Depending on the database you're using, there is some code possible, but not
for all databases.

For any kind of ODBC database, CFX_ODBCInfon is the sure way.

CFMX Memory Consumption

2004-05-18 Thread Robert Shaw
This is kind of a general question regarding CFMX and how it utilizes
memory. I know in CF 5 CF will consume the amount of memory it needs and
then hold onto it and reallocate it back and forth. How does CFMX handle
memory, the same way?

2 CFMX UPgrade Questions

2004-04-19 Thread Robert Shaw
Hi,
I am going to upgrade some of our CF 5 machines and we have a few questions
we thought the CF gurus on this list may be able to answer.

1. Can we upgrade from CF 5 to CFMX for J2EE and if so will this save our
settings and migrae them like a straight CFMX upgrade would?

2. I heard the built in JDBC drivers do not rely on the tsnames.ora file, is
this the case and will we need manually enter our SID name?

I have installed CFMX on a server with SunOne using multple instances of
SunOne (not mx like in j2ee). Is there a way for me to remove the
connectors for all instances and re-add them like with IIS?

Are you talking about the SunONE web server, or the SunONE application
server? If the former, you should be able to use the remove_all_connectors
batch file/shell script which should be somewhere in \cfusion\bin, I think.

Yes that is built into MX. It's so you can create an ODBC connection via
the ODBC control panel, then you use the ODBC Socket option and tell it
the name of the DSN you created in the ODBC Control Panel. It's used
when there is a Database that CF doesn't have a driver for. I am
currently using it for a Progress Database we have.

6.1 Install

2003-08-21 Thread Robert Shaw
I installed 6.1 and everything appeared to go smooth, however, the

http://localhost:80/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm on the server where MX is
installed returns a FILE NOT FOUND message. Opening IIS shows CFIDE and

selected the home directory for my web site to install these files under.
The home directory is on another drive. I'm wondering if there is a ini
file pointing to WWWroot as a default?

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

CFMX Pro 6.1 J2EE

2003-08-12 Thread Robert Shaw
I don't think I'm the only one finding the changes in the versions of CFMX
rather confusing so I thought I'd post for clarification on this. We have an
MX Pro license (upgraded from 4 I think). I just launched the installer and
I see the options for J2EE. It looks like I can install this but with my Pro
license what will happen? I just want to make sure I'm correct in thinking
that Pro licenses will not be eligible for the J2EE options and only
Enterprise customers will.

Re: query question

2003-06-12 Thread Robert Shaw
Thanks for the responses. I know which query it is so fixing it is in the
works, one of my colleagues is also looking into it. I still don't think it
makes sense that the query going to a database on a different server woud
cause CF to spike, I'd think it would cause the database server's cpu to
spike. But if anyone has any other feedback as to why this would hapen and
if it is expected behavior we'd appreciate the input.

TIA,
Rob

We have watched the web-server spike up to 100 percent utilization on
cumbersome queries before (afterward the page was modified to reduce the
number of results returned). Im not sure if this is supposed to happen but
it did.

cfftp

2003-06-11 Thread Robert Shaw
Good Morning Everyone,
I am trying to use cfftp to put files on my ftp server and it is failing
with a very non-descript error:

ErrorCode 0
ErrorText An exception occurred when performing the FTP putfile operation

In my log I see a permissions error:

An exception occurred when performing the FTP putfile operation. The cause of
this exception was
that: c:\cftptest.txt (Permission denied)

I can put this file using ftp from the command line on the same machine but
not from within CFMX. Is there something that CF needs opened up to be able
to put the file? How does it know it's coming from CF and not the command
line ftp and why is it behaving differently? I can open the connection and
do a ListDir with no issue.

query question

2003-06-11 Thread Robert Shaw
Hi All,
It appears a certain query of mine is causing our CPU to spike. We're
working on the query but what is strange is that it will hose CF. It was my
uderstanding that CF passes the connection off so I would think it would be
normal for the database server's CPU to spike but not for CF to cause the
webserver CPU to spike. If we kill the query it immediately goes back down.
Does this sound right? I have not seen this happen before and am questioning
if my logic is off.

