Re: Coldfusion 8 on Ubuntu 8 but error loading admin

2008-09-14 Thread Mark Mandel
I'm on Ubuntu to.

I'm actually having some stability issues with my Intel AGN wireless
card (my fault for going bleeding edge), but I can't see myself
quitting Ubuntu because the UI and workspace enhancements I absolutely
ADORE.

Even little things like being able to set any window to 'be on top',
as a core part of the UI is awesome.

I'll probably be moving to Ibex in the next few days when Alpha6 comes out.

So as I read it, that's it. Speed, Stability and Control.

Right now, my XP box is pretty damm fast. :) I've never had a problem
with stability. Control though.. That interests me..

Is there any virtural machines that you know of that I can install
something like this to check it out? Right now, none of the 3 interests
me enough to start messing with dual boot. :)

For me, as a serious developer, it's simply the best.

I was on a Linux Mint box before my current one (MacBook Pro), and an
XP box before that (mostly).

Mint was hands down the fastest and most stable.

Awesomely, the rocket controls are still there, under the GUI veneer,
so it was the most configurable too.

Speed. Stability. Control.

It's a *real* operating system. The MacBook is fine, but not up to
Mint. XP is at the bottom.

They're all dandy, but give me a Linux machine with VMWare for windows
(if you even need it), any day of the week.

Heh. That's what I'd done for a while for a few years... just sorta
checking the distros out every now and again. They have all been
steadily improving, but Mint (a flavor of Ubuntu) blew me away.

Didn't detect any sarcasm, but I've sorta got ESP, so no surprise
there. Thanks for the heads up for those less connected to the
universe. Heh. :-)

Sadly, you no longer need to be a rocket pilot to fly linux these
days. They've made it more like a rocket-car, than a straight-up
rocket.

Heh. You can get really anal too:

loopedqueryname.columnname[loopedqueryname.currentrow]

There's no way you'd get the wrong thing then. Course, that's overkill.

I can't remember why, but sometimes, when you use
loopedqueryname.columnname, it only uses the first value, and doesn't
iterate through the recordset.

heh.

Re: CFFORM and JS Script Source

2008-09-14 Thread denstar
Hey Les,

Hmmm... not the most elegant solution, but...

Sounds like you're doing multiple requests, right? So even if you
stuck the scripts in the request scope, you'd have multiple copies.
(At first I was going to say, use a custom scriptSrc for the cfform,
and point it at a CF file that only spits out the JS once per
request-- for all I know, that's what CF does anyways).

So, dunno if it's the most elegant solution, but you could set the
scriptSrc for your cfforms to a "blank" url. Just an empty page.

For all but one of the cfforms! Vwalla!

Or, have them all be blank, and read in the JS at the "top" of your page.

That's about all I can figure.

RE: ColdFusion DSN Security

Without sandboxing, this can actually be worse than having the DSN available
to anyone on the server (not saying this is true in all cases, but a
possibility). Now not only can anyone else on the server still access your
data, they would have access to your credentials.

If the host hasn't enabled sandboxing, chances are anyone on the server can
use CFDIRECTORY and CFFILE to just crawl through the server and make copies
of everyone's code which would now include your database username and
password, so the DSN security is really the least of your concerns in this
situation.

Wow... You got sick of windows, so you went to Linux? *shutters*

That's like saying you got sick of your car, so you traded it in for a
rocket. :) More powerful, but the controls and setup *shutters again*

Anyway, it's not a windows or linux issue. You need to config your
apache config file with the location of the CF hook.

Coldfusion 8 on Ubuntu 8 but error loading admin

2008-09-14 Thread Doug Brown
Hi all, I have installed CF8.01 on Ubuntu 8.04 with mySql and Apache2 but
cannot seem to figure out why I cannot get the administrator page to come up
to continue the configuration. The error I get is below. I used all the
defaults and created a /etc/htdocs folder which was the folder that CF
wanted to place the Administration files into. Any ideas?

Failed to Connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
http://127.0.0.1:8300/CFIDE/Administrator/index.cfm

Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a
connection.

* Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network
connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?
Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
