Re: Code Question

2006-11-15 Thread Wayne Putterill
Some good points there about having to adapt to any new tool, I tried
a few times to change to using CFEclipse and failed because I was
trying to make it work exactly the way I was used to working. Once I
had got it into my head that I would have to adapt slightly and adopt
the project model of working everything started to make a lot more
sense.

I think that if there was one thing you could do to make CFEclipse
easier to change to it would be an idiots guide to the CFeclipse way
of working - with lots of pictures and not too many long words :)

Good presentation at CFDevcon by the way, I was with three colleagues
that had never seen CFEclipse before and they were all raving about it
after.

Even if it got to the stage of Just talk to CFEclipse, it will

Its just the way some people are used to their tools. Personally I

The benefits of CFEclipse projects are that once you have all your
files grouped into projects you can do fast searches for a file, or
in a file (thats in a selection, in a project, or in the whole dammed
workbench, or even just in one of your selection sets!) pretty
easily... just because the gui isn't what you expected (dammit, you

Re: Code Question

2006-11-14 Thread Matt Williams
Well put Mark. I'm with you on learning new tools too. If I wasn't,
I'd still be using an Apple II+ to make new Lode Runner levels
(hopefully didn't date myself too badly there).

Personally I like the Project structure. In fact, I have my .cfm and
..cfc files set to open into Notepad if I'm just double clicking it
from Windows Explorer. This is so it will open quick and I can find
what I'm looking for easily. But that is definitely rare and I usually
am in Eclipse / CFEclipse to begin with. Searching an entire project
is flexible and fast.

And Rick, I'm definitely a keyboard shortcut guy also. The CFEclipse
toolbar is turned off. I've actually adapted some of Dreamweaver's
shortcuts to be the CFEclipse default. Learning new shortcuts is
definitely frustrating at first, but if you're committed to switching
tools, it come pretty quick.

My $.02

I rarely take my hands off the keyboard anymore either and for all of you
shortcut / snippet / macro junkies out there like me... I absolutely love
this keyboard and you probably would too.

1) 18 macro keys under 3 profiles = 64 shortcut/macros/hotkeys
2) LCD to read sender and subject of a pop3 account
3) LCD also has a stopwatch on it (2 actually) that keeps track of hours
rather well :-)

The quick keys can be set to macros (their definition of macros is simply
recorded keystrokes) or to any single keystroke, or to any file/dir/app
shortcut you want.

I don't understand why the use of keyboard shortcuts is hindering your
adoption of CFEclipse. I'm also a keyboard shortcut junkie and
CF/Eclipse offers me every bit of functionality I could ask for. And
it's just as configurable. There may some shortcuts that are not
available and/or some that are available that weren't in Homesite+,
but on the whole I've been extremely happy with those
offered/available in CF/Eclipse.

There may be other reasons for not adopting Eclipse, but if this is
the only one or even the primary one then it may be worth another
look.

Yeah, that still bothers me from time to time. It's definitely an
adjustment, but I've learned to handle it okay. And it even offers a
few advantages that are occasionally helpful.

I also don't like the way ctrl-tab works

Ctrl+H provides that option with even more capability. Search a
resource, a project or a workspace. Pretty flexible. Plus regex
search and replace. Someone mentioned that HS+ offered that, but I
had never realized it.

I'm sure it's mostly just a learning curve thing. I know I *SHOULD* be
using cfeclipse, and I'm getting closer (because I essentially *MUST*

I'm not sure it's a normative question like that. Should or shouldn't
isn't really an issue when you have options. Whatever works for you
is what you should be using. I switched primarily because I wanted to
use the same IDE in my windows, linux and mac desktop environments.
Otherwise, HS+ was meeting all of my needs.

Granted Dreamweaver outa the box is a bit of a resource hog untill you turn
off some stuff. but once ya have it under controll it does everything i

CF/Eclipse offers me every bit of functionality I could ask for. And
it's just as configurable. There may some shortcuts that are not
available and/or some that are available that weren't in Homesite+,
but on the whole I've been extremely happy with those
   offered/available in CF/Eclipse.

The keyboard shortcut issue is really just part of it. I have a problem
going between the project based structure of eclipse and the file
  based structure of homesite.

Yeah, that still bothers me from time to time. It's definitely an
adjustment, but I've learned to handle it okay. And it even offers a
few advantages that are occasionally helpful.

I also don't like the way ctrl-tab works
in cfeclipse. I find myself using Homesite's extended find and extended
find/replace feature *ALL* the time. I'm not even sure cfeclipse has
  that kind of functionality.

Ctrl+H provides that option with even more capability. Search a
resource, a project or a workspace. Pretty flexible. Plus regex
search and replace. Someone mentioned that HS+ offered that, but I
 had never realized it.

I'm sure it's mostly just a learning curve thing. I know I *SHOULD* be
using cfeclipse, and I'm getting closer (because I essentially *MUST*
  use eclipse for flex apps)..

It's wired (USB only) but w worth the price. It saves me a ton of
time everyday.

no I don’t work for or have stock in Logitech.

Here is a few snippets for forta's website. They deem to work pretty good.

Here's another tip to improve Dreamweaver load time. In Preferences select
the File Types / Editors screen and add .cfm and .cfc to the Open in Code
View list. You'll lose support for design view and the Insert bar, but the
load speed will be much faster. (Applies to: Dreamweaver MX)

When the Dreamweaver Application window is open (particularly with the
Databases or Component tab selected) Dreamweaver will keep refreshing window
content. This can have a real impact on Dreamweaver performance, and so it
is best to keep the Application window closed when it is not being used.
(Applies to: Dreamweaver MX)

Suffering from a sluggish Dreamweaver? One quick tip is to turn off Refresh
Local File List Automatically and Refresh Remote File List Automatically
in the Site settings. (Applies to: Dreamweaver MX)

Today is my first day with CF.

