RE: CF Extensions for eclipse

2007-08-20 Thread Chad Gray
Thanks Ray,

I think my Eclipse install is hosed up. I was playing with the all in one
install of Eclipse

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/webtools/downloads/drops/R2.0/R-2.0-200706260303/wtp-all-in-one-sdk-R-2.0-200706260303-win32.zip

(trying to get CSS to autocomplete) and selected the same workspace as my other
install and since then things have been acting strange.

I never have gotten eclipse to autocomplete CSS. I have to load Aptana to get
CSS to autocomplete.

I spoke to Dean about this. This is his response:

We don't have any dependencies on that plugin, that's an error from
eclipse that has nothing to do with our stuff.

End Dean's response. So you may want to maybe double check that you
don't have something else wrong. Perhaps uninstall/reinstall the
plugin.

Are there any tags/functions that are only available in Enterprise?

Go to the PDFs - in the Reference, under tags and functions, you will
find a list of changes since CF5. I bet you will find stuff added to
CF7 you didn't know about either! :)

RE: CF / Alagad / Photography Questions

2007-08-07 Thread Chad Gray
ImageCR works great. We use it for our photography studio's proofing web sites
that I built. It can handle the large images you are talking about and caches
the resized image so it does not have to be processed every time the page is
requested.

It also has a sharpen setting if you find that the images are bit soft.

Any time you take large images and reduce them you are tossing out a lot of
pixels and you will need to add some sharpening to them. This is true with any
image resizing program.

RE: CF / Alagad / Photography Questions

2007-08-07 Thread Chad Gray
Another option is not to upload such large files.

Prep them first with a photoshop action. Have the customer take the images
from the CD and run them through a photoshop action to resize them to the max
size used on the web site. You will have to apply some sharpening in photoshop
also so plan to use the un-sharp mask filter in the photoshop action.

Then upload the images to your app.

You will have to explain to your client what is going on... no software can
take large images and reduce them without some tweaks (sharpening) to make them
look good.

RE: cfdocument issues.

2007-08-07 Thread Chad Gray
I have had problems in the past where cfdocument would not pull in an image.

I figured out that because the directory had NTFS permissions on it that the
IUSR (anonymous) user was not allowed to load the image cfdocument could not
load the image.

Maybe you are running into the same thing that the CSS cannot be loaded because
of user permissions where the CSS file is

I solved it by placing the image out in a public folder, then cfdocument could
load the image into the PDF.

Is there a best practice when creating an object?

Do you store your objects in the session or application scope so you can use it

I suppose it is a case by case decision.

Is there an application out there that uses CFCs really well and I should look

RE: cfquery error, help please.

2007-08-01 Thread Chad Gray
With query of query you don't have database functions like LEFT() because you
are not running your query on a database engine like MS SQL or MySQL.

Do a CF left() function when you output your data.

Subject: cfquery error, help please.

What's wrong with my SQL statement?

cfquery dbtype=query name=calander
SELECT LEFT(filename,3) as mnth, filename FROM dir_data
where filename like '%calendar%'
/cfquery

This the LEFT is causing an error. Anyone know what might be the fix or
problem?

The error itself is:

*Query Of Queries syntax error.*
Encountered LEFT. Incorrect Select List, Incorrect select column,

BTW, what I'm doing is trying to grab the latest file based on the month in
the file name. The naming convention for the files are Jan07Calander.doc I
can't just take the max because when a file like Aug07Calander.doc is placed
in the directory, it won't pick it up.

Thanks..

application.cfc and var

2007-08-01 Thread Chad Gray
Ok now that I have learned about declaring variables in CFCs so you don't run
into race conditions and problems. How about application.cfc?

Do I need to use cfset var foo = in application.cfc?

RE: CFDocument Help

2007-07-31 Thread Chad Gray
You might want to look at using iText. Here is a CFC that shows some code that
uses iText to place images.
http://www.reactivevision.com/coldPDF.txt

I have not experimented very much with CFDocument and exact placement of items,
but the results I have seen are very inconsistent. I think mainly because you
are taking HTML and CFdocument it converting it to PDF. So there is some fudge
factor.

