RE: Stop View Source
If by source, you mean HTML and JavaScript the short answer is no. There are things you can do (JS encryption, disable right click, etc.) but ultimately none of those are CF-related. Since you cannot control the client (browser) there is no surefire way to stop anyone. Well, I guess one way would be to re-write your site using Flex. I was somewhat kidding. I don't (at this point) want to give up coding. I don't want to manage people I don't want to worry about other people's paychecks I actually don't want to worry about mine. Re: Stop View Source
I remember reading something that said in ColdFusion we can stop people from viewing the page source code. This quote could be referring to our actual CF code. In that case, no one can read your CF code without direct access to your server. By the time it gets to the end user, it's pure HTML If thats what he meant. Otherwise I agree with everyone else, trying to protect your JS and HTML is a total waste of time. Keep in mind, you are literally sending these files to people who visit your website. When they go to it, your server intentionally sends them copies of your JS and HTML and it gets stored on the users computer. =] -- Alan Rother Adobe Certified Advanced ColdFusion MX 7 Developer Manager, Phoenix Cold Fusion User Group, AZCFUG.org ~| Check out the new features and enhancements in the latest product release - download the What's New PDF now http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/coldfusion/cf8_beta_whatsnew_052907.pdf Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:291593 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4

I am looking for the best technology to take some of my old web pages that basically do CRUD on database tables and updating them to have a better interface. RE: 2007 Web Design Survey
From the point of view of the small business sector and for-hire consulting and design groups, I could see how someone might see cold fusion and web design work as code monkey tasks. But, in your larger, more established IT departments, there are jobs you can only hold with a dozen years of design experience and the ability to work in/with large teams. For that matter, there are analyst and architect level positions which allow companies to recognize the the value of an experienced eye on a problem. Management is an entirely different job requiring minimal technical expertise if you have the intelligence to hire and trust in the strengths of the team you build. Unfortuantely, former techies tend to become poor managers for the very reason that they know too much about the task at hand and often step in to micromanage a solution. I don't think it should come as a surprize that a good number of technical people lack the interpersonal skills and patience for politics it takes to succeed in management. Moreover, many of these same people know this about themselves and choose not to have direct reports. In the end, what we all really do is provide solutions to problems. Young developers tend to live on the bleeding edge of technology solving every problem with an untested, new approach. That's what I'd call a code monkey. Re: SOT: Best technology
Nah, you can use spry for the ajax side of things, but the component stuff, like the data grid, are best left to others, like the Ext library. You use Ext to make your editable grid (exactly like the CF8 html cfgrid), and use Ext's Ajax functionality for the create, update, delete of your records, or utilize another library altogether (like JQuery, or Spry, or whatever). Display is one end of it, the data manipulation the other. Ext can do both, or you can do a mashup, whichever works easiest and best for you. we will look into JS encryption I remember having developed an (almost) perfect way to hide Javascript code from a page. The idea was to encrypt it, send it encrypted as a string to a Java applet. I'm pretty sure it's irrelevant. You can use Firebug to look at the JavaScript that the browser is executing after the applet decrypts it. Thanks for the information Steve. I have not seen examples of data grid like activity on Spry so that is why I thought maybe Spry might not work. I deserve any tongue lashings i get for this huge oversight. Yes we have plans to port to MySQL and PostgreSQL in the future, BUT we don't have a hard time line for when this will happen. boomsocket is actually a heavily modified version of another CMS Digital Positions used to have called i3SiteTools. We spent a few months stripping out all the paid software, re-skinning the interface and adding new features and other stuff for the open source initiative. boomsocket is based on CMS code which began development over 7 years ago and was built for our Microsoft based clients. I'm dying to get it ported to MySQL and PostgreSQL personally and i know it's something others in the company want to do as well. The two primary constraints keeping us from moving forward today are simply time -- we are a production shop and have to deliver client billable work to keep the lights on, and internal expertise in other data systems outside of MS SQL. Based on the architecture of boomsocket and the existing MS SQL DB a conversion shouldn't be a hard thing but it's not going to be something we could do over night. Currently we only employ a handful of stored procedures and that's about it for MSSQL specific code. Most everything else is simple tables, views, etc. One of the reasons I include the .sql script is in hopes that a brilliant and talented MySQL / PostgreSQL developer who knows MS SQL will look at that and say. geez this is so easy, I'll do it. Heck he/she doesn't even have to be brilliant or very talented just dedicated to the cause. As for the suggestions to use some ORM that too would be awesome, but again with a CMS which is based on 7 years of development it's a major change for us to move to an ORM. I've looked personally but I'm only one man on the team and tend to be the go to guy for DB ad back end stuff. So again i have to ask for help from the community. We are primarily a windows shop (duh, it's pretty obvious at this point). We know many of you aren't and we know we live in a bubble right now. We are trying to change this for many reasons, with the open source initiative being one of those driving forces. We believe that the problems boomsocket solves and the efficiencies gained in using it to develop web properties make it worth your attention otherwise we would not bother putting it out there. Please give it a closer look --- get excited, give us more feedback and help us make it better, faster and supported on more platforms. In Access reports, this is done by coding a combination of a Mod function and alternating the background color of the row. But, I am at a loss for how to do it in CF Report Builder. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it. Do most Coldfusion developers use the Report Builder for reports or do they use Crystal Reports or other 3rd party toold? Thank You, Becky Becky, I had this same problem. The answer was to put the concatenation inside the field. What I mean is just put the field on the report. Then double-click it to bring up the expression editor (I think that's what it's called). In there you can put; Trim(query.AreaFull) Area !--- notice the leading space --- Then when report builder renders the report, the whole field comes out right. Hope that helps. Re: 2007 Web Design Survey
I happen to know some damn good programmers in their 40's and 50's who are VERY content just being a code monkey.
