Does SmarterStats make it easy to track pages based on URL variables? Like many sites, our whole site is based on: index.cfm?id=1234 article.cfm?id=5678 conference.cfm?id=91011 And, to further complicate, the same item can be called from different directories: /about/article.cfm?id=5678 /resources/article.cfm?id=5678 Cameron Thanks to all that have helped. Personally, I have a little script I use to create my own IIS logs where I replace the appropriate URL variables with an associated page name. It means you have one set of logs which shows how many people have been looking at different images and with a lot of hits to index.cfm but another which is great for viewing page views, paths through the site, etc. I find that more reliable and less cumbersome than trying to persuade any of the stats packages to display just what I want based upon a number of different URL variables. Also, unless you need the built in web server to access the smarterstats webservices for some reason, you don't need to run the smarterstats webserver. Set the directory permissions and run it under IIS. Well taxing the server depends on how much you have running automatically and other Factors. But yes, I have it running on the same box. Then again, think about how you will use it and how often and such to make the Determination if it needs to reside on it's own box. Hi Che, I've just installed Smarterstats on IE 6. Took 10 mins to install, and it appears the trial version will run one site for free. It runs off port so you can give customer you host www.theirdomaim.com: and a login to see their stats. Maintenance, from what I can see, is zero. The stats are good and very adaptable. I've used Weblog Expert, which I'd say is better for Apache, and I looked at AWstats which is a pain to set up (loads of command line, just what you don't want). It runs two processes taking up about 75mb ram. Ok, may be I'm jumping the gun but Port is such a notorious port. I wouldn't want to give that to my customers if I were you. Many firewalls and companies block that port as well. Well, most companies block all inbound traffic, then allow exceptions as needed. As far as I can tell, there's been one well-known trojan that listens on this port, but the port isn't the installation vector for the trojan anyway - it's how the attacker controls the trojan once it's installed. I've never heard of any network administrators blocking TCP/ specifically as a result. I'd like some recommendations on web log analyzer software. I'm a little late on the discussion, so apologies if someone has already mentioned this. I personally prefer SmarterStats. It has a clean interface, scales well, and supports auto-login from client site admin consoles and such. It's easy to create sites, and then let the user see whatever reports they want. It will even remove the log files after a specified period of time to keep your drive from filling up.