Have you tried using CSS instead of HTML? With CSS you might get better
results because you can position thinks absolute.
div style=position: absolute; top: 96px; left: 20px; border: 2px solid
#00;
/div

I have also used PDFToolKit from Active pdf in a .Net application to create
PDFs. I suppose with CF8 I will be able to use this .net dll... could be
interesting.

I am trying to create a 2 page document with a custom page size (17x11

the document in two columns.

Example:
Create a new cf page and paste the following code:

cfdocument name=MyPDF filename=MyPDF.pdf format=PDF
pagetype=custom pageheight=11 pagewidth=17 margintop=0
marginbottom=0 marginright=0 marginleft=0 orientation=portrait
unit=in backgroundvisible=yes overwrite=yes fontembed=no
cfdocumentsection margintop=0 marginbottom=0 marginright=0
marginleft=0
table width=1650 border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0
bgcolor=#00
tr
td width=825 height=1050 style=color:#FFpage 1, column 1/td
td width=825 height=1050 style=color:#FFpage 1, column 2/td
/tr
/table
/cfdocumentsection
cfdocumentsection margintop=0 marginbottom=0 marginright=0
marginleft=0

td width=825 height=1050 style=color:#FFpage 2, column 1/td
td width=825 height=1050 style=color:#FFpage 2, column 2/td
/tr
/table
/cfdocumentsection
/cfdocument

a href=MyPDF.pdf target=_blankMyPDF.pdf/a

When you click on the link you will see a pdf generated that is 2 pages
long. I need one page. I am going to be filling these two columns with
images and text generated from a database, but this basic framework is
the key.

I have no idea how to build this so it fills in 100% of the page and not
overflow onto an extra page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even
if you can help me learn the height and width of the anticipated PDF at
17x11inches I would be thrilled.

I would be happy to send you the origional pdf is that would help anything.

I started playing more with cfdocument. The below code fit a div with a 1px
border exactly onto a 8.5x11 document. You move it 1px in any direction and it
gets funky... there is definitely some translation when going from HTML to PDF
when using CFDocument.

cfdocument format=pdf pagetype=letter margintop=0 marginbottom=0
marginleft=0 marginright=0

div style=border: 1px solid #00;
width: 613px;
height: 795.5px;

What good are help files if I have to be online to get to them?

Adobe really seems to be pushing Eclipse... are they trying to kill Dreamweaver?

I would use Eclipse if I could find a way to auto complete CSS while coding in
CF with auto complete. Dreamweaver I get auto complete for CSS and CF.

That makes the variable exist only for the duration of that method call.

For instance, you have a CFC which is persisted in the application
scope.

cfset application.my_cfc = CreateObject('component','CFC.foo')

It has a method called helloWorld() which queries their name out of the
database a returns it.

cfquery name=qry_your_name
Select etc.
/cfquery

cfreturn qry_your_name.full_name

Now, let's say two different people in the same app call that method at
the same time. Right now, qry_your_name will exist in variables, which
is global to the entire CFC.

Here we just created a race condition. User one's query runs, and then
user two's query overwrites. Then the cfreturn hands back the same data
to both users.

The solution:

cfset var qry_your_name =

cfquery name=qry_your_name
Select etc.
/cfquery

cfreturn qry_your_name.full_name

Now EACH call to that method has its own qry_your_name variable which
can not be overwritten by concurrent usage of the CFC

Print this out and place it on your cube wall. I did. :)

RE: CFC defining vars

2007-07-30 Thread Chad Gray
Thanks for all of the info on this subject. I have fixed most of my existing
code.

One question I have is what happens if I don't declare a name= attribute for
a cfquery?

IE:

cfquery datasource=#application.dsn#
Lots of sql here
/cfquery

I tend to do this on updates or inserts of a database records when I don't care
what the query returns.

Is this bad? Should I always use a name so I can create a Var scope and define
it?

RE: CF page calling a Webservice that returns a complex structure

2007-07-27 Thread Chad Gray
You say that the web service returns XML, why don't you work the XML with CF's
XML functions?

Do a CFDump on what they send and see what it is. If it is XML you will
probably need to run XMLParse() on it to turn it into a CF XML object. Then
run CFDump on it.

