unless you are migrating from windows to linux though I wouldn't recommend
doing this. SQL Server is the far superior solution, easier to use, easier
to manage, better client tools, better backup options, generally more
reliable.
This opinion is based on 10 years hosting both in a shared hosting
environment by the way, hundreds of databases for hundreds of customers.

It's not up to me :( The company is switching because the hosting company
convinced the previous developer that it was a good idea.

While I have great respect for Russ, I respectfully and completely
disagree with just about everything he said there.

Not that you even asked for the lists opinion on what DB solution is
better, but I just wanted to make it known that there are plenty of
folks out here with huge amounts of respect for MySQL.

Facebook runs on MySQL, so it can't be all bad, right? ;)

There's also SQLYog Enterprise. It has a conversion tool for this as well.

Re: Moving from MSSQL to mySQL

2010-12-01 Thread Russ Michaels

I didn't say it was BAd Jordan, I would not be stupid enough to say that as
it is clearly a very popular and well used RDBMS.
However most people just use the free edition of MySQL because it is free
and are not even aware that there is a free edition of SQL server too called
SQL Server express.
I would encourage anyone to try out both rather than take mine or anyone
else word for it.
Just to backup my previous comment though, in many years of running both, we
have very rarely had any SQL Server issues, however I cannot say the same
about MySQL. We have have numerous customers with corrupted MySQL databases,
this has never happened on any MSSQL server. A single mysql database can
also easily cane the server and cause 100% cpu usage and cause it to become
unresponsive, never had such an issue on MSSQL.
So take form that what you will.

I use this product - works flawlessly. When moving large amounts of data, just
be sure to go into settings and use NO skin. It bogs it down. Otherwise it
works beauifully...maintaining PK's, FK's, indexes, etc etc.
