It doesn't sound like they're merging them into one product, more like
they're selling them in a package, sort of like they sell Fireworks, Flash,
and Dreamweaver (I think those are the three) in a package.

I shortly subscribed to this list and I'm glad to listen and hepefully
contribute.
Allthough a newbie on the list, I have a small suggestion to make:
I do not succeed to write a rule in my eMail-Client in order to move all the
Email from the list to a certain folder. How about a short prefix in the
subject [cfTalk] ... of every email?

Subject: Db to web: Replacing odd ascii characters in db to web

I'm managing a site where articles from a magazine are being cut and pasted
into a text entry field. The people doing the actual cut and paste routine
are starting from a Quark file. When they cut the text out of Quark and into
the db, it is putting in all sorts of strange characters - probably high
ascii characters. When a dynamically created cfm page drawing its content
from the database is displayed, it puts all sorts of heiroglyphics in the
output. For example, apostrophes and emdashes show up as a hollow square -
that sort of thing.

I've tried to do a replace function on the article's body and by and large
it works. But I don't have any way of knowing what kind of odd characters
are going to be in the database so I can't anticipate every odd character.

Is there some way to handle this type problem?

Thanks for any suggestions/solutions.

Brook,

CF5, which is just about nearing the end of its beta cycle (due out in June)
has graphing built in. So, if you can wait a few weeks, or if you can access
the beta version, that's probably your best bet.

Does any one know of a good graphing solution for a cf app? I do not want
to use the allaire applets. I would prefer not using an applet at all. I
looked at Corda Pop charts (www.popcharts.com). They have a great product
(generates flash graphs) just a little out of my price range.

Any ideas?

Yeah Howie!!! Right after my own heart!

As a graduate of the Marine Military Academy (Class of '79), I'm a real
believer in "The Marine Way," and I wanted to create a class that was a true
challenge for serious developers.

In fact, I originally had in mind a month-long course of 272 hours (4
68-hour weeks) that I affectionately named "The Crucible" after the Marine
Corps' 54-hour Crucible that, once you pass it, you are considered a United
States Marine. It was designed to forge a developer in the fires of
knowledge and challenge, and produce from that hearth a honed development
weapon that ate code and prayed for war (I mean development projects).
Unfortunately, I don't think anyone would have either the time, money, or
inclination to sign up, so it sits in the back of my mind as a mere fantasy.
Ah, love...

In the meantime, however, I really want to get people into the Advanced
Bootcamp class. I think the concensus is to go with the second, shorter
format for the lower price. I think I might even lower the price right to
the bone just to get people through this course so they can tell everyone
else about it for the next time. But next time the price will have to go
back up to the $3,500/$2,950 structure, as these things are _massively_
expensive to produce.

So why don't we do this: if you're truly interested in joining us in Atlanta
on June 11th through the (now) 15th, and you have $2,500 to spend, then
email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and request a discount coupon for an
additional $450.00. Just say in your email that you participated in the
CF-Talk feedback, and I'll give you a coupon. If we get at least ten people
to _actually send in their discounted payment_ before the Early Registration
period expires (before May 5th), then we'll keep the course open. If not,
then we'll remove the course from the schedule and only offer less intensive
stuff from now on.

Look... Everyone has been asking for truly advanced training that really
teaches developers how to engineer the hard stuff. Now it's up to you to
take the challenge and improve your development skills and earning
potential. This isn't a sales pitch, guys; it's a passion. Just look at
the detailed itinerary, and ask yourself if you can handle it. If you can,
then report for duty on June 11th.

"We must remember that one man is much the same as another, and that he
is best who is trained in the severest school."

RE: Is CF still relevant?

2001-04-20 Thread Brad Comer

Small Community - Is a good thing in my opinion, growing at a steady rate is
good, if the growing is well thought out and thoroughly implied.

I can say this much from experience, when I first started working with CF
was in the summer of 96, it was a ~SMALL~ community!!!

I dont have a problem parsing XML with CF, although no server side scripting
language like cf or asp and so on is ever going to be the best tool for
that.
Any programming language can be object oriented, it's whether or not the
language designer forces the situation as in Java's case. I can make a kick
ass OOP Basic program with goto's, who cares? You want OO on CF, check
Fusebox or cfObjects.
Lastly, Linux used to have a real tiny community too. That does not seem to
negatively affect the success of Linux today. The only thing that can be
said about a programming environment with a small community, is that is has
a small community.

Why do I use it? It works.

Subject: Is CF still relevant?

Now, before you dismiss this as a troll, please let me elaborate. This
isn't
so much an instigation or a whine as it is a call for us to take a step
back
 and reevalutate things periodically.

Over the course of my career as a web programmer/developer, I have worked
with a variety of sever-side languages and technologies: ColdFusion, ASP,
JSP, PHP, Perl and Python. I like some more than others, but I'm not an
evangelist for any; they each have their uses. And I recognize some of
CF's
strengths: easy to learn for people who know only tag-based HTML or don't
have significant programming experience; built-in admin tool; specialized
editor; comes with pre-built tags and web-based administrator. There are
also major flaws: broken/sketchy tags; no XML parsing; not OOP; relatively
 small community; etc.

Right now, I work at a web development firm that is primarily "a CF house"
(besides me). Our more senior programmers are looking at honing their CF
skills, while our less experienced webmasters are trying to learn
ColdFusion. But, I can't help but wonder whether they are wasting their
time. Would they be better off spending their time learning ASP, Java or
another non-CF solution? Why or why not?

And how would we tell if and when it was time to give up CF and try
something else, as all but the most stubborn experts in also-ran languages
(Ada, SmallTalk), applications (Netscape, Lotus Notes) and Operating
Systems
 (Amiga) have resignedly done?

Lastly, why do *you* still use CF? Is it because it's what you're best at,
and you don't want to try something new (where, temporarily, you'd be a
novice again)? Is it because your ccompany's legacy code is all in CF? Is
it
because you genuinely think that ColdFusion is, generally speaking, the
best
solution for web application development in 2001?

 Joe
