Cfimpersonate, Cfdirectory, MX
Back in the days of CF4 and 5 I used to use a cfdirectory wrapped in a cfimpersonate to have users supply passwords then have cf read network shares that they had access to on a file server. I know that I could have logged the CF service in as a user with permission (in fact I did that on another application) but this worked the best for shares that theoretically were supposed to only be accessed by their owner. I am at a loss as to how to do this (if possible) with the array of new security features in MX and 7. I am currently using jrun.security.NTAuth to authenticate my users, but still am not sure if I can or how to use user supplied credentials to access network resources. Any help that you could give or point me to would be greatly appreciated. RE: Uploading multiple files - not necessarily CF
Aren't there Flash solutions now? I used to use a JAVA applet at a previous position and remember the head ache of client computers having the wrong java version. We're a CF shop and I don't see a CF solution for this piece, but it needs to work with CF. Perhaps a Java applet? Maybe Flash? We'll certainly be using CF for the back-end processing of the files, but what is not desired is having the multiple html file form fields. This is for an intranet application with VERY tightly controlled browser and OS environments. Downloading a separate application is pretty much a non-starter; it needs to work in the browser window. JavaScript treat multiple checkboxes as an array, but a single checkbox is not an array. A quick goggle didn't turn me a up with an example but there should be plenty of examples out there of checking for this with JS. RE: Have A Client with A Specific Need. Read On to See If You're the Right CF Expert for the Job
I know I have gotten that error message before, either on 4.5 or 5. I found this after searching a little while - paraming a variable with a scope but without a variable name will cause "CFTempOnlyForSetVariableNeverUseThisNameInYourCFMLCode1223335654321 " when doing this in Coldfusion 5 or lower. - But if my memory serves me I seem to remember in our case it had to do with having multiple cfapplication tags execute on the same request. In that instance it was application.cfm including the application.cfm in the parent directory. This will cause, long page loads, terminated page loads, server crashes, weird error messages. Not sure if that is it, if that situation went with that error message. But I thought it might be worth mentioning. Jeff, You may want to use mappings in the cf administrator. Or if you put the include in the application.cfm and onrequestend.cfm files the includes will be done relative to the application.cfm file not the file that is called. I would say one of the 2 of those is the easiest. RE: Read directory
Assuming ColdFusion 5 or better you can indeed use the cfdirectory action list then a query of queries to compare the 2 result sets. Not sure exactly what comparison you are trying to do, but the below code will give you files common to both, files in fre that aren't in eng and files in eng that aren't in fre. select * from eng e, fre f where f.name = e.name select * from eng e where e.name not in ('#replace(valuelist(fre.name, ",", "','","all")#') select * from fre f where f.name not in ('#replace(valuelist(eng.name, ",", "','","all")#') Patrick McGeehan Applications Developer DIT #mcg# -Original Message- From: Asim Manzur [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 2:39 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Read directory I have two directories. RE: Folder Permission
Mike, I think the easiest way to do would be to do cfdirectory (action = ""> that is enclosed in a cfimpersonate tag. If the record count is 0 then the user doesn't have permissions. if it is 2 or more (entries for '.' and '..') then they have at least read permissions. Remember, if you haven't used cfimperosnate before, that the user will have to have rights to log on as a batch job and act as OS. RE: (I guess) Local App
Dick, I think the technology is pretty nifty and I didn't mean to suggest that it couldn't work. For many of the reasons Dave gave and my personal experience with access I thought that doing something "quick and dirty" even using access wizards would be an easier solution. Dave, Thanks for defending my position so eloquently. I had gone home for the evening. Greg, good luck with your project. One of the features is that an HTA runs with application privileges, not web-page privileges (even tho' the HTA is just a web page). This means that you can use _javascript_ to access any com object on the system. In your case that means you can create an HTML based form that would use the Excel com object to automatically create and fill out the Excel sheet (or create an XML file or whatever). RE: (I guess) Local App
The cfanywhere stuff looks cool but seems like a bit of work to get that rolling and the template may be to much for an easily importable spreadsheet. How many users will you have? You write the app in CF, providing a customized, application-specific GUI, using a browser -- just as you do now for any web app. Your users can run it on the desktop & store the data in a local db (with no connection to the Internet) Using, for example; BDJ2ee, Apache, Jetty, Cloudscape * You can make the entire app double-clickable (all of the above) just like any desktop app -- no necessity to type commands or run scripts from the command line. It doesn't cost anything for any of the software* It takes a very small footprint & runs quite efficiently (prolly smaller than Excel) When the Internet is available, the user clicks a button & the CF template (you write) xfers the data from the desktop db to Oracle, You have all the CF programming capabilities, you use for any other CF app (it's CFML, baby!) You have a single, familiar, language with which to write and maintain the programs, You have the reliability, ease of use, etc. to which you are accustomed. It is easy to deploy via download or CD. * Everything except CFMX/BD is free, open-source, proven & redistributable. You will need to get permission of the mfgr to redistro CFMX or BD -- lacking that you must dl & install a free trial version on each user's system, Dick _ [Todays Threads] [This Message] [Subscription] [Fast Unsubscribe] [User Settings] [Donations and Support]

How complex is the data being collected? If not too complex, why reinvent the wheel, have them collect the data in excel, and read the sheets in when they get back. Selling Tags and Apps (WAS: Free for non-commercial usage? Donationware?)
The talk yesterday about donation-ware and some posts by Claude Schneegans with links to cf tag store have prompted me to attempt to start my first thread. Over a year ago now I made a New Years resolution that I would start posting tags on either Macromedia exchange or sites like cftagstore. My thought was I could do some basic tags, apps for free, and others for a fairly cheap price. I could at worst have something else to put on a resume or in a portfolio and at best make some side money. I had/have a few tags and apps lying around in various stages of done-ness. I never seem to find the time to get any to the point that they are documented and ready for upload. Now over a year later, I am pretty happy with my job, not leaving in the foreseeable future, and am less worried about a portfolio builder but would still be interested in posting some side projects if there was at least a minimal return. I already have a second job and get paid an hourly rate for that, so even though some of my tags and apps are more fun to work on than the second job I have trouble justifying the time and effort. What have some of you experienced with trying to sell pre-packed tags and apps, aimed at other developers (so as not to get too, too far into support issues). I am sure some of my ideas are out there somewhere but I do have a few that I think are kind of unique. For example A project management app that asks for a location of a dev site or app (ftp, local, or unc) and a prod site or app (ftp, local or unc). It shows (prod files side by side with dev) mod date / times, highlights which is more recent, shows if a file is unique to just dev or just prod. It can push files forward, roll files back, and logs it all. A web app that is a scaled down version of studio for use when you aren't near a computer that has your dev tools. It lets you edit code online with line numbering, upload/download code, manipulate the directory structure, explore datasources, etc. A custom tag that takes a table name, and database type and draws a cf grid like html table that allows you to sort, update, add, delete info. And there are a few others. So I guess my question is two fold, what have any of you found in trying to sell on the side, specifically tags and apps aimed at other developers. And I know it is tough with out seeing any of them, but I guess the 3 offerings I mentioned above are what I would consider my "coolest" and most unique tags. I use all 3 almost every day for something or the other and so they are priceless to me. Do they sound like something other developers might want or need? Or should I stick with my day (and primary night job). Thanks for any and all feedback.
