What is the point of cleaning out the tarnish in the oil you are about to
change anyway? I don't understand what you mean about "put the clearances."
What does this mean? What clearances? So how does this help my sticky
lifter issue, or does is this just an additional way to clean out the engine
before oil changes?

Thanks,

[Chevelle-List] carb swap

2002-02-23 Thread Robert Belz

I'm going to switch from my Q-jet to a Holley carb. I need some help with
the throttle cable hardware. I want to use the stock cable, it is held in
place by the bracket that's bolted to the back carb bolts. The cable is
held in the bracket by a big round grommet that goes in a slot in the
bracket. Is there an aftermarket bracket that will fit the stock cable yet
bolt up to the Holley bolt pattern ? Also I'm open to ideas as to how to
run the fuel line. I'm going to use the stock mechanical pump and would
like to run steel line up to the carb then split the line to the float
bowls. I wonder if the reproduction fuel lines with the dual feed Y block
would fit a 454. Can you guys running dual feed set ups give me some input.
If you have links to pics of your engine compartments please let me know. I
want a clean installation that could pass for stock.
Thanks
Bob

change it not worry about the oil change. the only thing i have ever heard
that has anything to do with oil and auto transmission fluid is that before
u change ur oil put a quart of atf in your oil and let it run for like 5
min. This will clean out the tarnish. It did alot of good to my engine.
The oil comes out lookin almost brand new. If you got alot of miles though
and never have done it, it may put the clearances and u might start getting
engine noise but 10W-40 will take away those clearances. It took a few oil
changes before I could notice the change in the oil so don't expect it right

By the looks of the great list
that you sent me it looks as though I have the '68 bucket seats.  I thought
I did, cause a guy want to trade me for a set of '69 buckets.  I was just
wondering if he was telling me the truth or if he was trying to pull the wool
over my eyes (so to speak).  I like the '68 buckets and don't know if I
want to trade.  I am not looking to make the car original or
anything.  I just like the look.  Now as far as the interior kit...can
I get a '68 kit?  Is the carpet mold for the '68 and '69 the same or do I
need to buy separate pieces?

Did the 69 Chevelle SS come with
front bucket seats that did not have a headrest?  Mine don't have it and I
don't know if mayby if I might have 69 front buckets.  The seats that I
have are a lower back seat and the button to fold the seat is a rectanglar
button, not square.  My other question is that if the seats are 68
and I go to redo the interior, can I buy a 68 Chevelle interior kit
(carpet...is it the same as the 69, padding, front seat and rear seat covers) or
do I need to by separate pieces to do the interior?

Thanks Again,

I'm still undecided on the crate BBC/SBC issue but did decide today to go ahead with
the rear end upgrade from 2.73 open to 3.42 with Auburn Pro, c-clip eliminators, new
bearings and a Moser Engineering aluminum rear end cover etc while the car is still in
the resto shop. Will have the TH350 beefed up or swapped for a 400 when the engine is
changed. Plan on putting 30-60 days on the ole reliable 307 to make sure the new
brakes and new suspension are solid and get everything necessary for the engine swap
and vintage or southern air project.

What is the date of the show?  It says pre-reg by May 3rd but no date of show.  Also, let me know when it gets closer if you are definatley taking your 72.  If you do, I'll drive my 70 up from here if I have nothing scheduled that day.  Its like a 65 mile run for me.  No problem considering I drive it to Englishtown (80 miles 1 way), and down to Maryland (150 miles 1 way).

No it's not unrepairable, but I was told by both places that here's frame

A car was usually considered a total by an insurance company if the cost of
repairs exceeds 80% of a vehicles value. The percentage may have changed since I
worked in a body shop, but the concept is the same. This doesn't mean a car is
unrepairable, just not worth repairing in the eyes of the insurance industry.
However, if your car is determined to be unrepairable, or unsafe even after being
repaired, therefore uninsurable, they will insist on totalling it. I don't think
this would be the case with your car from the pictures I saw of it.

If the book value is less than the cost of the repair the insurance company will
settle for 80% of that and you keep your title. Find out "book value", and make a
list of reasons why your car is worth what you say it is. Understand that an
insurance adjuster's job is to pay out the least amount for his company and he
will have his reasons why it isn't worth what you say it is. The value of your car
may go up if you tell him, "OK, if you don't want to pay what I think the car is
worth, find me another one in the same condition mine was before it got hit."
Insurance companies are bound to provide what's called "Like, kind & quality" so
they are bound to provide you with a reasonable settlement whether its another
vehicle or monetary. They would rather provide a monetary settlement than go car
shopping.