RE: Very unsatisfied with Macromedia's support attention ...

As for feeling like I'm being singled out it took 3 months to get my
Dev environment working correctly under CFMX, as everyone on this list knows
- there are hundreds of messages about my issues. And no help from
Macromedia then. Not even a message. Not one.

They probably didn't respond because this is not a Macromedia web site or an
official Macromedia support avenue. So I don't think you can really blame
them for not responding to every person who posts out here.

Just my $.02 :o

Oracle Thin Client

2003-03-28 Thread Robert Shaw
Another question regarding this, if the Thin Client does not use the tsnames
file is there any other connection, other than OCI, that does?

Morning,
Does anyone know if the thin client (Type IV) uses the tnsnames file for SID
to IP resolution? We've been looking at OCI since we know this does but it
doesn't appear to be the best option.

TIA,
Rob

If you have access to the machine, and its Windows, bring up the task
manager (right-click on the time display) and see how many windows are in
the CPU Usage History pane of the Performance tab. 1 window shows there per
processor.

Let give you more details

Client Variables Best Practices

2. Is it best practice to have a separate datasource for each environment

3. Is there a method of calculation to see what size the table space should

I'm not sure about leaks as in, CF continually soaking up RAM that it's not
using. I've never noticed this happening on a 4.5 server. The only leaky
issues I'm aware of using CF 4.5 are still present in 5.0 and that's shared
scope variable corruption which I've heard can crash servers if it's really
bad. Afaik, make sure you know your cflock techniques and you should be
fine. Jim Davis has a good article on the subject on

Subject: CFMX Server Crash #4 for the day..

Well, our CFMX server just crashed for the 4th time today. I've had the
perfmon open all day and have been watching the traffic. We had an average
of 12 connections when the running requests started to grow and grow. As I
mentioned in my previous post, there were 3 running requests that had not
finished for hours. As far as the number of CFMX request, as I was watching
it, it never went above 6. This really means there was a max of 3 running
requests (on top of the 3 that were already dead), it would go up to 6 and
then back down to 3. Those 3 threads weren't going anywhere.

Then I noticed that the running requests was growing incrementally, so I
tried to make an HTTP request to the serverand it did not respond. I
checked the running requests, and there was one more. The server was DEAD,
HUNG, FINISHED - KAPUT.

The Perfmon counter restarted jrun when the running requests reached 10,
and the server came back to life. Thank you Lee Fuller for this temporary
fix.

What is Macromedia doing about this? CFMX is not ready for production. If
your sales of CFMX are not what you expected, there's a fairly obvious
reason why. I certainly, based on my experience, would not recommend (and I
think anyone running CFMX would agree) anyone to switch to CFMX anytime
soon. Unless you have plenty of spare time to baby sit your server.

Brook

CFMX Oracle

2002-11-12 Thread Robert Shaw
Hi,
I've installed CFMX (upgrade from 5) and can not connect to the Oracle 8.1.7
database using the native cold fusion driver, OCI, or the thin type. The
error is:

Connection verification failed for data source: admin_dept_dba
[]java.sql.SQLException: SQLException occurred in JDBCPool
while attempting to connect, please check your username,
password, URL, and other connectivity info.
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException

your username, password, URL, and other connectivity info.

So my questions are:
1. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for connecting to Oracle
2. Is there a recommendation for using Native, OCI or thin?

TIA,
Rob

Subject: Server Hanging

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a Macromedia document that outlines best
practices for the CF Administrator - like actual setting numbers? Our server
is hanging, our admin is on vacation, and I'm trying to see what my steps
should be for troubleshooting and if tweaking the CF Admin would help.

Thanks,
Rob

Recipe Application Wanted

2002-10-29 Thread Robert Shaw
Hi,
My wife has this paper disaster area of recipes and I'd like to make her an
app where she can input them and search, etc. Does anyone know if there are
any CF apps (opensource) alrady around that do this? I just don't want to
code anything that's already out there!

