Re: Hosting.com, Your Experiences

2011-03-07 Thread Russ Michaels

if support and service is important to you then stick with a smaller company
who charges more.
Everyone knows the BIG hosting companies don't have the same level of
support/service as they have 100 x more customers to support, so it is more
customer per support person and the support staff are usually not that
technical as they can;t afford to hire only gurus who are developers and
tech support experts.
Just an unfortunate fact of life i'm afraid, find a company that specialise
in ColdFusion rather than a generic host.
HostMySite used to get rave reviews, hosting.com don't.
If your in the USA then I suggest http://www.edgewebhosting.net/ or if your
in uk/europe try www.cfmxhosting.co.uk

If you are looking for "non scam" host reviews try these 2 sites.

When it was still HostMySite my experiences were very positive. I could
call them with a problem at 2:30am, somebody would actually answer the
phone, and that very person would usually fix my problem while I was
online. Email support requests were usually answered/handled within an hour.

Now - not so much. I've had issues that went close to 24 hours before I
even got a response on email. Phone support/live chat is still OK, but
NOT what it was before the merger.

I've not moved any clients yet because I'd have to be sure I wasn't
making a lateral move - but it's not as good as it was...

2011-03-06 Thread Matthew Williams

I've had clients with HMS (hosting.com bought them?) for roughly 3
years. Their "dedicated" solutions seem to be OK, but their shared
hosting is... well, the norm for CF shared hosting I suppose :P. It's
entirely overcrowded. I've got a nagios alert set up for the only
shared hosting account we still have with them, and some months are
better than others. There is not a week that goes by that I don't get
paged at least once for page timing out, and sometimes it's also
pitching out 500 server error messages.

If you're not afraid of Linux, and can migrate from ACF to Railo,
Linode.com has some truly smashing deals. I think in the 2 years I've
been with them there has been one outage (DNS went out for a few hours)
at the datacenter that hosts two of my VMs.

Re: Hosting.com, Your Experiences

2011-03-06 Thread Dan Crouch

We have had some dedicated servers with Hosting.com for a few years and have
noticed some issues over the last year or so, really since the merge with
hostmysite.com and hosting.com.

We used to get quarterly calls from senior management to discuss our account
and problems we were having. Those went away as did a lot of the
accountability. We have had a hard time getting information on our account
related to services and upgrades. The product offerings have changed so much
that I don't think even they can keep up with it. While the technical support
is still easy to reach and I think in general the techs do a great job, when
the issues are bigger and need to be escalated, thats when the trouble arises.
Now I see a VM shutting down on its own or crashing as a big issue. Sometimes
convincing others of that seems to be more work than it should be. I like to
know the cause of an issue and not just hear something like, seems fine now let
us know if it happens again. My clients don't like to hear that any more than I
do. Perhaps management decided to focus on products more than operations and
support?? I don't know, but in my opinion I would suggest looking elsewhere as
well. I think there are other companies offering well architected solutions at
more competetive prices.

Re: Hosting.com, Your Experiences

2011-03-05 Thread Drew Nathanson

Peter,

I have had several of my clients at Hosting and I would recommend that you find
someone else to your hosting. I have moved most over to EdgeWeb as they seem to
have a better handle on how customer support is suppose to work. Hosting's
answer to me was always the same thing .. "You need to move to a VPS or you
need to add more memory to your existing VPS or you should be on a dedicated
server". They don't really solve any problems but there always lots of excuses.
I found their service to be going down hill for quite some time. EdgeWeb is
more $$ but I have to say that they have NEVER failed to help get a problem
resolved.

Again, this is just my opinion.
