Ummm We use ColdFusion and have our site translated in Chinese and
Japanese. The way to use unicode in CF is to store the unicode values in
the tables. You can use Frontpage to convert the unicode characters into
uni values easily.

RE: OMG!!!!!

2000-09-29 Thread Mark Johnson

Ditto. We have done lots of work with unicode, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew,
Greek, Russian, etc. SQL 7 handles the data fine and CF has no problems
interpreting it at all. The only issues we have ever ran into have been
with Unicode and JavaScript, not CF.

Based on 3 different Japanese sites that we've been developing currently,
we've run into ZERO issues with storing japanese characters into SQL 7, and
doing standard searches, parsing, etc. with that text.

I've seen UNICODE issues mentioned in this list, but we've certainly not run
into any issues SO far (knock on wood).. Perhaps VERITY might present an
interesting situation, but we're not using that, so can't comment on it. :)

Hi...thanks for your reply.

but i am confusedwhere is the actual problem with japanese?

And yes I will just have people entering japanese into forms, submitting and
have it go into an access 2000 database.
And then later I have the japanese text displayed within normal cfoutputs
and database queries.

Do I need to do anything with access? Or SQL Server (because I intend to
migrate everything to there soon).

RE: OMG!!!!!

2000-09-28 Thread Mike Nimer

It's tricky but it is possible, But if all you your doing is outputting
Japanese text from a database, or inserting Japanese text from a form
submission into a database it works fine. hard coded text in your HTML also
works fine.

I'm not sure about the localization functions (lsDateFormat(), etc..). And
some of the ReFind() type of functions are a little tricky. For instance if
you want to find a space in a text string, you will have to find the ascii
code for the Japanese space, not the standard space that your keyboard
types. And I'm not sure if Verity has support for Japanese languages as
well.

I would also recommend you run the Japanese versions of your software (CF,
Studio, Database, OS) while you develop and when you go into production.

But as long you understand what works and what doesn't before you start, you
can architect your site to avoid the few pieces that may not work as
expected.

As for the other Romanian languages, they all work just fine.

Currently I'm in Japan helping a customer launch a Japanese Spectra site.
And everything is going nice and smooth.

HTH,
---Mike

Because Unicode uses TWO bytes for each character in order to encode large

Some languages require more than the 256 (2^8) characters possible with only
8-bit representations. NT itself (for the most part) operates internally in
16-bit unicode and has for years and years and years. Having CF still back
in the dark ages of 7 & 8-bit ansi teletypes :) is a bit embarassing
frankly.

If you are looking for a string of characters why does it matter what
language they are?

Why can't you refer to a library of characters for each language?

No not really. As I understand it CF doesn't support Unicode. I am 100% Cold Fusion
but I also have a project coming up that needs to support Japanese among other
difficult languages... I don't know what I am going to do yet.

thai, etc. works fine provided its english + one langauge
per page. chinese & japanese are tougher but i guess
workable. once you get into multiple langauges its unicode
or nothing. if you're careful, you can use unicode text from a
db w/cf. in any case, unicode & cf5 were once metioned
together on the same day.

Re: OMG!!!!!

2000-09-28 Thread John Forrester

Sounds like someone has not analysed the requirements very well. We have
been using CF for over four years. Certainly there are problems with
character representations at times ... nothing that we have not been able to
work around. Once and awhile someone tries to code in ASP. So far whether
from lack of preparation or time none of the projects have been neither
particularly successful or easy to maintain.

Have a look at our site http://www.ancitel.it or http://www.anci.it .

Search functions with verity have never worked brillantly in Italian but
that could also be that we have not studied it well.

Most likely that annoying lack of full (or any) unicode support.
