I actually have found that being too friendly with your staff
doesn't work very well. People generally don't want to be
mates with their boss and wont relax with you, and if you do
get too chummy, your authority tends to go out the window.

It totally depends on the boss. Two of my best gaffers would happily go
out on Friday night, pay for most of the drinks, and get blind drunk
with everyone else - and also be prepared to take the drunken flak that
came their way by the end of the night. It requires a thick skin and
two faces to some extent, but it can work really well.

Sometimes staff need to be allowed to vent their frustrations away from
the office - it can be a reward just to do that at times.

DB Server Issues

2006-11-22 Thread James Smith
Some time ago the MySQL Server and CF sat on the same machine. About 8
months ago we moved it onto a separate machine and ever since then we
occasionally get the message...

[Macromedia][SequeLink JDBC Driver][ODBC Socket][MySQL][ODBC 3.51
Driver][mysqld-4.1.21-community-nt]MySQL server has gone away

This normally happens if the MySQL service is restarted however when they
were on the same box this was not a problem. The only way to get it working
again seems to be to restart the CF service.

Is there any way to get around this, would changing from ODBC to JDBC help
here? Is there a way to tell CF It hasn't gone away, look again!.
Anything that we can do automatically so if there are problems at 2AM they
fix themselves is what I need.

Country Name Case

2006-11-22 Thread RichL
Hi Guys

I have a country reference table where all of the country names are
held in upper case.

I want to be able to output in lower case but keep the caps where
appropriate (e.g. UNITED KINGDOM to United Kingdom).

However I think that this going to be close to impossible as there are
values such as:

VIRGIN ISLANDS (BRITISH)
VIRGIN ISLANDS (U.S.)
WALLIS AND FUTANA

So using a function to capitalise the first letter of each word won't
really work.

How have people approached this situation and has anybody found any
good solution?

Also, is there a UDF around for capitalising the first letter of each word?

Thanks in advance

You could do something like this. I did not test it though:

cfset lstCountry =countryFromDB!--- keeps the names in capital
letters ---
cfset replaceCountry =lstCountry!--- here the names will be replaced ---
cfloop list=#lstCountry# index=lst delimeters=. /( !--- Place
all separators in the delimeters ---
cfset sReplaceString = UCase(Left(lst, 1)) LCase(Mid(lst, 2,
Len(lst))
!--- now take the capitalized name and replace the one in the
replacestring ---
cfset replaceCountry = Replace(replaceCountry, lst, sReplaceString,
ONCE)
/cfloop

CFUnit/ANT

Trouble is, we are developing against a shared server - so when I run my Ant
script from my local machine I get an error saying that the build failed
because it can't locate CFUnit. I'm guessing this is because it's on the
shared server.

V:\blah\build.xml:4: taskdef class net.sourceforge.cfunit.ant.CFUnit cannot

Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of the tool?

(I've verified CFUnit is working OK in the normal context)

Why is it everytime I post a problem I solve it two minutes later.

The issue is that CFUnit only appears to work if it's at the top of the

the attribute values from the CFCASE statements).

Here's my code:

cfset guts = rereplacenocase(guts, cfswitch.*?(.*?)/cfswitch, \1) /
cfset guts = rereplacenocase(guts, cfdefaultcase.*?/cfdefaultcase,) /

Re: Initializing Objects in Application.cfm

2006-11-22 Thread Scott Stroz
Aaron,

Functionally, there really is no difference between using the object factory
the way we did and instantiating an object in the application scope as you
are suggesting.

When a variable, or object, is passed 'by reference', it simply means that a
new instance of the variable or object is not created, however a 'pointer'
is used to 'point' to the original variable. Here is a basic code snippet
that might help clarify.

cfset var1 = structNew() /
cfset var1.myName = 'Scott' /
cfset var2 = var1 /
cfset var2.myName = 'Aaron' /

cfoutput#var1.myName#/cfoutput

This code will output 'Aaron'. The reason is that var2 does not actually
contain a structure, rather just a 'pointer' to var1.

In the objectFactory we used, when an object was 'registered' it was put
into a structure. When we call the create() method on the objectFactory it
checks to see if the object is supposed to be a singleton and if it is
already stored in the structure. If it is, it merely returns a pointer to
the object. As I said, while the code looks as if we are actually creating
a new object on each page where a gateway is needed, it is only created if
it doesn't exist or if you manually reinit the application.

In a future presentation we will cover design patterns. In some design
patterns it would be more advantageous to use a factory like we did as
opposed to instantiating an object in the application scope.

Hope this helps.

On 11/21/06, Aaron Roberson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I had a hard time understanding passing by reference and by value in
my Java class... I did download the code from Phill's blog and I
couldn't figure out why you guys kept using the create method of the
objectFactory on each page... now I get it.

However, in this thread I am asking a much more basic question. Why
not just create the objects in Application.cfm and ditch the whole
objectFactory thing? It seems like it would be a whole lot easier to
just instantiate a gateway object in Application.cfm then it is to
register and then create each object using the objectFactory.

What am I missing? There always seems to be a good reason to make
things harder when using OOP, so there has to be something too it,
 right?

