RE: Creating Java String

2006-03-24 Thread S . Isaac Dealey
Ahh... I'd use mid() instead of string.substring() ... it's less
likely to confuse an entry-level cf coder and although BlueDragon
likely implements strings similarly, I'm not certain it does. Same
with railo.ch or any other cfml engine that might come later.

Problem Installing New MX7 Instance

2006-03-24 Thread Rob Wilkerson
Has anyone ever had any trouble installing an MX7 instance in
multi-server configuration? I have a developer machine:
WinXP SP2
CFMX7 Multi-server
IIS 5.1 (if that matters)

The machine is currently running 3 instances of MX7 and 1 instance of
MX6.1 that is deployed as a war file. I'm trying to create a new MX7
instance and I keep getting the following error:

---
There was a problem
Message: The specified Directory attribute \servers\cfusion\SERVER-INF\temp\cfusion-war-tmp\2E85BB04-CF1E-54BF-49FC34E6D9076CCB\cfusion.ear\cfusion.war\CFIDE\scripts
cannot be deleted.
Detail: You may not have permissions to delete this directory. The
exception occurred during a cfdirectory action="delete".
---

I do have permissions (I'm an administrator on the machine) and, as
far as I can tell, the directory isn't locked by any process.
Likewise, I've rebooted and tried the install with virtually nothing
else running.

I don't remember exactly when I created the other instances, but it
was a number of months ago - probably shortly after 7.0 was released.
I've recently upgraded to 7.0.1, but the problem started before then.
Since I don't remember when I did the original install, I can't be
certain of this, but I may have installed SP2 since the original
installs. I've also kept up with the latest patches, of course.

Other than that, I can't think of any non-routine changes to the
machine configuration. Has anyone else seen anything like this? I've
been trying to add this new instance on and off for about the last
month and I'm dead in the water. Any help or direction would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes, I agree about the time. Unfortunately, as a one-man department, time is a
luxury I do not have. This is why I was hoping to get a few bit ‘o wisdom
from cf-talk.
So I’m doing this by seat of my pants. However, after the suggestions here
and review of various CMS websites and blogs of course, I have gotten it
narrowed down to farcry, assetnow and dynaportal.

Re: cflogin and load balancing

2006-03-24 Thread Adam Churvis
If I'm not mistaken, *authorization* (not authentication) can't work across
multiple CF servers -- clustered or not -- because there's no mechanism for
specifying *roles* on any computer other than the one on which CFLOGINUSER was
executed.

It doesn't matter whether you're using cookies or session (with proper session
syndication in place) because the cookie contains only the username, password,
and application name -- no roles. Which is another reason why you want to use
loginStorage="Session", as the cookie is not encrypted (it's only Base64
encoded).

BlueDragon, however, *does* handle all authentication and authorization
properly across servers with the CFLOGIN framework.

I stand corrected again!

I did further testing and the cflogin/cfloginuser code will
automatically login the user on the second server if the user has the
cflogin cookie from the first server.

It looks like using cflogin (set to use cookies) correctly will work
for my setup with mutiple servers not clustered, even if it's not very
secure (since the cookie includes the username/password).

As I said, I do not include the templates but run them as part of the

However, I've found a place in my app where most of them are called, so
I replaced
the address, for instance "userEdit.cfm?id=#id#" by

and common.cfm is a very simple template that includes userEdit.cfm from
the virtual common directory.

But I still have a lot of things to check before all the app works.

I can see the NULL in the database. Datatype is SQL-Server numeric.

but what would be a simple
and convenient way for the common templates to get the application name
it was called from

By calling the template from the application. Viola your done!

If you include any template from a virtual directory it will automatically be
in the application and session scope of the application that included it.

Re: CFIF and null values

I've found that it's a good practice to trim any strings whose length
is being tested - especially when testing for zero-length. You never
know when a space is going to sneak in there and I find random spaces
that I'm not expecting to be a very time consuming thing to debug
because it's never the first (or even the thirty-first) thing I try.

Take it for what it's worth. Maybe I'm just not a quick learner. :-)

CF does return NULL values as empty strings (not "null" strings, since there
are no such things!)

However, if you don't want this to happen, your best bet may be to handle it
in the database. For example, if you're using SQL Server, you can use
functions such as ISNULL or COALESCE to replace NULL values with something
else.

Then use the new variable.

Now something I have not tried is since the Query is actually a

Because I'm not using includes nor cfhttp.
These are plain vanilla CF templates that count on the application.cfm
to set a whole bunch of variables and parameters.
Every set of templates is a sub application. Ie: select a user in the
database, edit him, update him.
They are called in iFrames, by url or by forms.
I could pass the application name in the url, but I'm looking for a more
elegant and safer solution.

Well, the problem is that my modules are not custom tags.
Most of them for instance are called inside an iFrame.
Each module is in the admin directory, and the Application.cfm template
checks for users logged
and
This ../Application.cfm sets the application name, but it is not
reacheable this way anymore.