The CF documentation has some great examples of how to work with XML.

Archie Campbell wrote:
 I am finding this task uncharacteristically difficult to do with Cold
 Fusion.
 I suspect there is an easier way, I just cant think of it.

 Here is the situation.

 There is an external Webservice that returns XML containing information
 on all unpaid invoices for a customer.
 The XML document contains 1 or many invoices each having 1 or many
 invoice detail lines.
 The CF program I am writing is supposed to:
 . call the webservice
 . get the XML info and either:
A. save it in an XML text file for further processing by
 Excel or Access or another CF program or ...
B. convert it to a struct, process it a bit, like total
 fields, rename fields
 producing a new struct which is then saved to an XML
 text file

 The external (non CF) webservice returns a complex structure like:

 InvoiceCollection
 . countOfInvoices
 . totalAmount
 . Invoices:  (repeating multiple times)
. invoiceNumber
. invoiceDate
. invoiceAmount
. countOfInvoiceLines
. InvoiceLines   (repeating multiple times)
  . lineNumber
  . description
  . amount

 I have successfully accepted the webservice return object and produced a
 CF struct from it.
 It was a bit tedious, but I have it done.

 After I had the struct I thought I could use the data conversion routine
 StructToXml from cflib.org to produce a string that I would write to a
 file with cffile.
 It was missing the arrayOfStructs. Not much there.
 Then I read the fine print on StructToXml and noted that it says it
 converts simple structs.
 A struct whose elements include an array of stucts is not included in
 the definition of simple.
 Darn I said.

 Basically, right now, I have my struct and I am stuck.
 What I originally thought to be a simple task for Cold Fusion (CF nicely
 takes many otherwise complex tasks and makes them simple)
 has got me stuck.

 Any thoughts would be appreciated.

 Thanks
 Archie Campbell

I think I typed this out right... might be some typos. Basically use
XmlElemNew to create the new node then assign it's XmlAttributes and XmlText to
what you want.

cfset xml = XMLParse(#XMLgoesHere#)

cfset
xml.BackgroundCheck.BackgroundSearchPackage.Screenings.ClientReferences.XmlChildren[2]
 =  XmlElemNew(xml, IdValue)

cfset
xml.BackgroundCheck.BackgroundSearchPackage.Screenings.ClientReferences.IdValue[2].XmlAttributes.name

cfset
xml.BackgroundCheck.BackgroundSearchPackage.Screenings.ClientReferences.IdValue[2].XmlText
 = crf2

Subject: XML Insert Problem

We are having trouble inserting a line into XML when using
straight string manipulation it blows up on XML Search. We
are guessing that there is a better
way to insert the line. Details below.

The existing XML structure shows (partial XML is noted in
the examples below and does not represent the entire xml
document):

ClientReferences

 IdValue
name=ClientReferenceField2_Valuecrf2/IdValue

/ClientReferences

We wish to add another IdValue node before the
ClientReferenceField2_Value attribute as follows:

 IdValue
name=ClientReferenceField1_Valuecrf1/IdValue

The resulting XML structure would show:

ClientReferences

 IdValue
name=ClientReferenceField1_Valuecrf1/IdValue

 IdValue
name=ClientReferenceField2_Valuecrf2/IdValue

/ClientReferences

The full Xpath to ClientReferences is as follows:

/BackgroundCheck/BackgroundSearchPackage/Screenings/ClientReferences

Notes:

- Assume the existing XML document is in a
ColdFusion structure through the use of XmlParse()

- The resulting XML should be maintained as a
ColdFusion structure that will allow Xpath searches using
XMLSearch()

You don't put it in the variable paramter, but rather between the tags.

cfcontent#myXMLString/cfcontent

You will probably want to provide the proper content headers with
cfheader... tags before this.

Next question. Firefox does not like the fact that the file name has
spaces in it.

With the below code the file that is saved is test

With IE it replaces the space with an underscore. test_1234.xml

cfheader name=Content-Disposition

Ya I tried that, but you get the literal %20 in the name...

Ben's surrounding with double quotes fixed firefox to have the proper name, but
IE still replaces the blanks with underscores.

That is not too bad I would like IE to get the name absolutely right.

