getPageContext().Forward() problem

Has anyone figured out the problem whereby this command hangs and gives you
a Jrun error?  I know this is a little cryptic but if you've had the problem
then you know what I'm talking about.

RE: Random "Could not connect to JRun Server" error

2003-12-04 Thread Sparrow-Hood, Walter
We've had the same problem - at least the same error message.  If you
refresh the page then it completes the request properly.  I traced it down
to using getPageContext().Forward.  I could never figure out why it was
causing a problem - I changed the statement to getPageContext().Include
(which in my case didn't affect the logic) and everything works fine.  I
suspect that somehow it was getting confused, couldn't find the page it was
looking for and timed out.  It seemed to happen most when it was forwarding
to another directory.  Some other people have had the same problem but I've
never seen a solution (or an explanation for that matter).

Subject:	Random "Could not connect to JRun Server" error

We recently upgraded our production environment from CFMX 6.0 (updater 3) to
CFMX 6.1.  The upgraded process completely successfully on all 3 of our
production boxes.

However, on our "dominate" box (the one with the most scheduled tasks, web
server 1), we keep getting this error:

Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your
request.
Could not connect to JRun Server.

It happens at completely random times, sometimes at night, sometimes in the
morning.  It appears that JRun just hangs (50% CPU usage) but IIS is still
running just fine.  There is absolutely nothing in the logs that would
indicate a problem.. the server just dies... and this is only happening on 1
of the 3 boxes.

The only other difference (aside from more scheduled tasks) is that
ColdFusion runs under an "app_coldfusion" account instead of the local
system account.  We had to do this as we're using pgp to encrypt some files,
and pgp needs to be run under a different account.  The other 2 boxes run
under the local system account.  I really hope that this isn't the cause of
the error.

Any ideas?  Has anyone else ever encountered this before?

2.  Manage multiple page invoices as necessary driven by number of items and
number of characters in each line item description
3.  I will add cfc calls to fill in live info, so you only need to deal with

Subject:	SOT:  Learning Java for a CF Developer - a possible
solution?

I've been getting a lot of (some not so)
gentle suggestions, lately, that CF may
not be the best solution for what I want
to do.

So, I decided, I would learn Java (I had
tried several times before -- even
bought a 500 lb  book & CD -- "Learn
Java in 551 weeks", or somesuch.

Well, a long weekend was coming, & I had
some time -- give it a go!

But where to start:

I probably needed a more robust IDE &
this list recommended eclipse.

Eclipse is quite an involved
application, but it is wrtitten in and
for Java and has some CF plugins too.

After about 1 day, I was comfortable
enough with eclipse, that I could
address my main objective: Learn Java.*

* I don't expect that I will become a
Java expert, nor even a Java programmer.
But I will have the ability to write
acceptable Java applications (or Java
extensions to CF applications) when
needed.  And, I should be able to read
and understand Java programs written by
others.

So, I googled around for a Java
tutorial.  One obvious site was Sun. But
the Sun site, is like Microsoft's site
-- very difficult to navigate or search
unless you already know the lingo.

And the articles always seen to be part
of a long-term agenda -- I always feel
like I came in "in the middle" and that
they are trying to teach/sell me a lot
of stuff I don't want or need,

I did not want to start learning Java
with a sales pitch or delving into the
advantages and nuances of OOP.

I did find an online book, that claims
not to be a tutorial.  It also claims
not to be a book on Java, rather "An
introduction to programming, Using
Java".  It was reasonably up to date,
July 2002, so let's have a look.

At first, it seems a little basic, but I
resisted the temptation to skim ahead.
And I forced myself to try all the
examples (learn both Eclipse and Java at
the same time).

Well, it is more like a class lecture
than a book or tutorial.  The instructor
covers what needs to be covered, defers
complexity until you are ready to absorb
it, and moves right along.  I found that
the early chapters, while conceptually
nothing new to an experienced
programmer, did put me in a comfort zone
with Java terminology and the Java way
of doing things.

Exactly what I was looking for!

If you want to introduce a little Java
into your life, have a look:

http://www.faqs.org/docs/javap/index.html

And, as I learn, I am resisting the temptation
to go off and experiment (too much), but to
stay focused and complete the course.

ListGetAt vs. ListToArray

I have an application where I have to read a large file, record by record.
After each record is read, I do some processing of the data and then save it

individual data elements or just do one ListToArray and then operate on the
array?  Or, is there a better way?

Misbehaving query

WHERE #whereString#

CF ends up passing user="foo" in the SQL string and it obviously throws an
error.

Anybody know how to get around this??

I think I just noticed a bug in 6.1 (with the updater in place).  The
CFMAILPART tag has an attribute called "wraptext" which allows you to
set the column at which text is wrapped.  The problem is that it doesn't
work as it should.  A text-wrap function should wrap text when the line
gets to a certain length.  Currently (OSX WWW and mail client, Windows
server) it appears to wrap every X characters rather than if a line gets
beyond X characters (notice the difference?).

An example...

Just figured I'd list one that he did not list.

I like these debates, sometimes they make me aware of things I was not
overly aware of. Such as a couple of things available already done in
dhtml

Yea, but... did you write you code on keypunch machines (and then proceed to
drop the box!). What awful memories.

guys!

As others have said, the raw number of years is not always a good
measure. I've known career programmers who really haven't improved
since when they were newbies and I've also known some kick-ass
youngsters.

I started programming as a kid at school, writing Algol 60 to solve
math problems around the age of 14 and programming a TI-58 calculator
for all sorts of things. I moved on to BASIC in my late teens and then
at university ('79) I started doing Pascal and, independently, learned
FORTRAN, PL/1, several assembly languages and, later, LISP and Prolog.
I graduated in '83 after writing an APL interpreter (in Pascal) and
could write reasonably complex programs in about a dozen computer
languages. I'd done commercial programming in C, COBOL and several
assembly languages by this point.

I did three years' research into computer language design and
implementation techniques, while learning some other languages "for
fun". I started doing more commercial C and Pascal during this time,
then C++ in early '92 and Java in early '97 and finally ColdFusion in
late 2001.

So I guess I've been programming for fun and profit for around 30
years. Waaahhh! I'm OLD!!! I used to back up my code on punched tape.

RE: CFC required arguments

Barney,
I'm curious - why do you prefer structKeyExists() vs. setting
default values?

If you use positional parameters, only parameters at the end can be
left off. However, you can use named parameters without using
CFINVOKE:

I generally prefer to not specify a default for my option arguments,
and then use structKeyExists() against the 'arguments' struct to check
if they were passed. Since we don't have method overloading in CF,
optional parameters (and their associated conditionals) are a
necessary evil.

I haven't even gotten that far. I've installed it on my 3.0 version and it
shows up under product configuration as being installed properly but I can't
find it anywhere - very frustrating.

Hi,

I've just installed the latest release (1.02) of DBEdit into my
eclipse 3.0 and have come across a problem.

I can see the prefs for it, I can see the views for it, but how the
hell do I set up a connection? I have hunted and hunted and found
nothing.

Any ideas?

Flash Professional vs. Royale

2003-08-30 Thread Sparrow-Hood, Walter
Anybody care to comment or have any information the new developer related
functionality in Flash Professional vs. what's been promised/hinted re:
Royale. Has Rolyale morphed into FlashPro? Is FlashPro a hint of what's to
come? My real concern/question is do I spend the money and time to learn
FlashPro if something with even more capability for RIA is coming along
before the end of the year?