TIA,
Rob

Migrating CF 5 apps to CFMX for Jrun

2002-10-15 Thread Robert Shaw

Hi,
Has anyone migrated their applications from CF5 to CFMX for Jrun? Just
looking for any real-life experiences to pass on to my boss. I also noticed
in the docs for CFMX they have a migrating 5 apps to CFMX and the docs for
CFMX for J2EE don't have this section. Does anyone know if you can just
follow the docs for CFMX or if the code analyzer is different?

TIA,
Rob

repost: cfcontent trys to download

2002-10-08 Thread Robert Shaw

Hi,
I have two servers, on one cfcontent acts as expected it browses the file
I'm pushing. On the other it tries to download it as the .cfm page. Any
clues as to why this would happen. Im looking at all of the differences of
the machines and can't find much.

TIA,
Rob

Websphere version

In the CFMX for Websphere Docs it states version 4.03 is supported, can
someone please confirm that any versions higher, i.e. 4.04 or 5, are
definitely _not_ supported.

cfcontent trys to download

2002-10-02 Thread Robert Shaw

Hi All,
I've got two machines production and dev, on Dev everything is fine when
using cfcontent, in Production the same code trys to download the .cfm file
in the Save As dialog box. Any thoughts on what might make this happen? I
can't see any noticeable differences.

RE: Locking

2002-09-30 Thread Robert Shaw

Thanks for the advice, Isaac. One other question, can you see any reason why
it would be bad to set all my application variables in application.cfm and
then use an if test to prevents further cfsets? What do you think of this
technique or are there better ones? My colleague and I are having this
debate currently.

Rob

It depends how much data is in your application scope and how much of it
will be relevant on any given page... I'm inclined to think that you won't
want to shot-gun it quite that much, although you may not have to go too
much further... Instead of duplicating the entire application scope, try and
figure out what information will be specific to a given request in the
application.cfm, for instance, if this is an app which requires a login and
user session information is stored in the application scope, you might copy
just the user session structure for the current user and not the whole array
or structure containing all logged in users.

For the remaining variables, you might loop through the application
structure and copy only those which are simple values, i.e.

cflock scope=application timeout=30 type=readonly
cfset request.user = application.user[urltoken]
cfloop item = x collection=application
cfif issimplevalue(application[x])
cfset request[x] = application[x]
/cfif
/cfloop
/cflock

I've had good luck with a similar application architecture on CF5.

Hi,
I'm upgrading from CF 4.0.1 to CF 5 and I have read that
locking changed
from 4.0 to 4.5. I'm currently using application variables
and wanted some
thoughts on this:
Does anyone see any issues with moving all of my
application variables to
the request scope in application.cfm using:
cflock SCOPE=Application Timeout=30 Type=Readonly
  cfset request=duplicate(application)
/cflock

So am I correct that this would mean if i had variables
application.foo and
application.foobar they will then be request.foo and
request.foobar? Would
it be wise to set the request variables in another page
other than
application.cfm since application.cfm is always hit?
OR is there a better way to deal with this? Any
tips/tricks/advice is
appreciated!

CF Server Troubleshooting

2002-09-26 Thread Robert Shaw

Hi,
My boss has asked me to make a document for troubleshooting ColdFusion,
including a checklist, for my department in case any of the more experienced
developers are not around. Aside from the typical troubleshooting Best
Practices he also wants a checklist for troubleshooting a server
down/crashing issue on Unix AND NT. Does anyone know if such checklists
already exists? I'd also appreciate any tips/tricks/links to any other
troubleshooting guides.

Thanks,
Rob

CF Admin Books

2002-09-26 Thread Robert Shaw

Can anyone recommend any CF books that cover topics such as Administration,
Performance, and troubleshooting? I've seen the Construction Kit books but
I'm looking for one that is more geared for the CF Server Admin - maybe
something that covers what's underneath the covers in ColdFusion.

Thanks!