Use the URL encoding for a space [%20] perhaps?

cfheader name=Content-Disposition value=attachment;
filename=test%201234.xml

But spaces in file names should usually be avoided when possible in web
applications.

CDDocument Image problem

2007-07-23 Thread Chad Gray
I am trying to use CFDocument to make a PDF of a web page.

I have an image that produces what kinds of looks like a missing image icon in
the PDF. When I click on thing in Acrobat it says There was an error
processing an annotation or link. There was a problem reading this document
(14).

http://chadgray.info/Untitled-1.jpg

Now this code works fine on our development server. Only on the production
server do I get the problem.

My code to place the image is simple enough. The page and image are in the
same folder. The PDF is saved into a sub-folder.

td width=352 height=59 valign=top align=center
img src=invoicelogoNEW.jpg border=0
/td

My code to make the pdf and save it is:
cfdocument format=pdf pagetype=letter name=invoice overwrite=yes

cffile action=write file=#application.invoicePDFPath##fileName#
output=#invoice#

H now that I think more about this. The area that this code is running
from does have NTFS permissions on it so users have to login to use the web
site. Does CFDocument need permissions to grab the image and use it in the
PDF

cfc question

2007-07-18 Thread Chad Gray
I have a CRUD CFC that has this function and I load the CFC into the
application scope:

cffunction name=readZJF access=public returntype=query
cfargument name=criteria type=string required=yes

cfquery datasource=dsn name=readZJF
SELECT *
FROM FlexoDirectConfigFiles
WHERE #arguments.criteria#
/cfquery

cfreturn readZJF
/cffunction

I want to be able to pass in the WHERE statement into it. So it could be:
FileName = 'PLATES.zjf' AND FileModificationDate = '09/30/2005 12:34:01 PM'

So I run something like this to call the function:

cfset DoesFileAlreadyExist = application.ZJF.readZJF(FileName =
'#getZJF_files.name#' AND FileModificationDate =
'#getZJF_files.dateLastModified#')

What I get back is an error:
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Incorrect syntax near
'PLATES.zjf'.

Then I look at the SQL that was run in debugging.
SELECT *
FROM FlexoDirectConfigFiles
WHERE FileName = ''PLATES.zjf'' AND FileModificationDate = ''09/30/2005
12:34:01 PM''

Why did it take my single quotes and add another single quote? Is it trying to
escape the single quote? How do I keep it from doing this?

RE: cfc question

2007-07-18 Thread Chad Gray
Thank Matt, Jim and Dan.

I see where you guys are going with this.

As far as security im not sure how using the array is any better.

I suppose once things are broken out using the array I could then validate the
data coming in with cfqueryparam.

This would keep people from tacking on sub-queries and injecting their own SQL
statements.

Thanks for the help!

Chad,

cfquery is indeed escaping your single quotes. You can get around this in
a couple of ways. The first is to use preserveSingleQuotes() in your
function, like so:

WHERE #preserveSingleQuotes(arguments.criteria)#

While that is a very easy solution, you will be opening yourself up to all
sorts of security risks. Therefore, I would strongly urge that you do *not*
use this solution.

Another solution would be to add an argument that would accept an array, or
an array of structs that would hold your criteria. Here is a quick example
of what I mean.

!--- calling page ---
cfscript
   myArray = arrayNew(1);
   myArray[1] = structNew();
   myArray[1].field = FileName;
   myArray[1].value = PLATES.zjf;
   myArray[1].quote = true;
   myArray[2].field = FileModificationDate;
   myArray[2].value = 09/30/2005 12:34:01 PM;
   myArray[2].quote = true;
/cfscript

!--- function ---
cfargument name=criteria type=array /

cfquery
   WHERE 0 = 0
   cfloop from=1 to=#arrayLen(arguments.criteria)# index=i
  AND #arguments.criteria[i].field# =
 cfif arguments.criteria[i].quote
'#arguments.criteria[i].value#'
 cfelse
#arguments.criteria[i].value#
 /cfif
   /cfloop
/cfquery

Hope that helps.

