CF-Talk Archiver

2001-05-14 Thread Peter Tilbrook

I am currently putting the finishing touches on a small CF application
that reads in email messages, in this case CF-Talk email, stores them in a
database and makes the database searchable (via Verity).

The final application will be able to do the same with any email address
but hey CF-Talk deserves posterity so I wrote it for that purpose.

The finished version will be "postcardware", ie: send me a postcard and I
will send you the full code via email.

Cheers!

CF-Talk Archiver

2001-05-17 Thread coldfusion

I finished it finally. We are having problems with Tel$tra ADSL but you
should be able to grab the postcard code here:

And test the site here:

http://clients.lunarpower.com.au/peter_tilbrook/cftalkarchive/

This is running under Access and not SQL Server but the code is tested
under SQL and rolled back, long story. I will probably remove the "delete"
message feature from the demo.

Cheers!

Doesn't CF-Talk already archive the emails?

Yes, but unfortunately some of us occasionally have to go offline. Yes, I
know, it sucks, but a sad fact of life :)

I think a client side app would be great - searching would be much faster
than loading up the online archive. I currently read CF-Talk through Agent
(the icky newsreader) from the fuseware NNTP mirror. I am working on a
little program to parse the Agent file format and dump the messages into a
database. If someone can make available their archives in a format Peter's
application can read, I may not have to bother finishing it. Anyone? Peter,
I would love to send you a postcard... but good ole Perth is not too
exciting :)

Re: [CF-Talk Archiver]

2001-05-14 Thread Michael Dinowitz

* Team Allaire *
House of Fusion (yes, that's me) is looking into doing a weekly thread
compilation of the lists. I have in my hand an 18 page test compilation that
was done by an editor. Once it's been reviewed and polished I'll hand it out
to a few 'test' subjects to see how they like it. Once we have a solid
format we'll be compiling list archives on a regular basis.
The basic format I'd like to see is one of:
1. Question
2. Answer
3. Additional answers (if exist)
4. Clarification (if exist)
5. Answers on clarification (if exist)
This will allow someone to see the whole flow of logic from question to
possible answer. That's the good news. The bad is that we have to pay for
the editor to go through all the posts, compile them and write them up.
We're looking to MM and others for sponsorships and would like to keep from
charging people for it. We'll have to see how it goes.

CF-Talk Archiver (1.04)

2001-07-08 Thread Peter Tilbrook

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Someone posted a message earlier regarding an archive of CF-Talk
messages.

I knocked up CF-Talk Archiver for a similar reason (demo at
http://clients.lunarpower.com.au/peter_tilbrook/cftalkarchive/) - this
is a fairly slow link though (60K).

Admittedly I spent more time on my "ColdBookmarks" application -
CF-Talk was down for quite a while DownUnder so was put aside for a
bit.

Anyway CF-Talk Archiver works well and can be obtained from:

D5-83F000508B94F85A&method=Full>

It's open source and I've made some tweaks to the code that aren't in
the DevEx release so email me if you want the latest code.

Cheers!

CF-Talk Archiver - version 1.0

2001-05-16 Thread coldfusion

Am getting there...

For the uninitiated:

CF-Talk Archiver is a ColdFusion application for retrieving CF-Talk email
messages and storing them in a database for indexing. The application
fetches the emails from the email address you subscribed to for CF-Talk
email messages. It doesn't handle attachments as CF-Talk does not permit
them anyway. Two versions will be available, standard ODBC (Access 2000)
or advanced, MS SQL 7.0/2000).

It does not impact upon the CF-Talk mailing list apart from allowing new
or replys to messages already posted.

You could use this application to store emails from any account although
it is designed for use with CF-Talk email messages only (no attachments).

The application also deletes the messages from your POP server as they are
stored. I am in the final stages of development - responding to messages
(back to CF-Talk themselves) which is easy enough, however...

For some reason message "from" details contain quotation marks " and
sometimes fools and horses use them in the subject also. This is causing
problems with my javascript back end for mouseovers. I could remove this
or someone could explain how to remove " characters from variables. I've
done ' and spaces and _ characters but this has me stumped.

Any quick and easy code out there to strip the " symbol, it could occur
more than once in a variable also.

Regards,
PT

Peter,

nice app.

was wondering if you have any new updates of the software to pull
emails from a box where other emails might be and also delete the list
specific emails when done??

Seems to be my biggest problem/need, as the list likes to hit me
suddenly with hundreds of emails in my general emailbox... requiring me
to cleanup before doing what I was doing before the deluge...

To remove a quote from a variable using JavaScript, try a regular