I am trying to create a login procedure. I have MySQL setup and
 created a DSN.

 I am trying to run:

 cfquery name=ckCreds datasource=#MyDSN#
 SELECT LocationName FROM
 WHERE LocationID = '#form.user#'
AND LocationPassword = '#form.password#';
 /cfquery

 cfif ckCreds.recordCount EQ 1
 !--- successful login --

 CFAPPLICATION NAME=mysession SESSIONMANAGEMENT=Yes
 SESSIONTIMEOUT=#CreateTimeSpan(0, 0, 20, 0)#
 ]
 cflocation url=main.cfm /
 cfelse
 !--- login failed --
 cflocation url=index.cfm /
 /cfif

and I am getting an error that states:

Invalid token '' found on line 18 at column 8.

But that specific place is a blank space.

I dont see what I am doing wrong so far.

I just bought Ben Forta's book yesterday, good read so far.

PRoblem #1: cfapplication ONLY goes in a file called Application.cfm

The application.cfm is processed on EVERY coldfusion request.

Problem #2: !--- successful login --

You've combined a CFML open comment (!---) with a standard HTML

Problem #3 - ALWAYS USE CFQUERYPARAM in your queries.

so replace your variable parameters in the query with cfqueryparam tags,
like this:

cfquery name=ckCreds datasource=#MyDSN#
SELECT LocationName FROM
 WHERE LocationID = Cfqueryparam cfsqltype=cf_sql_varchar
value=#form.user#
AND LocationPassword = cfqueryparam cfsqltype=cf_sql_varchar
value=#form.password#
/cfquery

Just get used to using cfqueryparam now and it will save you a LOT of
grief later. It improves performance and enhances security - eliminates
the possibility of SQL injection.

Re: Code Question

2006-11-10 Thread Doug Brown
Well, that is not exactly true. You can call cfapplication in any of your
templates, but only once per site. You can put it in a file for processing
your global site vars and call that file from within your index.cfm file if
you wish. CF simply traverses up your sites files until it reached your root
directory and if does not find your cfapplication it just does not use it.

IE:

site_globals.cfm

cfapplication name=myApp
sessionmanagement=yes
clientmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#createTimeSpan(0,0,20,0)#

cfset application.dsn = myDsn
cfset application.adminEmail = myAdminEmail

index.cfm

cfinclude template=site_globals.cfm
more code

Thanks,
I have corrected everything and looked up cdqueryparam tag in Forta's

Now it tells me that my datasource is undefined: Variable MYDSN is
undefined.

Is there anything special that one has to do? I created the DSN in
the admin setup and it is found there.

Can I simply not say MyDSN in the cfquery statement.

Jason

You can add this to your application.cfm

cfset application.myDsn = YourDsnName
and then in your queries you can use the application variable
#application.myDsn#

If your DNS is named MyDSN, then remove the # signs from around the
name of the DSN.. it's not a variable.

In my code, I often do something in the application.cfm like this:

cfset application.primarydb = MyDSN

Then in my queries

cfquery name=ckCreds datasource=#application.primarydb#

That way, if you change your datasource name, you only have to change it
in your application.cfm

Re: Code Question

2006-11-10 Thread Mike Kear
Jason, I reckon you've made a pretty good start for your first day.
These things you're finding now will become second nature pretty
quickly.

I'm not sure if you have background in other programming, so perhaps i
can flesh out a little of what the others have said about the
Application.cfm file ..

You should have one in every site, even if it doesn't contain
anything, because ColdFusion will go searching for one every time you
call a page, and if it doesnt find one it will search and search
before giving up. If you dont want to use one, give it an empty one
to find at the top level of your site. It'll save a lot of processing
time on every page request.

However you should have an Applicatoin.cfm file because it's very useful.

In your Application.cfm file, you should have the Application tag and
nowhere else, that way you know you only have one cfapplication
anywhere in the site. If you have several of them, you will get
confusion later on if something goes wrong, because you can not be
sure which application is current at the moment of the error.

Also in your Applicatoin.cfm file you can put all the environment
variables. That way when you deploy your site to the production
server, all the things you have to change for that server are in the
one place.

For example, you have a DSN now called MyDSN. But when you put your
site up to the host, it's likely you will not be able to use that
name. You might have to use a name more like DSN765DLIJ or who
knows what else. All you have to do is have an Application.cfm
file you up load to the server with that DSN name in it, rather than
have to go right through your site changing every query, then when you
want to do work locally again changing them all back.

You can do the same with email addresses, colour settings, file paths,
mapping names, all kinds of things.Just have something like this
in your Application.cfm file:

cfset application.dsn = MyDSN /

then in every query throughout the site,  put the dsn in like this;

cfquery name=getnames datasource=#application.dsn#

Oh and Rick Root - It's more advanced than Jason is at the moment, and
I dont want to confuse him with unnecessary complications, but there
is at least one case where you can't use cfqueryparam . if
you're going to use cachedwithin. cfquery throws an error if you try
to use them both in the same query.

Jason, dont worry about that yet. Cachedwithin is a way to cache
queries so they dont require a trip to the database every time. For
your purposes at this stage, get in the habit of using cfqueryparam
on all your queries and you'll be ok.