[Chevelle-List] Sail Panel Follow-up

2002-02-23 Thread Craig & Cerena Robertson

 After again looking at my
sail panel's it seem that they are not warped.  It appears that the
headliner material is to be tucked underneath some type of trim that should
surround the rear window.  Is there any molding that does go around the
rear window of a 69.  My car, as well as others, have and water leakage
around the rear window.  I just looks like after repairing the problem they
did not put some type of trim back around the inside of the window.  Can
anyone help?

It depends on where the pad is coming from. I am putting one in my own El
Camino, and I would not call it "a solid lump of badly trimmed badly
designed rubber". It is correctly (allegedly) Madrid grained vinyl wrapped
over foam, with a metal backing just like the original. Nothing about it is
rubber nor badly designed or trimmed. The only reason I said "allegedly" is
because my El Camino is 300 miles away and I am not looking at the grain
side-by-side. However, it's a very nice looking dash pad. Where did you see
the one you described? Where did it come from? How long ago?

Anyway, some of this is a matter of individual taste, and there may be
differences depending on the manufacturer and when it was made. One bad dash
pad doesn't mean they are all bad. Believe me, if it looked like what you
described, I wouldn't be putting it on my car.

Did all the tests you mentioned and discovered that instead of a plastic
connector that houses the two wires that plug into the back of the
alternator, the connector islong gone and just the two wires are there and
slip on individually. One of these wires was not connected. The minute I
connected this wire, voltage (running) went from 12.20 to 13.9 to 14.9. I
also pulled off the positive battery lead and car stayed running and turned
all accessories and still kept running. The dome light was flickering in
rhythm to the movements of the wipers. Something is fried on the wipers
too, on the low speed they crawl across the windshield very slow and on
high speed they come up the windshield a couple inches and just sit there.
Also the washer squirters are missing!*Jeff adds them to "the list" * :)

RE: [Chevelle-List] Catalog descriptions

2002-02-23 Thread Kevin M. Bowman

That is hilarious!  Sad part is, we have called the local
parts store for similar parts when a new, non-auto type person is working.  Listening to them yell at the computer
and ask co-workers for advice is great.

I guess the 26” exhaust tip
is next…  Has anyone seen the ‘exhaust
tip neon’ kit that is currently selling?
Makes the end of the tip glow (red, green, etc).  This goes along with the glowing rotors
neon kit that is out there.

Hey, I just redid the site
(most of it) again.  The first pic
of my Chevelle is hidden on there.
It is on the members page, under all of the links.  You will notice there is a hidden
link.  Easy way to find it is to
highlight the text..  it magically
appears…

Give it a few years and a
few thousand dollars, and it will be nice.

Later All!

Kevin

It depends on what you call "a little more expensive". Just Dashes gets $400
to recover a dash pad. A repro is about $150. I paid $75 each to have the
center emblems for my Olds wheelcovers re-chromed (not available in repro),
and in the long run it was a mistake. They still have to be painted (time is
money too), and I have since found 3 NOS covers for about $50 each, and one
NOS emblem for $25. Re-chroming is not cheap, especially here in the
northeast where the hazmat laws are very strict.

[Chevelle-List] Catalog descriptions

2002-02-23 Thread Herbert Lumpp

Yesterday I received a mini catalog from Summit.  It's
for trucks and since we have two 4x4's, I naturally had to look through
it...

On page 31 there are some bucket seats.  One of the
descriptions says:

"Reinforced bolsters patterned after professional drag racing
seats for the ultimate control during hard cornering."

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't recall ever hearing
a professional DRAG racer talk about "hard cornering" when referring to his drag
car.  Apparently the people writing the descriptions
don't know much about racing.

Anyway, I just thought it was funny...

Don,

Considering my Elky has barely 50 miles on it and no posi, the Nova should
have dusted me. Even if I never win a race, at least I'm having fun, my car
looks good, it goes, it turns, it stops, and when I get on the highway I can
shift into 6th gear and cruise along with the economy cars! :)

Yes I am proud of my Elky, and thanks for the compliments.

  Amen to the dash
part. I can’t find the plastic either, and would love to find an aluminum
  replacement.  Same with the front
grill. That piece being plastic is not cool. Takes a lot of abuse up there,
it’s no wonder they break all the time.

I guess
I will have to find a sheet metal show who can do that for me.  I guess I will look into
them making the custom aluminum dash I want also.  No repros
for the plastic dash bexel either.  Whoever comes out with that
one first is going to make a killing.

  My 69 has the
exact same problem.  There are no repro deck panels for it
unfortunately, so I had to fabricated some pieces from sheetmetal and weld
them in place of the old ones.  Those vinyl tops get ya everytime!!
THe lower corners were totally rotted away, along with a good
portion of the deck surface.  Alot of times the part of the 1/4 panel
in that area is rotted out as well.   Tom

Enlarging the holes on the brackets would be a better idea because once you
break through the chrome plating on a bumper the rust demons get a toehold on
the bare metal you exposed.
