Re: OT: Video format
1) Real Video People must have the Real Player plug-in, which is free and almost everyone already has it. You must use their "Real Producer" which is also free (or Media Cleaner Pro which is not) to convert a video to the Real Format. You must host the video on a "Real Video" server, which is not free, although many hosting companies provide it as part of the package. You need to be aware of the number of "streams" you are supporting, which means the number of simultaneous viewers it can handle. Real is arguably slightly ahead of Microsoft Media in terms of video quality, bandwidth usage, and "intelligent streaming" which means changing the quality in real time to adjust to the network conditions. 2) Microsoft Media People must have the Microsoft Media player, which everyone using Windows does. You must use their tools to convert a video to ASF format. You must host on a Microsoft Media Services server, which comes bundled with Win2K. MSMedia also uses the concept of "streams" but since the server comes with Win2K and you dont pay extra for more streams it doesnt really matter. These two are "streaming" video formats. That means that the viewer does not have to wait for it to download to start watching. It will "stream" it to the player in real time. It will also be (somewhat) intelligent about raising and lowering the quality of the video to match the available bandwidth. 3) QuickTime Not really a streaming video format. You start to download it, and it starts playing when it has enough downloaded. Quality is up to you since you really aren't trying to fit it into any particular amount of bandwidth (remember, its not real time, so more quality means a longer wait to view it). 4) Other... like a CGI that pushes a multipart video file, or a Java app that displays a video, or another video format like VDO. All different... My recommendation is find out what you can easily HOST first. Make your decision based on that. Do you have Real Streams available? Do you have a MSMedia server available? Remember that video uses ALOT of resources on the server and ALOT of bandwidth. 55 simultaneous viewers of a low-bandwidth video will fill a full T-1. FYI, Quicktime 4 does have a streaming format. The method that you're referring to above is called "Progressive Download". You can do both. How do you get the video from tape to digital? best, paul At 12:46 PM 10/3/00 -0400, you wrote: >You must use their "Real Producer" which is also free (or Media Cleaner >Pro which is not) to convert a video to the Real Format. -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.
Re: OT: Video format
You need to have a capture card installed on your machine. We use Broadway cards, but they cost $700 a pop. I would recommend the Osprey 200 card from Viewcast. They cost about $200 each, I believe. Check their website to be sure. Also, Winnov Videum, I think it works with both Real and Windows Media, $200? a pop. There are other cards probably for cheaper, but these are very good quality cards for the price. Re: OT: Video format
You need a video capture card on your PC. If you want really good quality I recommend the Videom or Osprey. Cheap USB video capture devices don't give very good quality, and the two I mentioned are not that expensive. You play the tape on a high quality VCR and plug the VCR into the video capture card. You run the video software on the PC and it takes the video straight off the video capture card. FirstClass? Wow... there's a name from the past. I used to use that for a BBS I ran in 1993. As for Mac/PC... I ran some Mac mail and DNS servers and they were pretty bullet-proof. Not a lot of features, but fast and easy to implement and ran like crazy. But the MacOS wouldn't allow multiple IPs and virtual hosting was tough, so eventually they became relics in my garage. --Doug -Original Message- From: Simon Horwith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 03, 2000 1:26 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: OT: Video format I tend to agree with that statement, though I feel it's my duty to point out that there are always exceptions. Re: OT: Video format
Well, I got the Osprey 200 card and I _appear_ to have the card capturing video from my VCR, but when I check the properties of the saved file (right click, etc) I'm told "This file is invalid or corrupted" Any suggestions? Osprey support had me install current drivers but this was no help, and they're slow to respond. Any suggestions? best, paul At 02:40 PM 10/3/00 -0400, you wrote: >You need a video capture card on your PC. >If you want really good quality I recommend the Videom or Osprey. >Cheap USB video capture devices don't give very good quality, and the two >I mentioned are not that expensive. > >You play the tape on a high quality VCR and plug the VCR into the video >capture card. >You run the video software on the PC and it takes the video straight off >the video capture card. > > > >At 10:50 AM 10/3/00 -0700, paul smith wrote: > >How do you get the video from tape to digital? > > > >best, paul > > > >At 12:46 PM 10/3/00 -0400, you wrote: > >>You must use their "Real Producer" which is also free (or Media Cleaner > >>Pro which is not) to convert a video to the Real Format. > > > >- > - > >Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ > >To Unsubscribe visit > http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk > or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' > in the body. > > >--- >Peter Theobald, Chief Technology Officer >LiquidStreaming http://www.liquidstreaming.com >[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Phone 1.212.545.1232 x204 Fax 1.212.545.0938 > >-- >Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ >To Unsubscribe visit >http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk or >send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in >the body. ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: OT: Video format
I just went through this also.. first thing to check is the setting of the saved file. There are many different formats, but the real producer is finicky as to which it reads. Try saving as an uncompressed avi, and play around with the settings. Next go to the mgisoft.com site and download the demo of videowave 4. It can capture video using your card, add titles, sound, etc. Then save in a real video format directly. It works for about 30 days. Try it, and if it works for you, buy it.. it is less than $100 Al >Well, I got the Osprey 200 card and I _appear_ to have the card capturing >video from my VCR, but when I check the properties of the saved file (right >click, etc) I'm told "This file is invalid or corrupted" > >Any suggestions?
