 Hello

My first car was a Chevy, 1964 Malibu SS, Hardtop,
 Midnight Blue, with
the Light Blue Interior, 283 Engine, Auto on the floor,
 with bucket seats.
Wow... what a car and a lot of great memories.
I kept the car in fantastic shape, and spotless,
 right up until July
 6th,
1972 when a gal in a brand new MG Convertible pulled out
 in front of me,
making a left hand turn. She had just picked up her shoes
 for the prom, in
her new MG, her graduation present. Must have been nice,
 but for me, I
 worked
for every penny I had in my car.
Well, that Chevy just outright totalled that MG, even
 at 40 miles per
hour. The Malibu got hurt bad too, but just the fender,
 grill, bumper, hood
and windshield. It was enough to have the insurance
 company total it. I
collected the insurance, and went back to the scrap yard
 to buy the car
 back,
only to find it gone...never to been seen from again.
Now, I'm 48 years old, and you know what, I'm still
 looking for a 1964
Malibu SS, Hardtop, Midnight Blue, with the Light Blue
 Interior, 283 Engine,
Auto on the floor, with bucket seats. From 1972 til now,
 I've never seen one
like it, even though I keep looking. Oh, I have had the
 opportunity to buy a
beautiful convertible, but never one like I had.
So now, today, I've joined this list, hoping maybe I
 can find one in
 poor
condition to restore, or, well, I can still dream...

I am sure if you look long and hard enouigh you'll find exactly what you

depend on you.
I like to build and work on cars. so a builder fit's me.
but if your not having FUN, a long frame off project get sidetracted

 Thanks for the wondeful and warm welcome to the list;

Geez, it will be 30 years this July 6th, that I last saw my 64 Malibu
SS
intact, and had only saw one photo of one since. By the time I found that
one, it had already been sold. Now, after one day on the list, I have seen
a
second photo of one like I had, and it is still for sale, but it's a 4
speed
instead of a automatic on the floor. Don't know yet if this one is on
column
or on the floor. Owner will call me back today, he wasn't home last night.

Question. If I want a cheap rustoration case, 1964 Malibu SS
hardtop,
283, automatic on the floor with the light blue interior, how easy a find
is
that? And I guess, as a first timer for a total restoration (Have done
drive
train overhaul, complete repaints and interior work, but never from frame
up), should I try to find one that already had auto on the floor, or is
that
an easy change over in the 64?

Question. Is there somebody around, a company, that might just have
one
that needs somebody like me to bring it back to life? Somebody to start
with
 a title, LOL,
that reads 1964 Malibu SS Blue, Hardtop, Auto, 283 and build it from
there.

Or should I spend a chunk up front and mis out on all the joy of
 rebuilding one?

4 Speed will be on the floor. If the only difference is the tranny, and
the price is reasonable I'd grab it. When you start looking for a
specific 35 year old car, produced in limited numbers, you make your
search much more difficult.A tranny conversion is not too difficult
and much easier than significant body work.

Don't know if its been mentioned, but the first thing to look for in a
project is a solid body (or as solid as you can find/afford). Body work
is much more expensive, time consuming,, and frustrating than the
mechanical stuff. Chevy motors/trannys are cheap in the grand scheme
of things. Also parts peculiar to the 64 will be difficult to find.
A guy here in town, has been looking for the chrome piece that goes
around the top well of his 64 convert. Last I heard he hasn't had any
success in over a year of looking. If you get a project, you want as
many original pieces as you can find.

Last thing this AM. I assume, but don't know that you found this list
thru Team Chevelle www.chevelles.com . Checkout EVERY page linked off
that front page. There are so many resources available on line.Get
smart on the 64 so you end up with the car that you want. Again good
 luck.

[Chevelle-List] Starting Problems

2002-03-18 Thread Michael Ishee

I need help. I went to crank my car for the first time in
about a month last weekend and had some problems. It took a little longer to start up than
it usually does but it did start and I let it warm up for about a minute and a
half and was trying to let to rpms come down to idle, but the engine shut off
and would never start back up after trying different things for quite a
while. So I replaced the battery
because I got tired of jumping the car off every time I wanted to crank it and
put new spark plugs in it. I check to
see if the plugs were giving out a spark after I installed all of them and sure
enough they werent soI have an Accel ignition
system. I do not know if I need
to replace the distributor or the super coil or how to tell which to replace. Do you think the battery going out had
anything to do with the ignition system or jumping it off several times. Thanks for the help. If it matters this is on a 90 454.

Did you verify that the timing mark on the damper is
accurate? It's not unheard of for the rubber to weaken

Check for vacuum leaks. I've had more than one motor that I was sure I
assembled right suck air from somewhere.

First I check vacuum lines, then I listen for telltale whistles while
the engine is running. If I can't locate something that way I'll use a
propane torch. I open the valve slightly and pass the nozzle around the
base of the carburetor or around the edges of the intake manifold where
it meets the heads. If you get the nozzle close to where a vacuum leak
is it sucks in the propane and the engine smooths out. Just remember,
you are using a flammable gas. Make sure you don't have a spark plug
wire arcing somewhere first and do it in a very well ventilated
area..like outside. There's no need to get too close to the
distributor. There's nothing there that would be a vacuum leak anyway

Spraying carburetor cleaner around the base of the carb and around the
intake manifold will achieve the same results but carb cleaner is one of
the best paint removers I've ever seen.

It's up ta us "faith-fulls"

[Chevelle-List] Need Help identifiying this posi unit........

2002-03-18 Thread DonnieG67
There is a posi unit that is currently in a '67 chevelle 12 bolt rear that I have purchased.  Can anyone identify what the unit is called or what it might have come from???  We counted the teeth and did the math its a GM 4:33 posi, but thats about all we know. I did find out also that the numbers 9 39 on the ring gear verify it's a 4:33.

I have two pictures on my website at:

I just checked my stats, the Elky has 13 1's and 33 10's with a 8.3 avg,
the Vette has 10 1's and 17 10's with a 7.7 avg, and the Mille has 10 1's and 16
10's with a 7.9 avg.

I have to agree, there must be some Ford, Dodge, and Riceboy nuckleheads
out there voting the Chevy's down. Personally, I think anything with smoke
pouring off the back tire(s) deserves a 10 no matter what brand it is.

Keith and everyone else on the list that posted pics, be proud of your ride

The 67 Chevelle (or any Chevelle 64-71 for that matter) wasn't offered
with 4.33 gears - however, the GTO was (http://fteufert1.home.att.net/pontiac/rears.htm).
I'd venture to say you have a GTO rear end and not a
Chevelle.
