New Virus Warning?

2001-09-21 Thread Brunt, Michael

This was just circulated internally to us, it may only apply to our network
but just in case: -

E-mail users are propagating a hoax message that warns users of permanent
hard disk destruction and the removal of all Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL
files) if they open an e-mail called FAMILY PICTURES.
Virus Administrator requests that all e-mail users delete and not propagate
this e-mail, which is a hoax virus warning. The subject line of this hoax
message reads: Attention all Internet Users.
Thank you for your assistance,

Mike Brunt

Seems as if people forgets that this is a Cold Fusion mailing list.

At the rate this list is going, next topics would be:

How to make Thanksgiving Dinner.
What to buy for Christmas.
Who cares about what someone is doing this weekend.

My two cents ... take it or leave... does not matter to me

Opps, my bad. I made a typo. What I meant to say, is IMHO Randy Adkins,
the guy who flames some one who posted a virus alert to cf-talk, is a moron.

Is that better? Did I spell it right?

I apologize to the community for wasting people time with this, but just
pisses me off that this guy Randy thinks that he has the right to tell
cftalk users not to post things like virus alerts to the list. That's just
plain stupid. Am I way out of line here??

Imp Atten: New Virus Info

But Prevention is better than Cure

Author: John Erickson at AIRSEA-POST-OFFICE

1. There is a new virus - WOBBLER. It will arrive on e-mail
titled CALIFORNIA. IBM and AOL have announced that it is very
powerful, more so than Melissa, there is no remedy. It will eat all your
information on the hard drive and also destroys Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Do not open anything with this title and
please pass this message on to all your contacts and anyone who uses your
e-mail facility. Not many people seem to know about this yet so propagate
it as fast as possible.

2. If you receive an e-mail titled "Win A. Holiday" DO NOT
open it. It will erase everything on your hard drive. Forward this letter
out to as many people as you can. This is a new, very
malicious virus and not many people know about it. This information was
announced yesterday morning from Microsoft.

I know with all the nifty new WORMS that have recently

I know with all the nifty new WORMS that have recently
plagued the list and millions of other computers, you might
be inclined to spread every freakin' email like this you
get, and thanks for the thought, but.

PLEASE actually research the warning before spaming it over
gods green earth and into our mailboxes.

Thanks :)

 1. There is a new virus - WOBBLER. It will arrive on
e-mail
titled CALIFORNIA. IBM and AOL have announced that it is
very
powerful, more so than Melissa, there is no remedy. It
will eat all your
information on the hard drive and also destroys Netscape
Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Do not open anything with
this title and
please pass this message on to all your contacts and
anyone who uses your
e-mail facility. Not many people seem to know about this
yet so propagate
 it as fast as possible.

 2. If you receive an e-mail titled "Win A. Holiday" DO NOT
open it. It will erase everything on your hard drive.
Forward this letter
out to as many people as you can. This is a new, very
malicious virus and not many people know about it. This
information was
 announced yesterday morning from Microsoft.

 Thank You,

Good point, never thought of a virus hoax as an actual virus
almost in its own right, duplication through operator fear.

It's the "erase everything on your harddrive" that always clues me in. A
virus would have to be running to erase something and it can't erase
something that is running, therefore it can't erase itself (or the programs

inexact (read incorrect) and that calls into question the validity of the

Re: Imp Atten: New Virus Info

2000-05-08 Thread Steve Reich

It's the "erase everything on your harddrive" that always clues me in. A
virus would have to be running to erase something and it can't erase
something that is running, therefore it can't erase itself (or the
programs
required to run it). Any warning that says it erases everything must be
inexact (read incorrect) and that calls into question the validity of the
 message.

Actually that's not exactly true. Files can be queued for deletion when they
are no longer being shared (used). A file can also delete itself in this
fashion (that's why you are asked to reboot after you uninstall certian
software programs). You could have all your files queued up and once you
reboot, they would be gone. I've never actually seen something like this in
action but it is theoretically possible. The best protection is to... all
together now "not open untrusted attachments" and also to read your
email using plain text. Using HTML email is not a very safe practice if you
are concerned with viruses. I also have my Nortons set to update my virus
definitions every morning. By the time I got the LOVEBUG message, I already
had the fix for it.

I could write a "proof of concept" app in VB if anyone wants to test
this...;-)

Steve

Well, to be accurate, command.com would have to be able to delete itself,
wouldn't it? Not that I'm going to try delete it to check Besides, the
deletion method that you're talking about would require windows, since it
is windows that controls the deletion. That would still be programs
necessary to delete the virus.

But I think this topic is pretty much dead anyway.

Outlook users should set their security level to "high" to help minimise the
risk of this happening (go to the "Tools" menu, click on "Macros" and then
"Security"). This prevents un-signed macros from running.

Cheers!

Your not thinking "outside the box". Windows is just a software program
itself. You can delete your command.com file right now and it will throw it
into the recycle bin like any other file... try it (you can then restore it
again). I thought command.com was just a gateway to DOS from the Windows
environment anyway. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. It's a safe bet
that if you can think it, it can be done.
