Re: Updating to Eclipse 3.3...

2007-11-28 Thread Brian Kotek
This is why I maintain a separate "eclipse-extensions" folder and install
all my plugins there. If you have to install a fresh copy of Eclipse, all
you need to do is point that new install at the extensions folder (in Manage
Configuration). From there you can pull down updates to the plugins as
needed in case a plugin doesn't work with the new version, or else disable
that plugin until a new version of it becomes available. Finally, import the
existing projects and you should be good to go.

To copy existing projects along with local history, copy the folder
.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.resources from your workspace.

You can also copy the snippets folder. The default location is
.metadata\.plugins\org.cfeclipse.cfml\snippets, or you can check CFEclipse
preferences if they're in another location.

Just to further elaborate. The last time I tried to migrate my installation
to a new build of Eclipse (I think it was from 3.1 (or maybe 3.0) to 3.2) I
spent over 2 hours trying to get things working without errors. I finally
gave up and just did a fresh install. It only took me about 40 minutes to
get a fresh new install with all new plug-ins configured.

Maybe a fresh install isn't going to be required, but you do get the benefit
of purging all the old obsolete plug-ins and old versions from Eclipse.
You'll probably notice that Eclipse boots a lot faster too.

Yea, Dan beat me to it, but that is what I meant in my post.

I've never had luck, like others who have responded, with exporting settings
or plugins. easier to just install a clean new install in another folder.

I *believe* that it's on the roadmap somewhere to support upgrading Eclipse
itself, not just plugins, via the current update mechanism.

I'd recommend just extracting Eclipse v3.3 into a new folder and then
re-installing the plug-ins (as I stated in another thread.)

I think in the long run it'll make life for you smoother. Re-installing the
plug-ins shouldn't take long.

What settings are you talking about?

Is there a single file, or a folder?

Do I have to reinstall all my plugins as well?

No need to uninstall at alljust install 3.3 to a new folder and copy
your setting over. That way you have the best of both worlds - both
installs are there for you if you need one or the other.

Yeah... "Export Settings" does indeed export settings. A few of them.
Maybe. ;^)

And so many plugins maintain their own settings and configuration

My personal experience is it's just easier to rebuild. I've tried the export
settings, but it's caused me problems in the past.

I think the problem stems from the fact that so many plug-ins are completely
re-written for different versions of Eclipse.

The good news is you should be able to go to "File > Import > Existing
Projects into Workspace" and it should import your project into your new
build (although things like the local history won't be imported.)

>From there it's just a matter of installing the plug-ins you want. Maybe
it's because I only use a handful of plug-ins (CFEclipse, Aptana, FileSync,
Flex and the various Adobe Eclipse plug-ins,) but it usually only takes me
30 minutes or so to get all my plug-ins restored.

Also, I definitely think v3.3 is worth upgrading to. Performance for me has
been much, much better.
