Re: HTTP Compression with CF7
There is definitely more overhead on both ends, and with the speed of connections increasing, compression is becoming less about performance and more about saving your bandwidth usage allotment. Compression is not a huge resource draw, so probably worth enabling in most scenarios, even though the end user experience won't be drastically different (unless you're serving a lot of huge text files). If server resources are an issue, it's trivial to do the compression on proxy/gateway servers instead of your web/app servers (and you can buy hardware just for this purpose). cheers, barneyb On 4/25/07, Ariel Jakobovits <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > so this concept of compressing data, it saves bandwidth but how about client > and server side processing time. > > more server load? > faster to decompress on client than download more? > > - Original Message > From: Andrew Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: CF-Talk > Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 2:58:36 PM > Subject: Re: HTTP Compression with CF7 > > You know Pete... > > If you are going to give something, some credit would have been good:-) > > http://www.andyscott.id.au/index.cfm/2006/9/12/Proof-of-Concept > > > > > On 4/26/07, Pete Ruckelshaus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > Roll your own. so this concept of compressing data, it saves bandwidth but how about client and server side processing time. more server load? faster to decompress on client than download more? - Original Message From: Andrew Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: CF-Talk Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 2:58:36 PM Subject: Re: HTTP Compression with CF7 You know Pete... Re: HTTP Compression with CF7
I have used the GZip compression in IIS 6. If you want an easy way to manage it I would suggest using ZipEnable from port80 software. It is well worth the $150. http://www.port80software.com/products/zipenable/ One thing that you need to watch out for is that the compression kills Scheduled Tasks or CFHTTP calls to your site. If you have your tasks in a specific folder then you can exclude that folder from compression using ZipEnable. Neil, yes that is correct it does. But only from Version 6 and up, just in case others are still running older IIS sites. It's worth mentioning that this will only compress resources served via CF. It won't capture anything the web server serves directly (images, CSS, JS, etc.). cheers, barneyb On 4/25/07, Pete Ruckelshaus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Roll your own. Roll your own. RE: HTTP Compression and/or Caching breaks CFChart?
I have done this on my site minus the caching. I have had no problem with serving out compressed webcontent save for ISA servers http filter stripping the gzip accept encoding header. Perhaps the problem is with the caching of the cfchart images. I believe mine is set up purely in a default way, though the queries which build the charts are largely cached. Maybe something like that could help you get the gzip encoding working. I absolutly love compression, shrinks a 100kb cfm file down to about 9kb. Much quicker serving over my slow link :-) John From: Stephen Cassady [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wed 12/15/2004 10:58 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: HTTP Compression and/or Caching breaks CFChart? I just initialized HTTP Compression and better caching on our servers and not CFChart never loads/displays. Just a space where they should be. The HTTP Compression is set to dynamic compression (so the cfm are being compressed). Any suggestions, thoughts, or options I should look at to have CFChart display and run compression? I would like/need to run compression with caching because I've already received feedback from our numerous 56k users and they are absolutely happy with change in performance, and the option to reduce bandwidth costs makes me really happy. Re: HTTP Compression and ColdFusion
Just a quick update to my findings on HTTP Compression, IIS5, and ColdFusion. I was able to get everything working successfully on CFMX but was unable to make it work correctly on CF5. Here is a link to a very good article I found concerning the subject: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20020716.asp And here is a copy of the "compressionOptions.bat" file that I used: 1) cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/GZIP/HcFileExtensions "htm" "html" "txt" "ppt" "xls" 2) cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/DEFLATE/HcFileExtensions "htm" "html" "txt" "ppt" "xls" 3) cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/GZIP/HcScriptFileExtensions "asp" "cfm" "dll" "exe" "aspx" 4) cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/DEFLATE/HcScriptFileExtensions "asp" "cfm" "dll" "exe" "aspx" 5) IISreset.exe /restart I have added line numbers to the above .BAT file to make it clearer. Simply remove them before you run the file. I just implemented this on one of our production machines this morning and am (obviously) still monitoring the situation. But so far everything is looking good. The pages seem noticably faster, especially on slow dialup connections. I really don't want to take this thread too far off topic but I felt it to be important to the ColdFusion community. I got started on this after dealing with one client who was complaining his intranet pages were taking "a long time" to load on his 56k connection. The pages are low graphics but heavy html... lots of nested tables, buttons, and text. The average page (including dynamic data) is around 30k. After setting up his server with HTTP compression these dynamic pages are loading almost twice as fast. -Novak ~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk FAQ: http://www.thenetprofits.co.uk/coldfusion/faq Get the mailserver that powers this list at http://www.coolfusion.com
Re: HTTP Compression and ColdFusion
Another way to do it is to go to the c:\inetpub\AdminScripts directory and create a .BAT file. Put the following into the .BAT file: cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/GZIP/HcScriptFileExtensions "asp" "cfm" "dll" "exe" "aspx" cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3Svc/Filters/Compression/DEFLATE/HcScriptFileExtensions "asp" "cfm" "dll" "exe" "aspx" IISreset.exe /restart Note that the BAT file contains only 3 lines... it might wrap in your mail reader. The reason I like this method is that I can modify my .BAT file at any time and add or remove extensions. Please note that this only modifies the "Application" extensions. If you want to modify the "static" page extensions the command is slightly different. -Novak - Original Message - From: "Jochem van Dieten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 4:29 AM Subject: Re: HTTP Compression and ColdFusion > Jesse Houwing wrote: > > > Do you ahve any information as to how to do this? Jochem, Actually it is version 5. I hadn't taken a really close look at it until now but just realized that it's a CF5 server with CFMX installed as well. I should have caught that earlier... Re: HTTP Compression and ColdFusion
Running my "test.cfm" normally I get the following output: - Snip - Done 10.0.0.102 - Snip - But running "test.cfm" with the "Compress Application Files" turned on I get the following output: - Snip - Content-type: text/html Page-Completion-Status: Normal Done 10.0.0.102 - Snip - Interesting huh? Once again, it's worth mentioning that this development box is "posessed" and probably not the best candidate for such a test. I'll try it on a different box tomorrow and report my findings. I was just curious to know if anyone out there has done it successfully or if this was a bug in CF/Microsoft just like the URLScan/CF issue (different thread, I won't bother with details here). -Novak - Original Message - From: "Jochem van Dieten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 12:58 AM Subject: Re: HTTP Compression and ColdFusion > [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > > Has anyone here used IIS5's built in HTTP Compression successfully > > with ColdFusion 5 or ColdFusion MX? > > I switched it on a couple of days ago for CF MX and haven't seen any > problems.
