RE: Which version of MDAC is best with Cold Fusion 4.5.1

2001-03-01 Thread mjohnson

I have done this and it seems to work well however the procedure is rather
cryptic. The documentation that comes with comcheck explains how to do
this. Also be sure that you have the latest version of comcheck. We had an
older version installed on one machine and it did not have a listing of the
most recent files for the mdac we were attempting to check on. Kept telling
us we had version 2.1 when we really had 2.5sp1. Good Luck.

Here is where all of the various versions of MDAC are
 http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm

The file name is MDAC_TYP.EXE (7.8megs) which sort self
installs when run -- don't know about how well it works going
 backwards one version.

Also, I don't know if there is a way to uninstall the version
you now have before you install the older version.

I don't think it's a good idea to simply install an older MDAC over a newer
one. The Component Checker tool also available from the above URL allows you
to uninstall MDAC, although I haven't tried it myself.

Always get the latest mdac which is at version 2.6 right now. Just go to
microsoft.com, select download, select keyword and w2k and type in "mdac"
and you see the link for it. It's about a 5mb download.

If it's working, don't change anything.

I have ColdFusion and the latest version of MDAC (I'm pretty sure 2.5)
running on my machines here just fine. Of course with only one user (me)

RE: Which version of MDAC is best with Cold Fusion 4.5.1

2001-02-28 Thread Arden Weiss

Thanks for the very helpful and almost immediate feedback -- you guys are
great...

Seems concensus is that I should be running MDAC 2.5 with my present CF
4.5.1 and VFP/Access database environment.

Conversly with SQL Server 2000 database backend, I should go to MDAC 2.6
and the latest patches for CF.

Regarding Licensing of SQL Server 2000, I called Microsoft and they
indicated all I really needed was one license of SQL Server 2000 -- since
Cold Fusion is the user as far as SQL Server is concerned (not the 50 or
more users hitting Cold Fusion via the net).

Hence, at minimum, the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2000 (Part Number
228-00782) will do at a cost of $665.00 -- so they said.

The Standard Edition of SQL Server also comes with the Personal Edition of
SQL Server 2000 -- which may be the same version that ships with Visual
Studio (hence free - sorta) and can be managed via Access 2000. Not sure
on this last issue -- especially the how to part. Guess this means you can
install the Standard Edition on your web server that folks in the
hinterland access via your Cold Fusion app and also install the Personal
Edition on your development box -- also for a cost of just $665.

Did this doggie get it right???

MDAC 2.6, which is also installed with Win2k SP1 reintroduced a previous bug
that had been patched in earlier MDAC's. It basically hoses Access
(specifically pass-thru queries) and some ADO stuff if I remember
correctly. The newest patch for CF fixes these problems, so it is safe to
upgrade the Win2k SP1 or manually put MDAC 2.6 on the system. I've done it.
