[Chat] Moving and selling youth bedroom set
Hi neighbors, after 26 years in CV I am moving to a stair free location. I'm going to miss CV and my neighbors a lot. In my downsizing effort I need to sell an Ethan Allen "Custom Room Plan" maple youth bedroom set. It includes a single canopy bed (with macrame canopy, mattress and Laura Ashley bedding), desk, chair, mirror, bookcase with glass fronted hutch, light bridge for over the desk, and 3 bookcase hutches. Unfortunately there are no dressers but they readily available on eBay. Please email for prices and if you want additional information or pictures. [Chat] Fw: Old architectural elements (Update)
Hi neighbors, I remeasured the tin ceiling sections. There are 13 sections that are 24" x 48" and 4 sections that are 24" by 36." Sorry for the mistake but they were stacked in a corner and I only managed to get to all of them today. Re: [Chat] [Discussion] trash
Several years ago I had the Loyola lacrosse team living next door. There was never a problem with trash. When they had a party, they let me know ahead of time and then sent me a thank you note afterwards. We got along fine. I don't think Loyola or the coach had anything to do with it - I think someone's parent (who was probably paying the rent) gave them a lecture on how to keep your neighbors happy and friendly. Surprisingly they followed that advice for the whole year they were there. [Chat] Gift bag on my porch
Hi all, I don't know whether this will get a response but earlier this week I found a large Trader Joe grocery bag on my porch...filled with clothes for a child (and cookies). It looks like a gift. There is a note that says "To Jae (Joe?) from Luka." I don't know a Jae or a Luka so have no way to get this bag to the correct owner. I left it on the porch for a few days hoping that whomever had left it would realize their mistake and come get it. The weather may be turning bad and I am also afraid items will be stolen out of the bag if I leave it out any longer. Any suggestions. Re: [Chat] Fwd: Fwd: Another break-in
While I agree that we all need to be diligent about our own personal safety and property, I also agree with Greg about holding the police to high standards. A few months back a couple of kids broke the backdoor window of my across the alley neighbor's house. I called the police before the kids got into the houseand their next door neighbor also called when he heard the glass break. It took a LONG time for the police to come - we actually flagged down a patrolling car (which had not heard from the dispatcher that there was a problem) BEFORE the police car that was dispatched showed up. And both officers did little. I doubt they even took reports..and told us that they couldn't do anything because the call had to come from the neighbor whose house was broken into. DUH!!! Later in the afternoon an officer of a much higher rank showed up to ask us about what happened. He was pretty ticked off at how the two responding officers had acted. But I don't know what happened with that. There's no feedback. Based on this experience, I wouldn't rely on police officers to show up in time to do anything. At our recent meeting at the CVCBD all I heard was that our block is too dark, people leave their windows open, etc. All valid points, but at some point, law enforcement and the CVCBD must be held accountable as well. On another note, please do not take it as an “excuse” in terms of windows and doors being left un-lock. Many break ins listed on the past 3 months of crime alerts the suspect have gained entry to properties through open windows or unlocked doors. We simply like to remind residents to double check every window and door in their household especially before they leave or in the evenings before winding down. Unfortunately we see more and more of this as the weather gets warmer. Northern District and CVCBD do offer the opportunity for residents to engrave their personal items with an engraver for a faster return of stolen items if they have been found. As well as walk throughs to suggest additional security measures in the home. Re: [Chat] Radiators
I too love my radiators. I grew up in California and no one had radiators. When a new family moved from the east to our neighborhood, they insisted on putting in steam radiators. We thought them very eccentric but they sure loved those steam radiators. I moved to Baltimore many years ago and bought a house with steam radiators..and discovered how wonderful they are. I've lived in a lot of places and had forced air heat, in floor radiant heat, baseboard heat, and wood stove heat.all have advantages, but radiators are coolest. However, they do need adjusting to function properly. When I first bought my house I bought a book by Dan Holohan called The Lost Art of Steam Heating and besides explaining how they work and how to adjust them, it contains a wonderful history lesson on steam heating. It's an incredibly complex SYSTEM. According to the author, a properly working steam system should be perfectly quiet. - but everything from the boiler, the pipes, the vents and the radiators themselves have to be perfectly balanced for that. So find a plumber who knows these systems because the clanking (water hammer) and hissing are not normal although I find some radiator noise comforting - it's like knowing an old friend is alive and kicking. In the meantime, Eric's hints in an earlier message are excellent first steps to take. Lifting one side of the radiator solved many of my original problems. One hint from an old timer - make sure all the radiator vents are from the same manufacturer because different valves have different venting rates and you need to be able to balance them based on the distance the radiator is from