cf.Objective Pricing - Was: 'Conferences?'

2008-12-18 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
As an update, here is the cf.Objective() 2009 pricing breakdown:

Early Registration $549
Late Registration $679
2-Day Early is $499
2-Day Late is $549

Registration will open over the Holidays (next week). Earlybird
deadline occurs in March. Schedule will be posted roughly January 9.

Thanks,
Nic

I'll see if I can get some info since I know several of the organizers and

Re: Transposed Dates - Second Request

2008-04-15 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
Just a guess, but Guernsey is about 7 hours in the future (HMS in is EST
time zone). That means that entries during 7 hours of the day would be
a day behind. You will need to account for this and add a day during
those 7 hours only.

 3. Couple of forms with date entry (three fields day, month, year)
and then using createdate to put them together before saving.

When dates are entered into the Guernsey forms, they're getting
 transformed before being saved:

 04/20/1965 becomes 04/19/1965

It doesn't do it *all* the time - only *most* of the time. I discovered
this after writing a function to take the dates and *add* a day before
saving - which then saved as what was entered into the form. Except,
something it saves as the correct date, and sometime one day in the future.

I can find NOTHING to cause this - except it *has* to do with the time
difference between Guernsey and wherever the HostMySite server is. I say
*has to*, because I simply can't think of anything else.

Since I don't know why it's happening, have ZERO ideas for a solution.

 Anybody? Help!

structures which hold this information are now thread-safe) - no more
crashes because of locking. (5 year-old Yay!)

(Just kidding - we went straight from 4.5 to 7 so I know exactly where
 you're coming from.)

However you still may need to lock to protect your data for
application/design reasons (race-conditions for example). It's rare that
you'll need to lock whole scopes however and for the most part named locks
should provide all the utility you need without dragging performance.

preserveSingleQuotes(list)

 Good Morning,

I have a CF list of items with single quotes around them
(e.g., list = 'ABC', 'DEF', 'XYZ')

I am trying to use this list in a T-SQL statement using IN:

 SELECT *

 WHERE test-row IN (#list#)

The problem is T-SQL adds quotes and I end up with the following
 statement:

 SELECT *
 FROM test-table
WHERE test-row IN (''ABC'', ''DEF'', ''XYZ'')

Any idea how to stop these additional quotes?

 Thanks.

Re: Logout vs just closing the browser

2007-04-02 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
Using J2EE sessions when a user closes the browser does not clear the
memory used by the user's session. It will still remain as a valid
session until the session times out or the app is restarted. What it
does do is guarantee that the user will get a new session id when
returning to the site.

Nic

James Holmes wrote:
 Or just use J2EE sessions.

The initial question is about clearing the memory used by the session.
Without this, the memory taken up by a session remains allocated until
that session times out, regardless of whether a person has their
 browser open or closed.

 Les,

I've used this a number of times.

 cfif isdefined(cookie.CFID)
cfcookie name=CFID value=#cookie.CFID#
 /cfif
 cfif isdefined(cookie.CFTOKEN)
cfcookie name=CFTOKEN value=#cookie.CFTOKEN#

This basically copies the user session cookies back onto themselves,
but with no expiration date. This turns them into a session cookie,
which are destroyed when the browser is closed.

I've used 1.4.2_12 for some time now on production sites. It fixed some
memory issues they were having (this was still when Adobe was only
supporting to 1.4.2_09). Like Rick said though, Adobe does not support
past 1.4.2_11 officially, although some folks have been installing
1.4.2_13 with success during the time zone issues. The problem will
arise if you have Adobe support and you tell them you are running above
1.4.2_11. They will say they can't help you and it may take some
conversations before they move past that fact ;).

For multi server instance, you simply install the new JRE to a directory
in the filesystem. Then, open jvm.config in your bin directory and
point the java.home variable to the new path. Then, restart your cf

something out to share the site list back and forth to keep them in
sync. Let me know if this is something you are interested in. I expect
to get the site released tonight or tomorrow.