Matt

I have a CRUD CFC that has this function and I load the CFC into the
 application scope:

 cffunction name=readZJF access=public returntype=query
 cfargument name=criteria type=string required=yes

 cfquery datasource=dsn name=readZJF
 SELECT *
 FROM FlexoDirectConfigFiles
 WHERE #arguments.criteria#
 /cfquery

 cfreturn readZJF
 /cffunction

 I want to be able to pass in the WHERE statement into it. So it could
 be:
 FileName = 'PLATES.zjf' AND FileModificationDate = '09/30/2005 12:34:01
 PM'

 So I run something like this to call the function:

 cfset DoesFileAlreadyExist = application.ZJF.readZJF(FileName =
 '#getZJF_files.name#' AND FileModificationDate =
 '#getZJF_files.dateLastModified#')

 What I get back is an error:

RE: preserving session for web services

2007-07-18 Thread Chad Gray
Ya... I was experimenting with an AIR app a while back and it connected to a
Coldfusion CFC. The session was created when the AIR app hit the CFC and the
session expired at the predetermined time.

You might have to build a cfc for the distributors web service calls to create
your session objects, but once created then the future webservice calls will be
able to access the session objects. Like Brad said... IF it can accept a
cookie.

Setup a test application.cfm and cfc with session stuff in it and with
access=remote on the functions and have them hit the CFC WSDL and see what
happens.

Subject: preserving session for web services

Greetings,

I have a question for the list. A distributor wants to connect to our
ecommerce system, which is an OO setup using cfc's. Their site however
is an asp.net site. What we are looking at is using web services to
send the results back to the browser on the distributor's site. However
our ecommerce system uses session variables to hold various objects,
like a user object, a shopping cart object etc. This obviously may be a
problem. So how do we maintain session between the different web service
calls to our site?

Any help or suggestions on this is most appreciated.

thx,

larry

cfqueryparam and XML

2007-07-17 Thread Chad Gray
I am writing a create database record function in my CFC.

Now one argument that is being passed in is data type of XML. So I use
cfargument and set the type to XML.

Now when I am doing my INSERT into the database I am using cfqueryparam and
noticed there is no cfsqltype of XML.

What should I do?

Now I don't HAVE to pass in a CF XML object. I could leave it the raw text
from when I read the XML file with CFFile and pass that in to the CFC function.

Honestly I don't know if when I do the insert if MS SQL is going to like me
passing in a CF XML object. I have not tried it yet. The datatype in the MS
SQL table is XML.

Ya... sorry I should have said MS SQL 2005 and the datatype is XML.

I experimented and used cf_sql_varchar with both a CF XML object and plain old

text.

I wonder if CF8 will have an XML type to support MS SQL 2005.

The CFQUERYPARAM type is supposed to match the type of column you are
inserting into.

Typically, dumping XML into a standard MSSQL database I would assume
your column type is either text or ntext.

If you are using MS SQL 2005... Which has an XML type for the
columns... hmm I'd still use the text type.

How would you use CFDocument and CFMail together?

I don’t see a way to take the PDF that CFDocument makes and save it to the
file system, or pass it as a variable to CFMailParam.

You know I though that Acrobat Reader would allow you to email the PDF once
opened in your browser, but I don’t see this option in acrobat reader. The
closest I see is a button called send to fedex kinkos and that is not what I
want.

Use cfdocument to create the pdf and cfmail to send the E-mail attaching

Let the user type into a text area whatever they wish to be included in
the body of the E-mail.

This returns a query with data from a database

cfinvoke component=com.mySite method=readRecord returnVariable=qry

/cfinvoke

I want to dump the query from above into this function that does a database

cfset create = CreateObject(component,com.mySite) /
cfset create.createRecord(argumentCollection=qry) /

If not, is there a way to convert my query into a structure that I can dump

invoking a cfc function with minimal typing

I have a function in a CFC that does an update on a database table.

cffunction name=updateTable access=public
cfargument name=id type=numeric required=yes
cfargument name=Feild1 type=string required=no
cfargument name=Field2 type=string required=no

cfquery datasource=#variables.dataSource#
UPDATE table SET
Field1='#arguments.Field1#',
Field2='#arguments.Field2#'
WHERE id = #arguments.id#
/cfquery
/cffunction

I can use cfinvoke with cfinvokearguments tags for each field, but that is a
lot of typing.

