RE: cfgraph and cffile

2001-08-10 Thread Tangorre, Mike

h, not sure abtou that one, I tried using CFGRAPH for a lot of tasks
here at work, and it just is not advanced enough (or my skills are not
advanced enough), we wound up buying POPCHART from Corda which is awesome
for dynamic graphing, and works great with Cold Fusion.

Just some extra info, i know it doesnt answer your question. :-)

Not sure about counting the number of fields returned by a form,

but... you can use:

MyQueryName.RecordCount

to show the number of results returned by a CF query.

H, I am using 4.5.2 as well, but i did not install or uninstall anything
like you have talked about.
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling it?

I know that when i was using studio 4.5, the file list window would not list
files even after hitting refresh, I uninstalled studio, reinstalled it and
it worked fine... go figure. lol

Somebody asked me today why the CFML Validator in CF Studio
doesn't work right. I must admit, I haven't used it, so I
tried it out to see what it did.

Any time I put ANY cfml code in the page, it died,
saying "CFML Validator Exception. Please contact support
with the template that gave this message". Even a simple
CFOUTPUT causes the validator to crash.

Does anyone know a way to shore it up, or was it designed
(like the infamous Design Mode) to be used only for HTML?

Thanks in advance

If at all possible, try to decide what kind of company you'll be working
for when you graduate. Small? Large? If you're a developer at a
sizable company, administration skills aren't particularly necessary.
If you work for a small company (or yourself), you may be expected to do
everything from development to system and site administration, to
cleaning toilets.

Most Win2K/NT admins learn by doing... that is they point and click and
never really understand what the server software is doing. Right now
(witness Code Red) it's a disaster, but Microsoft has been steering down
this road for years. They wanted the receptionist to be able to run the
file & print server - now she administers the company web server.

If you want to go into administration, commit to it and expect more than
a few sleepless nights when you can't figure out why IIS is crashing
every 45 minutes. Or, if you're a developer, and this is how you'll
make your living, expand your development skills. Learn JavaScript C++,
Java, Perl. If you've got even a fingernail's worth of artistic skills,
learn to use PhotoShop or other graphics tools, at least to the point
where you can slap together simple buttons and banners.

Jim

Is there a utility that I can run with NT scheduler that will restart an
NT server? I'm trying to track down some memory leaks, but if I can't
solve it before vacation time I want to just set up a way to restart the
server every few days at some time in the early am.

As long as we are being snippy...I doubt a tag from 98 is going to do the
trick.

This tag was designed for Windows NT, using
InitiateSystemShutdownA from the Windows API. As far as I know, it will not
work under Windows 95. Not sure about Windows 98, but I doubt it. If anyone
finds out differently, let me know.

As far as searching the tag gallery first, cut him some slack. If all the
answers were in the tag gallery, the threads would be.

Post 1: Ask my question
Post 2: Go Look it up in the tag gallery

At least if you are going to make the statement along the lines that there
is a tag in the tag gallery, you should have searched there first, then you
should at least have looked further into the tag before making such a
blanket statement.

Not to be snippy, but please try searching the tag gallery before
posting questions like this.

Searching for 'reboot' in the Allaire tag gallery comes up with
CFX_RestartMachine as it's second result. Here's the direct link to the

Home Office Firewall

2001-08-03 Thread Tangorre, Mike

Any ideas on home firewall software? I run a cold fusion server and ftp
server from home so I can backup work, and work remotely and when I am at
school and what not. What would be some good firewall protection to
implemement on the server?

Might be an idea to go away and change the IP addresses on your servers now
and abandon these two for all eternity

Never put this kind of information out on the list. You are openning
yourself up to abuse by the few unscrupulous people on this list...

RE: Form question

2001-08-01 Thread Tangorre, Mike

Well you could save the word doc as HTML, then open the document up and add
the HTML for the fields. BE WARNED, Microsoft HTML is nasty to work in...
all kinds of crazy things going on.

My other suggestion: take a creen shot of the form. set the back ground to a
new page with the pic you just saved. Build the form...

Kinda odd request bu I think I know what you are trying to do. :-)

Hi gang,

I have no problem with using HTML forms or CFFORM to create forms.
But I'm being asked to convert an existing "paper-style" MS Word document to
a web form where info can be captured and emailed.