 Thanks,
 Aaron

the object factory. Since the gateway objects were specified as a
'singleton', only one instance of the objects will ever be in
 memory. In
the application files, when we once again called the create() method of
 the
object factory, it merely returned a reference to the object already
 cached
in the application scope (Remember, complex data types, including
 objects,
  are passed by reference).

So while the code on the some of the files may seem like new objects are
being created each time a page is hit, a look at the code in
 application.cfm,
and in objectFactory.cfc will show that the only time a new gateway
 object
is created is when one does not already exist, or if you manually reinit
 the
applciation by adding ?reinit=true to the end of a URL.

application scope in Application.cfm? It seems like it would be better

   In Application.cfm I would have:

   cfset application.personGateway =
   createObject(component,path.personGateway).init(application.dsn)
   /

Then on the pages I would just do something like:

   cfset getPeople = application.personGateway /

What do you think, am I off somewhere with all of this OOP stuff?

Identifying date/time objects

2006-11-22 Thread Charles Sheehan-MIles
I have a page which allows the user to select a custom query and download a
CSV. The relevant code is:

cfsetting enablecfoutputonly=yes

CFHEADER NAME=Content-Disposition VALUE=attachment;
filename=#session.MM_Username##LSTimeFormat(Now(),'hhmmmss')#.csv

CFCONTENT TYPE=application/excel

cfoutput#fieldlist##chr(13)#/cfoutput

cfoutput query=rsList

cfloop index=thisfield list=#fieldlist#

   cfset newfield=#rereplace(evaluate(#thisfield#),
#chr(13)##chr(10)#, #chr(10)#, all)##trim(rereplace(#newfield#,
,, , all))#,

/cfloop#CHR(13)#

/cfoutput

I want to be able to figure out if #thisfield# is a SQL date/time object so
I can output it as mm/dd/ instead of
2006-02-11 00:00:00.0

For some reason some of my users get this and excel interprets the date
field as 00:00:00.0 instead of the date, unless you go in and manually
change the format.

Any ideas?

Re: Identifying date/time objects

2006-11-22 Thread RichL
Will,

It looks like isDate() will do what you need - to see if the string
can be converted to a date

You might want to look at parseDateTime() which will create a date
object from the date string.. may or may not be of any use

cfset test = 2006-02-11 00:00:00.0

cfoutput#parseDateTime(test)# | #isDate(test)# |
#dateformat(parseDateTime(test), dd/mmm/)#/cfoutput

Wrong error message under CF5

2006-11-22 Thread Claude Schneegans
Hi,

I have an application on a CF5 server which traps and logs errors with
some CFERROR template.
I have noticed that when an error occurs in a template which has some
function definition in a CFSCRIPT tag, say myFunction (), whatever the
error is,
even a syntax error, the error message is always the same:
The function myFunction has been defined twice.
Like if the template was recompiled a second time.

This is really a PITA, because I have no mean to know what the error
could really be.

Has anyone found a cure for that?

The only thing changed is the second replace. The only other thing I can
think of that you might run into is having more than one cfswitch block in
the template.

I'm sure there is a much better way. It can most likely be done with 1 regex
but I'll have to try that later :-/

Thanks Bobby,

I tried that and it didn't do quite what I was hoping. It did parse
out the values from the cfcase statements, but it also left all of the
other code from the CF template (i.e. all I wanted left at the end was
the attribute values from the CFCASE statements).

Here's my code:

cffile action=READ file=#CGI.CF_TEMPLATE_PATH# variable=guts
cfset guts = rereplacenocase(guts, 'cfcase
value=(.*?).*?/cfcase',\1, all) /
cfset guts = rereplacenocase(guts, cfswitch.*?(.*?)/cfswitch, \1)
/
cfset guts = rereplacenocase(guts, cfdefaultcase.*?/cfdefaultcase,)
/

Thanks again for the help,

Pete

Are you sure you don't have the function defined twice? That's an easy
enough mistake to make. Perhaps you're CFINCLUDEing a function library
twice, or you're defining the function in a custom tag that is invoked with
opening and closing tags?

You are getting the error because of the name=keg...cfhttp is trying
to put the results into a query named keg, and I believe that by default
it tries to use the first line as column names...if they are not valid,
it throws this error. Just take that attribute out of your cfhttp.

Scott,

-Aaron

On 11/22/06, Scott Stroz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Here is a basic code snippet
 that might help clarify.

 cfset var1 = structNew() /
 cfset var1.myName = 'Scott' /
 cfset var2 = var1 /
 cfset var2.myName = 'Aaron' /

 cfoutput#var1.myName#/cfoutput

RE: How can I make this query run correctly?

2006-11-22 Thread Rick Faircloth
Thanks, Tom...the use of between may solve one problem I had
with the actual working of the app, which was when the user
would ask for birthdates on or between two dates (month and day)
that spanned a month, no results would be returned.

However, wouldn't between only dates actually between two
specified dates (month and day), excluding the specified dates
themselves.

E.g. Need birthdates fall on or between Nov 27 and Dec 3.