What is best way to send the arguments to the function with the least amount of
typing?

I suppose is my real question is how do you use cfscript to send the data?

RE: invoking a cfc function with minimal typing

2007-06-07 Thread Chad Gray
Oh wow.. that looks powerful. They are form fields.

I get this error Variable COM is undefined. when trying it. I must have my
cfc's not configured right.

cfset com.mysite.ticketdata.updateTable(argumentcollection=form) /

If I use cfinvoke I format my component with dots
cfinvoke component=com.mysite.ticketdata method=updateTable

What do I need to do to use cfset with my cfc?

Thanks!
Chad

if you're sending form fields...

cfset myInstance.updateTable(argumentcollection=form) /

you can send an array, you can send a struct... you can send any
number of simple variables wrapped up in a single complex var.

 cfquery datasource=#variables.dataSource#
 UPDATE table SET

 Field2='#arguments.Field2#'

 I can use cfinvoke with cfinvokearguments tags for each field, but that is
 a lot of typing.

 What is best way to send the arguments to the function with the least amount
 of typing?

 I suppose is my real question is how do you use cfscript to send the data?

Thanks Dave!

Now here is my code
cfinvoke component=com.mysite.ticketdata method=updateTable
returnVariable=update
cfset update(argumentcollection=form) /

I get an error:
The parameter ID to function updateTable is required but was not passed in.

If I look at my cf debugging the form field ID is defined.

Form Fields:
ID=75
FIELD1=test
FIELD2=test

cfset myInstanceName = createObject('component', 'com.mysite.ticketdata') /

obviously, 'myInstanceName' can be any variable name.

bear in mind that createObject() is a relatively expensive process.
if the component has methods that will be called frequently throughout
the application, it might be a good idea to instantiate it into the
application scope. this way you're just doing a createObject() once,
but can refer to the methods within the component as many times as
needed within the application.

for example... wherever you'd normally set your session/application variables:
cfset application.myComponent = createObject('component',
'com.mysite.ticketdata') /

then on your form's action page:
cfset application.myComponent.updateTable(argumentcollection=form) /

Not quite sure what you mean, but if I understand right I would look at the
database for currently active or running queries. I would not look to do this

MS SQL has a tool called the SQL Server Profiler.

Beside declaring them in the session scope, is there any mean to find

Both in CFMX and CF 5 ?

select name=NEW_Plate_to_make

dump http hit

I don't know if it is going to be a POST or GET either.

SQL question

2007-04-03 Thread Chad Gray
I am using MS SQL and have a field with data type DateTime.

I want to find all records with the day 4/2/2007?

If I do

I get no records and I have lots of records like this in the database:

4/2/2007 9:57:57 AM
4/2/2007 10:57:57 AM
4/2/2007 5:57:57 AM
4/2/2007 2:57:57 AM

I want to keep the time in my data so I don't want to modify the data type.

How do I write my query to find all records on the day 4/2/2007?

MONTH()/Day()/Year()'ing Please do not run functions on your
date/time fields. Running a function on a column in general is extremely
slow. Date/time stamps can be used quite nicely with out them:

DECLARE @date DATETIME;
SET @date = '04/14/2006';

SELECT *
FROM [TABLE]
WHERE
date_created = @date
AND
date_created  (@date + 1)

Notice that I comparing the date_created to the set date and also that
it is LESS than the set date PLUS one (the next day). This is going to
perform a 100 times better than any function you call on the date
column.

RE: SQL question

2007-04-03 Thread Chad Gray
Thanks Ben, and Joe here is what finally worked for me.

dateCreated = '04/03/2007' AND dateCreated  DATEADD(DAY, 1, '04/03/2007')

With
dateCreated = '04/03/2007' AND dateCreated  ('04/03/2007' + 1)

I get this error:
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '04/03/2007' to data type
int.

So I probably have to cast as a date in order to get this to work.

Check to see if either server has a root mapping (i.e. / is mapped to
something) and if there are any other differences between the mappings

CFCs and Best Practices

2007-03-18 Thread Chad Gray
I have doing spaghetti CF sites for a few years now and have started to
understand the importance of separating your display code from your logic code.