My question is: is there a way to "overlay" form elements onto an existing
doc saved as HTML without doing the form over from scratch?
Thanks.

Looking for a robust, full featured Shopping Cart system to integrate into
ColdFusion. I've heard a little about AbleCommerce, is this the best option?
It's a little on the pricey side at $3000 and $495 per additional store.

Anyone know of a good CF Cart application that won't bust the wallet?

RE: Sort by 1st three letters of month?

why not just have a lookup table with the months in it as strings.
Then your code would be:

SELECT monthName, monthID
FROM months

There is no need to do this in ColdFusion. Your database is able to convert
the month numbers into their text equivalents. MUCH faster than doing it in
CF.

What I do is on forms in in the database I just use the numbers 1-12 for
months as the data. Then on output I do somehting like

JanuaryFebruary
etc.

It's not the most eloquent way but it works and is highly reusable. That way
I just do an ordinary ORDER BY months, and it works.
Of course this calls for having seperate fields for month, day, date.

Subject: CFIF Confusion

Hello!

I'm working with SQL Server 2000 and I have a query I'm confused about.
There's a field (FIELD1) that's defined as a VARCHAR. The field contains
either "Yes" or "No". I SELECT all records and then want to display
somthing different if FIELD1 is a "Yes" or "No".

  The following structure works:

Bunch of code

This structure does not work:

Bunch of code

I've also notice that in SQL, if I do a:
SELECT *
FROM TableName
WHERE (FIELD1 LIKE 'yes')
it works, but
SELECT *
FROM TableName
WHERE (Field1 IS 'yes')
does not work...

???
Thx

I thought that since we are all now Macromedia customers we could do a spot
the best Dynamic flash site. (does not have to be CF driven, not sure what
this one is to be honest)

Thought I'd start the ball rolling with http://www.2advanced.com

This site grabbed me by the short and curlys, well impressed, its well out
there.

RE: Practice

2001-07-27 Thread Tangorre, Mike

True. I am finding that during this internship, I am learning best by
jumping right into the code, and reading up on things when I get stuck and
what not.
I must say this list is a great source, like someone already mentioned, for
information. Its fun to read about others issues and think about ways to
solve them. Seemss like I add more and more everyday.

I agree, examples are a good way to learn ( observation - a manditory
attribute for any scientest) Sometimes looking at someone elses code,
correctly written, can impart knowledge very quickly. For example, what
kind of code will you find in the application.cfm file of a "in production"
site, written by experienced developers would be interesting to a beginner.
Unfortunately, entire web sites in CF may not be available unless someone is
willing to post their entire code on one of the websites.

Practice

2001-07-26 Thread Tangorre, Mike

Does anyone know of any sites online that have examples to work out in CF?
I am working as an intern and have some free time.. I would like to look
into some of the harder concepts of CF. Perhaps more specifically: arrays,
structures, trees, scopes, and some of the built in functions. I have the CF
books here, but would like to find some more examples to increase my
knowledge. :-) any ideas?

RE: CF Certification

2001-07-25 Thread Tangorre, Mike

Thanks for the kind reply.
I will keep your comments in mind as job offers unfold and graduation closes
in.
Right now I am working as an intern in the DC area and am learning so much.
Cold Fusion is a lot of fun and my willingness to learn as much as possible
is always there.
I just needed some insight as to wether or not certifications were as
important as some make
them out to be.

Thanks again,

Mike

Some will say yes, some will say no, Mike. I believe that any certification
can carry SOME value, in that there will always be employers stuck on the
notion that a "certified" applicant carries some magical power over someone
without the piece of paper. So if you can afford it, and have the time, it
can be worthwhile. However, don't get bogged down with certification. Once
on the job, it's always going to be how you can apply your knowledge to
different and mostly unexpected situations that sets you apart. Having a
certificate is nice, having a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn
and work with others is a must :)

And the single most important thing: Never be afraid to say "I don't know
how to do that".

Best of luck Mike!

CF Certification

2001-07-25 Thread Tangorre, Mike

Hi everyone.

I am a college senior about to graduate with a degree in computer Science. I
was wondering how valuable having CF certification is. I intend to get it
very soon, and was curious to know if anyone has it and if it has helped
them in the job market at all.

Thanks,
Mike
