Re: CFUPDATE Question/Problem - found it

2006-04-16 Thread David Schmidt
Les --

Thanks for posting -- I was in the middle of migrating a CF5 app to CF7 and
ran into exactly the same issue.

The code works fine on CF5, but not on CF7. I added ID into the formfields
argument and it fixed it. They should REALLY fix the error message that gets
thrown because it was referencing fields I wasn't even using in the
formfields declaration.

Strange CFMX 6.1 server issues

2005-08-02 Thread David Schmidt
Hi,

Given the large group of educated CFMX 6.1 users here, I was hoping
someone might have some insight.

In two separate cases (two different servers) after a server reboot a
tried-tested-and-true CFXM6.1 server started throwing
java.security.AccessControlException: access denied
(java.io.FilePermission ) on the main custom tags directory. The
solution was to go into the CF admin, remove the custom tag directory
and re-add it and all the problems go away. Neither of these boxes has
received any patches recently.

In addition, in one case we had to replace xalan.jar (same file size,
same file date) to get XML processing working again. We have examined
the machines for any hard drive damage or any other wierdness...These
are both production servers with excellent uptime and performance in
the past...

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Any idea what is causing it?

Thanks,

David

Just got notification from Macromedia this morning -- a hotfix has been released --
Technote 18833. See:

Warm thanks go out to the folks at Macromedia: (in alphabetical order)

Sherman Gong
Christine Lawson

CFMX 6.1 has, quite honestly, re-invigorated me as regards the future of CF!

We are experiencing similar weirdness with CFMX 6.1 and MS Access DSNs -- but ONLY
when the datasources are passworded and passed username/password at runtime (in the
tag). Strip away the database password in the MDB, set default username in the CFMX
administrator datasource admin and the errors go away. There appears to be a CFMX 6.1
-> SequelLink -> ODBC issue. Who do we report this to at Macromedia? This is a major
major major issue...

Anyone else out there with thoughts/feelings?

The issue remains, there are problems in the RedSky release with passworded Access
databases and some query tags. Certainly one solution is NOT to use the affected tags,
but the bigger issue is that there is a problem. In many cases, we might personally
not use CFUPDATE but others writing code on servers we manage do...

I actually sent code to Christine @ Macromedia directly so as not to clog up the list
-- sorry for not noting that here. Your conclusions are the same as mine -- someone
broke cfinsert and cfupdate in CFMX 6.1 as regards usernames/passwords. Right now, I'm

FREE CFMX 6.1 Installation Support is Available!

2003-08-14 Thread David Schmidt
Damon Cooper wrote:

>Just a reminder:
>http://www.macromedia.com/support/programs/self/coldfusion/installation.html
>We anxiously await your installation support requests!
I think it's great that MM offers free installation support, the problem is that a lot
of folks run into issues right AFTER installation. The MM definitions are:

Installation
Macromedia defines installation as the process in which the product installation
program is extracted from a CD, diskette, downloaded executable, or network drive onto
a single computer's hard drive, and the setup programs is run to completion in
accordance with the authorized installation instructions. A completed installation is
determined by the successful first run of the Macromedia application.

AND

ColdFusion Server and ColdFusion Express
Unable to successfully run the 'Test your ColdFusion Installation' utility (ColdFusion
5 and older only)
Unable to launch the ColdFusion Administrator page.

So, in many peoples' cases (ie, datasources not working) the free installation does
not apply. The MM forums and this mailing list work well for general stuff. I'm
impressed with the fact that MM employees are active in both the forums and in most
mailing lists.

Hopefully Christine and I will be able to figure out this CFUPDATE issue with
passworded MS ACCESS datasources that is plaguing a lot of folks (me included)

Redsky-Still issues with CFINSERT and CFUPDATE.

2003-08-10 Thread David Schmidt
Angel Stewart wrote:

We are experiencing similar weirdness with CFMX 6.1 and MS Access DSNs -- but ONLY
when the datasources are passworded and passed username/password at runtime (in the
tag). Strip away the database password in the MDB, set default username in the CFMX
administrator datasource admin and the errors go away. There appears to be a CFMX 6.1
-> SequelLink -> ODBC issue. Who do we report this to at Macromedia? This is a major
major major issue...

Anyone else out there with thoughts/feelings?

Re: Dynamic Checkboxes

Well, the isDefined statement would be a good thing to use here.

and then test for remove for processing (assuming you are processing it
inside the loop). By the way, I typically use conditional looping
instead of indexed looping for things like this. This way you don't
have to know how many records to start/end with. Here's how it goes...

Check and make sure that either: the addtoken=yes on the cflocation tag, or
the cfapplication tag is set to allow client cookies.

Re: CFTree and IE6 - broken and MM dont seem to be doing anything about it ..

