not recognized

2006-03-14 Thread Rick Bierregaard
I needed to receive form variables from Yahoo stores where the form names
contained a hyphen, for example Ship-Name.
I could observe the form values posted using a cfdump, but when I tried to
detect individual form names like form.Ship-Name I got an error message saying
that form.Ship did not exist. It seemed that the hyphen in the name caused it
to interpret it as a subtraction?

To fix the problem, here is a snippet of the the code I used:

..

..

Ship-Name: #F.ShipName#

This works!
I'm posting this for anyone else who has had a similar problem.

I've got a single page built all in CSS that I'm now ready to build out into
a template for my client's website. Viewed in HTML, the site looks perfect

However, the same identical code, when simply changed to a .cfm extension
aligns the website flush left (and some other minor issues) in IE, but NOT
in Firefox.

Let me reiterate that the code is identical, but for the extension. Does
anyone have an idea of what's going on and how I could fix it?

Re: Expression result error

application is a scope in ColdFusion, which is represented as a
structure (complex object).

might want to rename that var (and for good measure, the database column) :)

Threaded chat... what a neat idea. I guess such a concept would require
you to view a list of active conversations, then you could join a
conversation to discuss the topic... or create a new conversation. You
could filter your view to all active conversations or just your
conversation.. but that would require you to join a specific
conversation to say something.

I think the usability of such an app would be horrendous :)

Expression result error

2006-03-14 Thread Orlini, Robert
Why do I get this error when I update?

Expression result cannot be converted to a string. The error occurred while
processing an element with a general identifier of (#application#),

UPDATE networking
SET
application = '#application#',
type = '#type#',
errormessage = '#errormessage#',
problem = '#problem#',
resolution= '#resolution#'
where id = '#id#'

Thanks!

Yeah, good point. SQL*Plus is a good backup, but I don't think I'd ever
get used to using it as my full time development platform. And I did
use it exclusively for a few months in a previous job.

No, I don't think so. When you use Flash Remoting, you don't output anything
directly from CF, I don't think. Your grouping isn't done in the CFQUERY
tag, but within CFOUTPUT, and since there's no CFOUTPUT with Flash Remoting,
you'd have to handle the grouping yourself within your Flash code.

I don't know if I like it, but I do rely on it - you may or may not have GUI
access to a database, but you almost always have access through a
command-line interface.

RE: CF 7 upgrade BAD!

2006-03-14 Thread Dan G. Switzer, II
Bryan,

Have them download and install a trial version of SeeFusion:
http://www.seefusion.com/

(It'll run for the first 2 hours of the server's uptime and then stop
reporting stats until you buy a license. This will be more than enough time
to try to troubleshoot.)

Start monitoring the "Completed Tasks" and look for differences between the
"First Byte" and "Total Time".

The "First Byte" column tells you how long it took to server the very first
byte to the client. Provided you're not using CFFLUSH to push content to the
user, this will essentially tell you how long CF took to process the page.

The "Total Time" gives you the total time of the request--including the time
it took to push the request to the client. Think of this as the "Last Byte."

You can then take the difference between the Total Time and the First Byte
to figure out if you've got latency issues.

>From what you're saying, it looks almost like your bandwidth is getting
throttled. Check to make sure IIS is throttling the bandwidth.

RE: SOLVED: Re: CF 7 upgrade BAD!

2006-03-14 Thread Snake
That is correct Bryan, the JRUNscripts virtual directory should be pointing
there, presuming u only have the one instance of jrun.
As it is a virtual directory it has to point at a folder, it cannot point at
a file. In fact I don't even know how you could point the vdir at
D:\CFusionMX\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1\jrun.dll.

Within IIS, the JRunScripts is pointing to

but Jrun filter in ISAPI filters is pointing to
D:\CFusionMX\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1\jrun.dll.