Show your support for CF - cfMaps.com

2007-02-28 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
I think this fits into the discussion over the last two days well (300k
CF devs and gotcf.com):

I've been putting together a community site for the last few weeks, and
it is finally ready to be released. The site is called cfMaps.com
http://www.cfmaps.com. Overall, it allows ColdFusion developers and
ColdFusion sites to be geocoded and placed on a map of the world. I
think I should be able to derive some pretty cool statistics in the long
run. Companies can also search by zip code or country to find a CF
developer.

Check out the About
http://www.cfmaps.com/index.cfm?event=main.showAbout page to see why I
put this together and get a bigger picture of what the site does. My
goal is to allow developers and managers to see how widespread
ColdFusion really is. If you are a CF developer, I hope you register
http://www.cfmaps.com/index.cfm?event=security.showUserForm. If you
have a ColdFusion site, I hope you register the site
http://www.cfmaps.com/index.cfm?event=website.showWebsite as well.

Re: How to get old MM Developers Resource Kits?

You can get the DFA from Simon Horwith (http://www.horwith.com). He has
made some updates too I believe.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of the DRK3 (developers

the DFA API, and am wondering if this is available anymore.
(I'm researching translation of csv files into XML.) As seen
 on Adobe's site at:
 http://www.adobe.com/devnet/logged_in/mchambers_newreleases.html

DFA: Data File Access (DFA) is a ColdFusion MX component and
a set of custom tags that lets you interact with an XML- or
comma-delimited file as if it were a database. Storing data
in flat files is always tempting because it is so convenient,
but often gets unwieldy and complex as your record sets grow
and your requirements change. DFA puts a simple, familiar tag
interface on top of XML or a comma-delimited file, letting
you retrieve data using Xpath or SQL.

I doubt these are available at all any more.

But if you have CSV files, you can easily convert them into query objects
using CFHTTP - your CSV file has to be web-accessible - then do whatever you
want with them. Honestly, it can't get much easier, although it strikes me
as something that might not perform so well in a high volume environment.

judgment, I posted several of Brian Simmons' CFMX Exam Buster test
questions to my site in order to demonstrate how my proof of concept

 his prior approval.

My intent was not to take credit for his work but rather to put some
content on the proof of concept site in order to demonstrate
functionality and to generate interest. However, intentions aside, this
egregious lapse in judgment was both wrong and hurtful; it has shaken
Brian's faith in the security of his hard work and intellectual property

Brian's CFMX Exam Buster software is quite fantastic and without it, I

this essential piece of software or Brian's efforts. It is a product
that I have recommended to many people (and will continue to do so) and
I hope that it continues to be upgraded with each new version of

In an effort of redemption and for various other concerns including
legalities and quality control, I have decided to take down my proof of

and I hope that with time, Brian can learn to forgive me for my actions
and that he will truly believe that my intentions were not malicious.

I also recognize that this display has tarnished my reputation and my

CF Exam Certification Study Gruop

2007-01-03 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
Would anyone be interested in attending a ColdFusion MX 7 Developer

http://www.adobe.com/support/training/certified_professional_program/cfmx7_developer.html

There would be no cost to attend (unless we all chip in for pizza or
something). I am thinking it would be a three night class located
somewhere near Rockville/Bethesda MD (anyone who is willing to donate or
suggest a location let me know!). We would be concentrating on the 4
primary sections of the Adobe ColdFusion MX 7 Developer exam
http://www.adobe.com/support/training/certified_professional_program/cfmx7_developer.html

(Application Development, Database Concepts, Client State Management and
Data Exchange) as well as discussing common hang ups and testing
techniques.

If I can get this set up via Adobe Connect, I will extend the invitation
to those not available to attend in person.

If you are interested, please send me your contact information

Re: CF and OOP - Controller

2006-12-30 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
If you are building a framework, your framework core should be the one
to convert the form and url scope into a struct within the framework's
datastore object. At that point, you can pass the datastore into each
controller upon instantiation. Since the object will be passed by
reference, it will pick up the form and url variables on submission.

HTH,

Nic

Precisely. That's a much better way of saying what I was trying to say.