Is there a best practice for using CFCs and CF?

I read the documentation on CFCs and there are lots of ways to use them.

You can use CFinvoke, CFScript you can make a mapping to your CFCs or you can
keep them local to the CFM pages. You can use CFInvokeArgurments or just place
arguments in CFInvoke.

Inheritance and persistence confuses me some.. when should you use them?

I found the book 'Discovering CFCs: ColdFusion MX Components' but it got rough
reviews on amazon.com.

Thanks,
Chad

 If Google Checkout takes it, we take it. We also take paypal but the
 paypal page is not up due to me being a bit bogged down (Judith will be
 giving birth in the next few days). If you want to use paypal, email me
 off list and I'll set you up.

 Michael, thanks for the links.

 Do you take amex? My company CC is amex I would like to subscribe.

 Feel free to reply to my email and take this off CFTalk.

RE: CFCs and Best Practices

2007-03-18 Thread Chad Gray
Thanks Dave, I think you are right that I need to pick up on OO concepts.

I have been picking at the head first object-oriented analysis and design
book, but kind of get lost in the java language since I truly don't know it.

I will keep reading and learning, thanks for your awesome response, it answers
a lot of questions!

My problems with persistence is the cflocking thing that the documentation
mentions. Im not sure when I would have to lock thinks.

 Subject: RE: CFCs and Best Practices

  Is there a best practice for using CFCs and CF?

 Yes, there are best practices for using CFCs, and most of them are largely
 drawn from best practices in any other class-based OO programming
 language,
 such as Java. Your best bet for understanding these best practices is to
 learn general OO programming concepts, which can then be applied pretty
 easily to CF in many cases.

  I read the documentation on CFCs and there are lots of ways
  to use them.

  You can use CFinvoke, CFScript you can make a mapping to your
  CFCs or you can keep them local to the CFM pages. You can
  use CFInvokeArgurments or just place arguments in CFInvoke.

 There's nothing wrong with any of these approaches, actually. There are
 places where it may make more sense to use one than another, but the
 differences are pretty minor. In general, it's pretty common to use
 CFINVOKE
 when using a CFC as a static class, and to use CFSET or CFSCRIPT along
 with
 CreateObject when using a CFC as a class template from which you want to
 create instances. But the differences between one and the other are more a
 matter of personal preference than best practice.

  Inheritance and persistence confuses me some.. when should
  you use them?

 Persistence doesn't really have anything to do with CFCs. You persist CFC
 instances just like you'd persist any other variable in CF. If, for
 example,
 it makes sense to store something in the user's session, it doesn't matter
 whether it's an object instance or an array or structure or whatever.

 Inheritance (and composition, and a bunch of other things) are part of OO,
 and you should use them when it makes sense to use them. That's pretty
 much
 a non-answer, but an actual answer would require a lot more explanation,
 and
 you're going to have to learn OO programming anyway. But, for a quick
 example, let's say you have people in general that you want to represent
 in
 your program, and they all share common characteristics. So, you might
 write
 a Person CFC that you will use to create Person objects. You might also
 have
 different types of people, who have their own characteristics in addition
 to
 those common characteristics, say Customers and Employees. It would make
 sense in this case to have Customer and Employee CFCs that extend Person,
 to
 add those type-specific characteristics. That's inheritance. A customer
 is
 a person; inheritance is an is a relationship. The other common
 relationship, composition, is a has a relationship. For example, people
 might have addresses, or roles, or whatever, that might be represented by
 their own CFCs.

  I found the book 'Discovering CFCs: ColdFusion MX Components'
  but it got rough reviews on amazon.com.

 I think it's actually a pretty good book, it was just written at a very
 bad
 time. When CFMX first came out, CFCs had lots of problems and limitations,
 and this book spends a significant amount of time covering workarounds for
 those limitations. Since then, newer versions of CF have removed many of
 those limitations, making the workarounds unnecessary.

/cfloop

'i' might be treated as a string there instead of a number,

SQL order by

2007-01-25 Thread Chad Gray
When you use ORDER BY in SQL on a text field it sorts the data like this:

1
11
12
13
2
21
22

Where I want
1
2
11
12
13
21
22

I cannot switch it to an integer field because there will be some text also.

