RE: MX Hosting

2002-12-06 Thread Josh Trefethen
Yeah...I agree. It is important to judge a host on what is really
important, rack, pipe, power, and service...as well as reputation.

I run my own small but incredibly reliable hosting company and was
offered a good some to host a huge amount of adult content on my
servers, but turned it down because I don't want my name (my company or
myself) associated with that. It was hard to turn down the account, or
that is, the money that would have been gained, but I am happy with my
decision.

I believe they also offer ASP Hosting, etc. Seems to me as if they
templated the sites out and then went with what was most efficient and
cost-effective to continue on with instead of simply rebuilding in each
technology.

I guess it just depends upon how you want to take a look at it--from the
perspective of them providing content and ratings about hosts from
people using them, or based upon how much excessive time and effort that
they wanted to put into pleasing everyone.

Kinda sounds smarmy on my part, but I can kind of feel their pain on
that one. It's almost as if they're trying to help out the CF Folks and
they're getting blasted for it, which seems really rather
anti-community, imho.

RE: MX Hosting

2002-12-06 Thread Tony Weeg
I thinkthe answer lies in the url .php?
man, if I was touting cf hosts, and I was hoping people
were going to support me, wouldn't I want to be using cf myself?

not knocking whoever is hosting it,
just kinda doesn't make sensethats all.

RE: MX Hosting

2002-12-05 Thread Russ
We can kill my conversation of this now.

I wasn't trying to start a debate; was looking for recommendations and I
see that I've poked into the wrong forum for such a thing. I'll
continue my research externally and apologize for noising-up the list.

Not all of that is entirely true, and they should have to provide this
anyway. Personnel aren't required if they provide the ability to log-in
to the power outlet and reboot the power that way. But, that's support,
additionally, and not something I would consider to be part of the
package.

"How much would you be willing to pay for this 1994 Red Yugo?"

Why not tell me what you're willing to sell it for.

2002-12-05 Thread samcfug
Just how dirt cheap?

The provider will have to furnish the space, IP number, the connectivity, the
power, and the physical security. Additionally must have personnel available
to do the services only a physical presence can do, such as a re-boot.

What would you be willing to pay for this?

That's all they have, for CFMX. DMV also runs quite a few other CF servers from 4.0 +.
Not sure about the
though, you'd have to call a business support tech (sales staff not in the loop on

Not likely. There is simply no way to look into an object to see what it
does, just like cfexecute has no way of knowing what an executable does.
Both of them had the same problem on previous versions (well, they could
have fixed it for OS Sandboxes by making it use CreateProcessAsUser()
instead of CreateProcess() (see MPSB01-11), but OS Sandbxes are no
longer working).

CFObject is not safe for a shared environment. There is code which allows
you to display the factory and all of it properties and even manipulate
values.

Re: MX Hosting

2002-12-05 Thread Neil H.
I think you guys would be pleasantly surprised with CFMX hosting at my place
www.HostMySite.com

We recently got CFMX running VERY stable. We cooked up some things and with
some help from MacroMedia's support we got things running very well.

You can take a look and let me know if you have any questions.

Yuck DMV i nevered liked them when i lived up in maryland never very
reliable. Hopefully they have improved since i've left.

Bluewaterhosting.com is going to be purchasing some MX licenses soon enough
for dedicated servers or colocation, we currently have CF5 but we'll be
upgrading to MX once we're happy that all the major issues are worked out to
OUR satisfaction

RE: MX Hosting

2002-12-04 Thread Russ
Just a heads-up...

We've been using ExpertHost for a little while and used to be fairly
happy with them, but lately, the customer service is borderline
demeaning. The processes to accomplish simple tasks get convoluted and
they get to be less than amused with helping out the paying customers.

In fact, I was flat-out told "You're on a shared box, this type of thing
happens" when I queried into why my email was down for almost 5 hours
and clients were getting bounced emails, and when I asked what type of a
reflection on MY customer service that type of answer would be to my
clients, I received an even snottier, "Well, we're looking into it,
someone might be sending SPAM".

I emailed just yesterday to advise of the issue and haven't so much as
heard a peep from them, and it's sad that things have deteriorated so
much that I'm sharing it on the list, but you should be aware of them
and should consider them and make your own decision.

Thanks to everyone else who posted alternatives. I'll be checking into
those shortly and making a transfer myself.

Best,

Russ

I can tell you who to stay away from. ExpertHost.com. Since they went to
CFMX, there has been a SEVERE performance issue with their servers, and
their once superior customer service has deteriorated to the point to where
I was forced to buy my own server and co-lo it. Since then, my uptimes have
been wonderful, and the speed of my sites are very very fast.

RE: MX Hosting

2002-12-04 Thread Lee Fuller
Funny.. We've had a whole influx of customers coming from them to us.
Not sure why... And I'm not saying anything bad about them. But it's
odd that this name popped up on my email again.

Hmm...

I agree - but I might wait until updater 2 is out... Even Crystal Tech
is having quite a few problems getting MX to behave (just see how often
www.depressedpress.com is down lately...) ;^)

However I still think that they're among the top choices as things
stand.
