Amazon using CF

2000-12-14 Thread Greg Wolfinger

Hey Guys:

I was looking at some amazon.com source and notice quite a bit of whitespace,
resembling CF output. Does anyone know if Amazon uses CF or what language they do use.

I'm pretty sure Amazon has its own scripting language. I know Excite does.
In fact there are a few high-end, high-volume sites that do that.

BEA System's WebLogic
It's a java app server. Somewhere in the $20 grand per processor range.
Of course, it does allow for the personalization you see on Amazon's site.

many websites on CF can be broken very easily then.

That's not a CF bug, it's an IIS bug. The script reading exploits will work
with any scripting language used on IIS.

Although, 'easy to read' CFML just means a good coder coded it.
I wouldn't take that as a reflection on Allaire or ColdFusion.

I've worked with CFM templates that were so large and poorly written it
took weeks to make heads or tails out of it.

But if I'm thinking of the same bug, that was an IIS exploit that would have

That's because they didn't convert anything. They loaded Toys R Us's inventory into

Nothing new had to be written.
BTW, they lost alot of "toy specific" functionality along the way.

Where did you get this data? The stuff I read is that it took thousands of
man hours and almost a year to complete the integration of the TRU store at
Amazon.

If I remember correctly, the announcement about the partnership with Amazon
was made in August of this year. All in all, pretty ballsy, unless it had
been in the works for quite some time.

Actually I tried another scripting languages on IIS - and cannot get the
same result as at CF. But I agree that it is not CF problem. It is problem
of CF+IIS

Amazon used to use CF - Allaire was proud to have them as a client about two
years ago - since then they are tried asp,cgi and other such nonsense!

Hey Guys:

I was looking at some amazon.com source and notice quite a bit of
whitespace, resembling CF output. Does anyone know if Amazon uses CF or
what language they do use.

I think it is quite possible that there might be some left overs from the
Toy'Rus stuff but other than that I don't think your gonna find any.

I am pretty sure that the issue that you are referring to release code for
ASP, JSP, and any other server side scripting as well. That issue had
nothing to do with Cold Fusion whatsoever. As long as you code efficiently
and code with security issues in mind you CF apps will be secure. The big
problem is that you need to keep up to date with the thousands of patches
put out by Microsoft for IIS.