the boiler. Karen Morley kdmorley at yahoo dot com From: Kathleen Wilsbach To: The Charles Village Chat List Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2012 11:24 PM Subject: Re: [Chat] Radiators I have to disagree with Eric. I love our steam heat. When we had ducts put in for the central air, we left the radiators right where they were. Although the air in our house is still somewhat dry during the winter, I'll take steam over forced air any day. SS! I do agree that it's a good idea to hire an expert to deal with problems. When we've had trouble with our radiators, we've had very good service from Saffer plumbing. Faulty valves do need to be replaced if they're not working right. Also if the valve near the floor is leaking, it might need some new lamp wick which works as a sort of gasket. Sadly we had a leaking radiator that had to be replaced. Of course, you can't buy new but Saffer tries to keep a stock of used ones on hand for just such situations. When we first bought our house, David Saffer was very helpful in explaining the ins and outs of the steam heating system and giving it an initial tuneup. I used to use Roberts Locks because everyone said they were so good. Well, they basically oversold me on locks that didn't last...and then charged me a lot of money to fix them in less than a year. Re: [Chat] recycling
I have the opposite reaction to recycling on my alley...the sanitation guys are nice, friendly and do a good job. In the early days they sometimes crushed the materials and left broken glass in piles in the alley. I mentioned it to the City person in charge and it doesn't happen anymore. True, they don't always put the containers back in exactly the same place they picked them up from..but I think the guys do a good job and the City has been responsive in fixing problems. In all honesty, if I had to spend my day lifting other people's junk and dumping it in a smelly truck, I think I'd be inclined to drop the containers as soon as I could. Tuesday March 2, 2010 13:59 PM EST A new City law requires carbon monoxide detectors in residences. Is your family protected? http://bit.ly/bJciXQ Health Department, Fire Department and Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy Announce Start of CO Detector Ordinance BALTIMORE, MD (February 23, 2010) – Beginning on March 1, Baltimore City will require carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to be installed in residential dwellings, hotels and buildings used for living or sleeping. Today, Baltimore City Health and Fire officials joined with The Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP), based at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, to warn residents of the health dangers of CO poisoning, to share prevention tips and to urge compliance with the new law. Since 2000, more than 25 people have died in Baltimore City as a result of CO poisoning. “Studies have shown that cities with CO detector ordinances have lower reported case fatality rates than in cities without ordinances. We thank the city council for passing this important ordinance requiring CO detectors installed in all city dwellings, helping us keep our families safe,” said Interim City Health Commissioner Olivia Farrow. City Councilman James Kraft (District 1) sponsored the ordinance, which requires the installation and maintenance of carbon monoxide alarms in all new and existing residential dwellings, hotels, motels, boarding or rooming houses, or other structures where people live or sleep. The law applies to dwellings that use gas- or fossil fuel-burning furnaces or appliances. Residents should take care to follow manufacturer specifications when installing a new alarm to ensure effective protection. “I cannot emphasize enough how prevention is essential. All poisonings from CO are easily preventable with CO detectors, and this ordinance is therefore designed to save lives,” the councilman said. The ordinance follows the February 13th sickening of six passengers on a cruise ship docked in Baltimore . Because CO is odorless and colorless, safeguards such as home CO detectors are essential in detecting leaks before they cause symptoms. Mild CO poisoning can cause nausea, headaches or shortness of breath; prolonged exposure to CO can cause dizziness, confusion, severe headaches, severe nausea, faintness, and death if treatment is not sought. Malfunctioning furnaces and other appliances that burn fuels are common culprits of home CO leaks. From 2008 through 2009, the Baltimore City Fire Department responded to more than 3,600 CO poisoning calls. “Like many injuries that occur in the home, CO poisoning can be prevented. By installing a CO alarm in the hallway near every separate sleeping area of their home, people can keep themselves safe,” said Eileen McDonald, director of The Johns Hopkins Children’s Safety Centers, which are run by CIRP. To speed the conversion of city homes into safer residences, Kidde, a leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products, has donated 250 free CO alarms that will be distributed to City residents who demonstrate financial need. The devices will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Johns Hopkins Children’s Safety, located inside Children’s Admitting at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. The center is open Monday – Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the phone number is (410) 614-5587. # # # For full details, go to http://local.nixle.com/alert/1356418/ Contact Information: Brian Schleter Administration 443-984-2623 brian.schle...@baltimorecity.gov To manage your text and email settings, please log into your account at http://local.nixle.com/accounts/login/. powered by nixle. Re: [Chat] Christmas Tree Pickup?
