Any thoughts on what caused this and > what I can do to rectify the situation? That's the SmartHeap DLL, which CF uses to manage memory, as Howie noted. You might want to make sure you've turned off CF 4.5 before attempting the upgrade. You might also want to make sure you don't have any conflicting versions. In addition to searching for SHSMP.DLL, you might also search for SHW32.DLL, which is another name for the library (I suppose that's the non-SMP version of it). If you've installed any other applications (services, typically, I'd guess) which might use this, they may have installed a different version. Re: Upgrading to CF 5...
That DLL is a heap manager that (I assume) CF uses internally. Where are you seeing these errors? It's possible that an older version of the DLL is on your system and does not have an internal function that is required by CF. I have two on my system - one in my CF backup folder (version is 5.0.0.0) and one in the CF bin folder. The one in the CF bin folder is a later one and is 117k in size and has a version of 6.0.1.3. Do a search of your system for all occurances of shsmp.dll and also make sure that the 6.0.1.3 version is the one in your cf\bin folder. If you have older versions in your cf\bin folder or in your windows system folder then that could be causing the problem.