I guess the connecters don't solve the above eh ;-)

Load the performance monitor in Windows, then add counters. There should be
a ColdFusion entry in the selector list, then you can add the individual
counters (avg page time, avg db time, queued pages, etc). Very handy for
monitoring specific aspects of the CF service.

You should be able to do this with "DayOfMonth()" and "DateAdd()" functions
(using negative values as other's have shown).

Do you know that all CF documentation is available free online at:

http://Livedocs.macromedia.com

I think if you'll scan the date/time functions section you'll be pleasantly
surprised at how complete it is.

I spent my first month with CF 2.0 building date functions for ridiculous
things already covered in the function library. I just don't like to other
making my mistakes. ;^)

The best thing any CF programmer can do is to read at least the name and
description of every tag and function in the language. You'll be amazed at
well it sticks.

Thanks for the reply...I am not sure any of these are the causeit's a
difficult one to try and catch...I know CF is working and running AOK as I
can browse to a test page and get the desired results - it just seems to be
accessing the CFIDE!

This is on a Apache Tomcat 5.5.12 Server, Apache 2.0.55 with mod_jk/1.2.15,
ColdFusion 7.

What is annoying is that I had this all working a few months ago on another
laptop (which has since had a new HD) but now this CFIDE nonsense seems to
be causing no end of grief!

Subject: RE: CFIDE Error

Looks like a classpath issue. You usually get this error when there are
duplicate JAR files on your classpath. In this case, the error is being
thrown from the org.apache.catalina package (which is Tomcat) so check the
following - which is in no way a comprehensive list of what may be causing
it:

1. Your JAVA_HOME points to a separate Tomcat directory than the one you are
running from
2. You have two javax.servlet.jar files on your classpath
3. Do you have another Tomcat installation on your system (or Jboss)?

These are things that I've done in the past when I first started playing
around with Jboss/Tomcat, but again, it may be something completely
unrelated.

RE: Flash form/CFGRID "slushbox"

2006-03-14 Thread Kevin Aebig
What you're looking for is based on events. If you add a function to
onChange of Slushbox 1, than you can check the current dataProvider for
existing selected items to avoid duplicates, and than add it if need be.

To add a "link", you'll have to use a cellRenderer, unless they implemented
it differently than Flash.

RE: Multiple file upload - flash forms?

2006-03-14 Thread Kevin Aebig
You can have multiple file selects within Flash. Of course you have to
select them all at the same time, so they need to be within the same folder.

What you want to do isn't too difficult as these features are built in to
Flash 8... specifically for this purpose.

Cheers,

Kevin

Re: Oracle SQL Developer

2006-03-14 Thread Aaron Rouse
I use quite a bit of the features in my version here which is not the full
blown one that has the DBA stuff. Admitedly I probably do not even use a
1/3rd of all the features the tool has though. I find it extrememely
helpful to use for things like writing custom functions and stored
procedures. Some of the other features are just icing on the cake that
makes it easy to add things like contraints that were left out of the
initial data modeling(use a different tool for that which exports all the
scripts).

Unless I was doing a lot of Oracle work on my own, I'd probably not buy Toad
but I thought there was a slimmed down free version just never had the need
to look into it since work pays for Toad.

There is no way this tool looks anything like SQL Server's tool. The IDE of SQL
Server 2005 also comes with a specific version of Visual Studio for SQL Server
to design reports and to make SSIS(sql server integration services replaces
DTS). It's a good start for Oracle and it will allow them to say they have an
IDE, but it is not competing with Microsoft's IDE. If anything it finally
allows Oracle developers a GUI without having to buy additional tools or use an
open source product not supported by Oracle.

I am going to have to download this tool again. When I got it in beta it
was "ok" but did not leave me with the impression of having near the
abilities of what the tools for MSSQL 2005 give.

I am surprised people are complaining about Toad crashing. I honestly can
not think of a time my Toad has crashed. I have been using it for a few
years now, upgraded to various versions over those years. I am sure it has
crashed before, just has not happened enough that I recognize it in my
thoughts.