Sharon, to let you know about trash pickup after the snowstorm. My alley is the 2700 block of Hunter (between Calvert and Guilford). My alley neighbors worked hard, had fun, and our alley was cleared the day after the storm. I knew that we had been directed to put our trash out front (Calvert for me) and so I did that on Tuesday. By 4:30 they had not picked it up so I took it back in. However, they did pick up trash in the alley that morning. Then on Thursday, I put out my recycling in the alley - since it was clear - and it was not picked up. I later realized it was probably a furlough day so didn't worry. However, the next Thursday I talked to the city crew picking up the recycling, and they told me they had worked on the previous Thursday but they picked up in front, not in the alley. So there were a lot of mixed signals. I would certainly prefer they pick up in the alley, even after a storm, because we keep our alley a lot clearer than Calvert St. There were a lot of Christmas trees in the alley todaythey did not get picked up on Tuesday. Dear Neighbors: By now some of you may have noticed that DPW did not keep its promise (See their Press Release below from 12/18) and did not pick up the Christmas trees with the regular trash pickup on Tuesday. Matt Bradby at CVCBD (Benefits District) reports that he spoke to Valentina Ukwoma, Bureau Head for Solid Waste, who told him to tell residents to call 311 and get a complaint number if their tree was not picked up as promised on their regular trash day. That way there is a public record of the problem which will result in better accountability. This will result in the trees being picked up in the next day or two. If not, call back using the complaint number you received the first time. I have sent an email to David Scott, Director of DPW, asking him to address the problem and explain why it happened. I will share his response when I receive it. I will be asking the CVCBD to assist with this problem. For those of you with Wednesday regular trash days: Did the sanitation workers pick up the Christmas trees? I am also concerned about how the DPW handled trash pickup after the snow storm when most of the alleys were actually passable and they did not even check before leaving the trash behind. Trash was left in alleys that were actually plowed and some trash was picked up in alleys that were not plowed. No rhyme or reason to what happened. I do not understand why they do not put a shovel on the front of a pickup truck and do the alleys. But I want to get this tree problem resolved before going into that issue. Again, I will be looking for CVCBD's help in resolving this issue. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Sharon L. For residents who cannot bring their trees for mulching, the Bureau of Solid Waste will offer curbside tree collection from Tuesday, January 5, 2010 through Friday, January 29, 2010. Re: [Chat] Alley cats
While I appreciate Lauren's concerns regarding alley cats, I have to strongly disagree with her proposal. Scientists estimate that free-roaming cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians each year. Cat predation is an added stress to wildlife populations already struggling to survive habitat loss, pollution, pesticides, and other human impacts. I believe cats should be kept indoors - and feral and free-roaming cats should be trapped and taken to shelters. Domestic cats are not a part of our natural eco-system - and are considered primarily responsible for the extinction of 33 bird species since the 1600s. So please keep your cats inside...and let's find a better way to deal with feral/alley cats. I love cats..and have them - inside. http://www.abcbirds.org/abcprograms/policy/cats/index.html As for Trap-Neuter-Release programs.see attached information from abcbirds materials. There have been lots of interesting discussions about cats recently since the dog attacked our neighbor Greg and his dog, Herschel. I am glad that both of them are on the mend and have gotten some support from the city because of the community's efforts. Now on to other CV animalsCATS. Our neighbor went to a workshop offered by Alley Cat Allies and this is the info she reported: "Basically the way ACA works is that if you have a stray cat or a colony, you schedule spay/neuter appointments with a vet ahead of time (2 weeks-a month ahead to get into the $20 clinics). Then, starting several days before the appointment, you start putting out some food for the cat/cats you are trying to catch, so they'll get used to you and come around your yard/porch/wherever on a regular basis. You need to get a trap ahead of time (big wire cage with a trip plate), which you either buy at Ace or somewhere like that, or you can try to borrow one, which you may be able to get by getting in touch with someone from Alley Cat Allies. I think they're a bit big and expensive to buy if you're not planning on using it a lot. So, you put out the normal plate of food inside the trap the day before you have the vet appt. and hopefully, the cat will come by, go for the food, and the trap door will snap shut behind them. They'll probably freak out, so the woman who was giving the talk said to bring the trap inside your house (a bathroom may be a good idea), put newspaper under the trap, and cover it with a towel (this calms the cat down I believe). The next day, you take them to the vet for the appointment, and then, the