Subject: OT: DHTML Menu - Memory Leaks

I'm looking for a low cost DHTML Cascading menu solution. I'm
replacing one
that leaks memory severely.

I've considered the following...

http://milonic.co.uk/menu

After a bit of testing, I'm finding that this one has a smaller memory
leak
in IE. I'm happy with this DHTML menu system (it's very fast, easy,
and
configurable), but I'm worried about memory leaks. Has anyone done
testing
on the Macromedia Fireworks DHTML menus in regards to memory? I can't
figure out if the browser or the code is to blame. I'm also not
certain if
memory leaks are a norm when using menus like this.

Help! :)

Thanks,

Try this:
http://software.xfx.net/utilities/dmbuilder/

This is the same thing Iomega uses on their site. We bought and are using
on a couple now. It works pretty well.

RE: OT DHTML Menu - Memory Leaks

2002-02-08 Thread Matt Robertson

HVMenus is free only for non-commercial use. The author asks a donation
of $25 for commercial projects. The Milonic guy asks for a link or $30
annually for a link-free site. I prefer Milonic, myself.

Before I got up to speed w/Milonics I was going to use/support HVmenus,
but opted not to because 1)it doesn't wrap long menu titles and 2) the
author requested cash, as in currency, as his preferred payment method.
While I made up some code to wrap the titles, the cash thing was a fatal
problem.

Dynamic Drive has an old ver of his menu. The latest is at the author's
site at

Time for me to jump in...

About 6-8 months ago I did the bih DHTML menu search and found DHTML CoolMenus. I
grabbed the
script (which is free aslong as the author commented message stays intact) and wrapped
it into a
custom tag. So if anyone is interested contact me off list and I'll Zip it and fire
it off. It's
not as well commented as I would like, but I'm sure you all can figure it out ;-)

Just want to point out that this product does not yet support building your
menus dynamically. You have to pre-build the menu items statically in the
GUI tool. While the creator has been talking about a dynamic version to be
released "soon," I've read that for two months now and haven't seen
anything.

Overall, it's a great product though. We bought it (very cheap) on the
premise that a version that supports building dynamic menus would come out
soon and the upgrade would be free (they are for life). It is super-fast,
and, more importantly, completely cross-browser compatible, and not with
just IE and NetscapeMozilla, Opera and others too.

Dave.
