CF hosting??

2000-05-22 Thread Richard Hart

Hi

Does anyone know of a cheap hosting company
in the UK where I can get my ColdFusion site
online ?

Or is it just so expensive to host ColdFusion sites ?!

Thanks

We're thinking of starting a CF Developer hosting solution - do any of you
have some ideas or suggestions on what you would like to see in a cf hosting
provider?

Any comments are appreciated.

Thank you,

CF Hosting

2003-12-23 Thread Burns, John
Ok, I know this has been asked multiple times, but I want to see if
anyone has a direction for me based on my specific needs...

I need to find a hosting company that meets the following requirements.
This can be done through a shared hosting or dedicated server, but I'm
trying to find a reliable, low-cost solution for hosting approximately
20 sites (growing in the near future).  The hosting must:

- CFMX 6.1
- allow the use of ALL CF tags (no disabled tags)
- windows server OS preferred
- tape backups
- company support for hardware and maybe some software issues
- MS SQL server
- POP/IMAP support

I think that covers it.  If you have any suggestions, please let me
know.  I have considered the co-location option, but I'm somewhat afraid
of depending on a single server for all of that load.  Thanks

2001-08-29 Thread BEN MORRIS

Fellow Developers,

I am looking for a good (cheap) CF host for my personal sites, anyone have
praise/horror stories for:
CFXHosting.com
or
CFM-Resources.com

Or even better, does anyone know of a page that actually lists cf hosts with user
ratings? I have seen rated web hosts, and lists of CF hosts, but never the combination
of the two.

Thanks for any input.

I'm loathe to bring this up for the zillionth time ... But I need
opinions. A client wants to know about hosting a couple of sites with
this outfit:

Does anyone know anything about them?
Opinions?

I don't need a referral to another host, we have plenty of others to
choose from, I always follow those threads on here ... But this is the
first time I've heard of this one. A search of the archives on HOF
didn't bring anything up.

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of starting a searchable directory of ColdFusion hosting companies and

Don't forget the custom tag directory and getting an ability to let users
create their own absolute-path includes (altough it is probably hard to
realize that). An option for the user to create their own db-connects would
be fine too.

John,

We offer several of the requirements you are seeking, but do not offer
windows or MSSQL.

We do have an excellent reseller program with the best rates around.
Our plans include unlimited bandwidth and lots of HD space.

We can even set you up with Dedicated or VDS options.

Check out our offerings here:

I think in order to meet all your requirements, a co-lo would be about your only
option.  Hard drive space is about the only thing you omitted from your specs.
If you are seeking a clustered environment, get ready to spend some money.

I don't know of a shared hosting environment that will allow ALL CF tags, if for
no other reason security of the data for their other clients.

But you might try the company listed at the footer of every message to this
list.

What is the consensus on the use of custom tags/cfx tags with most CF hosts?
Do most work with you? Will they review its use before implementing it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about tape backups and IMAP though... :)

RE: CF Hosting

2003-12-23 Thread Mike Kear
Do you want to be a reseller of this space or are you the client here, John?

We can handle nearly all of that, but we don't have a reseller program - its
not in our business strategy.  We'll work with you and be as flexible as
anyone anywhere, but a reseller program is something we haven't built in
yet.   So it means the control panel you'll get is the end user control
panel not a reseller's one.

We have no disabled tags except CFREGISTRY but if you needed it, we could
consider it.  But no promises.  We don't really want to expose everyone to
risk of one person making a mistake using it.

We will allow any CFX tags, but we want to install it for you and we want to
see what it does first.  If there's a risk to other clients we'll work to
find another way of doing what you want, but so far we've never had to say
to anyone 'Nope you can't do that" (which was a regular occurrence when I
started out hosting).

Why do you need IMAP?   Will POP3/SMTP do for what you need?

Otherwise .. we have Win2K, SQL2000, CFMX6.1  users get their own control
panel to set up their email accounts etc themselves, set up databases, ftp
sites etc.

For fuller details see
http://afpwebworks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=DisplayDocument

&DocumentID=4   (NOTE:  If you're comparing prices based on this, they are
quoted here in Australian dollars including GST.  We can bill in any
currency if you use a credit card, and if you're not doing business in
Australia, that takes 10% off the price because we don't have to charge you
GST).

As a guide, the prices shown on our page would be about 2/3 if expressed  in
US dollars for a non-Australian company at today's exchange rate).

