RE: 2 probs: logout and password

2001-07-20 Thread Chris Straight

if you create a global error page when something goes wrong and give your
users a friendly message that they can not go back anymore that would work.
so everytime a specific variable comes up empty that isn't supposed to,
display a message according to what the variable is.

One thing you can try is use CFLOCATION to send user back to a page of
your choice.

I use this in the Application.cfm , if the client var is not set or is the
default user is not logged in send them back to home page.

1. I have been trying to do a logout that will not allow the user to use
the back button on the browser. I have set client variables to 0 have
cfDeleteClientVariables and still I am able to hit the back button and see
the last page that I was on before logging out. However, I can no longer
use the site. (error msgs when I try to navigate on any of the links relying
on client variables). So I feel like I'm half way there...What's a good
solution for this??
2. On NN6 The username/password is always there when I pull it up. I have
put cfset username= on the login page but it hasn't made a difference.
This is the only browser that is doing this. Any ideas/solutions?
Thanks,

RE: Session hijacking - help!

2001-06-27 Thread Chris Straight

just a thought are you using cflock to lock the session variables. We just
had this issue because one of our systems was a rush job. Once I added
cflock tags everything was ok again. It only started doing it when a lot of
people were using it. CF doesn't seem to handle it very well (It wasn't
designed to). when you create a cflock you should use the
#session.sessionID# as the name which takes the client cfid and cftoken and
combines them to make a unique ID for that session.

cflock name=#session.sessionID# type=exclusive timeout=30

Hope this helps if not I really couldn't tell you off the top of my head
what it would be.

Hey gang,

I've got a really WEIRD thing going on... a true stumper.

Got a CF/SQL7 box. It's sitting on a client's internal LAN. Hence, their
users on their LAN (and they're nationwide - I believe users in the field
dial in and/or have dedicated lines, I'm not 100% sure - not my problem) hit
this box pretty quick when they're using the app that's running on it (it's
a computer-based training app).

The app keeps track of users via session variables - tuck the userID in a
session var, etc. No sweat.

The thing is... occasionally, when there are multiple people accessing the
training app at the same time, sessions get hijacked. To wit:

Joe is in the training app. His 'session.userid' is 123.
Mary comes along, logs in, starts using the app. Her userid is 456.
At some point, Joe's computer all of a sudden thinks its session.userid is
456 - Mary's.

Why?

On top of all this... this only happens INSIDE THEIR LAN. Those of us on the
outside (in our office, and in the office of the partner company who
develops the content for the system) have NO problems like this.

I've put in some debug display code and would have the company's
propellerheads go through the app, from within their LAN, and boom - the
output of the session.userid changes. The IP info for the client boxes is
fine - I was spitting that out with the rest of the info - and it went
unchanged.

I understand that session info is stored in the server's RAM. I'm
considering trying to swap over to a client variable-based method, and
storing that info in the database.

Thoughts?

From what I understand People are looking for a feature rich forum system
that is cheap and customizable. What about an Open Source Project. I am very
willing to contribute my time and effort as well as code that I have been
working on to create a free to use and modify Forum System. It seems to be
needed. I want to see how many people would be interested in working on such

What about the bare-bones-bboard found on allaire.com/developer ? I know
it's not exactly feature rich, but as far as a simple threaded messageboard
is concerned, I've been able to integrate it fairly well for a couple of
different clients, massaging the look and feel as I see fit. You have to add
your own login capability if you need it, but it does send emails to the
person posting the message if they choose to receive notification.

It's small, open-source, and free!

There is always the option of writing it yourselfand webmonkey gives you

I have yet to find a Forum application that fits these and many other
requirements. Many seem to lack a "multi-threaded" veiw. FuseTalk, for
example doesn't seem to have a multi-threaded view. All responses on a
certain subject appear in the order they were posted with no hint as too
which message is being directly replied to. This behavior is more like a
 mailing list than a forum.

(Here I go again. ;p)

SMB has the option of viewing all threads in a tree-view or in a
thread-view. For example:

Like this:

Or Like this:

 Price: Free?

Yes. Free. GNU Public License.

Pros: Price; Clean Design that will fit into most sites without much

Thanks you. ;p

Cons: One man operation; Still in pre-release stages

True enough. The current release is functional except for the lack of some
adminstration function.

I've gotten some help on both a version that runs on CFExpress as well as
changes for MySQL... (Linux hooray!)

A couple of quick thoughts.

 -Original Message-
 From: C Kong [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

 excuse the tacky question,

Certainly :)

but i was wondering what a CF beginner ,
intermediate level, and senior level CF programmer can make in terms of
 salary out there.