important thing is to keep them inside somewhere warm the night afterward because anesthesia keeps them from properly regulating their body temps. The next day, take 'em outside, open the hatch, and you're all done." I just looked on the Alley Cat Allies website, I found this helpful info: "What is Targeted Trapping?Targeted trapping is a method of trapping, spaying or neutering, and vaccinating an entire colony at a time before moving on to the next surrounding colonies in a specific geographic location. Newcomers entering completed colonies are immediately trapped, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. Conducting Trap-Neuter-Return indiscriminately by spaying and neutering only a few cats in a colony and then moving on to another colony has limited effects. It certainly helps those individual cats, but does not address the overall goal of helping all of the identified members of a colony and preventing new litters of kittens in that colony. Cats who are not trapped and vetted will continue to breed and exhibit behaviors such as yowling, spraying, and roaming

Over here on Calvert St. we have survived the big dig (so far)...the worst part is when they are driving the I beams down. However, although there was a lot of noise, there was little in the way of shaking and damage to the house that you describe...at least to mine. I work at home one day a week and was here when it happened - and aside from the noise, it didn't bother me. I'm only a few houses up Calvert from 27th so I wonder if the substrata is different where you are to cause such a disturbance. I have friends who use Dish Network and they are happy as well but I cannot comment on their customer service. On the whole the price for the service comes to about the same as cable. It is also possible to get satellite The support people from DirecTV and friendly and helpful. There are seldom problems but when there are, the support people are right there to help (and not make me feel stupid for doing something silly). There are 3 things you need to know: 1. when there is a bad thunderstorm overhead the connection to the satellite can be broken and you'll loose service for a few minutes until the storm passes. It's something you get used to but it can be annoying when it happens at a critical point of a movie or show. 2. the weather channel does not tailor it's local update to Baltimore.you'll only see national updates for all major cities across the country (including Baltimore). 3. You have to pay extra for local broadcast channels..for years I just used my antenna for those since it's pretty easy to switch back and forth. However, when I got TIVO (absolutely the best electronic device I've ever owned), I found I could not program shows unless they came through the DirecTV line..now I have a TIVO from DirecTV so that may be part of it.but it's something to think about if you go the DVR route. I still use the antenna for DC channels which I sometimes like to watch since I work in DC. You can also get satellite service that includes internet service. I think it's quite expensive as compared to a DSL line. If you want more information, please email me & I can give you a demo. Karen Emil Volcheck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Kathleen and I are thinking about switching to satellite TV.Has anybody done this, and do you know a good installer?Paul Moscatt (of the Little Shop of Hardware) tells me it'sgreat and better than Comcast. We can't wait for Verizon FiOS (if they ever bring it here)!(FiOS is the new fiber optic system for voice/phone/TV.)Thanks,--Emil-- Emil Volcheck[EMAIL PROTECTED]http://acm.org/~volcheck___Chat mailing listChat@charlesvillage.infohttp://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info Yahoo! Re: [Chat] Can anyone recommend a good nursery?
Market Day at Cylburn Arboretum is coming up soon - it's probably the second or third weekend in May. You can call the number listed on their web site: http://www.cylburnassociation.org/index.htm Each spring the native plant societies and other garden groups get together and sell wonderful native and rare plants. It's very popular, so go early (8 am) and take a wagon or something to carry your treasures. The Baltimore Bird Club's museum of the birds of MD has been moved to the carriage house and should be openit's very interesting if you are at all interested in birds. Emil, at this point in time Angie's List is free in Baltimore. It may be a marketing strategy since they are just entering this market. But there is no $51.00 fee. For the record, Thompson's was great but not that cheap, about a grand to move all my junk. The crew was incredibly courteous, very careful, and had a truck that was cleaner than my house. I got called "ma'am" so often I thought I was working with military again. I will definitely use them again, even if they cost more. I am too old to cart all that junk around myself. Jenny, I recently had new locks put on all my doors. It's expensive so it would be great if you could do it yourself. (There's a report on locks in the new Consumer's Reports) I used Robert's Key Service and they did a good job. They were recommended by a fellow who was a real expert in old house locks but has now gone into the security business. I don't know if they do repairs to old wood..but they did have to work around a lot of old "cuts" in my doors. They also do wonders with old interior locks.