Mike,

I appreciate the contact.  Here's the deal.  I have a side business that
I do (approximately 7 sites) and a friend has a business that handles
approximately 7-10 sites.  We're looking at a possible merger of our two
businesses and some growth in the near future.  We prefer windows
servers (right now I use a linux host) and Microsoft SQL as the database
server.  Most hosting companies disable a bunch of CF tags for security
purposes.  The main ones that we need that aren't available with most
places are: CFFILE, CFDIRECTORY, CFEXECUTE and CFCONTENT.  We'd like to
be able to have all of the sites be able to use commons sets of code
(and ideally be able to get to all of the sites with one ftp login).
We've considered doing a co-location or dedicated server but we're
worried about server availability without doing some kind of clustering
or something like that.  Do you have clustered servers? Our goal is to
get something that won't cost us an arm and a leg so we can offer it to
our customers for a reasonable price and we need near-free-reign as far
as coding goes so we can take advantage of some of the advanced features
in CF.  Let me know your responses and we'd be glad to consider your
company.  Thanks!

Hi John,

>From my perspective, your requirements seem to demand a dedicated
server.  As has already been stated, a shared server will not provide
access to all CF tags.  [Or, at least, SHOULDN'T.]  A co-located server
will typically not be managed, meaning that you are left entirely

Circa 3000 offers dedicated CF servers which appear to meet all of your

Re: CF Hosting

2003-12-23 Thread Tom Kitta
With about 20 sites you may consider co-location. 2-3 servers can fit in a 1/8 cabinet for about 125CAD a month with 25Gb transfer free. You get full control of your servers which also comes with some small responsibilities. However, the added flexibility and virtually unlimited growth space as well as not so high price are, in my opinion, well worth it.

Our goal is to
get something that won't cost us an arm and a leg so we can offer it to
our customers for a reasonable price and we need near-free-reign as far
as coding goes so we can take advantage of some of the advanced features
in CF.  Let me know your responses and we'd be glad to consider your
  company.  Thanks!

Do you want to be a reseller of this space or are you the client here,
  John?

We can handle nearly all of that, but we don't have a reseller program -
its not in our business strategy.  We'll work with you and be as
flexible as anyone anywhere, but a reseller program is something we
  haven't built in
yet.   So it means the control panel you'll get is the end user control
  panel not a reseller's one.

We have no disabled tags except CFREGISTRY but if you needed it, we
could consider it.  But no promises.  We don't really want to expose
everyone to risk of one person making a mistake using it.

We will allow any CFX tags, but we want to install it for you and we
want to see what it does first.  If there's a risk to other clients
we'll work to find another way of doing what you want, but so far we've
never had to say to anyone 'Nope you can't do that" (which was a regular
occurrence when I started out hosting).

Why do you need IMAP?   Will POP3/SMTP do for what you need?

Otherwise .. we have Win2K, SQL2000, CFMX6.1  users get their own
control panel to set up their email accounts etc themselves, set up
  databases, ftp sites etc.

  For fuller details see
  http://afpwebworks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=DisplayDocument

&DocumentID=4   (NOTE:  If you're comparing prices based on this, they
  are
quoted here in Australian dollars including GST.  We can bill in any
currency if you use a credit card, and if you're not doing business in
Australia, that takes 10% off the price because we don't have to charge
  you
  GST).

As a guide, the prices shown on our page would be about 2/3 if expressed
in US dollars for a non-Australian company at today's exchange rate).

Thanks

  John

CF Hosting Questions

2004-03-23 Thread Burns, John D
I am trying to figure out what route I should go with hosting for the
future.  Here are some of my needs/wishes and I'm curious what
suggestions everyone could give:

- Current hosting about 15 sites on a Linux set of clustered servers
using MySQL and CFMX but extemely limited data transfer and email
accounts, disk space, etc.

Looking at growing substantially with some new sites and we're looking
at moving towards a semi- or full-dedicated solution.  I am familiar
with basic tasks for management and upkeep of a server, but I can't
dedicate time to host it locally and maintain it or anything, however,
I'd like to be able to access it and do simple administration (add new
sites, email account, virtual directories, etc) but in the event of a
harddrive crash or something, I want someone else to be monitoring and
take care of it.