I have a strong preference that CFC methods be passed the info they need as

arguments, rather than fishing it out of the air themselves. That makes
 it
very clear what inputs they expect, and makes them testable, becuase you
 can
easily feed each little piece disembodied test data outside the normal
 complexity of the real app.

Agreed wholeheartedly. That is precisely the reason I've been having the
argument with myself that I've been having.

For that to happen, you need some kind of app structure that gathers the

incoming data (typically including form and url scopes, maybe others), and
calls the requested method of the requested CFC. It can be very simple, or
 something more full-featured.

This is the part that I've been struggling with, but I *think* that it's
becoming much clearer to me after reading the replies to this thread. Which
is a plus, because sometimes you (read: I) sit and stare at the screen or
books for hours studying something and it just becomes a confusing mess
after awhile, given the variety of opinions on the topic-at-present.

Re: memory issue with session scope in custom tags?

2006-12-02 Thread Nicholas M Tunney
I posted a reply on their forum.

Andrew Grosset wrote:
InterestingI hope someone comes up with an answer.

 Andrew.

I just got the following advice in a HostMySite CF newsletter. Is there an
issue with session scopes in custom tags? I've received other coding tips

from them that make no sense or is just plain bad advice but not sure what

 to make of this.

 Coding Tip

Discover methods used by HostMySite's CFMX gurus to address your common
coding and performance issues. Stop by the Developers' Forum to discuss with
 fellow ColdFusion users.
Duplicate Your Session Scopes to Relieving Memory Issues

When you use custom tags to place exclusive locks around the session scope,
it causes ColdFusion service issues, which affects all users within a shared
environment. You can prevent these ColdFusion service issues by using a
common fix we use to fine tune our code:

Use a variable scope to remove the memory being used by the session scope
once the tag has completed it's necessary action.

 cflock timeout=45 throwontimeout=Yes type=READONLY scope=SESSION

 CFSET variables.LSess=Duplicate(session)

 /cflock

We would be replacing all references of session to variables.LSess and
copying the local copy of the structure back to the session scope.

 cflock timeout=45 throwontimeout=Yes type=EXCLUSIVE scope=SESSION

 CFSET session=Duplicate(variables.LSess)

 /cflock

If you have difficulty copying over structures in your local version to the
session scope, you can duplicate each key under the local session structure
over to the scope. Your final code would look similar to:

 cflock timeout=45 throwontimeout=Yes type=EXCLUSIVE scope=SESSION

 CFLOOP index=Key list=#StructKeyList(variables.LSess)#

 CFSET Session.#Key#=Duplicate(Evaluate( variables.LSess.#Key#))

 /CFLOOP

 /cflock

reflection for object inspection (think cfdump) , rule breaking (more
reflection stuff) and decompiling via my JODE example.

 Option 1.

There is only 1 product involved. A person could purchase one or multiple
amounts of the product. Then there will be a small delivery/postal charge.

I am thinking that I could capture all the information on the web site and
then just pass the information from the web site to paypal.

 Option 2

When a person wishes to purchase the product pass them to Paypal and all
 shopping is done on Paypal.

How have other people done this?

I would be interested to know the best (simplest approach) to take.

 Thanks in advance for feedback.

but what about non pounded variables

 password=#dbpassword#
  SELECT Child_ID, Firstname, sibs
  FROM tbl_children
  WHERE DispWithFamily = 1 and Availability = 1 AND sibs = cfqueryparam
 value=#form.sibs# cfsqltype=CF_SQL_INTEGER /
  ORDER BY sibs DESC

Would the query gain a speed benifit like this?
 cfquery name=ListFams datasource=#dsn# username=#dbusername#
 password=#dbpassword#
  SELECT Child_ID, Firstname, sibs
  FROM tbl_children
  WHERE DispWithFamily = cfqueryparam value=1 cfsqltype=CF_SQL_TINYINT

  AND Availability = cfqueryparam value=1 cfsqltype=CF_SQL_TINYINT /
  AND sibs = cfqueryparam value=#form.sibs# cfsqltype=CF_SQL_INTEGER /

hard to tell with only 400 records,,, but in a years time this table should
be upwards of 300,000 records so every bit of speed i can get...
