Steve asked for date suggestions and no one replied, including me :)

It's the silly season. As organiser I think Steve should nominate a a
date. I'll try to make it. Or we could always try for early in the new
year.

RE: [cfaussie] Killing Slow Threads in cf9

2009-12-09 Thread Scott Thornton
thanks for your reply charlie.

>>> "charlie arehart"  10/12/2009 10:58 am >>>
Scott, as far as I can tell, nothing has changed in the CF Enterprise Server
Monitor from 8 to 9. Both it, and FusionReactor, and SeeFusion can all
attempt to kill requests.

Just beware: such an attempt is only that, an "attempt". There's no
guarantee it can be interrupted. If a CF request is in what's called a
native thread (that is, talking to something outside of CF, such as hung
talking to a database, doing a cfhttp, or invoking a web service, etc.) then
none of the tools can interrupt the request.

Yes, that does mean that CF requests can hang for a very long time, indeed
indefinitely in some cases and that you can't really do anything about it.
And no, not even the CF admin timeout setting can change this. It's subject
to the same limitation. It is worth noting that putting a TIMEOUT on CFHTTTP
or CFINVOKE is a good ideas, as sometimes it can allow CF to interrupt
those. We had a discussion of that here last year, if I recall. There's also
a TIMEOUT on CFQUERY too, but it doesn't always work and depends on the
drive version, type, database, and other variables.

Finally, should anyone wonder, all this inability to timeout requests in a
native thread state is not a CF bug. It's a JVM thing. The CF "kill thread"
mechanisms above merely processes ask the JVM to terminate the thread, and
it cannot terminate threads in a "native thread" state.

RE: [cfaussie] Session timeout errors.

2009-12-09 Thread charlie arehart
Beyond the other excellent suggestions so far, a simpler thing is also to
check if somehow their sessionid is changing on each request, which would
explain why sessions created on one request for the user would not be the
same on the next request.

You can track for each request (cflog, cftrace, whatever) the user's
session.sessionid value. That's a combination of their appname_cfid_cftoken
(or appname_jsessionid if using j2ee sessions). If you/they find it's one
value on one request and another on the next (for a given user), that would
be your problem.

The cfid/cftoken pair are expected to be passed in either as a cookie or on
the query string. You could then output the cgi.http_cookie, which shows
their incoming cookies, and also the cgi.query_string. If neither of those
have the cfid/cftoken value being passed in, that would more specifically
demonstrate the problem. Somehow they're not presenting the needed cookies
(which CF will have created on a previous request).

Someone may ask why I say to output cgi.http_cookie, and not cookie.cfid an
cookie.cftoken. The issue is that CF will generate those itself if they
don't exist on input, thus possibly confusing you. Same with using
cgi.query_string instead of more simply the URL scope. You could have code
that modifies the values of that URL scope by the time you would try to dump
it. The CGI vars show what was passed to the request. (You could also dump
the cookie scope and compare it to cgi.http_cookie, and the url scope to
compare to cgi.query_string, just to make sure they are identical to each
other. If not, that could be another explanation or the problem.)

Hope that helps.

Re: [cfaussie] Session timeout errors.

2009-12-09 Thread MrBuzzy
Don't be shy he says... Ok :)

* 'use J2ee session variables' ticked or not?

* are you logging onSessionStart() and onSessionEnd() ? You need a
record or proof this is occuring and when.

* it's possible you have a bug or competing application that is
removing or overwriting the cookie value that identifies the session.
* take a look at some of the session blogs (Steven Erat and Ben Nadel
spring to mind) just to check you've got everything covered.

* change the logic of the 'check' that each page is doing. Also the
value you check for, is it created in OnSessionStart? Or some other
way?

Gotta go.

Re: [cfaussie] Re: Session timeout errors.

2009-12-09 Thread Gavin Baumanis
Hi Barry,

All the settings are correct and have been checked about twenty times. and by
three separate people.
So I am pretty sure if there was a setting that was awry - at least one of us
would have found it.

We're running on linux (Debian) with Apache Web Server - so that would also
rule out an IIS (specific) issue.
It has completely stumped... we have been trying to find the underlying cause
for pretty much the last 6 months on and off.

If we work it out - I'll let you all know - and likewise if someone has any
further suggestions - we're certainly open to any new thoughts, so please don't
be shy.

Gavin.