I'd like to get MS SQL, CFMX, unlimited POP (or IMAP) accounts for
multiple domains, unlimited aliases for multiple domains.  I'm using
ImageMagick to do image resizing for multiple sites, so I'm thinking
that I'll need a good amount of memory and at least 1 good processor in
the machine.  Hard drive space needs to be around 30-40GB+ and data
transfer around 50-100+ would be great.

Any suggestions for companies that offer this type of service or even
thoughts on whether I should go with semi- or full-dedicated and also if
I should just do colocation or something.  Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

thats 1 reason i like hostmysite, on my linux box its just cfmx, php and maybe

I did look at CFMX Hosting - but for what you pay you get nothing -
50mb webspace and MS Access DB.

The reason i personally went for CT was that with the "Intermediate"
plan you get 400mb and MySQL db etc - and with the conversion of $ to
£'s it works out cheaper (about £90 annually)

The reason for looking at Vuix was for a friend who wanted cheap
hosting with xchange rate it works out at only £30 - the equilivant to
some cheap ASP hosting providers overhere. Personally as long as it
has MySQL & CFMX 6.1 all is good. I know you get more if you pay more
- but some people don't need/care for it all - and it doesnt matter
how we say it.

Re: CF Hosting

2005-02-16 Thread russ
We offer:

Tier 4 Package
1000 MB Space / 15 GB of Transfer
5 MySQL databases / ColdFusion MX
Control panel management
$12.00/month

and

Tier 3 Package
400 MB Space / 8 GB of Transfer
3 MySQL databases / ColdFusion MX
Control panel management
$8.00/month

With CFMX (and will upgrade soon). Part of the cost differential may be
the working on a Win environment vs. the *nix environment, though.

And for what it's worth, I don't really call that nothing, either. We
think it's pretty fair and we researched various offerings before coming
up with those packages.

Re: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Pablo Varando
Michael,

I've used a few hosts out there (some I can recommend and others I can't ;)

I will only metion those that I can recommend:

http://www.colony1.net (this one hosts EasyCFM.COM and I've had no downtime
since it's been up (the systems are very reliable and fast). Mention that
EasyCFM.COM sent you and you'll get the cost even lower ;) (Prices, Details,
etc: https://secure.colony1.net/easycfmpromo/ )

A few others that I have used/tested for product reviews and I can honestly
say I liked what I saw are:
http://www.dataride.com
http://www.cfxhosting.com

With that being said, it all really depends on what your needs are, if you
are running something important that requires 150% uptime, then I really
suggest (if budget allows) to get your own box. Having owned
CFM-Resources.Com and seeing some of the applications implemented into some
of those boxes, I know that most problems that people experience (shortages,
downtime, etc.) are from sites that people test directly on the server
(instead of thoroughly testing prior to uploading to the server) and are
just poorly coded. When you share space, that means you also share
resources, etc... So the more people on a box, the more of a chance of
problems (no matter what you pay :)

I guess, the real question here is What type of budget are you looking
to spend?

Dedicated hosting with admin control over the boxes...

currently have 3 servers:
2 web
1 db

Would like to move to:

2 db servers (SQL 2K)
2 webservers (CFMX / IIS / LYRIS)

OR

2 db servers
clustered webservers (3 or 4)
complete backup of the db servers... so 4 total.

OR

something along those lines

Well,

In that case I would definetly suggest Colony One. They are good about that
and work with you all the way. I would suggest you give them a call and like
I said tell them that I sent you (they will give you better pricing that
way..) and explain to them what your needs are..

They will work to set you up right and affordably. ;)

RES: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Jefferson Teixeira
Hi Guys,

I've selected 2 host [http://www.edgewebhosting.net/] or
[http://www.hostmysite.com]
Both of them are sponsoring our CFUG-São Paulo - Brazil
Our site is hosted by Edge Web Hosting

Assunto: Re: cf hosting

Michael,

I've used a few hosts out there (some I can recommend and others I can't
;)

I will only metion those that I can recommend:

http://www.colony1.net (this one hosts EasyCFM.COM and I've had no
downtime
since it's been up (the systems are very reliable and fast). Mention
that
EasyCFM.COM sent you and you'll get the cost even lower ;) (Prices,
Details,
etc: https://secure.colony1.net/easycfmpromo/ )

A few others that I have used/tested for product reviews and I can
honestly
say I liked what I saw are:
http://www.dataride.com
http://www.cfxhosting.com

With that being said, it all really depends on what your needs are, if
you
are running something important that requires 150% uptime, then I really
suggest (if budget allows) to get your own box. Having owned
CFM-Resources.Com and seeing some of the applications implemented into
some
of those boxes, I know that most problems that people experience
(shortages,
downtime, etc.) are from sites that people test directly on the server
(instead of thoroughly testing prior to uploading to the server) and are
just poorly coded. When you share space, that means you also share
resources, etc... So the more people on a box, the more of a chance of
problems (no matter what you pay :)

I guess, the real question here is What type of budget are you
looking
to spend?

