Re: Coldfusion 9 certification

2012-03-29 Thread Russ Michaels

I personally do not rate most certifications or even consider them them
when employing someone, nor do most other employers I know.
All a certification usually means is that you can answer a bunch of
questions and pass a test. I know several people who had Advanced certs in
CF (95% pass) but were still rubbish developers.
Same applies to any cert really. All the test really does is test your
knowledge of the language, not how to write good code, trouble shoot
problems etc.
Most savvy employers will get you to take their own competency test to
prove your skills. The only ones who really make decisions based of
certifications are the non technical ones who have no other way to asses
your skills.
Of course if the cost of taking the certification is not an issue for you,
then there is no harm in doing it, so you may as well.

If there are any other employers on here perhaps they will pipe up also.

I think I've found that certifications tend to have more weight in
organizations that do not have the ability to judge your skill level
themselves. These are folks like HR departments, recruiters, and middle
manager types who don't really understand how to measure your abilities
themselves. I also tend to see it more frequently in larger organizations
(since they are more likely to have those folks).

At the end of the day, certifications usually won't hurt you except for the
time and money that may be required to study for and take the test. They
might help you a lot, a little or not at all.

...but the OP's stated reason for getting the certification wasn't for
employment reasons, it was for self education. So, for that, I think it's
a fine goal.

Re: Coldfusion 9 certification

2012-03-29 Thread Mike Chabot

It used to be the case that taking the official Allaire/Macromedia
ColdFusion training classes were the best preparation for the
certification exams, since the answers to all the questions were
covered in those official courses. I would assume that is still true.
You might see if you can convince your employer to let you take these
courses since they are good.

You can pick up a used copy of the ColdFusion MX 7 certification study
guide book written by Ben Forta, which is a good way to prepare at
much less cost.

You could also take some of the independent certification tests first,
like the one Brainbench offers.

If your main goal is to learn features that you haven't used before,
read the developer guide and the manual cover to cover, followed by
the Ben Forta books.

Good luck,
Mike Chabot

I guess everyone has their own experiences In mine, and for those I
know and have spoke with, certifications don't get you the job offer
directly, but they definitely help in two big ways towards getting the job.

1) getting through HR and/or the hiring manager onto the desk of the person
who makes the decision
2) getting into the interview with the same

Adobe's coldfusion ace is the only one I know of if you've programmed
in it a few years you wont have to study for more than a few weeks to learn
the pedagogy.
