RE: Best Chat Solution

2000-04-08 Thread Gregory Weiss

I am currently developing a chat component for a portal site that uses an
excellent chat component from WebMaster called Conference Chat. It was very
easy to use and their interactive support helped us with any questions we
have. It runs as a service on your Server and also can serve as a Web
Server (not that you would use it) It requires some tweaking, but once
youget th ehang of it, it should be what you need.

www.webmaster.com - conference chat. 1.7.6 or 1.8

I need to add a chat facility to a site - something I have not done before.
What is the best and easiest one to implement? I cannot find any on the
Allaire site. The only normal chat facility I found had broken links.

RE: Detect if JS is Enabled

2000-04-10 Thread Gregory Weiss

That sounds like a good way to do it, but how do you read a cookie in CF
that was not written in CF. I didn't know you could do that.

Can you set a cookie with an ASP page and read it in CF using the same
method?

Very interested to know.

What I sometimes do is set a cookie using JavaScript and then try to read
it with CF.

RE: Stock ticker

2000-04-10 Thread Gregory Weiss

I think the issue comes down to if its costing Yahoo or NOT for the content.
If they are paying for the content, but we are then pulling from them for
free, I'd say that is illegal because they have bought the right to that
Data FEED (not necessarily the info). If the person is providing the data
for free, either to Yahoo, or for us to gather directly, I would say we
would all be in the clear. So we should find this out, but we are
definitely interested in getting a fully functionally CF available Stock
Ticker for our production web sites.

Yes, but in the case of Stock Quotes, they are not Yahoo's content. Yahoo is
syndicating this information from the stock market. I understand the line of
thinking here, but I just want to play devil's advocate for a minute. Who
owns the rights to stock market quotes? In the end, all sights are
syndicating the data. If I pulled Yahoo's financial forecast for the future
of a particular stock, I could see how that might be an infringement, but
just the latest stock prices? I'd be interested in the legal argument
here...

I would assume that any tag that takes content and repurposes for another
web site w/o permission of the original web site would be illegal. Of
course, this reminds of the conversation about discovering someone stealing
your graphics by using http://www.yourserver.com" and replacing
the graphic with something a bit embarassing. You could do the same thing
here if you find that someone is syndicating your content w/o your approval.

Of course, I'm not a lawyer.

RE: CF and COM

2000-04-13 Thread Gregory Weiss

We are in the VERY beginning stages of development, so I couldn't begin to
give you that information. We really were interested right now at learning
specifically how to integrate COM and objects into Cold Fusion. We've been
messing around fairly successfully with some standard VB and C++ objects
that we currently utilize in some of our ASP applications. It seems so far
that the integration and application is working well. As we go further, and
I learn more, I will post more information about code samples, and COM/CF
sources to the listserv. In the mean time, GET BEN FORTA'S BOOK!! Advanced
Cold Fusion development, and check out the following web sites:

http://www.katungroup.com/coldfusionlinks2.htm
http://www.katungroup.com/spectra.htm

and

http://www.intrafoundation.com/ has some fine examples with source code in
C++

My guess is that this going to continue to be a VERY HOT TOPIC (especially
with DCOM and now Windows 2000 COM+ model) in the future.

Good luck,

Greg

RE: What happened to this list?

2000-04-24 Thread Gregory Weiss

This is one of the most disgusting professional acts I have ever
encountered, and the person who did that should not only be banished from
this list, but should be sought out by the development community as well and
'Boycotted'. I mean, I wouldn't want a guy like this work with me OR for
me. I have enjoyed nearly all the conversations on this list and recognize
that the list is for elementary as well as challenging questions. In
addition, the list has allowed to be develop contacts for questions should I
need assistance, no matter how trivial. I'd really like to know who that
person was that did this and bring him to justice. I thought the days of
Sabotaging Lab-Experiments were left behind me in College. Guess not.

Try this one...

Recently I posted a question I had to the list
and no one responded. Not a big deal, everyone
has a life. Today the owner of the company I
work at brought me a copy of an email he
recieved from someone on this list... it
basically said that the programmer he had hired
was unable to accomplish a minor task like the
one I mentioned, and he had, out of the goodness
of his heart, searched out the company to offer
his skills should my company wish to 're-think
the current development staff'.