2002-06-22 Thread David Schmidt

I know the feeling... cfgrid doesn't seem to work with any JRE except
1.3. I installed the latest (1.4) thinking that I'm doing my system a
favor so that IE can keep up with other sites, only to find that it
breaks them instead. Then of course there's that silly "This
certificate is invalid..." message when using the 1.3 version.

: Any suggestions as to the best way to do it? The app is for a user
to
: click the node in the CFTREE - it is one of 4853 and growing records
in a
: database of songs, and a user has to select one and insert it into a
radio

:
: There records are organised by artist and song, so on the CFTREE
system, the
: user clicks on the artist, and all the songs on the radio station's
library
: for that artist drop down, then the user clicks on the song name and
it adds
: all kinds of details to the station's run sheet, copyright/APRA
return, web
: site playlist etc.
:
: What other techniques do people use to repeatedly select records from

cfgrid and hrefs

2002-06-18 Thread David Schmidt

I have a cfgrid containing the results of a query. I want to make one
of the columns a hyperlink (more specifically, each cell in a column).
Here's the catch... I need to use the cell contents as a url variable
for the page that I want to go to. For example, say I have a column
called "cid". I want to generate something like somepage.cfm?cid=5.

Is there a way to use the query's results inside the cfgridcolumn tag or
something? The only thing I can think of is getting sql to concactenate
my somepage.cfm?cid= and the number 5 using the AS statement (of course,
I haven't tried that yet). I am wondering if there is an easier way.

Thanks in Advance,

David Schmidt

Help Please - Having trouble with cferror

2002-05-24 Thread David Schmidt

Hey all, I'm having a bit of a brain fart here. I want to have a particular
site send the details of the error message when a message occurs. The plan
I have is this, but it doesn't seem to be working.

\root\Application.cfm (contains a cferror tag, type="exception"
mailto="myemailaddr" template="errors/errorhandler.cfm" ...)
\root\errors\Application.cfm (just holds a comment);
\root\errors\errorhandler.cfm (contains code to loop over the error object
if it exists, putting the messages in a cfmail tag)

I've been able to use cf code in an error template before (think I was
tinkering with it some time ago, can't find the code).

Anyone have an idea on what I might be missing?

Thanks All

Does anyone know how I can strip the base href that is being generated by my

using cflock with scope vs name

Is there a benefit to use the name= attribute rather than the scope=
attribute in a cflock statement. What is recommended?

Yes, but compared to the performance of MS Access how does it do? I'm just talking
performance, not administration.  There are
admin tools out there for the front end.

CF MX, J2EE, and the directory structure...

2002-05-15 Thread David Schmidt

Hi all,

Anyone know what the impacts of CFMX being J2EE compliant will have on the code
directory structure. I understand that the J2EE
specification says some things about a directory structure for the WAR files, but how
does this affect my cf pages. For
instance, say I've come up with a structure that keeps everything but images and a
central index.cfm page out of the webroot.
It is a fusebox sort of thing... enough said. Will that code run on CFMX and still
meet the J2EE specfication?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

David

Automatic Read Locking in CF5

2002-05-14 Thread David Schmidt

So that I am straight, and sure there are no bugs that will mess me up...

Is it ok to use CF5's "Automatic read locking" for application/session
scoped variables, provided that I manually lock any shared scope variable
"cfset" statements?

For your convenience (or irritation - ), I've included the text from
the administrative panel:

No automatic checking or locking: This is how ColdFusion worked in 4.0.1. It
is the responsibility of the developer to protect variables with the CFLOCK
tag. If variables are not locked, data corruption may result, which may lead
to server instability.

Full checking: ColdFusion automatically checks all shared variable scope
access to ensure that it is properly locked. If a variable is not properly
locked, an error will be thrown. Note this form of lock checking should be
applied only to applications that use the SCOPE attribute of the CFLOCK tag
to specify locks, not the NAME attribute. If you have specified the NAME
attribute, ColdFusion will throw an error on any variable accessed within
the locked block if full checking is applied on the scope of the variable.

Automatic read locking: ColdFusion checks whether shared variable scope
writes are locked and automatically locks shared variable scope reads. If
ColdFusion encounters shared variable scope writes that are not locked, an
error will be thrown.

Thanks for the help!

cfsavecontent

2002-05-09 Thread David Schmidt

Does using cfsavecontent cause excess overhead / memory usage on the server
during a page request? I suspect that it would set thisTag.generatedContent
to null, which is fine for after the end tag is encounted. But the question
really is "Does the start tag cause a new variable to be created, containing
the contents of the wrapped code as it processes? Or is it simply copied to
the memory space after the content is completely generated?". Does anyone
have inside knowledge on this one?

Thanks,

Dave Schmidt

CF Wishlist

2002-05-01 Thread David Schmidt

Ok,

Have carefully considered what I want from CF, the most striking feature I
want to see is...

