RE: Sending Faxes through Cold Fusion (SOFTphone/VoIP ? )

I am in the process of setting this up now. But I can't seem to find a
decent FAX server for a Windows 2000 box.

I would prefer an open source project.

Hylafax server appears to be linux and solaris only

I haven't tried, but hoping someone here can confirm this will work.
Can I install Fax software, a softphone and use VoIP (w/outbound
gateway) to
deliver faxes?

Recommendations?

I do have a need for this application for a project.

Looks like an interesting bit of software, let me know how you get on if you

Thanks Terry, the only thing I could find with that was a utility to convert

Where i work, we have a faxserver.
To send faxes, we create either RTF or PDF attachments and
then do CFFILE write, to the faxserver. Basically we write
to the faxservers control file. It takes certain
parameters, such as the Destination Fax Number, and
Attachment. The attachment is the RTF or PDF we generate.

The faxserver should come with instructions on what its
 control file requires.

If you can convert the HTML to PDF (see iText or fop)
you can install acrobat reader on the server and print
  the pdf by running:

  cmd.exe start /C acrord32 /p /h FILE.pdf

We're running CFMX 7, so wrapping our HTML reports with
 CFDOCUMENT might
make this a viable solution assuming we can get it to format
 everything
 correctly. Thanks!

Hey all -
I have a situation where I need to replace a current application (a web

except for one item: I need the ability to send a fax from CF.

Does it have to be a fax? What about sending the data to a locally installed
printer?

I'd love to know if there is a simple way to do that. I'm in a situation
where I need to run several reports (generated in HTML) and they need to be
printed on whatever the default printer is on the server (Windows 2003).
I've done a lot of searching, and I've seen the redirect to lpt1 in a batch
file posts and well, that won't work for sending html files.

Essentially I need a service that can run on the server that I can feed a
list of URLs to and have it render them, and then send them on over to the
default printer. Anyone have ideas?

This is a Windows-only solution (at least just tested and being used on

Actually, htmldoc allows you to convert html pages to postscript as well, so
if you have postscript drivers installed for your printers you can simply
copy the .ps file to any local or network printer via the command line. You
can even use move from the command line which will take care of sending the
file to the printer and then deleting it (although there is a caveat with
using move, see below). I set this system up a few years back for a
non-profit client of ours. It's an intranet system that allows them to
print reports, letter runs and billing statements directly to any printer on
their network. It also gives them the option to generate a PDF, which is
nice when they are working remotely and need to view or print something
locally.

The batch file runs the html file through htmldoc and then moves the output
..ps file to the printer: move \\server\printername. For some reason I've
noticed that moving the file stopped working on the server after some period
of time, so I had to change the batch file so it would copy the .ps file to
the printer and then delete it. That's neither here nor there, though, but
maybe it'll help someone in the future!

2005-11-17 Thread Scott Stewart
I'd be careful with HTMLDoc, it doesn't support shrink to fit, it also
doesn't compensate for IE's tendency to print off the right side of the
page. This is a pretty well known bug, and they had no knowledge of it.

Since generating PDF's is essentially a print process, the bug falls over
into the generated PDF. I had to abandon HTMLDoc because of this.

I'd be careful with HTMLDoc, it doesn't support shrink to fit, it also
doesn't compensate for IE's tendency to print off the right
 side of the
page. This is a pretty well known bug, and they had no
 knowledge of it.

Since generating PDF's is essentially a print process, the
 bug falls over
into the generated PDF. I had to abandon HTMLDoc because of this.

Actually, all document formats used in the application I mentioned are
fixed-width and are not problematic. It's good you pointed this out,
though, because it took some experimenting to get the formatting right
because of the page cut-offs in some cases. Different documents in this
case require different margins and formatting.

One thing I absolutely hate about htmldoc is it's lack of support for CSS.
It's quite a mature product in that it's been around for quite some time and
it's generally fast (as long as you don't generate a thousand-page pdf
file!), so it's still useful in certain situations for us. Now, I
definitely wouldn't use it in an environment where it was under any sort of
significant load, but that's just based on my experience with it. In that
case I'd probably go with ActivePDF products (server and webgrabber) for
HTML to PDF conversion.

Re: Sending Faxes through Cold Fusion

2005-11-17 Thread Ali Awan
Where i work, we have a faxserver.
To send faxes, we create either RTF or PDF attachments and then do CFFILE
write, to the faxserver. Basically we write to the faxservers control file.
It takes certain parameters, such as the Destination Fax Number, and
Attachment. The attachment is the RTF or PDF we generate.

The faxserver should come with instructions on what its control file requires.

HTH
Ali

If you can convert the HTML to PDF (see iText or fop)
you can install acrobat reader on the server and print
 the pdf by running:

 cmd.exe start /C acrord32 /p /h FILE.pdf

We're running CFMX 7, so wrapping our HTML reports with CFDOCUMENT might
make this a viable solution assuming we can get it to format everything
correctly. Thanks!

Hi Tom

Could you go into more detail about how you would use HylaFax with CF to send
and receive faxes?

Thanks

I haven't tried, but hoping someone here can confirm this will work.
Can I install Fax software, a softphone and use VoIP (w/outbound gateway) to
deliver faxes?

Recommendations?

I do have a need for this application for a project.

Hey all -

I have a situation where I need to replace a current application (a web

except for one item: I need the ability to send a fax from CF.

Does anybody have some suggestions or links that would assist in sending a

Thank you for your time in advance -

I was able to send faxes from Cf using Protofax software very easily.
http://www.protonet.com/ . The company I was working with chose this one
because they had CF tags available.
I found that Protofax's features (such as recieving an incoming fax from a
queue directory, or an e-mail box, etc..) were available in many fax programs
and the custom tag code was trivial. We ended up not even using it.

Combine the ability for CF to generate PDF files and email them with a
fax server that watches an email folder and sends faxes from the
attcahments.

Check out Black Ice for a simple example.