My boss reminded me that I should be careful of
the people I associate with, and left it at
that. Aren't I lucky!

maybe a central flame-post web site could be set up. anyone who receives
what they feel is a rude email, could send it to a moderator. then the

think twice about being an a**h*le if they realized that the programming

Everyone... please understand.

first... I just dropped my original box, and have been spending my time
getting windows 2000 up on this new one, hence I haven't had a chance to
read email.

second... I also would love to know the name of the person that did this.
However, my boss, fearing I would use certain dubious skills to 'rip' that
persons connection from the internet as we know it, has chosen to show me
the email, sans originators name. So at this point in time I am as much in
the dark as to his identity as anyone here.

Trust, that if and when I do find out, I will splatter his name across every
venue I can possibly imagine... starting of course with this news list.

Marcus

RE: WAP and WML...

2000-04-24 Thread Gregory Weiss

Do either of you guys or anyone else have a list of good WAP/WML sites,
using or not using Cold Fusion. I'd love to learn more about this
technology, and its obviously going to be important to everyone else soon as
well. I'd like to make the first contribution:

http://www.anywhereyougo.com
http://www.bluetooth.com

These are excellent places to start, and obviously, any wireless
carrier/manufacturer is good as well (Nokia, Ericsson, Qualcomm, Motorola,
etc..)

Look forward to hearing from everyone.

I'm putting together a WML/email application using CF, and I've got a
question about compatability -

I'm using the Phone.com developer's kit and SDK to test my stuff. How do I
know if this app will work on phones that don't use Phone.com's service? Is
there a more generic SDK out there I can use?

May all be stupid questions, but thought I'd check...

Gregory :
are you using CFFILE to upload the files you want to count?
If so are you keeping track of the uploaded fileName's in a Database?
If so, you could just getmaxID.Max_ID

Hope that helps you.

RE: What happened to this list?

2000-04-26 Thread Gregory Weiss

Sorry to hear that, Judith. I think of myself as an inventive, intermediate
programmer, but hardly a guru. I need as much help as I can get with all
the projects. And I try to recipricate that help to all involved. More
than that, however, I've used the list to start a lot of interesting topics
(COM, XML, WAP/WML, etc...). And all of those discussions have been
invaluable in terms of the resources then have given me for further research
and understanding. My take is, people should judge you by the person you
are. Character, more than technical skills, is really often what gets the
JOB done. If they don't understand that, its their loss.

If this upsets you, I don't suppose you want to hear about the Cold Fusion
development firm who told one of my clients that I was incompetent to do
their project because I posted to this list. And I've never even posted
questions, just answers.

RE: File Attachment

2000-04-28 Thread Gregory Weiss

Yes,

This is true. Whenever an attachment is called into an email, a temporary
file is created that is your attachment, and that file is then attached to
your outgoing email. Thus, the specific call "C:\'Anything'" won't work. I
use inFusion Mail Server, so I don't know exactly how the MIMEATTACH
attribute works (Ie: What you should do to rectify your problem), but now
you have some more information with which to come up with a solution.

Hope this helps.

I created a simple email form which includes an . When I submit the form I receive an error stating:

MIMEATTACH

An invalid file name (C:\test.txt) was specified in the MIMEATTACH
attribute. Please verify that this file exists and that the ColdFusion
service has the privileges required to access it.

My host tech support states that file attachments must be temporarily
located on the server to send via an email attachment.

Is this true? Does someone have experience with email MIMEATTACH?

RE:

2000-05-01 Thread Gregory Weiss

I've had this problem many times. A solution, that probably isn't the most
elegant, is to change that field in Access to a Text field and insert you
date field as a string. Change your code to the following:

This way, you don't have to worry about Access Date Format compatibility,
and that line of code should ensure all values entered into that field are
Dates in the format you want. I have done this many times and it has worked
well. There is also a DATE field in Access, but I forget exactly what the
format is for that field. Using my option should work fine as a workaround.
