A "slice" is not a consistent unit of measurement. Would you rather
have half of an 8" pizza, or an eighth of a 12" pizza? They're both
slices.

If I were a hosting provider, I'd be able to put more customers on a
bigger machine than a smaller one.

Dear Anon ymous,

If you put ANYTHING of consequence on a VPS for $25-35/mo. you have simply
gotten what you paid for.

You get what you pay for. Especially with hosting. If you put mission
critical apps on an economy VPS or Dedicated provider with out fail over you
only have yourself to blame.

Your options with engineering:
Good
Cheap
Fast

Your options with hosting:
Support
price
features

In either case: Pick 2

Sorry... but complaining about support for a super cheap hosting plan is
like complaining about water being wet.

If you want a VPS or Dedicated server that NEEDS to be five nines? Be
prepared to pay for it.

In the same breath... I have had my blog, other sites, and staging server on
KAVPS with no noticeable down time or emails relating to such (as in none)
for nearly a year.

I was in the hosting biz for years so I take issue with Annon pot shots.

Just saying

Re: Anybody have exerience with KickAssVPS.com?

2009-03-16 Thread Dan Crouch

I ended up getting a dedicated server from CFDynamics, the $189 a month
dedicated package. CF was included in the price as was a shared SQL server.
While it isn't a particulary fast machine (not a quad core p4), since I have it
all to myself, it runs like a champ. I have had it running for 2 years now
without a single issue. It functions as the web server, mail server, and ftp
server and since the CF and SQL are included in the price, it was the perfect
match for me.

While I dont have a VPS with HMS, we do have a couple dedicated VM machines
there as well. The setup took longer than we were anticipating but support has
been very good when needed. And for these servers, we moved from a CF7/SQL 2000
environment to a CF8/SQL 2005 environment and the performance improvement with
that on the new HMS hardware was amazing.

Sessions in FB 5.5.x

2009-03-16 Thread Joe Tseng

I've been trying to make my app establish a user session. I put my user
validation code in my controller's prefuseaction:

select role from v_users where oprid = '#theusername#' and
isInactive is null;

That doesn't seem to work - when I do a debug cfoutput in my welcome view:

#GetAuthUser()# / #len(session.username)#

I get a username for my first value but a zero for my 2nd. Ideas?

Re: SQL Syntax error

2009-03-16 Thread Donnie Carvajal

COUNT(DISTINCT [fieldName] is very important to remember when using JOINS. For
example, if you have the query...

SELECT COUNT(A.code) AS total
FROM TableA A INNER JOIN TableB ON A.code = B.code

And you wanted to know how many records in TableA have records in TableB.

If this query returns 10 records, there may only be 3 DISTINCT records returned
from TableA. If you use COUNT(A.code) as written above, the result will be 10.
If you change it to COUNT(DISTINCT A.code), you will get your desired answer
of 3.

Thanks. I found it finally.

The right syntax (for this issue) is select count(distinct prodcode) as prodcnt

There was a second issue with computed_field_1 the was being bounced
by the ODBC driver as well.

This is invalid:

distinct(count prodcode)

Are you trying to do a DISTINCT on the aggregate function COUNT()?

Not sure that would work, but it would have to be DISTINCT COUNT(prodcode)
if that's what you're after.

[JavaScript] Getting Parent

2009-03-16 Thread Duane Boudreau

Hi All,

I have a page that loads a modal popup using ShowModalDialog. To get around
issues with submitting data inside a modal dialog, I have an iframe to
handle posts within in the modal dialog.

The popup gets triggered two minutes before the session is about to timeout.
They assume that if you don't click the ok button in the popup within 2
minutes you have walked away from your station and want to log you out. To
handle this the popup starts a two minute count down and if timer reaches 0
then the page calls itself to kill the session (since the act of loading the
popup resets the session timer) and needs to redirect the parent page to the
login page.

The redirect is where I am having a problem. I have tried
window.opener.location.href, top.location.href, top.parent.location.href,
and parent.window.location.href.

Can someone point me in the correct direction?

Thanks,

Duane

RE: Anybody have exerience with KickAssVPS.com?

2009-03-16 Thread Rick Faircloth

Virtually every site I have running on it does image creation/
manipulation. Upload, rename, resize, create multiple sizes, etc.

I'm doing all that with cffile and cfimage.

Speed seems fine. I haven't done any actual speed tests to compare.
Speed for me is not much of an issue, since virtually all of
my image handling is done in my clients' site managers, where
speed is not as critical as in the user interface.

Can you explain, Dave?

It makes sense to me that a VPS would only be getting
a part of the processing potential of whatever processor
it's running on...is the quad-core different? Could I be
getting an entire "core" to myself of the "quad"?

Or is it not necessarily true that a slice of a quad core
beats a slice of a Pentium 4?

What part are your referring to?

Check out the SQL PATINDEX function. In combination with SUBSTRING and

ORDER BY that column.

Subject: Sort database records as a human not a computer.

With SQLServer (2000 I believe) if that matters, which it may well.

I have a data column that contains titles. I desire the titles to be
sorted alphabetically as a human would not a computer. The records I'm
currently concerned with start with a quote (") and need to start with a
quote. Ideally I would like the records sorted with these records
placed in order by the first letter inside the quotes like a human
librarian would not to the top of the list as a computer does it. Since
I'm wishing for this, it would be really cool if the sort also ignored
the other human librarian no goes 'a', 'an' and 'the' that are supposed
to be ignored at the beginning of titles when sorting.

Luckily this is a very minor requirement and can be ignored if there is
not is not a simple solution out there, but I also can't believe I am
the first programmer that needed to do this with database data, so maybe
the functionality already exists.

