im running appache CF and PHP on mandrake..
extremely stable, fast, AND reliable.
plus I can choose to use any FREE and very cool, secure, constantly updated
databases.
plus webmin, telnet, ssh, vnc, netsaint basically cover all of the
administration tools
you would ever need.

Fortunately, Apache is so simple to work with, you can save your money.
Simply read the httpd.conf file, which will explain nearly everything you
need to know, at least for basic things like configuring virtual servers.
For advanced stuff, like setting up SSL, you might need to read other
things.

For what it's worth, an Apache-using friend of mine (whose opinion I
respect) didn't care for the O'Reilly Apache book at all.

Actually, now that you mention it, I forgot about that EAPI thing going
on. I get the error on startup (only when using the OpenSSL compiled
version) about the module, but it's been running fine and we've been
hitting it pretty hard.

What's the latest on the replacement module?

Which version of apache are you running and what platform? I have found
that SSL on win32 with 1.3.20 apache required an EAPI Cold Fusion module and
MM has not yet made it available (though they said that they would after the

RE: cf and apache

Does anyone have some numbers on how well CF works on Apache, I would love
to not have to install an update for MS every 2 days, but I have never seen
any numbers comparing the 2. I don't want to sacrifice speed though, since I
haven't had any problems with MS since I took off all the mappings except
for CF.

RE: cf and apache

2001-09-21 Thread Jeremy Allen

I have never had a problem with it either.

To support my argument, from the FAQ about
windows

"Warning: Apache on NT has not yet been optimized for performance. Apache
still performs best, and is most reliable on Unix platforms. Over time NT
performance has improved, and great progress is being made in the upcoming
version 2.0 of Apache for the Windows platforms. Folks doing comparative
reviews of webserver performance are still asked to compare against Apache
on a Unix platform such as Solaris, FreeBSD, or Linux."

Now it also says everything prior to 1.3.15 should
be considered beta quality. I realize it is stable
and I have never had ANY problems with Apache on
my windows machine either. I would still be wary
in a windows environment with Apache if your seeing
scalability or stability issues. They even say it
is "most reliable" on Unix platforms implying there
may not be equal reliability on a Windows platform.

Thanks

RE: cf and apache

2001-09-21 Thread Jeremy Allen

Apache does not officialy support Apache Web Server on windows.
Apache was designed for Unix from the ground up, it is just
incredibly portable so it made its way to windows.

Consider it (really good) beta quality software.

I love it, and use it on my development machine.
Although if memory serves me... there were some problems with scalability
on Windows units. I can't speak from experience, nor can I point to
numbers though.

Works great so long as you do not need SSL. Been running it for almost 3
years without a problem.

How much experience do people have with CF and Apache? Anything to be aware
of if switching from IIS. We are just about to buy a new box and with all
these nightmares people are having with nimba etc thought it might be a good
idea.

Is the CF service running as a user which can access those mapped drives? By
default, CF runs within the local system security context, which doesn't
have rights to the network.

Actually, this isn't necessarily so. Under heavier load, IIS has both worked
better and consumed less memory, in my experience. I've used both to teach
the Allaire Performance Tuning class, and Apache would break under load much
more quickly.

Although I'm a fan of Apache, and use it frequently for personal
development, I'd recommend against using it on NT if you expect any serious
traffic. In my (admittedly limited, non-production) experience, you'll start
getting Winsock connection errors under heavy load.

I'd recommend using IIS on NT or Win2K.

Apache Runs pretty well with CF on NT. Apache uses less memory than IIS,
that's for sure.

Oops, wrong thread. :)

I've tried the Outlook object on our intranet and it seems to work great.
However, I do wonder if this will pose any security risks.