RE: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Jim Davis
I'll throw my hat in for CrystalTech.

I've had some VERY MINOR issues with dumbass tech support people (but I've
never seen an business with a truly effective dumbass filter).

Aside from that however:

1) They are incredibly communicative and I prize this highly. Every little
upgrade is communicated and explained. Any issues with upgrades are fully
detailed in a no BS way. If they're at fault, they'll tell you.

For example about a year ago a code-red spawn infected some of their
customer's co-located machines. However since the machines shared some
network infrastructure with (properly patched) virtual server hosts there
was a performance impact. This was communicated directly and within a day
or two the two network classes were completely separated.

2) They are very clear about their prices and policies. For example they
recently lowered all their prices because, as they announced, they have
completed planned network expansion.

3) They are very good about security patches and pro-actively inform
customers of issues which may affect them.

4) They are constantly adding value. They recently added SQL Server to some
smaller plans without raising the prices. They're currently in the process
of upgrading the email server and stats servers (many hosts just languish at
old versions).

The big part of this is communication. Most hosts I've dealt with simply
don't talk to you. You call up asking why your site is down and they answer
"we're applying a service pack". That's unforgivable in my opinion - send
me a freakin' email BEFORE hand!

Re: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Charlie Griefer
I've been hearing a lot of really good things about CrystalTech. In fact, a
client of mine is currently moving to them.

I needed to make sure they support cffile...so I can answer about the tag
restrictions. Quoted from their response:

Yes, you can use CFFile on all ColdFusion hosting Plans. The only tags we
disable are CFRegistry, CFAdminSecurity and CFSchedule.

Just as a note: they do offer an interface to the NT scheduler in their
control panel. So while it's annoying that my application install (which
uses CFSCHEDULE) doesn't work, I can set up my tasks easily using the
control panel.

RE: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Matt Robertson
If you're dedicated then think about Cybercon.com.

I'm on my 3rd year there and have been very happy. They don't provide
managed service though (or at least not to me with the prices I'm
paying), or software, so you have to bring your own licenses or buy/rent
from them. They do ping the box every 3 mins and reboot it if it goes
down, and I can always call them 24x7 and get a real person if I have an
emergency. Neither is a common occurrence but of course it can happen.

One neat thing is you get 32 IPs with each box; plus you can buy more
dirt cheap. I have a total of 96 IPs and I pay US$10 ten) dollars
monthly for the privilege, and I can get more for the same rate.

Would like to move to:

2 db servers (SQL 2K)
2 webservers (CFMX / IIS / LYRIS)

OR

2 db servers
clustered webservers (3 or 4)
complete backup of the db servers... so 4 total.

OR

something along those lines

RE: cf hosting

2003-07-25 Thread Nate Nelson
I will also vouch for CFDynamics. I have used their services for a few
years and I have had a great experience.

Any work that I have done that was not hosted at CFDynamics I have had
problems with. With my current work that is NOT hosted at CFDynamics (I
had no decision on who we chose as our host) we had a problem on a
dedicated server that set us back a couple days and our current host (I
won't mention their name) was not able to help us with the problem.
Their overall reply after attempting to help us fix it was "Call
Macromedia and open a trouble ticket." Because of this problem we were
down and being scheduled to go live the next day we didn't have time to
go that route. I called the guys at CFDynamics and they were able to
walk me through fixing the problem over the phone. In minutes we were
back up and ready to go. Their knowledge alone is reason to use them as
your host.

Check out CFDynamics (www.cfdynamics.com) and save yourself some

Dedicated or shared, we have used both. Been there happily I think for

cf hosting - CFFILE

2003-07-29 Thread mayo
I've been using readyhosting. I recommend it for low-end CF hosting. They're
very reliable. However they do not support CFFILE. (surprise, surprise)

Does anyone know of a good low-end host (100-150/year) that supports CFFILE.
I have a client for whom CFFILE would be perfect but I don't think that he
would go for paying substantially more for hosting than he is currently.