TIA
Ian

Sorry for the long post but I've been working on this for a few days
and have got nowhere
I'm working with flex and cf and I have a bean.. it looks okay but
just testing it with an init() function is giving me an error
The argument HEADLINE_ID passed to function init() is not of type
numeric

I'm not passing headline_id to the init() function...
the code in the .cfm is simple it's just a createobject call to the
cfc..

and here's the bean... there's another bean in another directory set
up almost exactly the same way and I can init that bean with no error.

variables.instance = StructNew();
variables.instance.headline_id = 0;
variables.instance.headline = "";
variables.instance.actiondate = "";
variables.instance.effdate = "";
variables.instance.endeffdate = "";
variables.instance.actionuser = "";

Any Denver/Boulder events??

2009-03-16 Thread Richard Dillman

I and the wife have some family obligations in Denver Co from March 23rd
Through
April 4nd. That being said we should have lots of free time in the
evening/weekend and are hoping to hop into some conferences, seminars, classes
or
even a meet-up group or two. I am big into ColdFusion, CSS, SEO, OOP…; she
is
more into growing the business and making some forays into web design so we run

I’ve been googling but most events are either upcoming or will have just
passed,
so please if you know of any event during that time in the Denver/Boulder area
we
would love to hear about it!

Re: Sort database records as a human not a computer.

2009-03-16 Thread Jason Fisher

I would agree with Brian and Claude on adding the column for sorting. It
would be easy enough to adjust your INSERT / UPDATE calls to auto-create
the sort version, like this:

UPDATE ...
SET title = ,
 sortTitle =
WHERE ID = ...

I'm with Claude on this one, your best bet it probably to generate another
column such as sortTitle that you can then sort on.

RE: Anybody have exerience with KickAssVPS.com?

2009-03-16 Thread Rick Faircloth

I've kinda lost track of who I'm responding to...did you just
reply to this to get the topic back in the loop, Mike? I didn't
see any comments by you below. I assume that means you're just
re-asking the question does anyone have any experience with KickAssVPS.com.

If so, I've had about 9 months experience with them now and not a
single problem at all...not billing issues, no server downtime (that
wasn't announced...and a good thing is that when a planned upgrade
didn't go smoothly, instead of continuing to keep the system down while
they tried to work out the issue, the downgraded and got the system back
up immediately), no server problems at all. Nice support staff. Worked
with me to get a special configuration of services I wanted included and
some I didn't want taken out of the configuration...and adjust the price
accordingly to make it a good deal.

Check out their offerings and don't hesitate to request changes to the
"stock" configurations. Also, they were running a 2GB Mem special for the
price of one when I got my server, which helps. But I've never had any
slow server issues. And except for initial software setup and
configuration,
I've never even had to reboot the server! Smooth as silk.

Can't recommend them highly enough! I have no vested interest, just a very
satisfied customer. I tried at least two other companies before trying
KickAssVPS.com and have never looked back.

As far as I remember, with remoting into the server:

- Win 2003 Server
- Running MySQL 5
- ColdFusion 8
- Plesk was part of the pack, but I don't allow customer access to the
server,
  so I had it uninstalled
- MSSQL is available, but I don't use it

I can't think of anything else, but I'm completely satisfied. Feel free to
ask
about more specifics if you need them.

Rick

PS - and from Jochems remarks awhile back, you do just get a "slice" of a
quad-core
Pentium, but that beats a "slice" of a Pentium 4!

That would prevent the query from using an index, and it may have some

An alternative would be to apply these functions once for all on the
titles,
store the result in an extra column and ORDER BY this column.

Re: Sort database records as a human not a computer.

2009-03-16 Thread Greg Morphis

Ian, you could do something like this...
select * from footest
order by (case when title like '"%' then substr(title, 2, length(title))
when title like 'a %' then substr(title, 3, length(title))
when title like 'an %' then substr(title, 4, length(title))
when title like 'the %' then substr(title, 5, length(title))
else title end)

But if you get a bunch of records I'd suggest an "orderTitle" column
like suggested prior

Subject: (ot) FTP and the ports it uses for data.

HISTORY|BACKGROUND
I am in the process of reworking a ColdFusion and Oracle 11g
application. At one point this application sends some files it
generates to another server with FTP. For various reasons, the FTP is
being done with the Oracle database management system. Thus we are
running into the 'ACL' Access Control List security feature that is new
to Oracle 11g.

If you are unfamiliar with this feature, Oracle 11g now blocks all HTTP,
SMTP and FTP access to any other servers from PL/SQL code unless a ACL
entry is created that defines what user can connect to what server with
what protocol to what port range. A pretty cool concept actually as it
really locks down the server so that it can only do what the developer
wants it to do without completely giving up these occasionally very
useful protocols.

PROBLEM
The trouble we are having is what ports are used for the FTP data
transfer. These ports need to be defined in the ACL otherwise the
process will be blocked by Oracle, but as far as we can tell just about
any of the 65,000+ ports can be used for data transfer. I am unfamiliar
with FTP server administration so how can one determine or define what
range of ports can be used for data transfers?

TIA
Ian

RE: Sort database records as a human not a computer.

2009-03-16 Thread Dawson, Michael

I'm not sure if I follow you, completely, but you can use string
manipulation functions in the ORDER BY clause to sort your data. For
example, you can use the replace function to remove quotes, for sorting.

Thanks,
Mike

TIA
Ian

2009-03-16 Thread Adrian Lynch

If you'd like to keep things simple, create a new column and enter the title
as you'd like it to be ordered by. Would love to hear if someone has an idea
about this also.

I'm also seeing "Candidate dequeued" for my paths that have CF files in them.
Has anyone had any success getting the vspider to work? I seem to be getting
these errors in both cf7 & 8, on XP and 2003 server.
