I would think that giving out the serial number is NOT an illegal act. But,
the SN will do you absolutely no good without the piece of software to go
with it, and the copying of THAT is what is illegal.

This thread is not tech related and is basically a troll. Please end it
now. If you want to talk about Macromedia's licensing policy, please post
to CF-Partners. If you want to blow off steam or rant about Mr.Warez, then
CF-Community is for you. Thank you.

P.S. Your ColdFusion server is connected to the Internet at almost all
times. Some of the new services try to communicate with the net once a
connection exists. Do you want to bet that your serial number is being
checked or passed to MM. The use of bootleg serial numbers should be done
at your own risk.

It may not be illegal strictly but, it isn't cricket and certainly isn't

Regardless of whether anyone here would use it (I think we are all

Perhaps posting the serial number was a mistake altought looking at the

OK, let me get my final word out.

I do believe it is morally wrong to publish a serial like that. I do not

believe it to be prima facie illegal.

I have been playing devils advocate a bit, and although I believe all of

my postings can be defended I am not sure that I want to defend them. I
just want to make the point that we shouldn't try to more Catholic then
the pope.
Which parties interests are hurt? Macromedia. What does MM do when
somebody posts a serial on their forum? The serial gets deleted but the
person is not banned (extrapoliting from behaviour in the past). Should
we ban a person when MM does not do that?

thought was that he emailed the info to the wrong address. Making
honest mistakes should not result in someone being banned from the list.

Are you sure ? IANAL, but I dont remember anything in the license agrement
about not telling anyone your license key (ICBW- I'm in a different office

'Course, doing something like that would be silly, because unless its a
generated key, they'll be able to trace it to the original buyer.

I never said that. However, I *do* believe it is right to give a decent
argumentation when you suggest to ban someone. Pointing to some law
maybe (make sure it is the right jurisdiction for the person sending the
message), some disclaimer everybody has to agree upon to be able to post
here or something. What did he do wrong?

> Do you know Piracy is illegal?

If it was legal it wouldn't be piracy.

A far more interesting question is: Does publishing a serial number
constitute piracy? AFAIK not (although it is a lot of other things).
Piracy is using a non-licensed copy of software. Since Mr Warez has a
license number, I suppose he has a license. Ironically that means his
version does not constitute piracy, but others that install an
unlicensed CF with his license number do.

In many jurisdictions proving selective prosecution goes a long way in
acquiting somebody from a crime. That means that if you don't take legal
action now against me for redistributing your email, legal action
against others runs a risk of being dismissed before it gets in a court.
Just doing my bit to make information free ;)

Besides, these disclaimer statements are useless, often illogical
("please notify the system manager": I *am* the systems manager, who do
I notify?), and a clear violation of RFC 1855 which sets rules for a
signature.