I, too, am in need of CF hosting for testing purposes, so I am benefiting
from the original question. But I do have one to add . . . can I expect
that CF hosts will utilize such allow CFDirectory and CFRegistry. And
should I expect that they have sandboxes enabled? I'm using sitehosting.net

RE: CF hosting needed

2000-09-17 Thread Steve Pierce

The reason many of those features are turned off is because of security
concerns. You have to balance shared hosting with good security while
providing good service. Hosting companies that just open up the entire
server are likely to be very unreliable.

Sandboxing is also only available under CF Enterprise which costs something
like $5,000 per server. So many hosting companies use Pro ($1,500) which
doesn't have sand boxing. If you need every feature turned on in CF, then
your best solution is to go with a dedicated or collocated server that you
have full control over and more importantly, no one else does.

RE: CF hosting needed

2000-09-17 Thread paul smith

Anyone have any comments on the CFFILE replacements in Allaire's tag
gallery, CFX_File & CFX_Secure_Functions?

It appears to me they introduce password protection, but not other
functions that would be nice such as directory restriction by
password, no *.EXE, etc, that would bring functionality up to
FTP capability.

Any other tags around?

best, paul

RE: CF hosting needed

2000-09-17 Thread Leong Yew

Paul,

I encountered this problem when I used a CF hosting service with these tags
disabled. For me the solution was simple. Since most CF hosts will be using
Windows NT, you can most certainly expect them to support ASP. All you'll
have to do is to write an ASP template using FileSystemObject object to
open a file, and then use CFHTTP to access that ASP template and to return
the file as cfhttp.content, which you can then manipulate as a string.

I have a partially written custom tag for this, and I can send this to you.
THat is, if I can find it...

Hope this helps.

Just as a word of warning, providers of ASP shared hosting who are concerned
about security will disable this object for obvious reasons.

RE: CF hosting needed

2000-09-17 Thread paul smith

Well, I'm on the hosting end of the equation.

My issue is a way to enable CFFILE-like function
for my customers without enabling any more security
problems than I already have with FTP. You've just
given me one more reason I'll never enable ASP on
my servers (apart from the fact I don't have the time
or patience to deal with more than one CF-like product).

They've actually been around for a while...but they seem to be kind of
low-key :) I just recently mentioned this list to one of their tech guys
who has been talking about MX with a great degree of trepidation.

I've been with them for over a year now (on the $99/yr CF package), and it's
pretty great. As I've mentioned before...not 99.9% uptime, but for the
price, you get a LOT.

CF Hosting space available

2003-05-29 Thread Kelly Matthews
Hey folks,
I have a server I am using to host my site and a couple client sites. I am
running
WIN 2k, Cold Fusion MX, Access and SQL 2000. I am looking to open up the
server to some hosting for
those who might be interested. I am only going to take on about 10 people.
If you are looking for some hosting space and need CF & SQL let me know
maybe we can work out a reasonable rate, based on what you need. Hosting
would include unlimited pop email, ftp access to the server and access to
SQL through enterprise manager. Drop me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if
you're in need of some hosting. Just trying to offset some of my costs.
Thank,
Kelly

RE: CF Hosting Suggestions

2003-01-22 Thread Joshua Miller
Don't know about the lowest cost, but HostMySite.com is one of the best
services I've found to date.

We've got dedicated servers there and they're great. We were with
Rackspace before but it was TOO expensive. HostMySite.com's service is
just as good, more personal and they're quite knowledgeable when it
comes to CF.

And no, I don't work there :)

ExpertHost, if you can tolerate the fact that they're hardly experts and
that they're a far cry from a "courteous" host.

Otherwise, you can email me off list and I can give you some options on
my server.

RE: CF Hosting Suggestions

2003-01-22 Thread Dowdell, Jason G
I use CFDynamics.com for all of my hosting needs.
Great space and features for the price. Support is
always timely and accurate. They are customer centric
and understand the intricacies of CF Hosting.

Many hosts don't really understand how to administer
a CF Server. Such was my experience with Advances.com

IMHO

RE: CF Hosting Suggestions

2003-01-22 Thread Russ
I don't doubt it. They started out great and have nose-dived. Not many
problems recently, but still see plenty of room for improvement.

Of the 3 times I've emailed the Cust. Support Managers, I've received no
responses, so maybe it's just me.
