MAX/CF Underground VI news - NO Halloween info

2004-10-27 Thread Michael Smith
In case you are going to MAX or CF_underground VI this weekend I spoke
to a New Orleans native about Halloween. Here is what they had to say:

By the way, if anyone coming to CF_Underground that is interested in looking at
costumes on Saturday or Sunday night, upper Frenchman Street is usually a good
spot as well as upper Decatur in the quarter to see costumes. Also Bourbon near
Jen aLafitte's Blacksmith Bar is a good spot too. More locals than tourists.
Also the gay area is fabulous (around Bourbon Street and St. Ann), but the bars'
cover prices are very expensive. The only goth bar in the area is the closest
thing we have to a fetish bar - it is at 1135 Decatur Street. Sometimes however,
the touristy Ann Rice Fans overrun the place on Halloween and rather ruin it.

Not sure about Halloween prices, but if anyone wants just a cheap place to drink
beer, Molly's on the Market is on Decatur. Also, the John in the Marigny (on
Frenchman) ,so named because of their toilet seat chairs, has extremely cheap
beer. Also 13 on Frenchman usually has good beer specials.
- Dawn Meisch, former CFUG co-manager New Orleans

PS Hope to see you in 4 days at CF_underground or MAX. Good luck in our
Halloween custome
competition if you are coming!

FLASH MX AND COLDFUSION MX (formally known as NEO)
-
There is no doubt -- it is a really good time to know ColdFusion. Since
our last newsletter, Macromedia has released the much-anticipated new
release of Flash MX. Macromedia has also released the mention of the
next version of ColdFusion. Previously referred to as the lead
character from the movie the Matrix NEO has been formally announced
as ColdFusion MX.

This is a direct Quote from the March 4th Press Release from Macromedia:

Macromedia ColdFusion MX, which can be
used in conjunction with Microsoft .NET,
Java application servers, and web services,
will provide developers with the fastest and
easiest way to create rich applications with
Macromedia Flash MX. In addition, developers
will be able to use a new server gateway technology
to build Macromedia Flash applications that work
directly with leading application servers and
web services.

http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/proom/pr/2002/flash_mx_apps.html

What does this mean and why, as ColdFusion developers, are we paying so
much attention to it? Using the new server gateway technology
ColdFusion MX can now be leveraged even more to work with Flash MX
applications.. Ok, its a bit vague, but trust me when I say that the
CFNorth conference will really make it all make sense and will
definitely leave you stunned with the possibilities of what these two
technologies can provide.
~

 EXHIBITORS Give-A-Ways
---
CFNorth will have over 12 exhibit booths and a tonne of give-aways.
Exhibitor booths are a fantastic way for you to really explore what this
ColdFusion community is made up of. ColdFusion consultants, cool
Developer tools, applications that you can incorporate into your own
products, lead authors of many of the ColdFusion books will all
available for you to interact and talk with.

If you are on the borderline of choosing an application server (such as
ColdFusion) then talking with these people will give you a great
perspective onto what ColdFusion can offer your organization. Its not
just about ColdFusion, remember. ColdFusion is the foundation for a lot
of awesome products and services, and these exhibitors will demonstrate
the real power of what ColdFusion is all about.

If you have been to any of the ColdFusion User Group meetings, you know
we always give away lots of stuff. Well, here is a preview of just some
of the give-a-ways from some of our sponsors, that you could win, just
for coming!
- Very cool Macromedia Bags
- ColdFusion Application Server from Macromedia
- Flash MX from Macromedia
- Free Internet Hosting from NI Solutions Group
- FuseTalk from e-Zonemedia
- Adalon application design tools from Synthis
- Load Testing from OpenDemand
- Swift3D Animation Software for Flash MX from Electric Rain
- ColdFusion and Flash Books plus conference discounts
- Content Management systems from PaperThin and Ektron
- Consulting Services and more!

CF Flash: was NEWS: Allaire and Macromedia to Merge

2001-01-16 Thread Dick Applebaum

I am no expert, but it appears to me that the best thing from a
developer's point of view is a Flash/CF combo...

We (developers) will have have an integrated Client-Side Server-Side
environment that runs on any platform...

Gone are (or will be) the need to:

design several versions of a site (one for each browser/platform)

design for the lowest common denominator of features supported by
the most popular browsers platforms

Compensate for the presentation differences for each browser.

Flash offers a lot of multimedia goodies... often lost in this glitz
is the ability to display/manipulate simple pages/forms/menus, etc.
efficiently, and identically on any browser/platform with a single
set of code. (Dave Watts pointed this out to me).

It means that I, a developer, can control the application from both ends...

Productivity

The best thing I see right now, from a development point of view.

What happens to Studio Homesite, would these wonderful applications get
swollowed up by the UltraDev or would it become more interactive with it.
But from a coding point of view, the integration of the products would mean
a very heavy competitor to Microsoft and their .net product.