Any way to accomplish this?

Thanks!
Chad

Thanks Andy,

I am using MS SQL and don't have substring_index. Is there a MS SQL function
similar?

I will have to look up CASE, I am not familiar with that function.

maybe something like...
SELECT thefield FROM foo
ORDER BY CASE WHEN IsNumeric(thefield)=1 THEN CAST(thefield AS INT) ELSE
0 END,thefield

That should put the text fields at the beginning, sorted alphabetically,
and the numeric fields at the end, sorted numerically.

RE: SQL order by

2007-01-25 Thread Chad Gray
Ok..

So basically your statement is re-defining thefield as an integer if
isNumeric returns 1. Else 0 returning thefield as it's original data type.

ORDER BY CASE WHEN IsNumeric(thefield)=1 THEN CAST(thefield AS INT) ELSE 0
END,thefield

Very cool!
Thanks for the lesson, I have never used WHEN, THEN, ELSE, END in SQL.

Case isn't a function. It's a flow control statement. Just like doing a
cfswitch statement in CF.

RE: Quick CFEclipse question

2007-01-25 Thread Chad Gray
I just got done installing Homesite on my new computer along side of CFEclipse
and Dreamweaver because I missed Homesites searching and replacing so much.

Homesite can search for carriage returns and replace them with commas... I love
that!

I can quickly take comma delimited data and replace the comma with a carriage
return... I can search for tab and replace it with a comma etc...

Homesite's searching and replacing just rocks!

In the past I have created my forms. Then submit to an empty action page. I
grab from the debugging all of the form vars that were submitted:

FIELDNAMES=TYPE,CATALOGID,ELEMENTID,SKU,ELEMENTDESCRIPTION,PAGE,ELEMENTTYPE,TYPEOFSHOT,SIMPLEORADVANCED,PROPS,OUTLINETYPE,JID,NOTES,CAREYNOTES

Now I use home site to find the comma and replace with this:
,cfparam name=FORM.

Now I have:
TYPE,cfparam name=FORM.CATALOGID,cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTID,cfparam
name=FORM.SKU,cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTDESCRIPTION,cfparam
name=FORM.PAGE,cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTTYPE,cfparam
name=FORM.TYPEOFSHOT,cfparam name=FORM.SIMPLEORADVANCED,cfparam
name=FORM.PROPS,cfparam name=FORM.OUTLINETYPE,cfparam
name=FORM.JID,cfparam name=FORM.NOTES,cfparam name=FORM.CAREYNOTES

Now I do another extended replace on comma (the cr represents a carriage
return):
 default=
cr

Now my results are this:
TYPE default=
cfparam name=FORM.CATALOGID default=
cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTID default=
cfparam name=FORM.SKU default=
cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTDESCRIPTION default=
cfparam name=FORM.PAGE default=
cfparam name=FORM.ELEMENTTYPE default=
cfparam name=FORM.TYPEOFSHOT default=
cfparam name=FORM.SIMPLEORADVANCED default=
cfparam name=FORM.PROPS default=
cfparam name=FORM.OUTLINETYPE default=
cfparam name=FORM.JID default=
cfparam name=FORM.NOTES default=
cfparam name=FORM.CAREYNOTES

I clean up the last bit of it and now I have in less then 30 seconds all of the
cfparam tags I could ever need for this form submission.

You got me pointed in a great new direction. I will figure out the details and
if there is a better function then isNumeric for the data I am dealing with.

 I should point out one issue with the way I did it...the isnumeric
 function is not perfect, and will resolve to true things that can't be
 converted to INT...case in point...

 IsNumeric('1,0.') = 1
 CAST('1,0.' AS INT) throws an error

and further, you need to look at the numeric data you are
converting...is it all ints...you may need to convert to something
else...also, you can google on isreallynumeric and
isreallyinteger...those are some custom functions I've used in the past.

sorry about the multiple posts...headache...not thinking clearly.

I cant get it to work in Dreamweaver. Everytime I try to type a carriage
return in it executes the search.

How do you do it in dreamweaver?

You know, you can do that from within Dreamweaver too, right?