Hi,

I'm thinking about a solution that will allow me to have several CF sites
sharing some templates in common in some special directory.

Defining a pseudo directory in IIS for every site is not really a problem,
but what would be a simple and convenient way for the common templates to
get the application name it was called from and set the proper application

Any idea ?

Isn't that what custom tag paths and cf server mappings are for?
(asside from cfc discovery) ... when you call the tag it has access to
all the scopes, so if it's executed within an application, whether it
uses application.cfc or the cfapplication tag, it can reference
#application.applicationname# just like any other template. The
mapping in conjunction with cfmodule or cfimport would give you less
ambiguity and thereby decrease the likelyhood of namespace conflicts
with templates in the directory containing the calling template.

RE: Having a common directory shared by several sites

Why not just assign a mapping in each CF app that points to the common
directory? Automatically gets the App and Sess scope when called.

Here is an article I just did on regex java objects in CF.

http://www.burnette.us/blog/index.cfm/2006/3/23/Using-Java-RegEx-in-ColdFusion-App

The results were a little surprising to me. CF Tags did better when processing
a million lines in 265 files but the java objects did better when processing 1
large file (100MB).

Having a common directory shared by several sites

2006-03-24 Thread Claude Schneegans
Hi,

I'm thinking about a solution that will allow me to have several CF
sites sharing some templates in common
in some special directory.

Defining a pseudo directory in IIS for every site is not really a
problem, but what would be a simple
and convenient way for the common templates to get the application name
it was called from
and set the proper application and session variables ?

Any idea ?

I have a question related to this. When you get into a situation where
you have numerous joins in one query, are you better off breaking the
mess into several database Views and simplifying the query? Could you
realize speed gains?

RE: CAPTCHA

2006-03-24 Thread Sandra Clark
Cons:

Captcha's have accessibility problems. Unless you also implement a spoken
system (where the system speaks the letters to be typed), a blind person
cannot use your system.

I ran into the same problem with my comment form on my new blog. I
ultimately decided to go with a blacklist/whitelist system that I worked
out. It does take some personal attention when a new person posts a
comment, but so far no spam.

I check to make sure the IP the form comes from is the same as my site, if
not the user gets blacklisted.

If the form has words that are forbidden, the user gets blacklisted.

If the user is blacklisted, the contents go to the ether.

If the user is not blacklisted, the form gets posted.

If the user is whitelisted, then the comments get sent to subscribers

If the user is not whitelisted or blacklisted, then I get an email with the
form contents and two links, one allowing me to whitelist the user, and one
allowing me to blacklist the user (if the user is blacklisted, the comment
gets deleted). If I whitelist the user, the comments get sent to
subscribers.

I, of course have an interest in accessibility and I need to walk my talk on
my web site. YMMV.

RE: CF7 Standard to CF7 Enterprise Upgrade

2006-03-24 Thread Mike Fleming
That makes sense. My client is mainly looking at the upgrade to take
advantage of the supposed increase and multiple thread runs for cfdocument.
So from what the folks here have mentioned, it sounds as though we can
purchase the Enterprise license, pop the key in and take advantage of that
increased performance. In their off season, I could then go down the
reinstall path to take advantage of the multi server instance features.

Also, for everyone's knowledge, I called Adobe today and asked the pricing.
If you already own a license for CF7 Standard, you can purchase to
Enterprise for $4700 (a discount of $1300 from the full version). If you do
the quick math, basically they subtract the price of the standard edition
from the full enterprise since you already own it. You cannot just buy the
upgrade of Enterprise as you would already need to have a license for a
previous Enterprise version.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, whenever you change your serial number, you get the functionality
allowed by that license. However, a lot of the value of an Enterprise
license is wrapped up in the ability to run a complete JRun install, and you
would need to reinstall CFMX to get that if you upgraded from Standard to
Enterprise.

I tried to see if I could do an update on the column with a cfquery on

So, how does some one go about doing this?

You cannot use UPDATE with query of queries, because there are no actual
tables to be updated. You can, however, SELECT against an existing query,
and do your math in that SELECT.

with. You can also extend some of those scripts to provide additional

If the dbs are on the same server, and the connected user has the
correct rights, you would just need to qualify the table names with
the db names...
SELECT FROM db1.table1 INNER JOIN db2.table2 ON

I believe the above will work for MySQL...in MS-SQL, you will have to
also include the table owner...
SELECT FROM db1.dbo.table1 INNER JOIN db2.dbo.table2 ON
or just
SELECT FROM db1..table1 INNER JOIN db2..table2 ON

I don't think you have to include the table owner in MySQL.

I query a database and receive multiple rows of data. Now I need to do
some conditional math on one of the columns. I would do this in the
initial query but I can't.

I tried to see if I could do an update on the column with a cfquery on
the record set. Sadly, update doesn't work in Query of queries. Grrr

So, how does some one go about doing this?