"Stop treating empty list items as null." That is a list of "3,5,,,3,2,2"
should have a length of 7, instead of 5. Doing this would nearly eliminate
the need for any field names like name="cost_#i#", since HTML sends back
"3,5,,,3,2,2" for duplicate text fields named "cost" anyways.

Ok, my turn

1) No more funky "dock-all" button for studio. Instead, fix it so that we can
re-order the tabs on our resource windows to our
liking.

2) Make CF smart enough to use "=" and "!=" in the cfif comparison statements. This
shouldn't be that difficult, should it?

This is indeed correct. I've got the quickbooks --> my application about
90% completed, without any problem except that there are some
inconsistencies with the data. Unfortunately, quality of information out of
my application will only be as good as the quality of the data going into
it.

Also, I've seen the SDK and it doesn't look like it is complete yet. There
seem to be some elements missing. QuickBooks has created a XML
implementation called qbXML (or qXML), but it looks like it is still in its
infancy and requires creation of com objects to work with it.

Wouldn't a qbXML to WDDX function be fun?

Re: client cookies - strategy question

2002-04-15 Thread David Schmidt

I would just require that they have cookies on, and exclude putting cfid/cftoken in
the url. I guess they could share the
cfid/cftoken cookie, but you could do some ipaddress checking/monitoring to watch for
people sharing cookies (not 100% accurate,
of course). If too many different ip addresses (speaking of the first the octets -
234.100.130.xxx) are used for the same login
in a set period of time, you could disable the account.

Other considerations include the data stored in the client variables. If the only
information stored is their login status,
then I think that there isn't a problem sharing client vars among apps. However, if
there is other information stored, you
should separate them. One day, you will be coding on application 'A' and you will
mistakingly use the same variable name that
application 'B' is using. That could get ugly.

Re: Javascript - Remove an option from the select

Thanh,

I haven't tested this yet, but it may give you some idea...

add a function for onClick to the select tag. Pass 'this' to another function ie...
onClick="doRemove(this);"

doRemove(selectBox){
var selectedItem = selectBox.selectedIndex;

for(i = selectedIndex; i < selectBox.options.length; i++){

newvalue=selectBox.options[i+1].value;
newtext = selectBox.options[i+1].text;
selectBox.options[i].value = newvalue;
selectBox.options[i].text = newtext;

if(i=selectBox.options.length){
selectBox.options.length = selectBox.options.length - 1;
}

}

Re: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-11 Thread David Schmidt

Ah, that would do it! I'm gonna have to file this one away for the memory banks.
Great post. I think in that case, you would
NOT want to pass around cfid/cftoken in the url, right?

RE: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-11 Thread David Schmidt

That would be very curious if that worked. As I recall, the client variable
database doesn't have a field for recording the ipaddress. I'd suspect that
cookies are not being set properly, or that they don't match the token being
passed around in the url/forms.

I forget, are you running clustered / balanced db servers, or cf servers? I
know this is a dumb question, but your not trying to balance client
variables across datasources, right? Multiple cf servers pointing at a
single client variable storage works, but I have no idea how one could
possibly use multiple db servers for client variables. Again, probably a
really dumb question.

RE: DevComm - Opinions wanted

2002-04-11 Thread David Schmidt

The tool records any form or url variables sent to get the page in the first
place (ie, you came from template "A" to template "B" via form post. This
is done to ensure that it can reload the page you are commenting on
(template "B") when you click the devcomm submit button. In other words,
pressing the devcomm submit button emulates the action of template "A".

On a side note, I use this tool mainly during the prototype/mockup phase.

Re: CF - Problem with missing Form Data

2002-04-10 Thread David Schmidt

You don't have a cflocation in there someplace do you? Perhaps in your action page?
If not that, you should try doing a
#form.fieldnames# in your action page (at the top), just to make
sure you are in fact getting the
fieldnames.

Re: Suggestion for a good message forum to add to our CF SITE

2002-04-10 Thread David Schmidt

Ultimate Bulletin Board by Infopop systems is great! It's a perl (not cf, sorry), but
I've integrated it very well.  I don't
know, however, about the database issue, since it uses flat files. It runs about
$200-$300, and only takes about 20 minutes to
setup.

Re: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-10 Thread David Schmidt

AH! Now we get to a subject... I have had times where I had to scope my local
variables to keep them from getting mixed with
client variables, particularly when working with arrays...

For example,

I make an array, serialize it, stuff it into a client variable called "client.myarray"
Later, I deserialize it (on a new page call), the deserialized version is called
"myarray"

Then I do some operations on the myarray variable (add, edit, whatever)

Then I try to reserialize "myarray" and stuff it into wddx client.myarray

Now, the next time I try to deserialize it, it says it is not a wddx, or it is
otherwise corrupt.

