Re: CF, Ajax and Autocomplete Problems

Hi,

I may also be missing something here, but why are you opening a cfsilent and
then closing it straight away?

cfsilent
/cfsilentcfsetting enablecfoutputonly=yes.

The very last line of code has a closing cfsilent with no opening tag.

Hey Allpassing this along for a co-worker.

Hello All -- I am working on a database driven website that can access
individual records with a URL like this:
http://www.domainname.com/index.cfm?pg=listing_detailsid=83hit=1popup=0preview=1

In order to make the URL more SEO friendly, we are using a URL handler
that lets us structure the URL this way:
http://www.domainname.com/index.cfm/pg/listing_details/id/83/hit/1/popup/0/preview/1

By removing the ? and symbols, we make the URL easier for search
engines to navigate. Now, the SEO company is suggesting that we
shorten the URL right down to the following:
http://www.domainname.com/83/

I've seen many sites use more human readable URLs like the above or like
so:
http://www.domainname.com/gardentools

Which would take you to the garden tool category of a data driven web
catalogue (instead of explicitly passing the category ID via the URL).

TIA

Cheers

Hi,

Thread seems to have gotten a bit sidetracked (but still funny).

I haven't used any of these products in a while, but it does seem like Galleon
also fits the bill.

Demo site:
http://www.coldfusionjedi.com/forums/

Would have to agree with Matt. Something the same as VBulletin would be nice
for CF. What I really want to see is an application that brings a lot of this
together (blogs, wikis, forums, common security model etc), similar to products
like Microsoft Community Server.

I was looking at writing something to bring some of Ray Camden's products
together, but they are all written very differently (e.g. Canvas uses
ColdSpring, whereas BlogCFC doesn't rely on any other frameworks etc).

Have a good Christmas everyone.

Cheers

Re: Database vs. Verity Search

2007-12-11 Thread Mark Picker
Ok, it would appear from the few replies that I may have missed something with
the searching of customx fields :) Might have to reread the doco a bit closer.

Still seems strange to me that you can't search the title, but that may just be
me.

To be honest I hadn't even thought about searching the site using SQL rather
than Verity, but I think it might take more work than trying to get Verity to
do what I want to do (due to some of the things FarCry does for me if I use
Verity), however I'm not 100% sure of that and is something I might have to
investigate if I can't get anywhere with Verity.

Geoff, I'm using ColdFusion 8 (Standard) on Win2003, IIS6 and MSSQL2005.

I might have to have a bit more of a talk with you about specific details of
how you did the Tax Institute page, as it does seem to be along similar lines
to what I need to do. Only difference I need to filter about 10x more options.
I think we still have some development credit with you :)

I have a 6am start tomorrow (and it's already getting near midnight) to attend
a meeting in Orange, but I'll have a bit more of a play when I get back.

No doubt more questions to come :)

Have a good evening/day everyone.

Cheers
Mark

Database vs. Verity Search

2007-12-10 Thread Mark Picker
Hi,

(sorry if this post appears twice, having problems with the submission page and
our firewall)

I’m looking for other peoples opinion on searching via a database vs. Verity
searches.

I’m building new search pages for our course information system, with the end
result being website and course information results being combined (if
required) or filtering the results based on things like, course information
only, campus location, course type e.g. mainstream, application only courses
etc.

Currently the course information search pages are different to the site search.
Course Information searches an MSSQL database whereas the site search uses a
couple of verity collections (via FarCry).

The Verity engine is a little more limited than what I originally thought, for
example: you can only search the contents of the body, not the custom1, 2, 3
and 4 fields or the title field. I did have a look at using the new Category
feature, but aside from it still being too limited (by the amount of fields I
possibly need to filter by) it’s considerably slower to search than when not
using categories. Using a small sample of 1250 records, searching without
categories took an average of 150ms, when restricting the same search using
categories it took on average 3500ms.
So where I’m up to now is either

1) Not using Verity for the course information and going back to searching
against the database. I could split the site search result page to display two
separated results, one based on the database (course info) and the other on the
verity collection (website). You then would select which set of results to
continue on with for page 2.

2) Building x number of verity collections for each type of course
information search (application courses, mainstream etc) and combine these when
searching. The would mean that the body of all these collections would have
identical information, which just feels wrong.

3) Attach the different types of filtering options (as keywords) to the
end of the body section with some type of marker to let me know from that point
on is filtering keywords and to strip them out before displaying the text on
the results page. I need to give this one a bit more thought, but this
doesn’t feel very future proof.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time.

Mark Picker

I recently purchased 25 related domains and I wish to create 25 simple 3-5
page CF web sites. Can anyone recommend a host that can do this with ONE
ColdFusion account that doesn't cost a fortune?

Aside from a SQL database, I don't need anything fancy since the sites will
basically be monetized/affiliate pages. Also, I have no preference with
regards to Linux/Windows.

Hi Andy,

Sorry about that, I think your right. I clearly didn't think about that point,
I'm so use to just pointing other domains at the same content. (Although I
suppose using the header info, you could still use domain aliases and just
change content based on domain name).

One thing I should have said before is, as good as the service is with
hostingatoz, I would be a bit hesitant to host an online business that relies
heavily on email. Their email issues from a couple of months ago (taking days
to be delivered, or getting bounced back on regular basis) do seem to be fixed,
but I would still try it for a little while before relying on it.

Is Che asking for aliases though? It sounds more like he's got 25 individual

These are 25+ unique domains. I can find a PHP/Linux solution... but I would
rather use CF since CF is what I am more familiar with. It seems kind of
absurd that most CF web hosts won't offer unlimited domains since bandwidth
is the main thing your are paying for.

Is CFIMPORT only on MX Enterprise?

2004-05-13 Thread Mark Picker
Hi,

I have just installed a new learning platform onto one of our testing
servers, running CFMX 6.1 Standard.Whenever I try to login to the platform
I get the following message:

A License Exception has been thrown
You tried to access a restricted feature for the Standard edition: CFIMPORT

Looking through support area of Macromedia site it would suggest (and by the
error message) that CFIMPORT is only available on MX Enterprise.

However if you look at the feature matrix on their site:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/whitepapers/pdf/6_1/cfmx61_fea
ture_comparison_matrix.pdf

At the top of page two it lists CFIMPORT as being in all versions of MX.Am
I misunderstanding something here or is the matrix just wrong?

Convert Complex data to string error.

2003-08-29 Thread Mark Picker
Hi,

I have some code that use to work fine under CF5. However since upgrading
one server to MX I keep getting the following error when trying to use one
particular variable:

Complex object types cannot be converted to simple values.

The variable holds some details about the URL that a product was selected
from. An example of the content is :

cat=26grouping=1grouptitle=ProductsPartID=151page=1title=Cooling%20Syst
emdo=action

I have discovered that MX treats this code as a structure. However I can't
seem to find an easy way to convert this back to a string so that it can be
inserted into a database field (as a string).

I found some details in the MX manual about using the cfml2wddx function to
convert to a string, but this brings back the text with the XML tags in it.

My other problem is that whatever function I use, the code needs to work in
both CF5 and MX

Does anybody have a simple method to convert this to a string type?

Cheers
Mark