That's what is being used now. I am not fond of it. It does not play well
with CF. (Which IMHO is funny since it runs on CF) Also, I often have to
clean up the html (not as bad as frontpage tho) and way too much inline CSS

You do know you can control the use of inline CSS, right?

In my experience, the key to success with Contribute is strict control of
the templates, styles, etc that you can impose.

RE: CFLDAP Question ?

2006-03-24 Thread Dawson, Michael
First, make sure your username is a domain account that has access to
view the IT OU in AD. If that doesn't help, then remove the filter and
specify only the cn attribute.

Also, make sure you have specified a domain controller. If you have a
different, working, CFLDAP tag, just use it and change the attributes,
one at a time, until you get it working. It looks right, for me, but
there could be just a small detail that is breaking it.

I'm going to be off-line for about 4-5 hours. If you have any other
problems, I can connect to an AD server later and try something else.

That code should get you the records from AD. Since proxyAddresses is a
multi-value attribute, you will need to handle those accordingly. By
default, they will be comma-separated, if there are more than one value.

The filter says: Any object that is a User AND also has an email
address. You may need to adjust this for your needs.

Then, loop over the ldap query and create your csv file using CFFILE.

There were some recent cf-talk posts on using java to save data to
files, in case your data is very large.

All you *need* to do is pop in the new license key. That will activate
the Ent-level features. You probably won't even need to restart the CF
services, but I would, just because.

However, if you want to use separate instances, you will need to
unistall, then re-install in the multi-instance mode.

Hello all. I currently have CF Standard up and running on a production

purchased the license and popped that on the server. We are thinking of
upgrading the server to CF7 Enterprise (mainly for the perfomance
increase for cfdoucment). Does anyone know if that would require a
total reinstall of CF or if the newly purchased license key could be
popped in and the new Enterprise features would then be enabled. I'm
guessing it would require a new install but I'd just like to know for

If your business rule/model is that you must use CF then you are limited.
If want a best of breed CMS the you really need to look outside of the CF
sphere - this in itself does not mean you have to move away from CF as lots
of the enterprise tools allow you to use any and all technology you have.

Joining two different databases?

2006-03-24 Thread Andy Matthews
I'm building a site for a realtor who will be displaying real estate
listings on their website. Now, my company has an agreement with the local
MLS company that we get a nightly dump of their records so that we can have
a local copy of every listing in the middle Tennessee area.

I am storing just the MLS number in a table for this realtor's website, then
looping over the OTHER database to get the detailed information. I'm fine
with that in most cases but now I'm working on a search function which needs
to able to access both the foreign key MLS number in the realtor database
AND the price and location information stored in the MLS database.

So is it possible to join two totally different tables together somehow?
They are on the same server and both are under my control if that helps.

I'm using mySQL 4.01 on a Linux machine if that's important.

I suspect the answer to this will be no, but I needed to ask anyway.

CFHTTP doesn't parse your CF code. It acts just like a browser - it requests
a URL, and gives you whatever is returned from that URL. If you use CFHTTP
to fetch a CF URL, the CF server will process the request just like if you'd
made it from a browser. So, the short answer is, no, you can't get CFHTTP to
behave the way you want it to.

If you want to be able to fetch the CF code, and you're running both scripts
on the same server, use CFFILE instead of CFHTTP. If the scripts are on
different servers, you're out of luck unless you control both servers - in
that case, you could write one program to read another using CFFILE, then
call that program from the other server using CFHTTP.

CF7 Standard to CF7 Enterprise Upgrade

2006-03-24 Thread Mike Fleming
Hello all. I currently have CF Standard up and running on a production
server. The client downloaded the trial version got it running, then
purchased the license and popped that on the server. We are thinking of
upgrading the server to CF7 Enterprise (mainly for the perfomance increase
for cfdoucment). Does anyone know if that would require a total reinstall
of CF or if the newly purchased license key could be popped in and the new
Enterprise features would then be enabled. I'm guessing it would require a
new install but I'd just like to know for sure before getting back to the
client.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: CF CMS recommendation

2006-03-24 Thread Michael Traher
one of the difficulties in choosing a cms is to get your head round what
your (or your clients) real requirements are.

You really need to play with some to find out if it suits you.

The bad news is that this represents a huge time investment.

My approach was to start with a fairly simple CMS that I could get up and
running quickly and then let this experience focus the requirements list -
maybe hilighting features you need that were not initailly obvious.

It is also pretty bad on the usability side of things. Loads of features

Um, unless I am mistaken, PaperThin isn't for those with a small (or

Hi Mike

Going to use a different approach

What code would I need to dump the following information from Active
Directory (CN, mailnickname, ProxyAddressses) to a .CSV file for all
users in a certain OU?

Any ideas?

Oh. I have missed this - and the FarCry web-site all mentions betas...
The web-site doesn't really mention the requirements for FarCry, btw --
will it run on BD now? Is 6.1 still ok, or is CFMX 7 a requirement?

/H.