What happens is when you try to reserialize myarray, it is actually reserializing
"client.myarray"

The lesson - Always scope your local variables, especially if you are using them to
interact with client vars.

David

Hi all,

If you downloaded the devcomm tool from the macromedia exchange, and have had a chance

comments and suggestions. If not, and you would like to contribute, here is the link
again. It's something along the lines of

Re: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-10 Thread David Schmidt

Are you using clustered datasource servers, cf server, or both? Also, verify you are
in fact setting the client variables. I
would run a test page that sets a client variable, and then locate to another page
that displays it, along with the
cfid/cftoken. Do a manual lookup in the database(s) for that cfid/cftoken pair and
make sure the data is there and everything
matches. When troubleshooting, go one step at a time, and document everything.

Re: Client Variable Scrabble

2002-04-10 Thread David Schmidt

First, double check that all of your cfapplication tags specify the same client
datasource. Make sure none are using
"Registry". I know you said you are using a database, but just to be sure...

Second, are the users using IE6 perhaps? I've heard some problems that IE6 has with
cookies at times.

Just a few thoughts. If I think of anything else, I'll let ya know.

Good Luck,

Dave

I actually do this because I often have some additional processing that
takes place between the query statements. An example might be where I
update a structure to contain a max ID that I retrieved for one of the
inserts. If there is some other problem in other logic, cftransaction won't
catch it. Another thing I might do is retry something once or twice if the
error happens to be a db connection timeout. Helps avoid sending the
"please retry" message back to the user. This requires me to catch the
error type.

Whoops, This should be correct. Sorry for the mis-code. :)

Robert,

I generally use cftry/cfcatch in conjunction with cftransaction. This
allows you to roll back if errors are encountered. The general outline is
this:

some sql...

some sql...

   Set it to false if there was an error...

 Success!!!

 Failure!!!

RE: CFWDDX example needed

2002-03-28 Thread David Schmidt

I don't know if this could be a problem for you, but I have had experience
when not scoping a local variable, the array append function might be
grabbing the client variable (wddx packet). I see that you have
client.cartitems and just cartitems. Scope the local one to the variables
scope and refer to it that way.

Here's the code I've written so far in my attempt to use WDDX to pass around
an array on a clustered server ... where I'm stuck is with getting the array
out of the packet and appending to it. (more comments after the code):

cart = ArrayNew(1);
item = StructNew();
item.itemEmployersID = '#client.CART_ID#';
item.itemName = '#form.ItemName#';
item.itemQuanity = '#quanity#';
item.itemPrice = '#form.Price#';
item.itemCategoryID = '#form.Category_ID#';

CartItems = ArrayAppend(cart, item);

item = StructNew();
item.itemEmployersID = '#client.CART_ID#';
item.itemName = '#form.ItemName#';
item.itemQuanity = '#quanity#';
item.itemPrice = '#form.Price#';
item.itemCategoryID = '#form.Category_ID#';

CartItems = ArrayAppend(cart, item);

Right now I'm getting an error at line 79: CartItems = ArrayAppend(cart,
item);

Parameter 1 of function ArrayAppend which is now "YES" must be an array

So I'm not sure how I get an array again and then append to it.

H.

Re: preventing two or more users editing a page?

2002-03-28 Thread David Schmidt

You can read descriptions of this below, but here it is...

1) create an application variable containing two elements.
a) Page being edited (cgi.script_name)
b) Person that is making the edit.

2) set the application variable to timeout at about 10 minutes.

> We want to prevent person A spending 30 minututes making
> changes, person B comes in, makes a single change (and waits),
> after person A saves, person B saves (and all changes that were
> made by person A are now lost).

Two things you can do here..
1) create an application array that holds the list of pages that are
currently being edited... Hmmm... you might need an application variable
for each page instead. (see second set of comments for the next problem).
I think each application variable will also need a "by whom" identifier so
it can restrict edit to one person.

2) create a datasource with a list of all the pages that can be edited and
place a yes/no type field in there that says when it is locked.

>
> The problem is on how to release the "lock" on a page,
> if the user just closes the browser (or loses the connection

you can set the application variable's timeout to a small number, say 10
minutes. If the page is re-requested by the same user, then the timer gets
reset for another 10 minutes. If not, it times out, releasing the lock.

Just set the length of wrapping in Outlook to more than 80 characters
and you'll be fine when pasting URLS.

Options> Mail Format>Internet Format

And go to Plain text Options and increase from 76 to ...well..whatever
you like. There is an upper limit though.
And it does make your emails look a bit odd.

editor (even an email editor like Outlook) as a hyphen just being used to
break up a set of syllables. Perhaps they should think about replacing the
"-" with a "_" when creating UUID's. After all, then you could use them for
directory names, urls, or whatever you wanted.

sigh, yet another good reason why people shouldn't use UUID's for ID &
urls, they convey no useful
information and they are also 10 times too long!