Using = and = provides me with birthdates on Nov 27 and Dec 3, also.

Would between exclude Nov 27 and Dec 3?

Rick

PS - And this was a query run into a query editor directly
on an MySQL DB, not involving CF...just needed to extract some
info, since my client can't access the web app for some reason
online...

RE: How can I make this query run correctly?

2006-11-22 Thread Rick Faircloth
This question was originally asked to solve a problem when I
directly queried a MySQL database...however, the query is built
into a web app for one of my customer that doesn't work properly.

The user is sending out birthday cards to clients and needs to know
what clients have birthdates between, say Nov 27th and Dec 3rd, no
matter what the year.

So, I have 4 form fields...

(1) Select Earliest Birth Day
(2) Select Earliest Birth Month
(3) Select Latest Birth Date
(4) Select Latest Birth Month

From this information, I query that database using this SQL...

where
   and Month(Client.Client_Birthdate) = #Form.Earliest_Birthdate_Day#
   and Day(Client.Client_Birthdate) = #Form.Earliest_Birthdate_Month#
   and Month(Client.Client_Birthdate) = #Form.Latest_Birthdate_Date#
   and Day(Client.Client_Birthdate) = #Form.Latest_Birthdate_Month#

Here's the problem...

If the requested earliest and latest dates fall within the same month,
everything
run well...but, if two months are spanned, no results are returned.

Why?

Rick

Even cfoop.org is all wrong. Creating a Class in ColdFusion

That's more about creating components in CF. The class object in coldfusion
is the most powerful object because
it can create almost any object just like createObject() via forName(),
reflection for object inspection (think cfdump) , rule breaking (more
reflection stuff) and decompiling via my JODE example.

Re: CFQUERYPARAM stripping characters..why?

2006-11-22 Thread Cameron Johnson
I'm not sure of the specifics, but to troubleshoot, I'd test it by removing the
CFQUERYPARAM and doing the insert.

If it is still stripping the characters, it's not CFQUERYPARAM. It's either the
form or the DB.

Hope that helps, at least a little bit.

Cameron

 I have this code...

 insert into tblRaters
 (mgrEmail, raterComments)
 values
 (cfqueryparam cfsqltype=cf_sql_varchar value=#arguments.
 mgremail#,
 cfqueryparam cfsqltype=cf_sql_varchar value=#arguments.
 ratingComments#
 )

When someone inputs into the ratingComments variable, extraneous
characters like, (+ sign), the character gets stripped. So a Comment
like, he's A+++ is written to the db like he's A.

Can someone tell me a way around this?

 thanks!
Chris

A lot of time it seems random, but digging further reveals a sensible reason
for dropped sessions.

What sort of other symptoms do you see when it happens? Who is it happening

People can have cookies blocked on their LAN for example.

Did the DNS change recently? It could be cached for them or their ISP could
be blocking IP's. I have had a few times where the client domain was
hosted with their ISP. They moved the domain to our servers and we took
control of DNS. Everyone could see it but them. Their ISP wouldn't remove
the DNS record and thus anyone who used the ISP's DNS got the wrong info.
Major pain.

Oh, and it works just fine for me. I would have them try to get to your
server via IP some how and confirm if it is network or DNS related.

 Hi, all.

I've got a client who cannot access any sites from my webserver. They
have one business website and one web app and cannot access either.

However, they can access anything else on the web.

Others can access the site, but they can't .

Just checking on access in various places.

If you would, see if you can bring up www.huntdsp.com. If I can get them
access to this, their business website, then they probably will be able to
 access their web app.

 Thanks,

 Rick

Rick, it works fine for me too. However, the images on the RHS are
ridiculously slow to load for their size on the page. Are you resizing them
via javascript? It looks like they are actually coming into the page at
around 1300 X 1000 pixels!

Anyways, just FYI. The site popped right up, no delays or anything.

I'm in New Hampsha.

I can access it. Is the domain new? The name servers may not have
propagated. They could be on a LAN with a cashed copy of DNS, or they
could have an errant host file entry...

2006-11-22 Thread Dan Plesse
My core complaint is that cfoop is using java terms while not using java.
Then I listed the power features of java within a single class (the class
object) and thus coldfusion gains without any outside help etc 1. compile
classes 2. use of reflection 3. decomplie classes. These are the valuable
inputs I provided but have been disgarded in favor of a blank space.

RE: Need a favor...quick check to see if anyone can access this site...

2006-11-22 Thread Rick Faircloth
I would have them try to get to your
server via IP some how and confirm if it is network or DNS related.

I thought about trying that, but I host multiple sites via host headers
and the site folders are outside the root folder, so I'm not sure how to
access the sites via IP anymore. I used to do that when I had all the
sites under the webroot folder.

How is that done when site folder are outside the root or even on another
drive (as in this case?)

2006-11-22 Thread Josh Nathanson
Hey Rick,

This site is tremendously helpful in checking out dns issues:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/

I only saw one ISP that had your domain cached, it was UUNet, and the ip
they have cached is
66.79.46.138
So if by some weird coincidence they are on UUNet, and you have a new ip for
the domain, this could explain the issue.