That's a pretty reasonable question; unfortunately, it doesn't have a
definitive
answer. Wages vary so greatly according to location that specific wage
discussions are only valid for your specific locale. For instance, I know
that
if I move to southern California, I can make approx 50 - 90% more than I
make
now. I also know that it costs at least that much more to live there (I live
in
Houston, TX), so the higher figures aren't that impressive. There are good
COL
calculators on the internet that you can use to gauge the cost of living in
your
area compared to any other given area. From that you can approximate the
wage
you should garner based upon what others earn in other places, which you can
learn by analizing salary offers at job placement boards. There are also
some
indexes that track this sort of thing.

Sorry I don't have any links at my fingertips but a thorough search of the
internet ought to turn up many relative links. I suggest Google.com. At
least,
that's my favorite right now.

RE: HELP HELP HELP!!!

2000-11-29 Thread Chris Straight

well I fixed the comma problem for future reference. But the same problem is
persisting with the updatable query error. What I failed to mention was that
I was using Visual Source Safe and I couldn't get it to release all of the
files on the server. Now being dumb and late at night I decided to uninstall
Visual Source Safe thinking it would alleviate the problem well it didn't
and now I am stuck with all my files still checked in and now way of
releasing them... I know I could reinstall Visual Source Safe but I wouldn't
know how to release the files... has anyone had this problem before, or can
anyone point me in the right direction?

Take a peek at this. If author2 is not defined, and anything after it
is, required1 and the next field will not have a comma separating
 them.

Try something like:

'#required1#'
cfif isdefined('author2')
,'#author2#'
/cfif

cfif isdefined('title_price2')
,'#title_price2#'
/cfif

By putting the commas in front of the optional column names you can avoid
problems like this.

RE: Hanging - Netscape

2000-09-25 Thread Chris Straight

well I think it has to do with bad coding on netscapes part. I know for a
fact that Netscape 6 beta 2 does not have these problems. The best guess is
caching problems.

Concerning the nested tables: That is exactly what I have.
If it were a perfect world everyone would be running the latest browser
version but it isn't and I am not willing to conform to substandard
implementations of standards that have already been set. Don't get me wrong
I was a netscape fan for a long time but with all the problems I have been
having (that have nothing to do with what's between the keyboard and the
chair.) I am moving farther and farther away from it. All I hope is that
netscape 6 will revive my interest in their products again.

I had the same problem developing at home on the most recent Netscape
version (4.7.3?). It was not consistent, and was on a page with several
nested tables and form elements.

In any event, it went away at the client site, who is running a dino version
of 4.08. The only other difference was that I was using IIS, while the
client had NES 2.0 (more dinoware...)

Does anyone know why netscape 4.61 hangs until it is minimized or one goes

Does anyone have a workaround for this?

IE 4.5 and 5.5 fly to the next page.

ok so I have calculated a percentage of a number and now I need to trim the
number to 5 characters including the decimal point. it doesn't seem as if I
can modify the values in an array without inserting a new value. I may be
way off and I hope I am but does anyone know of how I could do this with
ColdFusion?

RE: Where can I get custom tag to ZIP files ?

2000-09-01 Thread Chris Straight

You could also write a java CFX tag using the java.util.zip classes. There
is a greate example towards the back of the "CORE JAVA2 Volume
1-Fundamentals which can get you started...

You could just use zlib and do your own compression
decompression in a CFX.. its not terribly complex
since I have used it before in PerlScripts and
for some C programming I did :)

zlib is free btw and you can find more examples
of it in use than you can shake a stick at :)

 Hi,
I am trying to make a script that can zip log files through
 ColdFusion tags.

Do you have any idea where I can get the specialized custom tag like
 CFX_Zip?

 Thanks in advanced

Buy Ben Forta's tag or roll your own. Only two options... unless you cf
generate bat files and cfexecute them to use pkzip25.exe.

Rounding to the nearest nickel?

2000-08-30 Thread Chris Straight

I seem to have a dilema and I would hope that someone on this list could
help me. I need to round a number to the nearest nickel for instance 10.225
should go to 10.20 and so on. With the round function I can only round to
the nearest whole number. I have no idea what to do and would really
appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction.

well it goes to show that companies like Microsoft "the start button

over the patents department because they don't understand what most of this

RE: [mySQL,cf,W2K: possible?]

What you need to do is create a system DSN under your odbc control pannel
with all the pertinent information. Once that is done then ColdFusion
recognizes that DS as a valid one under the coldfusion administrator...

We're trying to move a web site to a designated box with our host
(Navisite). However, we've been told that there are problems with
installing CF on a machine using this SP. The person who said this didn't
specify what the problems were...I'm having to rely on it second-hand.

What problems are there, and are there ways around it?

Thanks, gang.
